Ride Reports Big Jims Ride - Sunday 18th May 2008 Sunday the 18th of May Big Jim Thomson with his trusty sweeper Royce led a ride out to Ilam Country House in Derbyshire, 12 bikes with 20 members left Harley World on time after a first class briefing from Big Jim. The route meandered through Barlow towards Owler-bar and into Baslow; the traffic was now building up as it does on any summer Sunday. Overtaking the flat cap and glove brigade we rode on towards the main A6 to Buxton before turning off to one of Jims surprise back roads, with twists, bends, cow-pats, gravel, Cath, all kinds of other obstacles but we all made it ok. The piece-de- resistance was “The Tunnel” I have lived in Derbyshire all of my 40ish years!! and had no idea that this was here. The sound and roar of big pipes reverberating off the tunnel walls certainly made the twisting roads worthwhile, but unbeknown to the sweeper and after getting my recently cleaned & polished wheels wet, we did an about turn over a field, through a ford and had another blast back through the tunnel and onto some better and wider roads. prefer, but Doreen & Lyn being well versed in the art of seeing a tea room and getting to front of the queue first, without thinking made a bee line for the door, so in true fashion the teapot won again. Tea and cakes over we had the obligatory group photo then made our way back to the dealership for a final cuppa. I would have liked shares in that new vending machine, I understand that it almost makes as much profit as Dave England’s EVO corner. A good day out, well led, well done, and without the aid of a G.P.S. Royce Dave England’s Ride - Sunday 1st June 2008 The ride out was lead by Dave England our Chapter Director and the sweeper was Sharon Hardwick. Six bikes and Nine people left Harley world at 10.00am, where the ride headed off through Baslow and Youlgreave towards Hartington and up through Harper Hill. We reached our destination where Jim had arranged for the bikes to be parked on a hard standing area rather than on the grass, which also meant that we didn’t have far to walk to the tea room, which were quite busy, but as usual we commandeered a few tables and had quite a pleasant break with plenty of time to eat and explore the grounds. It was raining as the group of all weather riders set off where they encountered lots of mist as the ride got higher into the peaks, the group rode down part of the A53 and it was a welcome break when we got to the Peveril of the Peak hotel for refreshments of hot soup, sandwiches and a pot of tea. Leaving Ilam we rode passed our rally venue, The Peveril of the Peak Hotel and followed much of last year’s ride-out route. From here we diverted towards Monsel Head, Jim & Pandy’s favourite tea stop. I was led to believe that we were to enjoy an ice cream a 99 or what ever position you As the ride set off back to Chesterfield it stopped raining and brightened up the ride was steady as road conditions on B roads were not fantastic. In the middle of the afternoon we arrived back at Harley- World after a round trip of 102 miles, Overall a good ride and everyone enjoyed it. Dave England Peak Riders - www.peakriders.co.uk 4
Ride Reports Ghent 30th ~ 2nd June 2008 On Friday 30th May the intrepid duo of Steve Thomas & Dennis Dobson set off from HarleyWorld at 9am in two groups of 6 and 7 bikes with 22 people for the ride to the Channel Tunnel. After a quick blast down the M1 all 13 bikes arrived at Toddington Services in good time for a t&p stop, fill with petrol and then off to the Ace Café for our lunch. We went via the North Circular Rd with no problems. We arrived in great time for the Chunnel and Chris checked everyone in with efficiency and a happy smile for everyone. As usual the 35 min trip passed very quickly and we were off the train and into the service area where we were met by our Belgian Friends, Bernie, Sven and Luc. They escorted us on the 2 hr trip to our hotel where we were settled in. Our hosts even waited for us to get ready before escorting us to the local Chinese restaurant where we had a great meal and a much needed relax. Chris, Dennis & Steve Thomson, were asked to present a bouquet during the ceremony in honor of the fallen soldiers. This was a very special, Moving and sad occasion and many a tear was shed by us during this ceremony. Something we will never forget. Sunday morning we were again picked up at 9am for a ride to the coastal town of Knock, but first we rode to visit Lisa, Geraldine’s daughter and Bernie’s Niece. Lisa suffers from MS and now lives in a nursing home with other people in a similar situation. We presented Lisa with a Certificate and membership card, making her a life members of Peak Riders as well as T shirts, mugs and a key ring donated by Patrick at HarleyWorld, also in the pack was a 2 DVD set of our Rally and Birthday bash. This was also a very moving but uplifting morning and one that we would not have missed. We will be seeing Lisa again when we are in Belgium and we thank her for her friendship, as well as all of our friends from Ghent. Monday Morning, with heavy hearts we left Ghent for the journey to England, everyone who came to Belgium with us said it was the best weekend they had spent as well as the most worthwhile. Saturday morning our Hosts from the Ghent Chapter picked us up at 9am for the Flanders Field ride organised by Chiefke, we had a great day visiting war graves and memorials of young men killed in the war, a very moving and interesting day. Come 4.30 we arrived at a nice restaurant, arranged by Bernie and had a great meal where we met Geraldine, Bernie’s Sister. This led us on to a great part of the day when we were escorted to the Meningate to see the salute that takes place there every day a 8pm. Chris Robbins Peak Riders - www.peakriders.co.uk 5
