Courage To Be Safe (Part 1 of 2) - Waterway 1
Dennis Gifford - Lumberton Fire & EMS
The “Courage To Be Safe” course is a provocative and moving
presentation that is designed to change the fire service culture
of accepting the loss of firefighters as a “normal occurrence”.
Building on the untold story of LODD survivors, it reveals how family
members must live with the consequences of a firefighter death
and provides a focus on the need for firefighters and officers
alike to change our basic fundamental safety attitudes and
behaviors in order to prevent line of duty injuries and deaths. The
central theme promotes the “courage to do the right thing” and
promoting a new culture that allows and encourages everyone to
be more observant and willing to share everyday safety concerns
in order to protect themselves and other firefighters to ensure that
“Everyone Goes Home” at the end of the day.
Updating Tactics for the New Reality of Modern Fire Behavior - Montgomery C
Lieutenant Jason Hearnsberger - The Woodlands Fire Department
Higher fuel loads, Better Insulations, Lightweight construction,
Open Layouts, Hotter Fires, Faster flashovers. These are just a few
of the realities facing firefighters in the modern world. This class
examines the science behind modern fire behavior and how it
differs from past generations. Recent research into ventilationlimited
compartment fire development is showing us that our
tactics need updating. New tactics based on flexible evaluation
of key factors will improve firefighters’ ability to save lives and
property while increasing fire ground safety.
Justice Jones and Jared Karns - Texas A&M Forest Service
The Firefighter Safety Series is a multipart information package
from the National Wildland/ Urban Interface Fire Program. It
addresses problems faced by structural and wildland firefighters
when fighting fires, especially those threatening structures in
the wildland/ urban interface. An important goal is to improve
