Helping to Feed Hawaii’s Hungry for 29 Years

Dear Friends,November 2012It’s been a tough year for the Hawaii Foodbank. Economic conditions and drought inthe Midwest impacted our usual sources of food. The U.S. Department ofAgriculture reduced our allotment of surplus food by more than one million pounds. And food donations were down from local farmers, manufacturers and wholesalersby almost 700,000 pounds.Yet the need in our community is still growing, and we have pledged not to letanyone in our ohana go hungry. Thanks to your generous contributions, we were prepared to meet the challenge. We increased our food purchases from 2 million pounds last year, to almost 3.4million pounds this year — the highest in our 29-year history.Your support helped us distribute over 12 million pounds of food or about 1 percentmore than last year on Oahu and Kauai. Our Kauai Branch completed its first full year of service, distributing 580,000pounds of food to needy folks on the island. Our Kauai Branch staff has increased, ashave the number of agencies now receiving our food.Every sector of the community comes together in our mission to feed the hungry.Whether it’s a donation of canned goods, harvesting farm-grown produce, volunteering on Food Drive Day or giving some loose change, these acts ofgenerosity are expressions of aloha from each company and individual to Hawaii’sohana in need.As long as we pitch in together, we can sincerely say to our co-workers, neighborsand families in need, “The Hawaii Foodbank is here for you.”Mahalo to all of you,DICK GRIMMPresidentLINDA CHU TAKAYAMAChair4

FOOD DONATIONS & DISTRIBUTION 2012FOOD DONATIONS & PURCHASESThe Hawaii Foodbank received over 12.4 million pounds ofperishable and nonperishable food donations in fiscal year 2012.Food purchases totaling nearly 3.4 million pounds, represented26 percent of total donations received. Monetary donations fromthe community and allocations from our annual operating budgetpurchased a variety of fresh produce, canned meals, cannedprotein, canned fruits and vegetables and containers of rice. The Hawaii Foodbank received fewer donations from localmanufacturers, wholesalers and growers. In addition, weexperienced a one million pound or 54 percent decrease inUnited States Department of Agriculture (USDA) product.USDA food products include: canned fruits and vegetables, canned meals, applesauce, tomato sauce, pasta, rice andpeanut butter.Food purchases have become a necessary and increasingcomponent of our distribution to counter decreasingdonations each year.To increase donations, the Hawaii Foodbank seeksopportunities year round with new and former food donors. In 2012, the Hawaii Foodbank signed 29 new donors on Oahuand 21 on Kauai.FOOD DISTRIBUTIONOver 12 million pounds of food were distributed from ourwarehouses in Mapunapuna on Oahu and Puhi Industrial Park,Lihue, Kauai.Total distribution increased by 469,959 pounds. The greatest growth in our daily food distribution was throughthe Ohana Produce Plus Program, representing 59 percent ofour total distribution. Over 4.4 million pounds of freshproduce and over 3.1 million pounds of assorted foods wasdistributed to 21 communities across Oahu through 28 agencies.Fresh produce distributions increased by 1.4 million pounds or 32percent from last year.We also shipped 166,594 pounds of food to our PartnerDistribution Organizations, the Maui Food Bank and The FoodBasket on the Big Island to help feed people on the Neighbor Islands.MEMBER AGENCIESThe Hawaii Foodbank partners with nearly 250 member agencieson Oahu and Kauai. Our network of nonprofit agencies are food pantries, feedingprograms, homeless and abuse shelters, rehabilitation centers, soup kitchens and residential programs for the elderlyand youth at risk. All Hawaii Foodbank agencies distribute food or servehot meals free of charge to the needy. The Hawaii Foodbank values its partner agencies andthe outreach services they provide to the community.Agency staff and volunteers are key components togetting the food out to the people who need it.Over the past year, some of our agencies facedchallenges that temporarily prevented them fromdistributing food or forced them to close their doorspermanently. For some, challenges included loss offederal or state funding, agency mergers, budget cutsor damage and repairs to their facilities. And as with Harbor House in Waimanalo and Once-A-Month Church in Haleiwa, the unexpected passingof longstanding and respected leaders caused fooddistributions to temporarily cease in thosecommunities. The Hawaii Foodbank continually seeks new agenciesto help distribute food, especially in remotecommunities where residents have limited access toemergency food services.HonoluluFil-AmSDASt. Timothy ChurchHonoluluFil-AmSDAHale Hoomalu– Kauai6

OHANA PRODUCE PLUS PROGRAMFor 15 years, the mission of the Ohana Produce Plus Program has been to collect, deliver anddistribute fresh produce and other nutritious foods to underserved communities on Oahu.Communities served have higher incidences of hunger, homelessness and low income households. We also serve North Shore and Windward communities where there are fewer outreach programsto feed people in need.In 2012, the Hawaii Foodbank and 28 partner agencies distributed over 3.6 million pounds offresh produce through the program, an increase of 1.1 million pounds of produce or 31 percentfrom last year. Program outreachextended even further since each person served represented a familyhousehold of two or more. The Ohana Produce Plus Program is for many families, their only source offresh fruits and vegetables. Produce distributed through the program providesneeded nutrients in their diets and supplements food families can affordthrough store purchases or food stamps.Last year, the Ohana Produce Plus Program served 21 communities on Oahuthrough 28 partner agencies.GEOGRAPHY COMMUNITY PARTNER AGENCYHonolulu Downtown/Kakaako Community Life Resource CenterHonolulu/Kakaako Institute of Human ServicesEast Honolulu King’s Cathedral/Angel Network CharitiesKalihiFeeding the Hungry/Surfing the NationsKalihiKokua Kalihi Valley (KPT)KalihiPalama Settlement (Kaahumanu, Puahala,Kamehameha IV)Liliha/Kapalama Calvary Assembly of GodPaloloMutual Housing Association of HawaiiCentral Oahu Aiea/Halawa First Assembly of GodAiea/HalawaHonolulu Community Action Program– CentralWahiawaHouse of Faith Christian MinistriesWhitmoreHouse of Faith Christian MinistriesWaipahuLighthouse Outreach Center Assembly of GodWahiawaFirst Assembly of God – WahiawaWaipahuWaipahu United Church of ChristWaipahuCity of RefugeWahiawaFeeding the Hungry/Surfing the NationsLeeward Coast Nanakuli Hale Ola Ho’opakolea, Inc.WaianaeHonolulu Community Action Program– LeewardEwa BeachBoys and Girls Club, Ewa BeachMailiParadise ChapelNanakuliCity of JoyMailiCalvary Chapel Pearl HarborWaianaeSacred Heart Church WaianaeNorth Shore Haleiwa North Shore Christian FellowshipKahukuHope Chapel KahukuWindward Coast Kahaluu/Kaneohe Honolulu Community Action Program– WindwardKahaluuKEY ProjectWaimanaloSt. Matthew’s Church Kokua Food Basket7
