Burial Expenses • 5 U.S.C. § 8134 provides “up to” $800 for burial expenses. • 5 U.S.C. § 8133 gives an additional $200 to reimburse “the costs of termination i of the decedent’s status as an employee of the United States.” • (These payments are deducted from the $10,000 general gratuity payable at the discretion of the agency to federal employees who die in the performance of duty.) 14
How are these benefits claimed? • Individuals claiming these amounts must demonstrate that the death resulted from an injury sustained in the performance of duty. • Claimants may also seek transportation expenses when the employee dies from the injury “while away from his home or official i station or outside the United States” under 5 U.S.C. § 8134(b). 15
