Hi Hogsters!! 

Apparently, June 

has been a tad 

wet here in dear 

old ‘Blighty’. I 

kept checking the 

UK weather 

reports via Sky in the Beach Bar in 

Burgau, Portugal whilst sipping ice 

cold beer ….. (on the occasions I 

could be bothered to get up from my 

sun lounger from the red hot beach). 

“You poor things” I chuckled to 

myself …… “Another cold beer over 

here waiter!!” 

But seriously, I have missed my 

biker chums and of course riding the 

bike. Somehow driving about in an 

air-conditioned hire car isn’t the 

same as being on the bike with the 

wind blow through your tresselled 

locks. However, I was envying Big 

Tone, John B & the girls who were 

200 miles further up the road at 

Cascais—the 2012 European HD 

Rally. A bit too far for us, otherwise 

we would have driven up to join them 

for a beer. 

So, back to the wet UK. I’m 

amazed that some of you actually 

made it to the various ride outs and 

rallies. Some brave souls actually 

spent a night or two under canvas …. 

madness. The reports are included 

within the Newsletter, alongside your 

old treasured favorite items.

This month we are featuring one of 

our Ladies Of Harley, Kathryn 

Middleton, who tells us her story 

about how she started riding Harleys. 

Good News!! I’ve saved myself the 

cost of 2 breakfasts this month, as no 

-one has given me a Pit Stop article!! 

If you remember, we started this last 

month and I’ve offered to provide a 

breakfast for two if you tell me about 

your favorite biker stop. Come on 

Peak Riders, this offer is too good to 

miss. Get those contributions flowing 

in!! 

I’ve not a lot to report on the 

Jackson Biking Chronicles front this 

month. My attention has been pulled 

towards my 4 wheeled mode of 

transport. My Alfa Romeo 156 

Veloche Twin Spark with Selespeed 

died on me at the airport hotel on the 

way home from holiday. She’s almost 

12 years old with 100,000 miles on 

the clock, I was sure it was good for 

another 5 years! It’s currently in with 

the car doctor for a diagnosis, but I’m 

expecting the worst and a trip to the 

Knackers Yard is the anticipated 

outcome. So I’ve bought a copy of 

“What Car” and am doing my 

homework ready for the dreaded car 

hunt. In the meantime, Pooh and 

Candice are getting the hammer. The 

weekly shop is proving interesting. 

Good job I’ve got a trailer for 

Candice!!!

Wet……. 

I cannot remember ever 

getting so wet on a 

regular basis as we have 

this month. Almost a 

complete wash out, but 

Peak Riders have still 

turned out to ride, not in 

our usual numbers but 

all the same the hardcore 

have made the 

effort. We really 

appreciate your effort, 

Thanks to all you hardy 

Hogsters… 

One of the weekends 

that wasn’t a wash out 

was the Harley- 

Davidson® World Ride 

formally known as Million 

Mile Monday, now 

rebranded to take in two 

days. We had a massive 

contribution from our 

Chapter and HarleyWorld 

managing to clock up a 

staggering 11,271 miles 

and, when I checked, 

that was more than 30 

actual countries. Well 

done dudes!! Any one 

involved can print off a 

certificate via the Forum 

on our website, so I’m 

told by our tecky…….. 

Wednesday night rides 

are now proving to be a 

popular event with the 

numbers attending 

starting to increase. 

They’re a bit less formal 

than the Sunday rides. 

We use the buddy system 

and tend to ride for 

around an hour, ending 

up at a country pub or a 

chippy for a chat and a 

bite to eat. Have a look 

on the events calendar 

for the venues and, if it’s 

a nice evening, why not 

join us for a change? One 

to try is the ride to the 

Waterfront Inn at West 

Stockwith where the 

Chesterfield Canal joins 

the river Trent….. 

The dyno challenge day 

was quite good fun, the 

highlight being Patricks 

lawn mower turning in a 

creditable 0.02 bhp at 

the wheel and then 

getting a squirt of NOS 

and giving up the ghost. 

Then there was our very 

own Captain Chaos on 

his glide almost pushing 

out 60bhp! I’ve seen more 

grunt in a Singer sewing 

machine, but the noise 

was immense! But the 

bragging writes go to 

Stridey with 86bhp from 

his Fat Boy Special, nice 

one dude……… 

The Flying Fat Boy has 

been off the road this 

month while the oil leak 

that had developed was 

sorted out with a pair of 

new rocker covers. And 

guess what, I’m still 

waiting for the panniers 

and top box for the 

Triumph. “May delivery 

Mr Peel!”…. Yeah, right!!!

Kaptain’s Korner

Hello Peak Riders, 

June has been and 

gone! (The month of 

June that is). 

Now........ where have 

we been? Peak District 

with Andy, Green Lane 

Riding with Russ, 

SkegVegas with John G 

and as I write this, we’re 

off to Hog the Humber 

with Big Tone and join up with the rally crew who 

are there for the weekend. The rally crew have 

also been to the Circus Maximus Rally over in 

Chester and reported a ‘good do’ had by all. 

We’ve had some great Wednesday evening rides 

and of course Million Mile Monday which now has 

a new name (Ed: Worldride!) and covers 2 days 

to enable/encourage us to do more miles on our 

beloved Harleys!

I’ve now got my bike back after Ian and his happy 

band of Techies have changed the main gearbox 

output shaft bearing which was the reason for 

excessive transmission noise. Anyway it’s riding 

beautifully now and it’s good to have my 

‘bathroom suite’ back. 

Still on the technical side of biking, I’ve replaced 

the fork seals on my Super Tenere trail bike and 

discovered it had ‘odd’ seals fitted because the 

two fork legs were also ‘odd’ and presumably one 

has been replaced at some time in it’s 20 year 

life. All back together now and not a weep of fork 

oil in sight.....result! 

Next Wednesday evening we’re off to the 

Waterfront Hotel where the Chesterfield Canal 

joins the River Trent at West Stockwith. We went 

for the first time last year and enjoyed some good 

grub and great views over the marina and the 

Trent. So if you’ve not been on a Wednesday 

rideout, come and join us, you might find you like 

it. 

Try to keep and eye on the ‘events’ section of the 

Peakrider’s website and in particular start times 

for rideouts. We try wherever possible to keep the 

10:00 for 10:30 start time, but we may have to 

vary this according to the routes and destinations. 

Sharron’s ride to Hunstanton on Sunday 8 th July 

is setting off at 9:30 am so we are meeting at 9:00 

am at HarleyWorld. Should be a great ride, last 

year we stopped at Hunstanton on the return 

journey from our Norfolk weekend and we all 

spotted a whale on the beach! 

Keep supporting the rides and the Road Captains 

will keep on planning the routes and destinations. 

Russ and I are off up to North Yorkshire for a 

recce at 8:00 am Saturday morning..............the 

weather forecast is bloody aweful!

Windy Ridge — 3rd June 2012 

One day I’ll learn to keep 

my thought’s to myself. ‘We 

will be riding what ever the 

weather’ kept ringing in my 

head as I pulled the bike out 

of the garage. It was 

throwing it down! A very 

careful ride to HarleyWorld 

to meet up with the Chapter 

stalwarts, (a.k.a. nutters). I 

was lead, Russ and Geoff 

sweep and wing, they’d got 

Max and Anne as pillions 

and there was Joth and 

Beth. 10:30 came and went 

and no one else arrived so I 

presumed we would be 

heading home. WRONG!!! 

Anne came over and said 

that seeing as we had 

made the effort to get here 

we may has well at least go 

and have brunch at Windy 

Ridge and everyone was in 

agreement. We dispensed 

with the briefing deciding 

that dropping Joth at every 

junction would get tedious 

…. although fun. So we 

mounted the bikes and with 

a jaunty wave to the 

bewildered HarleyWorld 

Sales team, set off to Windy 

Ridge. 

I thought it best to stay 

on the A roads instead of 

the planned route which 

included lots of minor roads 

and villages to beat the 

bank holiday traffic. Baslow, 

Ashford in the Water, 

Brierlow Bar and on to the 

B5053 through Longnor and 

Warslow to the A523 and 

Windy Ridge Café. No 

traffic jams, no traffic, just a solitary bus on it’s way to 

Longnor with no passengers. Just four bikes and 

seven soggy passengers turned in to an almost empty 

car park of the popular biker haunt with just two other 

bikes in the car park. We trudged in and got out of our 

wet outer gear, water, water 

everywhere, but the spirits 

hadn’t been dampened as we 

ordered the grub. Full English 

with two hash browns and a pot 

of tea for two for me …. the 

rest looking puzzled? Sandra 

was still at home in bed, and I 

was just a tad thirsty!!! We was 

tucking in when the door 

opened and in walked Gordon 

Price and Jayne Newall who 

were on route to Uttoxeter in 

his new Skoda Go Kart Thingy 

and thought they would join us 

for brunch. 

We spent an hour chewing 

the fat and then got into the 

soggy shells and onto the Bikes 

before heading for Ashbourne 

and the best bit of the ride. One 

of Peak Riders favourite roads, 

the B5056 from Bentley Brook 

to Longnor, and onto 

Grangemill. It doesn’t matter 

what's happening with the 

weather or how many times I 

ride this piece of road, it never 

fails to make me smile and 

reminds me why I ride 

Harleys— I love it. A right at 

the end down through Via 

Gelia to Cromford and through 

the deserted Matlock Bath - not 

a single bike on the whole 

length of the promenade! It 

must be bad me thinks. 

Matlock and onto the A5012 

through Kestledge back to 

HarleyWorld. 

A great ride with great friends, 

and one I wouldn’t have missed 

because it’s these rides that 

make you realise what it’s like 

to be part of the best chapter in Chesterfield ….. Peak 

Riders.

Circus Maximums X 

8th — 10th June 2012 

WET WET WET……”can it 

get any wetter?” That was 

the thought that was 

whizzing around my head. 

I’d been checking the 

weather info all the week 

before the Rally, and it 

wasn’t looking good in the 

West—especially in the 

North Wales area. On the 

Thursday, the day before 

the Rally, gale force winds 

and a months worth of rain 

had devastated the area, with campsites flooded out 

and tents blown away. The forecast for the rally 

weekend looked bleak…….I rang around everybody 

and made plans to abort the visit, which would have 

been a first. But Joth was adamant that he was still 

going. “Good luck old 

chap…..” I thought and 

decided to call it off. Joe 

and Russ were also 

reluctant to cancel but 

agreed that it would be 

foolhardy to risk it. I kept on 

checking the hour by hour 

forecast via the ‘tintaweb’ 

and there seemed to be a 

window of drier weather 

which was due to arrive in 

the Chester area by the 

Saturday afternoon. So I was back on the phone and 

hatched a plan to meet on Saturday. 

Saturday 10:00 am at Maccy D’s Tankersley. Joe, 

Russ, Max, Sandra and little me all met up in dull but 

dry weather and set off heading for the Rally. We got 

to the roundabout at The 

Flouch and it starts to rain, 

then as we climb the 

Woodhead the fog closes 

in and the rain becomes 

torrential. These were 

horrendous conditions but 

we press on through 

Mottram and onto the 

motorway heading for 

Chester. The rain was still 

bouncing down until we 

reach the outskirts an hour 

and a half later. When we 

reach the rally site the rain 

stops and the Rally Ride Out 

appears at the same time with 

Joth, Beth, Adam and Louise 

in tow. Sandra decides that we 

are staying and proceeds to 

put the tent up. Joe, Russ and 

Max decide to pick up their 

rally packs and return home! 

However, we all make a visit 

to the Chester Harley 

Dealership, say our farewells 

before Sandra and I return to the rally site. The 

atmosphere seems a bit subdued but they had taken a 

bit of a battering on the Friday. 

We share a few beers sat around the tents with Joth 

and Beth and the others, then 

we make our way to the club 

house for the nights 

entertainment. The usual rock 

band turning out the usual 

rock covers with gusto, a bit 

of entertainment by John 

Twigg Director of Deva 

Legion and a boogie to the 

disco with all our Harley 

Chums who we have met 

over the years of rallying. It’s 

funny how even the worst 

weather never seems to dampen the enthusiasm of 

the Harley fraternity……… back to the tent but the 

storm that was threatening never really 

materialised……. 

Sunday morning dawned. What’s that in the sky? Its 

yellow and round and 

throwing some heat out….the 

Sun. We packed up in the 

sunshine said our farewells 

and headed home in the dry. 

It was well worth the effort in 

the end and I’m glad we 

made it…

Chapter Photo Ride—Derwent Valley 17th June 2012 

It seems like I’ve spent most of the last month 

watching weather forecasts, and looking to the sky for 

a hint of blue. Most of the time there was none, so 

when I awoke on the day of the Chapter Photo ride 

and there was SUN, I couldn’t believe it. It didn’t last 

and by the time I was getting the Harley out of the 

Garage it had clouded over with the threat of rain in 

the air. No sooner had I set off, heading for 

HarleyWorld, it was raining ... Live To Ride, Ride In 

T’Rain. 

The shower was short lived however, and when I 

arrived at HQ it had brightened a tad. There was quite 

a gathering: the usual suspects; and a few new faces 

with Sally and Steve Barker turning out for their first 

ride with us, on a pair of Sportsters. Russ gave us his 

usual briefing, I tried to help with translation where I 

could. We set off with 26 Riders and 6 pillions with 

Joth and Beth Sweeping and little me as wing man. 

Sat Nav had thrown a wobbly and sent him down the 

wrong road…..much apologising and the offer of him 

spending the rest of the day getting the muck off 

everyone’s bikes seemed to do the trick. I could hear 

Tony saying “that would never happen to me!”, but he 

still uses the reliable sextant and compass method of 

navigation. 

The mega breakfast and 2 mugs of tea hit the spot 

and we were soon back on board the Harleys over the 

Snake Pass to Derwent where we parked the bikes 

and headed for the foot of the dam wall to gather for 

this years chapter photo. The backdrop was 

spectacular with the water coming over the top in a 

torrent. I can’t remember it being like that in June 

before. We did the posing and then had a quick shufty 

around the collection of classic and vintage cars that 

was also there from the Spire Classic Car Club annual 

Father’s Day Rally. 

Up to Owler Bar and onto Hathersage, taking in the 

magnificent view from the Surprise over the Hope 

Valley, and on through Castleton up our favourite bit of 

Switzerland, Winnats Pass. A little further on Russ 

made a right turn down a what started has a road then 

turned into a bit of a farm track covered in the dreaded 

Cow Muck, “Mmmmmm” I thought, can’t remember 

this bit of the route, but after a bit of slipping and 

sliding we all made it to the other end of the lane and 

headed for the café’ at Glossop. It turned out Russ’s 

We headed back to HarleyWorld through Bamford and 

Hathersage retracing the route over Fox House and 

Barlow. Another great ride with our Peak Riders 

Chums ……. and we didn’t get wet. Now that’s a first 

this June!!

Skegness 24th June 2012 

I’d only been back in the 

UK for a few days and 

had missed riding the 

bike whilst I was away. 

Judging by the Ride 

Reports that were 

waiting for me when I 

got back, I also missed 

the great weather you 

guys had been having 

… Yuk!! So it was with 

mixed emotions that I 

peeled back the 

bedroom curtains at 07:00 on Sunday morning to see what 

was in store for my return ride to Skegness. Yep, you’ve 

guessed it, it was pouring down with rain!! Anyway, I’d 

talked myself into going for a ride no matter what the 

heavens had in store for me, so I set 

about getting everything ready. There 

was a grunty groan from underneath 

the bed covers, so I knew this was 

going to be a solo ride!! 

By the time I needed to pull Candice 

out of the garage, the rain had 

stopped. This coincided with the 

predictions that the BBC Weatherman 

had made, so I was reasonably 

positive of a dry-ish day …. 

Particularly as John Goodfellow had 

promised me a dry one, and he’s 

been 100% right so far!! Geoff Hep arrived at my front door 

and we rode off together towards HarleyWorld. 

After a little wait, Kev was there with 

the HarleyWorld gate keys and granted 

us entry to the site. We had 11 bikes and 

5 pillions which was a better turnout that 

I’d been expecting at 07:00 that morning. 

John Goodfellow was our RC for the day, 

supported by Big Rich as Sweeper and 

Kerry as Wingman. A swift briefing and 

we were on our way heading towards 

Bolsover and Ollerton, then Tuxford and 

over the Trent at Dunham before landing 

at Lincoln HD where we stopped for a 

coffee and look/see. This was as far as 

we got last year as the rain called an end 

a doughnut. 

Doughnuts for starter. Fish & Chip main. 

Followed by Doughnuts. Mmmm!! 

John is determined to get his 

£1 worth!!

year, we were all up for a 

day at the seaside!! 

It was the A158 all the 

way once we got out of 

Lincoln, a road I had use 

several weeks earlier 

whilst on the Iron Horse 

Rally - I’d picked Kim up 

from Lincoln station ….. 

we then went on to 

Skeggie for a coffee and 

It was a steady ride and nice to be on ‘A’ roads for a 

change. Fairly uneventful except for a Polish driver who 

decided to practice his rally-driving techniques whilst 

manoeuvring through the pack of Peak 

Riders—charming! We parked up close 

to the lifeboat station and headed off for 

some lunch. There was no other option 

for me …. Fish, chips and mushy peas. 

Mmmmm. True to his culinary etiquette, 

Big Rich decided that he needed a 

starter before he could have his fish & 

chip main course. Nothing else for it, it 

had to be a packet of 8 freshly cooked 

doughnuts—how does the lad do it? 

After lunch, a quick photo call before 

jumping back on the bikes for the return 

leg. 

Up the coast to Mablethorpe, before heading Westwards 

towards Louth and then Willingham 

Woods biker stop where we had a T & P. 

Market Rasen, Caenby Corner, 

Gainsborough, Worksop until we hit 

Barlborough where the ride ended. 

Well …. We did it!! 3 spots of rain when 

we hit to outskirts of Skegness, apart 

from that, nice and dry. Another great day 

riding with me Peak Rider chums. I now 

know why I came back from Portugal. 

Well done John & Crew, thanks for 

looking after us. Shame about England 

and the penalty shoot out with Italy !!!

World Ride 24th—25th 25th June 2012 

For years, H.O.G. members have banded together for 

Million Mile Monday. Now H.O.G. have kicked it up a 

notch with the Harley-Davidson® World Ride. The 

plan was to join all our ‘global’ H.O.G. Chums on June 

24-25 to show the world what it means to be part of 

the Harley-Davidson community 

Peak Riders Members did their bit and lots of you, 

despite the weather forcasts, jumped on our Harleys 

to participate. The figures are impressive. Based on 

the results posted on the World Ride website, our 

Chapter by itself out-rode several other countries! Well

Kathryn Middleton-Softail Deluxe 

I had never been on a motorbike until 

2004 when Adam went back to biking and 

bought a Triumph Bonneville. This was 

closely followed by us taking a guided 

Harley tour of America. Much as he 

enjoyed the Electra Glide we were riding 

there, he was sure his Bonny was what he 

wanted. We had one trip on the Bonny 

when we got back & when we visited my 

daughter at Uni in Leeds we called into the 

Harley Dealership ‘for a look’ and came 

away with an Electra Glide! I spent the 

next few years on the back happily 

watching the world go by as we toured 

Scotland, Germany, Austria and Ireland. 

We attended the European Rally when it 

was in Killarney & liked the area so much 

we returned to the Killarney Bike Fest in 

June 2009. This time there was a ‘have a 

go’ area set up so on a whim I decided to 

do just that to see if I could do this bike 

riding thing. I could - & I quite enjoyed it 

but thought that was the end of it. 

In the July Adam went to Canada for a 

week to visit his son and whilst he was 

there I booked myself onto a CBT course. 

I think he was quite surprised when he got 

back because he didn’t think I was that 

serious about it – but then neither did I – 

this was just a challenge & to prove to 

myself that I could do it. I passed that &

How long has Kathryn been riding?: Since November 2009 

What was his first bike? Sportster 883 Custom 

at the ripe old age of 57 booked myself 

onto the DAS course. I didn’t tell my 

daughters (or anyone else) as I was sure 

they would think I had lost the plot! The 

next day we happened to be passing 

HarleyWorld & called in just to see what 

bikes were available – I think I had 

decided by now that I was going to have 

one! I was drawn to a beautiful new white 

Sportster 883 Custom and before we left 

the deposit was duly placed. 

The next weekend the bike training 

began for real & I realised what I had let 

myself in for. All you die hard bikers 

never had to do a Mod 1 – lucky you – 

why did I need to manhandle my bike into 

& out of an imaginary garage, slalom 

down a row of cones & do 2 figures of 

eight, follow a walking person etc etc. 

Panic set in & I promptly returned to 

HarleyWorld & reclaimed my deposit with 

all thoughts of my own bike dashed. 

However, I had paid a lot of money for 

this course so I was determined to 

complete it. Training on the 125cc out on 

the road became quite enjoyable but I 

hated the manoeuvres. Then I had to 

move up to the 500cc which was initially 

terrifying but I soon adjusted to it. What I 

couldn’t adjust to though were the U turns. 

It did not seem logical to me to be looking 

over my shoulder whilst my hands were in 

front of me and I couldn’t get the hang of 

it. Then I had a brainwave. Adam & I 

went up to the school playing grounds, he 

marked out a turning area & I pedalled my 

way round the U turns on my pedal cycle! 

The practise worked & Mod 1 was passed. 

It was then back to HarleyWorld to order a 

bike – to discover that the white Sportster 

was still there – fate. The deal was done 

& the bike was to be registered for me to 

collect in March 2010. Mod 2 was then 


passed on 30 th November 2009 & we 

immediately booked a holiday to go 

touring in Spain & France. So 2 months 

after collecting my bike I was riding in the 

Pyrenees – fabulous. 

I travelled 9000 miles on this bike until 

the 9 th July 2010 when some kind woman 

decided not to stop behind me at a junction 

but to continue into the back of me, and 

my lovely white bike was no more. Not 

being ready for a ‘big’ bike I duly 

purchased another Sportster – this time a 

1200cc which I happily rode for another 

7000 miles. 

Then in June 2011 Adam and I decided 

to go to Riders Edge in Wales to take an 

Advanced Riders course. I was 

encouraged to ride a Softail Deluxe which 

I fell in love with. At the end of the 

training I was very proud to be awarded a 

Gold Standard ( 1 of only 4 ladies in 

Europe to achieve this) & not to be 

outdone Adam got gold too. 

I enjoyed the Deluxe so much I promptly 

ordered one when I got back! We’ve done 

many miles on our own, with our Peak 

Rider friends and with other friends – 

most of them very enjoyable – that’s if we 

ignore the mountain track on Mull that 

Adam took me over, the river on the way 

to Aviemore with Geoff last year and the 

recent farm track with Russ. We are off to 

Scotland for 2 weeks in August, including 

our annual visit to Aviemore. This will be 

our last visit there for a while as next 

August I will realise another dream. We 

are off to America & Canada to do another 

Harley tour, from Seattle to Denver via the 

Rockies, and this time I will be riding my 

own bike. 

I’ve discovered you’re never too old to 

try something new – what could be next?!

When many of us were boys there were loads of British 

bike manufacturers but not all of them made their own 

engines but bought them in. One of the all time favourites 

was the Villiers 197. It was a two stroke single that 

really put out a lot of smoke all of the time and had a 

characteristic pop pop sound. Over 50 manufacturers 

used this engine and some of them are pictured below. 

However one of those below did not. Your task is to identify 

the one without the Villiers 197.
