uel costs are rising, with seemingly no 

end in sight. So is food. Some of us are 

struggling to make mortgage or rent 

payments. Some of us are just trying to 

find a job to survive. 

We’re all feeling the painful squeeze of the 

increased cost of living in Hawaii. 

The story is the same throughout the 

nation. From April 28-29, 2008, America’s 

Second Harvest (A2H) conducted a “Local 

Impact Survey” of 49 food banks within 

their network. The purpose: to learn 

the challenges faced by food 

banks, their member agencies 

and clients today compared 

to one year ago. Overall, 

the number of clients 

served nationwide 

increased an average of 

15 to 20 percent. 

Survey respondents 

cited these contributing 

factors: 

• 92.78% - the rising 

cost of fuel 

• 91.67% - the rising 

cost of food 

• 46.11% - mortgage or rent 

issues 

• 43.33% - rising unemployment

In “Food Price Increases – Talking Points,” 

issued by A2H, April 2008, it was reported 

that prices for groceries in 2007 rose by 5 

percent, with the biggest increases in dairy, 

poultry, eggs, cereals and baked goods. 

However, while there are more people in 

need of food, there is less food to go 

around. Food banks nationwide are 

experiencing reduced food inventories, 

declines in USDA commodity 

distributions and a growing need to 

purchase food to 

supplement donations 

received.

of clients served or cut 

back on program hours.

Chapel, Kaneohe said she sees 20 to 30 

more people a month asking for food. She 

already helps feed low-income families, 

seniors and disabled clients at the 80 

apartment unit, Koolau Village in 

Kaneohe, with an additional 20 apartment 

units nearby and the homeless. 

Many of her clients run out of food 

stamps and funds before the end of the 

month because of rising food prices. She 

tries to help them with food when she can, 

but refers them to other agencies nearby 

when she doesn’t have enough to give.

need help,” Kim said.

Emy Gamiao who runs the food pantry at 

Waipahu Seventh Day Adventist Church 

used to distribute food every Sunday, but 

this year has cut back to every other 

Sunday because there just isn’t enough 

food to go around. 

She remembers the pantry served 4 to 5 

families a month when it first started in 

1996. Last year they served 40 to 50 

families per month, this year: 60 families 

per month. 

Despite the increased need for food, the 

church pantry resources are limited. Emy 

relies 100 percent on food donations 

distributed by the Foodbank. Without the 

Foodbank, the pantry would not have the 

food it needs to feed the families it serves. 

When the pantry is short, Emy refers 

clients to other churches, especially large 

families who are forced to rely on more 

than one agency to receive the food they 

need.

NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF LETTER CARRIERS 

FOOD DRIVE 

T 

he 16th Annual National Association of 

Letter Carriers (NALC) Food Drive was held 

on Saturday, May 10. The nation’s largest singleday 

food drive is organized by letter carriers 

each year to collect nonperishable food from 

postal customers to benefit community food 

banks. 

Adele Yoshikawa was overwhelmed with joy at the amount of food 

donations flowing into the Pearl City postal station. 

In Hawaii, letter carriers statewide worked 

throughout the day (some as early as 3:00 a.m.), 

collecting, transporting and storing donated 

food at their post offices. At 3:30 p.m., trucks 

and drivers provided by Anheuser-Busch Sales 

Company of Hawaii, Armstrong Produce, 

Hawaii Transfer Company, HFM FoodService, 

Honolulu Freight Service, ILWU, Local 451 the 

Pepsi-Cola Bottling 

Company of Hawaii, Sun Isle 

West and WDI Industries 

loaded their trucks with food 

and transported them from 

post offices to the Hawaii 

Foodbank warehouse. 

There the food was unloaded, 

weighed, sorted and boxed by 

over 187 volunteers. 

Meanwhile, drivers picked up 

more food, completing as 

many as 3 trips to and from 

post offices. Volunteers, letter carriers and staff 

worked throughout the night. A dinner of 

hearty beef stew was cooked and served by the 

staff and volunteers of Harbor House. The first 

day of the 2008 NALC Food Drive ended at 

10:00 p.m., with racks of food remaining and 

containers still to be picked up from post offices. 

On Monday morning, activity resumed with the 

arrival of four shipping containers provided by 

Matson Navigation to hold and transport food 

donations. Drivers continued their post office 

food pick-ups and deliveries to the Foodbank. 

Volunteers unloaded, sorted and boxed the food 

till 12:30 p.m. 

During the week, food 

continued to come in. 

The result: a record 

breaking 609,350 pounds 

of food were collected 

statewide to benefit the 

Hawaii Foodbank, Maui 

Food Bank, 

Kauai Food Bank and The Food 

Basket (Hawaii Island Food 

Bank). That’s a 96 percent 

increase in total pounds collected 

from last year! 

“This tremendous increase was 

due to the efforts of many,” said 

Mike Kajiwara, Hawaii Foodbank 

Director of Product Donations. 

“The plastic donation bags 

delivered to residents were 

sponsored by the AFL-CIO, 

HMA/SUMMERLIN and the 

Honolulu Letter Carriers 

(Branch 860). Over 190,000 

NALC announcements were 

provided by the HSTA, DOE, Aloha United Way 

and Service Printers Hawaii for distribution to 

over 300 schools. The media community 

promoted the food drive through TV, radio and 

print announcements. A special commercial was 

donated, produced and aired by Tiny Tadani of 

OC 16 featuring Bruddah Sam and Vaihi. Also, 

this year’s Planning Committee was essential in 

organizing the many 

details of this major 

event.”

HUNGER NEVER TAKES A VACATION 

July 27 to August 30, 2008 

Kraft Foods in Hawaii has partnered with Longs Drug 

Stores to launch “Hunger Never Takes a Vacation,” a 

fundraising campaign for the Hawaii Foodbank and 

neighbor island foodbanks. Offered from July 27 through 

August 30, 2008, the program will help feed families 

during summer vacation, a critical time when children 

go hungry since school meal programs are on hold. To 

make a donation during this year's campaign, shoppers 

should look for the bright orange “Hunger Never Takes a 

Vacation” tear-off coupons at Longs Drug Stores 

statewide. They can opt to tear off either a $5 coupon to 

give a child a vacation from hunger or a $10 coupon to 

give a family a vacation from hunger. The amount of the 

coupon, which becomes a donation to the Hawaii 

Foodbank, will be added to your receipt upon check-out. 

Kraft Foods will help kick-off the program by donating $5,000 to the Hawaii Foodbank. 

GUINNESS WORLD RECORD LARGEST GROUP HUG

Eleven-year-old Ashley Kakazu is attempting to break the 

Guinness World Record for the “Largest Group Hug!” The 

Group Hug will raise awareness of hunger in Hawaii and will 

also be a warm send-off for 2,000 Hawaii National Guard 

troops being deployed overseas. The event will be limited to the 

first 10,000 registered. An entrance fee of one can of food or 

more will be collected to benefit the Hawaii Foodbank.

Saturday, August 23, 2008: Build-Out 

August 23 to Sept. 7, 2008: “The People’s 

Choice Award” 

The American Institute of Architects, (AIA) Honolulu 

Chapter will be forming teams to build elaborate 

three-dimensional structures using canned foods. All 

foods used to build the structures will be donated to 

the Hawaii Foodbank. Teams will compete for the 

following categories: Jurors’ Favorite, Structural 

Ingenuity, Best Use of Labels, Best Meal, and Most 

Cans. “Canstruction” will be on display for two weeks 

at Pearlridge Center, Uptown. You can participate by 

voting for your favorite structure with a donation of 

one can of food. (One can = one vote.) The winning 

team will be given “The People’s Choice Award.” Last 

year Canstruction collected over 31,000 pounds of food to feed the hungry in Hawaii.

Great Chefs ® Fight Hunger ® 

PRESENTED BY AIG HAWAII

he 3rd Annual Great Chefs ® Fight Hunger 

was held on Saturday, March 22, 2008 at the 

2,500 square foot Hawaii Foodbank warehouse 

in Mapunapuna. Over 700 guests enjoyed some 

of Hawaii’s best cuisine, fine wines and ales, a 

martini bar and local entertainment — all to 

help feed the hungry in Hawaii. 

Early entry and VIP guests began arriving at 

5:00 p.m. Early entry guests enjoyed an 

additional hour of delicious food and beverages 

before sunset. Emcee Rocky Dunmire 

introduced the evening’s first talented 

entertainer: Jazzy Jay. His fluid, contemporary 

jazz sounds filled the warehouse, while the chefs 

prepared their signature dishes. 

VIP guests were personally escorted to their 

tables by the lovely Miss Hawaii USA, Jonelle 

Layfield, Miss Hawaii Teen USA, Emma Wo and 

Miss Kahala, Lindsay Furuya. VIP table seating 

was enjoyed by title sponsor AIG Hawaii, along 

with Accuity, LLP, Carlsmith Ball, Grace Pacific 

Corporation, Roger Godfrey and guests, HFM 

FoodService, HMSA, Y. Hata & Company, the 

James Campbell Company, the Shidler Group, 

Tesoro, and the Waikiki Business Plaza. VIP

guests enjoyed table and wine service by the 

wonderful staff of d.k restaurants. 

Other guests arrived at 6:00 p.m. to enjoy a 

variety of dishes offered by 16 participating 

restaurants. Each chef served generous portions 

of their featured dishes, as guests moved from 

station to station. All guests were offered a wide 

selection of fine wines, martinis, ales, coffees or 

soft drinks to complement their meals. 

Midway through the evening, Jerry Santos & 

Hoku Zuttermeister took the stage. Guests 

enjoyed classic songs from Olomana as well as 

Hawaiian instrumentals. Some guests momentarily 

forgot about food and drink and gave their full 

attention and appreciation to the duo. 

This year, a small silent auction was featured 

with gift packages including: two nights at the 

Hilton Waikoloa Village, Hawaii, a Sesame 

Street Live Premiere Package and a $100 

restaurant gift certificate package from Sam 

Choy’s Breakfast Lunch & Crab and Top of 

Waikiki. The silent auction raised additional 

monies to help feed the hungry and will be 

featured again next year.

wonderful slack key performance.

raised over $80,000 to feed the hungry. The 

Hawaii Foodbank gives special thanks to the

culinary talents to support this annual event.

donated their products and time to serve our 

guests. The evening would not have been 

complete without them.

HAWAII FOODBANK 4TH ANNUAL GOLF CLASSIC 

T here were over 200 

golfers playing in teams of 

three at the Hawaii Prince 

Golf Club on Friday, 

February 15, 2008. It was a 

day of friendly competition 

over the course of 27 

challenging holes to benefit 

the Hawaii Foodbank and 

help feed the hungry. 

Golfers began to arrive at 

9:30 a.m. to register and 

warm up. Many participated 

in a Putting Contest 

sponsored by Adecco, the 

Employment People. 

Golfers fueled up before tee off with lunches 

donated by Penske Truck Leasing & Rental, fresh 

fruits donated by Safeway Food and Drug Store 

and snacks donated by Frito-Lay of Hawaii. 

Beverages were generously donated by the Coca- 

Cola Bottling Company, Itoen and Anheuser- 

Busch Sales of Hawaii. 

At the 11 a.m. shot gun start, 67 teams started 

their 18 holes. Throughout the course, volunteers 

encouraged golfers to purchase Lucky Draw 

Tickets for the chance to win prizes during the 

dinner program. Prizes included gift cards from 

hotels, restaurants and other services. Proceeds 

from ticket sales would benefit the Foodbank. 

At the end of the day, golfers gathered at the 

club house to join emcee Kimo Kahoano for

GUY WAGES OCTOBER 7, 1954 – MARCH 2, 2008 

Hawaii Foodbank Board Director Guy 

Wages passed away on March 2, 2008 after an 

8-month battle with stomach cancer. 

Guy was a long and loyal supporter of the 

Foodbank. During his 7 years at the Pepsi 

Bottling Group, he served as company chair of 

the Food Drive campaign. Under his 

leadership, employee participation and 

donations increased dramatically. 

At Pepsi, Guy also organized the “Wheels of 

Steel” promotion featuring Kutmaster Spaz. 

Every year, the “Wheels of Steel” tour visited 

locations on Oahu to collect food and 

monetary donations for the Annual Food 

Drive. He continued to organize the 

promotion at Foodland and expanded the tour 

to various store locations around the island. In 

addition, he worked with the Food and 

Beverage Coalition to set annual goals and 

organize donation drop offs. 

On Food Drive Day, Guy was an enthusiastic

THE WORKS 

volunteer, energizing the Market City Change Angels to collect 

cash from drive by donors. In 2006, Guy proudly unveiled his 

newly constructed donation thermometer at Restaurant Row. 

The thermometer is featured each year in KGMB 9 broadcast 

updates, giving a strong visual on total pounds and dollars 

collected throughout Food Drive Day. 

In 2003, Guy joined the Hawaii Foodbank Product Resourcing 

Committee. The committee identifies new food donors and 

works to cultivate and 

maintain relationships 

with existing ones. Guy 

became a board director in 

2006 and served until his 

passing earlier this year.

CITY PROCLAMATION 

April 4, 2008 - Mayor Mufi Hannemann 

proclaimed April 2008 as “Food Drive” month in 

honor of the Hawaii Foodbank 19th Annual Food 

Drive. Mayor Hannemann also announced the 

city’s first “Stuff the Bus” campaign held 

Saturday, April 12, 2008. The mayor and cabinet 

members demonstrated by “stuffing” a city bus 

with 5,045 pounds of food donations collected 

during the City and County Employee Food Drive. 

HAWAII BANKERS ASSOCIATION FOOD DRIVE 

April 2, 2008 – The Hawaii Bankers Association (HBA) Executive 

Director Gary Fujitani (left) met with Foodbank president Dick Grimm 

(right) and members of the media to announce the kick off its first 

annual food drive to benefit the Hawaii Foodbank. All member 

branches served as collection points for canned food and monetary 

donations from April 2 through May 16, 2008. HBA members are: 

American Savings Bank, Bank of Hawaii, Bank of the Orient, Central 

Pacific Bank, First Hawaiian Bank, Hawaii National Bank, HomeStreet 

Bank, Ohana Pacific Bank, Pacific Rim Bank and Territorial Savings Bank.

KFC HAWAII CHECK PRESENTATION 

April 19, 2008 - KFC Hawaii presented a $25,000 check to the Hawaii 

Foodbank on Annual Food Drive Day at Restaurant Row to kick off 

their year-long statewide partnership. KFC Hawaii will collect monetary 

and food donations at all locations to help feed the hungry in Hawaii.

March 11, 2008 – The Hawaii Foodbank received 108,000 eggs (equaling 18,491 

pounds) from Hickman’s Family Farms in Arizona, a division of C&S Wholesale Grocers, 

Kapolei. The donation was part of a nationwide effort by the U.S. Egg Farmers,

HAWAII FOODBANK HUNGER WALK

oin the Hawaii Foodbank on 

Saturday, August 30, 2008 for the 

4th Annual Hawaii Foodbank 

Hunger Walk sponsored by the 

Harry C. and Nee Chang C. Wong 

Foundation. The annual walk is a 

fundraiser for Hawaii Foodbank 

member agencies that feed the 

hungry through food pantries, 

feeding programs, homeless 

shelters, rehabilitation centers 

and soup kitchens. The walk also 

serves to raise awareness of 

hunger in Hawaii. The Foodbank 

partners with over 250 agencies 

to feed 131,862 people statewide, 

including 32,965 children and 

14,504 elderly. 

Last year, 36 agencies raised a 

total of $42,225 to feed the 

hungry in their communities. Sts. Peter & Paul Church was 

the top agency fundraiser collecting over $6,000 to support 

its daily food pantry in Honolulu. Sts. Peter & Paul has 

been the top fundraiser 2 out of 3 years running – or 

walking in this case! Second and third place honors went 

to the Private Sector and Calvary Chapel Pearl Harbor. 

A perpetual trophy is prominently displayed at the Hawaii 

Foodbank as an incentive to all agencies to participate. 

Everyone is encouraged to sign up for the walk and make a 

contribution to their agency of choice. A listing of 

Foodbank agencies may be viewed at

Sts. Peter and Paul Church was awarded “Top Fundraiser” 

for the Hunger Walk on July 31, 2007, raising $6,072 for 

its daily food pantry services. Cora de Guzman accepted the 

award from Hawaii Foodbank president Dick Grimm.

donation will be divided among all 

participating agencies. In addition to the 

funds raised on behalf of each agency, 

sponsors Harry C. and Nee Chang C. 

Wong Foundation will match a 

percentage of all funds up to $25,000. 

The Foodbank will contribute an 

additional $25,000.

Free parking is available at the Honolulu 

Civic Center lot. Registration begins at 

8:00 a.m. Light stretching and warm up 

exercises led by David Jennings, owner 

of CURVES, Downtown will follow. The 

1-mile walk starts at 9:00 a.m. beginning 

and ending at Honolulu Hale. After the 

walk, relax and enjoy refreshments, live 

entertainment and keiki activities. Join 

us on Saturday, August 30 and walk to 

help our agencies feed the hungry in Hawaii.

what? In a 

relatively short 

and chaotic 

amount of 

time we’ve 

seen the price 

of gasoline leap skyward, the stock 

market plummet, two airlines fall out of 

the local market and much of the 

Midwest (our nation’s breadbasket) 

drown under floodwaters. Matson, the 

major shipper of everything we need to 

survive in our isolated island state, has 

been forced to raise its rates. You don’t 

need me to describe the financial domino 

effect. We’re living it— our household 

budgets and corporate bottom lines are 

paying the price. 

So where does that leave us? Hurting, 

confused and apprehensive. 

There has always been a need for food in 

our at-risk populations. But lately that 

population has grown, and the urgency 

is greater. Our shelves at the Hawaii 

Foodbank get replenished, only to be 

stripped bare in ever shorter amounts of 

time. The shortage of food is an 

international concern, but the effect of 

hunger is local. Our families, our 

children, our communities suffer. 

The good news in all of this gloom is that 

we in Hawaii still believe this truth—we 

are our brothers’ keeper. Ohana is not 

just a word; it’s a way of life. The proof is 

in your generosity. Despite our wavering 

economy you responded in a huge way 

and helped us meet our goals in our most 

recent annual Food Drive. With more 

people in need, you are stepping up to 

the plate, so to speak, and filling it up. It’s 

no miracle. It’s you. 

In the coming months, the challenge will 

only grow. We’re looking ahead and we 

know that the threats to our economy 

and to our security will not go away 

easily—if at all. That means our 

commitment will be tested, and I believe, 

based on what we’ve seen before, that we 

will pass the test. We will not let down 

our families in need. 

We live on the most isolated landmass on 

earth. That means we must depend on 

each other for help and for sustenance. If 

children go hungry, we feel responsible. 

And we take our responsibilities seriously. 

As we head into the second half of the 

year, I want to congratulate you on a job 

well done, and remind you that the work 

continues. I have every confidence we 

will rise to our challenges. 

We thank you, again and again, for your 

past and continued support in helping 

us feed Hawaii’s hungry.
