Mahalo To Our Agency: First United Methodist ChurchIn 1980, First United Methodist Church (FUMC)on Beretania Street created a volunteer group forwhat was then a humble food pantry for peoplewho came to the church in need of emergencyfood. The pantry started as a small closet, with nooperating budget and only three volunteers.Over the years, the pantry has gradually expandedin size to about 1,500 square feet, with half a dozenrefrigerators, freezers and air conditioning. Today, the pantry is staffed with an average of 16 to 20volunteers a week from the congregation, community members and other United MethodistChurch members. Each day, staff and volunteers assemble anddistribute bags of food to clients that will last 3days or more. A typical bag includes assortedcanned goods, pasta or rice, bread and whenavailable, fresh produce, baked goods, butter or margarineand cheese. For families with children or dependents, separate bags aremade for them, with food and serving sizes specific to theirage group.FUMC now serves an average of 450 to 500 individuals andfamilies a month, an almost tenfold increase since they firstopened their pantry doors in 1980. The pantry is openMonday through Friday, two hours each day.FUMC assistance goes beyond a standard bag of groceries. The pantry often serves as a gateway to other forms ofassistance. Staff and volunteers refer individuals andfamilies to other agencies like the Samaritan CounselingCenter, Goodwill Industries of Hawaii, the Salvation ArmyLissi Chadwick (center) with volunteers Fran Freamon (left) and Jordan Ledgerwood (right) on atypically busy day at the pantry.and other food pantries and nonprofit organizations.Clients in need of shelter are referred to the H-5 Program, which prepares meals in the church kitchen with food fromthe Hawaii Foodbank. If clients have a spiritual need, theyare invited to attend church services and meet theministers. All clients are made to feel welcome and valued.Lissi Chadwick, FUMC Foodbank Coordinator and herhusband Richard Chadwick have been serving the needy inthe community for over 30 years. They visit the Foodbanktwo to three times a week to stock the church pantry andprepare for its daily food distributions. Lissi explained theirmission and approach, “We try to give people things theylike and are good for their bodies. We treat our guests likefriends. We try to give them choices and our guests havecommented on how much they appreciate it.”Harry C. & Nee Chang C.Wong FoundationFOOD DROP OFF AREAApril 3, 2013 – David Hamil, Rotary Club ofWaikiki Treasurer (right), delivered 985pounds of rice from the “Rotary Rice Rally” to HawaiiFoodbank Food Drive Manager Kim Bartenstein (left).Together, the 25 Rotary Clubs on Oahu collected over15,000 pounds of rice or 11,811 meals!

And I do mean a bit—maybe a day or two at the mostbefore everyone starts cranking upthe gears again.I had a little time to reflect on what Isaw from the drop off site atWaiokeola Congregational Church inKahala. Once again, I was impressedwith the organizational effort that goes into pulling off a statewidefood drive. And once again, I was blown away by the volunteerswho make it possible.I can’t list every group that donated time for this great cause. Butyou know who you are—churches and clubs, schools and serviceorganizations. You are families, neighbors and individuals whowanted to lend a helping hand. You are the dogooders and thestalwarts of the community. You provide the energy that fuels ourmission. You are angels. Some people get a lot of credit—the TV folks, the radiopersonalities, the big sponsors, the government and industrycoalitions —and they deserve it. They provide such a valuableservice. There is no way we could operate without them. But you know what? The people who make them look good, whoprovide the foundation for success, are you—the volunteers.Volunteers organize and take part in the company and industrywidefood drives that lead up to the big day.On Food Drive day you, the volunteers, man the dropoff sites, drumming up enthusiasm throughout the entire state.Volunteers do everything. They pass out water and provide snacks. They carry big bags of rice and heavy boxes of canned goods fromthe cars. They sort and pack the food and pull and push the loadedpallets to the trucks.Volunteers stand, walk or dance for hours on aching feet in the sunto collect your money in their fishnets. And they are so, so happyand grateful when you respond. Our volunteers don’t ask for recognition. They just want to dosomething good. They want to give back.I wish I could give each and every one of you a medal for yourgenerous heart. Since I can’t do that, I will simply say on behalf ofthe Hawaii Foodbank, mahalo. A very, very, very BIG mahalo! You know that scene in the movie Jerry Maguire when Tom Cruisetells Renee Zellwegger, “You complete me?”Well, all of you wonderful volunteers for the Hawaii Foodbank—you complete us. Without you, we are nothing. You’re the betterpart of a match made in heaven.
