PROCRAFT
WEB SLINGS
INTRODUCTION
Procraft synthetic webbing slings are generally manufactured from
Nylon, but can also be manufactured from Polyester. The light weight
of the material, combined with superior flexibility have made these
slings popular with riggers over the years. Webbing slings will not
scratch or deface loads and the webbing’s flexibility will form a secure
grip around the load to be lifted.
Slings manufactured from Nylon will stretch between 6% to 8% and
should be used if alkalis are present, while Polyester slings will stretch
approxiametly 3% and should be used where acids exist.
Synthetic webbing used to manufacture slings have a chemically
treated surface to increase abrasion resistance, seal out moisture, and
prevent grit from attacking the webbing internally. The webbing is
unaffected by moisture, mildew, rot and certain chemicals.
SLING MANUFACTURE
Procraft web slings are manufactured to strict quality standards, and
our constant in house testing and quality analysis of all materials and
fabrication procedures ensure users a superior product. Slings can be
manufactured in either single or multiple plies, and may include
accessories such as wear pads, sleeves and end fittings. Several
types and configurations are available. The following system is used
to identify different types at time of order:
Sling Type (2 letters)
EE - Eye each end
EN - Endless
TC - Triangle & Choker
TT - Triangle each end
ER - Reverse eye each
end
Indicates the
number of plies in
sling. (1,2,3 or 4)
TYPE 1: Triangle & Choker (TC) hardware on each end manufactured
from either steel or lightweight aluminum. Most effective for choker
hitch, can also be used in vertical or basket hitches.
TYPE 2: Triangle & Triangle (TT) hardware on each end manufactured
from either steel or lightweight aluminum. For use in either basket or
vertical hitches only.
TYPE 3: Flat Eye & Eye (EE) sewn on each end. Choice of either
straight (easy to remove from underneath loads) or tapered eyes. For
use in vertical, choker or basket hitches.
TYPE 4: Twisted Eye & Eye (EE) sewn on each end. Eyes are turned at
a right angle to sling body and choice of either straight or tapered
eyes. Forms effective choker hitches, also used in vertical or basket
hitches.
TYPE 5: Endless Grommet slings (EN) sewn together to form an
endless loop. Versatile sling for all hitches.
Other Fittings: Slings can be manufactured with other steel fittings including Connectors,
Shackles, Hooks and Couplers. Also available wear pads and protection sliding sleeves.
ENVIRONMENTAL
CONSIDERATIONS
All slings should be stored in a cool, dry, and dark place away from
harmful ultra-violet rays (sunlight) and Arc Welders in operation.
Continuous exposure to sunlight can affect the strength of synthetic
webbing in varying degrees, ranging from total degradation to slight
degradation. Nylon and Polyester slings shall not be used with
temperatures in excess of 194 degree F (90 degrees C).
Chemical active environments can be hazardous to the sling strength,
Wesco Industries should be consulted before using slings in such
environments. See chart below for a guide on chemical resistance of
webbing:
NYLON NO YES YES YES NO YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES
POLYESTER # YES NO ## YES YES NO YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES
## Degraded by strong alkalis at elevated temperatures.
CARE, USE & INSPECTION
Webbing slings should be inspected by the person(s) prior to any
lifting operations. The inspector should seek to detect any surface
damage to the sling and its components. Excessive surface chafe
(wear), cross or longitudinal cuts in the webbing, cuts or chafe damage
to the edges (caused by overloading), crystaliztion of the webbing
(caused by exposure to excessive heat), local weakening or softening
of the webbing material so that surface fibres can be plucked or rubbed
off, corrosion and/or distortion of hardware - caused by acids or
overload; will result in a serious loss of strength to the sling. A sling so
affected should be taken out of service immediately.
Never try to repair a damaged webbing sling. Wesco Industries can
inspect and reuse your old webbing sling hardware safely and provide
proof load certification if required.
WARNING: NEVER EXCEED WORKING LOAD LIMITS PAGE 4
Once sling has been inspected, determine the weight of the load, type
of load to be lifted and the sling angle that is to be used. Make sure that
the sling will be protected from cuts by sharp edges, sharp corners and
abrasive surfaces.
NEVER EXCEED THE WORKING LOAD LIMIT OF THE SLING!
SLING ANGLES
When slings are used in a basket hitch and suspended from one hook
sling angles will directly affect the rated capacity of any slings. The
“sling to load angle” is the angle between the horizontal top of the load
and the leg of the sling. As the “sling to load angle”decrease, so does
the safe capacity of the sling. Refer to the charts below:
Sling Angles
in Degrees
Factor
Angles less than 45 degrees are not reccomended and those below
30 degrees should be avoided whenever possible.
POLYESTER
ENDLESS SLINGS
INTRODUCTION
Wesco Industries endless synthetic slings are manufactured from a
continuous loop of polyester yarn covered by a single herringbone
weave jacket. The jacket is colour coded and protects the inner core of
load bearing polyester yarns from damage and UV rays.
Endless slings have many advantages including:
• Low stretch (about 3% at rated capacity).
• Excellent contact and conforms to shape of your load to grip
securely.
• Cover will not scratch or damage your load surface.
• Light weight.
• Excellent for use in choke hitch applications as sling releases
easily after use.
