Ride Reports
Big Jims Ride - Sunday 18th May 2008
Sunday the 18th of May Big Jim Thomson with his trusty
sweeper Royce led a ride out to Ilam Country House in
Derbyshire, 12 bikes with 20 members left Harley World on
time after a first class briefing from Big Jim. The route meandered
through Barlow towards Owler-bar and into Baslow;
the traffic was now building up as it does on any
summer Sunday. Overtaking the flat cap and glove brigade
we rode on towards the main A6 to Buxton before
turning off to one of Jims surprise back roads, with twists,
bends, cow-pats, gravel, Cath, all kinds of other obstacles
but we all made it ok.
The piece-de- resistance was “The Tunnel” I have lived in
Derbyshire all of my 40ish years!! and had no idea that this
was here. The sound and roar of big pipes reverberating
off the tunnel walls certainly made the twisting roads
worthwhile, but unbeknown to the sweeper and after getting
my recently cleaned & polished wheels wet, we did an
about turn over a field, through a ford and had another
blast back through the tunnel and onto some better and
wider roads.
prefer, but Doreen & Lyn being well versed in the art of
seeing a tea room and getting to front of the queue first,
without thinking made a bee line for the door, so in true
fashion the teapot won again.
Tea and cakes over we had the obligatory group photo
then made our way back to the dealership for a final
cuppa. I would have liked shares in that new vending machine,
I understand that it almost makes as much profit as
Dave England’s EVO corner.
A good day out, well led, well done, and without the aid of
a G.P.S.
Royce
Dave England’s Ride - Sunday 1st June 2008
The ride out was lead by Dave England our Chapter Director
and the sweeper was Sharon Hardwick.
Six bikes and Nine people left Harley world at 10.00am,
where the ride headed off through Baslow and Youlgreave
towards Hartington and up through Harper Hill.
We reached our destination where Jim had arranged for
the bikes to be parked on a hard standing area rather than
on the grass, which also meant that we didn’t have far to
walk to the tea room, which were quite busy, but as usual
we commandeered a few tables and had quite a pleasant
break with plenty of time to eat and explore the grounds.
It was raining as
the group of all
weather riders
set off where
they encountered
lots of mist
as the ride got
higher into the
peaks, the
group rode
down part of the
A53 and it was a welcome break when we got to the
Peveril of the Peak hotel for refreshments of hot soup,
sandwiches and a pot of tea.
Leaving Ilam we rode passed our rally venue, The Peveril
of the Peak Hotel and followed much of last year’s ride-out
route. From here we diverted towards Monsel Head, Jim &
Pandy’s favourite tea stop. I was led to believe that we
were to enjoy an ice cream a 99 or what ever position you
As the ride set off back to Chesterfield it stopped raining
and brightened up the ride was steady as road conditions
on B roads were not fantastic.
In the middle of the afternoon we arrived back at Harley-
World after a round trip of 102 miles, Overall a good ride
and everyone enjoyed it.
Ride Reports
Ghent 30th ~ 2nd June 2008
On Friday 30th May the intrepid duo of Steve Thomas
& Dennis Dobson set off from HarleyWorld at
9am in two groups of 6 and 7 bikes with 22 people
for the ride to the Channel Tunnel. After a quick
blast down the M1 all 13 bikes arrived at Toddington
Services in good time for a t&p stop, fill with petrol
and then off to the Ace Café for our lunch. We went
via the North Circular Rd with no problems.
We arrived in great time for the Chunnel and Chris
checked everyone in with efficiency and a happy
smile for everyone. As usual the 35 min trip passed
very quickly and we were off the train and into the
service area where we were met by our Belgian
Friends, Bernie, Sven and Luc. They escorted us on
the 2 hr trip to our hotel where we were settled in.
Our hosts even waited for us to get ready before escorting
us to the local Chinese restaurant where we
had a great meal and a much needed relax.
Chris, Dennis & Steve
Thomson, were asked to
present a bouquet during the
ceremony in honor of the
fallen soldiers. This was a
very special, Moving and
sad occasion and many a
tear was shed by us during
this ceremony. Something we will never forget.
Sunday morning we were
again picked up at 9am
for a ride to the coastal
town of Knock, but first
we rode to visit Lisa,
Geraldine’s daughter and
Bernie’s Niece. Lisa suffers
from MS and now
lives in a nursing home
with other people in a
similar situation. We presented
Lisa with a Certificate
and membership card, making her a life members
of Peak Riders as well as T shirts, mugs and a
key ring donated by Patrick at HarleyWorld, also in
the pack was a 2 DVD set of our Rally and Birthday
bash.
This was also a very moving but uplifting morning
and one that we would not have missed. We will be
seeing Lisa again when we are in Belgium and we
thank her for her friendship, as well as all of our
friends from Ghent.
Monday Morning, with heavy hearts we left Ghent for
the journey to England, everyone who came to Belgium
with us said it was the best weekend they had
spent as well as the most worthwhile.
Saturday morning our Hosts from the Ghent Chapter
picked us up at 9am for the Flanders Field ride organised
by Chiefke, we had a great day visiting war
graves and memorials of young men killed in the
war, a very moving and interesting day.
Come 4.30 we arrived at a nice restaurant, arranged
by Bernie and had a great meal where we met
Geraldine, Bernie’s Sister. This led us on to a great
part of the day when we were escorted to the Meningate
to see the salute that takes place there every
day a 8pm.
Ride Reports
Hog on the Humber 7th June 2008
On Saturday the 7th of June we woke to a rather overcast
day and on reaching HarleyWorld the rain came, but
wet’s on and after an attentive briefing, “except for
Sharon”, 22 bikes left the shop travelling at a nice easy
pace towards Worksop, through Blyth and other villages
to bypass the busy roundabout at Bawtry.
Big Tone bought some for Janet, (out of her housekeeping
of course), then set about sampling almost everyone else’s
chips.
Taking the scenic route as opposed to the busy roads
which made it a pleasurable ride out. Riding through the
village of Thorn Sharon was getting rather desperate and
finding all of the facilities closed took advantage of the
“behind the bush amenities”, forgetting that the Yorkshire
Television’s Helicopter was above filming the bikes.
As we entered the Little Chef car park at South Cave
more bikes and chapters were there with the same intention,
a bite to eat and a “t” stop. After being fed and watered
and making sure that Sharon had squeezed the last
drop we left for the bridge.
On our arrival we suddenly met up with loads of other
bikes, (439 at the official count) what a sight; it was a
good time to meet up with other chapter members who
we had not seen for a while. Once registered and after
waiting in line for a short time, the whistle blew and as
the bikes started, the noise had to be heard to be believed.
The weather by now was perfect and the atmosphere
unbelievable. The ride over the bridge was awesome
with people clapping, waving off the bridges and
from the roadside I felt proud to be there.
A couple of bikes left us at this point, having prior arrangements,
but as the weather had now changed and was
quite warm the rest of us moved on and rode round to
Hornsey Mere where we had a cuppa and made sure that
Sharon was ready for the journey homeward.
We headed back, again through Beverley, through a golf
course and onto a picturesque village called Walkington,
which has it’s own duck pond right in the middle, thinking
that it would be nice to stop and explore we then we realised
that “water” “Sharon” maybe not, so we carried on
and made our way onto the Little Chef on the other side of
the M62 where everyone would make his or her own way
home
The day had been enjoyable from start to finish with many
a good laugh having been had and hopefully next year we
can take more members and give support to the relevant
charity.
After the bridge we mustered back in the car park for a
ride onto the coast, passing through Beverley, past the
Minster and onto Hornsey where we found enough room
for us all to park and to enjoy the best fish & chips that I
have had for a long time, they were that tasty that even
The Bike Bath
If you don't want the finish of your
Harley-Davidson to lose its shine, here's
our guide to keeping that cosmetic appeal
The sheer beauty of any Harley-
Davidson motorcycle is its sheen and
shine, but it's easy to get complacent
and not clean and protect it regularly.
Environmental influences such as geographical characteristics,
nicks from road debris and atmospheric conditions -
rain, UV rays, heat, cold, pollution, salt -- can cause vehicle
surfaces to rust over time if neglected.
Any vehicle surface that is neglected (or treated with the
incorrect product) can lead to corrosion/rust and oxidation.
Corrosion refers to the deterioration of a material due to
reactions with its environment, and rust is a common term
for corrosion, formed by iron in the presence of water and
oxygen. Exposure to moisture in the air as well as acids,
bases, salts, oxygen, and organic chemicals can affect the
surfaces of your bike, and not thought of but commonly
found in any garage include chlorine, paint, thinner and
fertilizer.
So, how can we make sure our bikes avoid deterioration?
Despite good intentions, you can actually damage your
motorcycle if you don't clean it in the proper way. Dirty
rags, harsh detergents and neglected areas can cause
scratching, dulling and, yes, galvanic corrosion. Keeping
your Harley clean is crucial to its long-term well-being and
value. A clean bike is also easier to maintain and more
likely to maintain its value.
PRE-WASH
Before you turn on the hose and crack open the Harley
Sunwash, remember to do some simple things that can
make a huge difference and help you avoid dreaded
scratching. Remove rings, jewellery, watches and anything
else that might scratch your bike as you clean. Motorcycle
jackets with metal buckles, zippers and studs can be especially
hazardous to paint.
Don't try to wash your bike right after a long ride. Make
sure your bike is cool to the touch. Not only can a hot engine
and pipes burn you, but they can scar your motorcycle
by making waxes and cleaners act differently.
If your bike is caked with mud or heavy soil, rinse it off first.
Sponging over crusted dirt can scratch your paint.
Beware the old sponge -- it may have dirt trapped inside
that will scratch your finish. We recommend using the
wash mitt available from Harley-Davidson. Buy cleaning
products made for cleaning motorcycles. Just because
something makes your bathtub or toaster shine, doesn't
mean it will do the same for your Harley.
THEWASH
Now that you're ready, it's time to roll up your sleeves and
get to work. Dilute Sunwash according to instructions on
bottle and wash bike. Sunwash contains special water softeners
that allow it to be used in direct sunlight.
Rinse thoroughly from the top down, paying careful attention
to complete removal of cleaner, especially from nooks
and crannies. During rinsing, you may splatter cleaner from
one part of the bike to another, so go back and give the
bike a light misting. In drying your bike, pay close attention
to areas where water tends to puddle. Leaf blowers make
excellent bike dryers. Again, make certain the blower is
clean. Compressed air is not good for drying, because oil
and rust particles are often inside the tank.
Clean your wheels, and pay special attention to the
dreaded galvanic corrosion. In the course of normal use,
particles from brake dust get on your wheels. If neglected,
these non-compatible metals can react to one another, creating
galvanic corrosion, and produce pitting on your
wheels. The result is costly refinishing of the wheel. In
other words, wheel dirt is a whole new kind of dirt, so it
needs a whole new kind of cleaner. Look for a cleaner
made specifically for wheels, preferably Harley-Davidson
Wheel and Tire Cleaner.
THE ONCE OVER
As you clean and rinse your bike, be very aware of how
water reacts. This will give you an indication of what to do
next. If the water beads into small round droplets, you
probably don't need to polish your bike. If the water sheets
or forms oblong droplets, it may be time for a polish job.
If your bike is older than six months, professional detailers
recommend a pre-cleaning or cleansing. Use Harley Glaze
Polish and Sealant to deal with imperfections, slight
scratches, dulling and stains.
THE POLISH AND SEAL
Polishing and sealing isn't just about good looks. A well
cared-for bike repels dust, dirt, bugs and dirty water. Use
Harley Glaze Polish and Sealant and follow the instructions
on bottle. Don't use in bright sunlight or if the air is especially
humid. Use a soft cloth for application. A soft cloth is
an absolute must for buffing.
If streaking occurs, try a dampened softcloth or a couple of
drops of distilled water in a gentle circular motion. If streaking
is severe, reapply a small amount of the polish and remove
quickly. After polishing, let the bike remain in the
shade for several hours if possible.
NOTE: Harley-Davidson finish products have been tested and
certified by Harley-Davidson engineers and all adhere to strict
guidelines for testing. Added ingredients are designed specifically
for Harley-Davidson motorcycle finishes and H-D Surface
Care Products are formulated to be compatible with each
other.
