UNITED WAY COMMUNITY REPORT 2010
Message from the Campaign Chair
Paul Racine,
Campaign Chair
How it happened, where and when it all began…
it was a sunny day. Northumberland United Way
President, Tom Behan, came to my house, actually
our front yard; we have a property hidden away in
Port Hope. Last spring, he approached me on behalf
of the Board. Tom said, ”We think you can do a great
job. There is a great team in place and you will have
their total support. It will be a blast.” He then gave
me a schedule of the key dates and asked if I could
let him know.
I said to myself, “We have a wedding this year, travel plans and we are expanding
our business.” Bill Patchett had just finished a great year as Chair; the economy
was still in the dumpster. “How is anyone going to follow that act?” I
wondered. With that, I turned around and went into the house and approached
my wife Debby. She asked, “Who was that?” I said, “Tom Behan, President of
Northumberland United Way. He asked me to chair this year’s United Way
campaign.” We looked at each other. Ten seconds of silence followed; it felt
like 10 hours. It’s such an honour to be asked; we should see if we can make
this happen. We took the schedule and found that there were few conflicts, so I
called him that afternoon and accepted. I love to learn about our community.
As I reflect on our journey this year, we learned more than we thought we
would. We had fun doing it. We were humbled by the efforts of our volunteers
and donors throughout the entire county.
Donors give when they understand need and see the results being achieved. For
over 40 years, the United Way has built on that mantra. I was taken aback by
the number of people throughout the community who thanked me for stepping
up to help out. It has been an honour. To the staff and the Board, thank you for
placing your trust in me and allowing me to be your voice. As my year comes
to a close, on behalf of Debby & myself, I’d like to thank everyone who stepped
up to the plate. For the next Chair, when you are asked jump at the chance!
Looking back today, this was one of the best decisions we’ve ever made. Tom
was right; there was a great team, great agencies, great partners, and new
friends. We love Northumberland with its best chili, best stews, best soups, best
lunches, best dinners, best desserts and really great people.
To all our media partners who helped us to get our message out, I can’t thank
you enough. Communication is the key. I know it had to help our fundraising
partners. We introduced some new campaigns this year and they did well.
Leading the Way Circle, chaired by Beth Brook, gained great traction.
