UNITED WAY COMMUNITY REPORT 2010
®
Message from the President & CEO
Tom Behan,
President
Lynda Kay,
CEO
I have had the honour for the past five years to be
involved with United Way in many capacities, as
a Director, Campaign Chair and Board President.
When I first became involved, I knew about the
United Way, but I wasn’t aware of the widespread
support the organization provided to our community.
I have had my eyes opened over the years as I
have seen firsthand the dedication and support the
volunteers, member agencies, and staff provide to
ensure important programs and services are available
throughout the county.
Lynda and I ask you to read through this year’s
Annual Report. There are testimonials from our
member agencies and their clients, and United Way
grant recipients. As an organization that is funded
through the generosity of the community, we believe
it is important to be both transparent and accountable.
Our Campaign target in 2010 was to raise $900,000+.
Under the leadership of Paul Racine, Campaign
Chair, this goal was met and exceeded. This is an
amazing accomplishment and we thank Paul and
the community for their generosity. Our “plus” was
a bequest of $123,000 from Mr. Edwin Harper. This
bequest was the largest gift that the United Way has
ever received. We are honoured to be a recipient of
Mr. Harper’s Estate, and the Board will ensure the
funds are invested and utilized to support initiatives
in the community.
This past year, we moved our offices and the Food 4
All Warehouse to 600 William Street. We are thankful
to Northumberland County for their support in
our move and for the ongoing funding of the Food
4 All Warehouse. Their support is crucial to its sustainability.
Our funding partners also include the
Ontario Trillium Foundation, who funded a new lift
truck for the warehouse, and continued to support
a Volunteer Coordinator for county wide breakfast
programs through a grant to the Food for Thought
committee; the Province of Ontario for their support
of 211; and the Government of Canada for the
Homelessness Partnership Initiative grant
that brought together a new partnership between
the Greenwood Coalition and United Way.
There are many other initiatives in which United
Way takes part, including the Northumberland
Youth Advisory Council, Northumberland Poverty
Reduction, and Northumberland Children’s Services
Committee to name a few. The dedication
and collaboration that is happening throughout the
County is amazing.
This coming year, the Board of the United Way will
undertake a Strategic Plan to aid in setting our direction
for the next three years. The sharing of resources
and increased collaboration are all areas that will
be investigated in order to ensure our viability and
sustainability for the future.
As we close, Lynda and I would like to thank our
volunteers: the Board of Directors, our Campaign
team, the many community members on our committees,
and the hundreds of volunteers who give
their time to support initiatives that we fund in the
community.
Our campaign slogan says it all:
“United we can.” In 2010…United we did!
Our Mission
To improve lives and build community by engaging individuals and mobilizing collective action.
A Generous Gift, With Huge Impact
In 2010 the United Way was a recipient of a very generous
bequest from the estate of Mr. Edwin Harper. Mr. Harper was
born on the family farm located in Camborne. He grew up working
and loving the land and the community that surrounded it.
He worked the land until his early fifties when he retired from
farming and began spending his winters in Florida. Mr. Harper,
although enjoying his winter vacations, always looked forward
to returning back to Canada and the community in which he was born.
He passed away in 2007. In his Will he left a legacy to the community by generously
donating over $123,000 to the United Way. These funds will be utilized
to support health and social services in Northumberland County. Have
you ever thought about taking action today to ensure the well being of others
tomorrow? Making a gift to Northumberland United Way in your Will allows
you to make a lasting commitment to your community and has the potential to
impact others for years to come.
Over 1,500 back packs were purchased and stuffed with pens, pencils, paper,
throughout the County to students in need. The provision of these school
essentials is supported by a consortium of Community Partners including
Dial 211 … Help Starts Here!
Finding information is now a little easier since the launch in
Northumberland of 211 in May 2009.
211 is a free 3 digit number that links callers to access information
on government programs, social and health services, legal and
financial assistance, food and shelter, transportation services,
counseling, child and youth services, seniors’ programs, community
clubs and many other services. Each call is answered live by a trained
information specialist. The referral of calls saves time and money that
local agencies might expend redirecting people to other services.
With the 211 telephone number, over 3200 calls have been made by
residents of Northumberland to find information such as the location
of food banks, how to complete government forms, or where to find
help for elderly parents. With 211, residents can access where to find
help twenty four hours a day, seven days a week, in more than 150
languages. In Northumberland County, 211 calls were tracked: the
top issues were Government, housing, financial and food security.
Student Nutrition Programs
The Northumberland Food For Thought (NFFT) is a community partnership that
brings resources together with the purpose of ensuring that students have access to
nutritious, safe, and personally acceptable food to optimize their learning at school.
Students who are well nourished perform better in school. Their ability to concentrate
improves, as does their overall ability to learn.
The NFFT oversees the supports for the 38 local school breakfast programs which in
2010 served over 367,100 breakfasts to more than 3,000 students. During the course
of a school year, the more than 180 people who help out with student nutrition programs
in Northumberland County donated a total of 27,540 hours. That adds up to
approximately 1,147 days – or more than three years – of volunteer time.
In 2009, United Way partnered with Northumberland Food for Thought to obtain
a two year Ontario Trillium Foundation grant. This grant has enabled the Food for
Thought to hire a Volunteer Coordinator, Darlene Theriault, to assist the schools
with volunteer recruitment and retention. Our thanks go to the Ontario Trillium
Foundation for their support.
UNITED WAY COMMUNITY REPORT 2010
Message from the Campaign Chair
Paul Racine,
Campaign Chair
How it happened, where and when it all began…
it was a sunny day. Northumberland United Way
President, Tom Behan, came to my house, actually
our front yard; we have a property hidden away in
Port Hope. Last spring, he approached me on behalf
of the Board. Tom said, ”We think you can do a great
job. There is a great team in place and you will have
their total support. It will be a blast.” He then gave
me a schedule of the key dates and asked if I could
let him know.
I said to myself, “We have a wedding this year, travel plans and we are expanding
our business.” Bill Patchett had just finished a great year as Chair; the economy
was still in the dumpster. “How is anyone going to follow that act?” I
wondered. With that, I turned around and went into the house and approached
my wife Debby. She asked, “Who was that?” I said, “Tom Behan, President of
Northumberland United Way. He asked me to chair this year’s United Way
campaign.” We looked at each other. Ten seconds of silence followed; it felt
like 10 hours. It’s such an honour to be asked; we should see if we can make
this happen. We took the schedule and found that there were few conflicts, so I
called him that afternoon and accepted. I love to learn about our community.
As I reflect on our journey this year, we learned more than we thought we
would. We had fun doing it. We were humbled by the efforts of our volunteers
and donors throughout the entire county.
Donors give when they understand need and see the results being achieved. For
over 40 years, the United Way has built on that mantra. I was taken aback by
the number of people throughout the community who thanked me for stepping
up to help out. It has been an honour. To the staff and the Board, thank you for
placing your trust in me and allowing me to be your voice. As my year comes
to a close, on behalf of Debby & myself, I’d like to thank everyone who stepped
up to the plate. For the next Chair, when you are asked jump at the chance!
Looking back today, this was one of the best decisions we’ve ever made. Tom
was right; there was a great team, great agencies, great partners, and new
friends. We love Northumberland with its best chili, best stews, best soups, best
lunches, best dinners, best desserts and really great people.
To all our media partners who helped us to get our message out, I can’t thank
you enough. Communication is the key. I know it had to help our fundraising
partners. We introduced some new campaigns this year and they did well.
Leading the Way Circle, chaired by Beth Brook, gained great traction.
UNITED WAY COMMUNITY REPORT 2010
®
Leading the Way Circle
The newly launched Leading the Way Circle recognizes leaders in our community who make very generous contributions to Northumberland United Way. Leading the Way Circle
Members have given $1,000 or more, which equates to a gift of $83.33 per month to this year’s campaign and have made a significant impact in our community. THANK YOU!
Some examples of why a member of the Leading the Way Circle should feel good knowing that their donation of $1,000 or more will help provide the following in our community
• Practical help with tax returns completed, heating bills paid and legal assistance for those in need
• Support and mentoring for children and youth in need of role models and friendship programs
• Help for adults to improve reading, writing, math and basic computer skills
• Assistance and support of individuals of all ages, couples, families, workplaces and communities to increase their coping capacity and wellbeing when
dealing with life issues through counselling, information/education, support and/or advocacy programs and services
• Support for seniors through food security, foot care, counselling and therapy programs
Industry Leaders in Giving
Corporate Leaders in Giving
United Way counts on the local industries, their employees and unions each year
as they contribute a substantial amount of money for the community. In 2010, local
industries raised 44% of the campaign total, which represents over $400,000. This
money was raised through payroll deduction, corporate gifts and matches and
employee events at their workplaces. The United Way thanks all those employees
and industries who support the Campaign each year. THANK YOU!
United We Did!
Campaign 2010 Raised $904,564+ !
All kinds of different events, big and small, were held by a wide variety of different businesses and groups this past year. Many volunteers spent countless hours
into organizing and running third party events to benefit our communities. Despite all the hard work, a lot of good fun was had and each event helped raise not only
funds but awareness of needs within the County. We want to thank all of those who worked so hard to raise money for United Way.
