The nation’s largest singleday food drive is organized by letter carriers each year to collect nonperishable food from postal customers to benefit community food banks. Adele Yoshikawa was overwhelmed with joy at the amount of food donations flowing into the Pearl City postal station. In Hawaii, letter carriers statewide worked throughout the day (some as early as 3:00 a.m.), collecting, transporting and storing donated food at their post offices. At 3:30 p.m., trucks and drivers provided by Anheuser-Busch Sales Company of Hawaii, Armstrong Produce, Hawaii Transfer Company, HFM FoodService, Honolulu Freight Service, ILWU, Local 451 the Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company of Hawaii, Sun Isle West and WDI Industries loaded their trucks with food and transported them from post offices to the Hawaii Foodbank warehouse. There the food was unloaded, weighed, sorted and boxed by over 187 volunteers. Meanwhile, drivers picked up more food, completing as many as 3 trips to and from post offices. Volunteers, letter carriers and staff worked throughout the night. A dinner of hearty beef stew was cooked and served by the staff and volunteers of Harbor House. The first day of the 2008 NALC Food Drive ended at 10:00 p.m., with racks of food remaining and containers still to be picked up from post offices. On Monday morning, activity resumed with the arrival of four shipping containers provided by Matson Navigation to hold and transport food donations. Drivers continued their post office food pick-ups and deliveries to the Foodbank. Volunteers unloaded, sorted and boxed the food till 12:30 p.m. During the week, food continued to come in. The result: a record breaking 609,350 pounds of food were collected statewide to benefit the Hawaii Foodbank, Maui Food Bank, Kauai Food Bank and The Food Basket (Hawaii Island Food Bank). That’s a 96 percent increase in total pounds collected from last year! “This tremendous increase was due to the efforts of many,” said Mike Kajiwara, Hawaii Foodbank Director of Product Donations. “The plastic donation bags delivered to residents were sponsored by the AFL-CIO, HMA/SUMMERLIN and the Honolulu Letter Carriers (Branch 860). Over 190,000 NALC announcements were provided by the HSTA, DOE, Aloha United Way and Service Printers Hawaii for distribution to over 300 schools. The media community promoted the food drive through TV, radio and print announcements. A special commercial was donated, produced and aired by Tiny Tadani of OC 16 featuring Bruddah Sam and Vaihi. Also, this year’s Planning Committee was essential in organizing the many details of this major event.” Mahalo to the NALC, the Hawaii Association of Letter Carriers, transportation support, local sponsors and the many volunteers who made this event a success. Thi Lam, 792-1202 HUNGER NEVER TAKES A VACATION July 27 to August 30, 2008 Kraft Foods in Hawaii has partnered with Longs Drug Stores to launch “Hunger Never Takes a Vacation,” a fundraising campaign for the Hawaii Foodbank and neighbor island foodbanks. Offered from July 27 through August 30, 2008, the program will help feed families during summer vacation, a critical time when children go hungry since school meal programs are on hold. To make a donation during this year's campaign, shoppers should look for the bright orange “Hunger Never Takes a Vacation” tear-off coupons at Longs Drug Stores statewide. They can opt to tear off either a $5 coupon to give a child a vacation from hunger or a $10 coupon to give a family a vacation from hunger. The amount of the coupon, which becomes a donation to the Hawaii Foodbank, will be added to your receipt upon check-out. Kraft Foods will help kick-off the program by donating $5,000 to the Hawaii Foodbank. GUINNESS WORLD RECORD LARGEST GROUP HUG Sunday, August 17, 2008 ALOHA STADIUM Eleven-year-old Ashley Kakazu is attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the “Largest Group Hug!” The Group Hug will raise awareness of hunger in Hawaii and will also be a warm send-off for 2,000 Hawaii National Guard troops being deployed overseas. The event will be limited to the first 10,000 registered. An entrance fee of one can of food or more will be collected to benefit the Hawaii Foodbank. Michelle Kakazu, 671-4411, ext. 7 www.GroupHugHawaii.com THE 3RD ANNUAL CANSTRUCTION ® AT PEARLRIDGE UPTOWN Saturday, August 23, 2008: Build-Out August 23 to Sept. 7, 2008: “The People’s Choice Award” The American Institute of Architects, (AIA) Honolulu Chapter will be forming teams to build elaborate three-dimensional structures using canned foods. All foods used to build the structures will be donated to the Hawaii Foodbank. Teams will compete for the following categories: Jurors’ Favorite, Structural Ingenuity, Best Use of Labels, Best Meal, and Most Cans. “Canstruction” will be on display for two weeks at Pearlridge Center, Uptown. You can participate by voting for your favorite structure with a donation of one can of food. (One can = one vote.) The winning team will be given “The People’s Choice Award.” Last year Canstruction collected over 31,000 pounds of food to feed the hungry in Hawaii.
