Dear All,
I would like to share with you my notes taken at the conference
organized by the German Chamber of Commerce on 14/4/2009
where the guest was HE Minister Mr. Rashid Mohamed
Rashid and the moderator was Mr. Naguib Sawiris.
Me, Taher and Maged attended it.
Why did we go? To listen about today and future expected markets
trends and Government plans.
Personally I had once again the confirmation that in Egypt there are VERY
BRILLIANT people and that if they have the opportunity they can really
make the difference.
I also have to underline that HE Minister M. Rashid apart of being as we
know a very successful businessman ( Eco have worked in his Lipton’s
factory where we tested the integrity and quality’s staff level he has). We
were impressed by the amazing number of diplomas, certificates, awards
etc. Just to mention few…he has diplomas from the top worldwide universities
as Stanford, MIT (Boston) and Harvard..
Well, I wish any of my children to have in their life this “will to know” and
aim to these targets!!!
Any way these are my notes:
He spoke first generally, and then he mentioned his 4 priorities before
entering into a Q&A with the people attending.
Generally he touched these points interesting for me:
MINDSET: he clearly mentioned this as one of the main obstacle to progress
and reforms, at all levels in the country.
WORKAHOLIC: Naguib Sawiris described the Minister as one of the
hardest workers he knows.
BE FOCUSED: he made clear that he always work hard to stay focused on
his targets.
NEXT STEP: he pushed us all to keep always thinking on what to do
next, what we want to be, in 3, 6 months and 1 year. Make sure that
even now there are opportunities. You need to be creative and listen
your customers / markets.
STAY AHEAD: he gave few example and stressed the importance to stay
ahead of your competitors, the need now more than ever to move fasters
than the “others”
COMPETITION AND FREE MARKET: he openly admitted as businessman
that he would never make any change unless he is forced or feeling his
business would die, accordingly he suggested that competition is
needed to improve quality of staff, of products, of services and life quality.
He also clearly suggested that each one of us must readjust /reset
the business rules to be ready to work with the new rules that shall be
applied after this biggest financial crisis in
the history.
His 4 priorities:
1. HR: at 360 degrees, including better leaders, better government staff,
workers. Education and continuous training to improve lifestyle and
put Egypt in the world map as China and India.
2. PRODUCTIVITY: need to be improved and it is only in our hands, to
be developed we must focus on Egyptian human being and we must
develop our human resources.
3. INFRASTRUCTURES: Government’s budget approved 2 months ago to
be spent within next June, roads, sewage, water, electricity,
schools. He would like to see Egyptian specialized company to be
internationally recognized as Orascom Telecom in the telecom sector
(15 years ago nobody would have ever dreamed in Egypt to have
such qualitative internationally recognized company).
4. DECENTRALIZATION OF GOVERNAMENTAL POWER: He believes that
power (money) must be delegated to Governors (N. Sawiris suggested
to choose them possibly not from former Army or Police
Generals) to manage their community needs more efficiently, timely
and to be made accountable to their population if failing to keep
promises.
He strongly expressed his support to reach democracy, where law and
order are implemented.
Well I let you interpretate the above, personally I was impressed from
his sincere and well organized speech proving to be fully aware and in
control of what must be done, the answers he gave to the people
were also very very honest and constructive giving much
importance to the need to safeguard the consumers and
poor people that cannot defend themselves…. My conclusion
notes:
As you know we have dismissed several staff, why?
As you know 10 months ago we have engaged a Consultant to help us to
restructure our organization to be more efficient, flexible and qualitative.
By coincidence the actual market downturn have just clashed with this
program giving more exposure to those that were not performing, not
doing what expected, not active and just staying in the shadow, practically
we have accelerated our decisions .
Today any Company in the World must take care of the few resources
available and try to use them for the staffs that really are adding value
and working honestly, hard and care about their future and colleagues’
future. In this period as I keep repeating (see my eco news) every Company
shall cut all those trees or branches just drinking water without
producing any fruits and ECO is following such path
Certainly we shall insist to upgrade ONLY THOSE STAFF interested to
grow and to give back to ECO, trainings shall keep going, trip abroad
also, we also hope to keep maintain incentives (as cars or others)
but!!!!! All monitored closely, and all those staff choosing to “take”
from ECO shall be requested more than others to “give back” to ECO, …
DAILY and HONESTLY !!!
These are normal rules applied to ECO when we enter into a job and
accordingly they must be applied back to back to all Eco’s Community!!!
We rather prefer and be aware to have an empty place that we know we
need to cover than to have an occupied place that do not cover the job
and duties agreed/expected.
Important Issue
Swine flu: Your questions
Governments around the world are
striving to contain a new flu virus suspected
of killing more than 100 people
in Mexico. Experts warn swine flu could
spark a global pandemic. BBC News online put a number of your questions
to flu expert Maureen Baker, Head of Pandemic Planning at the
Royal College of General Practitioners.
My friend has recently got back from Mexico, he has been feeling
ill, now I have developed what seems like a normal cold. I
have had if for about four days and there is no sign of getting
better. I haven't been to a doctor. What do you advise?
I think if you have symptoms of a cold - and have had these
for four days - then this is almost certainly a normal cold. For
more detailed advice (or if your friend wants further information)
it might help to contact NHS Direct.
How does 'flu' actually 'kill' someone? How long
does it take from becoming infected with virus to death, if
that is the outcome?
Flu is an unpleasant illness but one that normally leads to complete recovery
within a week or so for most people. The danger from flu is
mainly from complications, especially pneumonia. If people who have flu
become much worse, especially if they start to have breathing difficulties,
pneumonia should be suspected. If pneumonia develops, that probably
needs to be treated in hospital with antiviral and/or antibiotics. Some
patients with pneumonia can deteriorate very quickly, others may have
an illness over a number of days or even weeks.
The swine flu is from Mexico but how did it come about and is
it going to spread in the UK?
Presumably a new strain of flu developed in pigs and then passed to humans
(probably people who work with, or live in close proximity to,
pigs). At present, we don't know if it will spread to the UK but the authorities
are closely monitoring the situation.
Is there a risk that if the emerging swine flu H1N1 virus comes
into contact with the established bird flu H5N1 virus that the
two could mix and cause an even bigger pandemic risk?
Any new strain of flu poses a risk of developing into one that can quickly
spread and turn into a pandemic. Even if these two strains were to meet
and lead to evolution of another new virus, I would have thought that
would take some time and were it to happen would probably be neither
more or less dangerous in itself than any new strain of flu.
Is the basic flu jab sufficient to protect against this virus?
No - so far as we know at present.
We have booked a holiday to Cancun Mexico in August we
have got young children, should we cancel and go elsewhere?
Hopefully by then the outbreak will have passed, however travel advice
is regularly updated on the Foreign Office website. Let's hope you are
able to go and have a lovely holiday!
I have no spleen and I'm concerned that I will find it hard to
fight the flu virus if contracted. Is there anything I can do to
pre-prepare myself?
You should be very careful in having meticulous hand hygiene,
washing your hands frequently with soap and water or using
alcohol hand rubs.
Should this become a pandemic strain, some patients (and
people who have had splenectomies may be in this group) may
be directed to take a course of antibiotics if they develop flu
symptoms. If this course of action is recommended, then GPs will receive
guidance and arrangements will be made for patients for whom such
treatment is recommended.

What can you do to protect yourself?
Stay informed. Stay updated regularly as information becomes
available.
Wash your hands often with soap and water,
especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcoholbased
hands cleaners are also effective.
Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when
you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the
trash after you use it.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs
spread that way.
Use disinfectants on frequently touched surfaces.
Germs can also be spread when a person touches
an infected surface and then touches their own
eyes, mouth or nose.
Stay home if you get sick. CDC recommends that you stay home
from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from
infecting them.
Avoid crowds and other social distancing measures.
Improve airflow in your living space by
opening windows.
