Welcome
Kathy Michaelian
Kathy Michaelian welcomed the group and asked if anyone had any comments about the
minutes from the last meeting. There were none, the agenda was accepted and the
minutes approved. Everyone introduced themselves for the benefit of the guests.
Annual Assessment Evaluation Summary
Vicki Duggan
The group has been meeting officially for one year and the results from the survey that
was distributed to the group after the last LTC meeting were discussed. The same
questions of the other governance groups were asked: What’s working? What can be
improved? Are the key members represented? Other comments?
Vicki opened the floor for comments. Kathy Michaelian noted that more than one person
said that there should be more than one faculty rep from each campus. Perhaps they
should be faculty who are not technically savvy. John Coliton said there were 9 people at
GT who are interested in joining the committee. We need to find a way to work people
on and off the committee. We should go to Academic Assembly and ask them to appoint
3 more members, one from each campus. Ben Turek suggested that there be more
students. There were transportation issues for one of the current student members. We
can videoconference people in from other campuses if necessary.
Thoughts on things we could improve:
• Ed Palasynski suggested that we have a separate portion of the website with links
to presentations we’ve already had. They could also be added to the podcast
directory.
• Kathy Michaelian has had trouble finding the website and it needs to be easier for
faculty to find. Ruth Gill will look into options.
• Ed Riggs asked his faculty what they thought about the LTC and half of them
didn’t even know about it. His faculty offered to develop a marketing campaign.
There needs to be more exposure and awareness about the committee and the
college campus. Ruth suggested doing something more with the Facebook page.
• Kathy liked the guest of the month idea, especially the administrators. She was at
the ETSC meeting in April and there was some confusion about the purpose of the
LTC. Kathy asked if everyone would be ok with inviting specific guests to attend
future meetings.
• John Coliton asked if there should be representation from the adjunct faculty.
Yes, everyone agreed. Ruth suggested posting info about the meetings in the PT
faculty newsletter.
• Vicki Duggan offered that the LTC doesn’t really know what the faculty are
interested in. There is so much that technology can offer; the question is how do
you sift through it and figure out what people need/want? She thinks we should
discuss this further at future meetings. MC has a range of people with different
technology needs.
• Matt Harchick suggested exploring less intrusive technology.
• Another factor is the role of distance education when we have sustained outages,
like the snowstorms last December. Some faculty were able to keep moving
using technology, others were not. We need to make sure we are using the
technology we have more effectively.
Everyone agreed that the right people are represented on the Committee. John Coliton
noted that there is positive reaction to the technology of the month – we need to keep that
up going forward. Vicki thanked CTL, CPOD and DL for the training offerings in
support of the technologies of the month.
Action Item: Ruth Gill will follow-up with Kim Emery about making the LTC website
easier to find.
Technology Preview: Jing
Linda Zanin
Linda Zanin presented a demonstration of Jing, a complement to Camtasia and Snagit,
which can receive information from Jing directly. The parent company is TechSmith.
Jing clips are less than 5 minutes. She has used it on their DMS website and she and her
students use it on their discussion board. Sometimes it’s easier to show an explanation.
Jing doesn’t take any thought, unlike Elluminate. She’s had fewer Elluminate sessions as
a result of using Jing.
Jing is a free program, but they also offer a paid version for $14.95/year. She ran the
demo from the Jing site. Jing is compatible with Windows and Mac. For more
information, the link is http://www.jingproject.com.
The Diagnostic Medical Sonography program uses Jing for orientation with new students
as well as on their department WIKI. You hyperlink an image, word or file. Linda
embeds info into her syllabus involving showing them how to find the syllabus within
WebCT to make the course more interactive. A Jing is computer friendly immediately.
If you save it as a file, it’s a flash file. If you upgrade to the Pro version, it’s an mp4 file.
Question: Where do the Jing’s reside? They are screencasts. You can create folders and
organize your files. You can make folders public or hide them and move them. There is
only 2GB of storage with the free version; you get 8GB with a paid account. Everyone
who uses it loves it. Linda will send the summary electronically so everyone can test the
links themselves.
You have to make sure recipients have Flash on their computers. Linda sends the Flash
link with her Jings just to be sure they can open them.
Question: The video media is moving video? Yes, but sometimes it’s the instructor
moving within the image. The Pro image allows you to capture images from your
webcam.
Question: Can you load a Jing onto MyMC? It’s possible under groups, a channel or
even Inside MC.
This would be a great thing for Banner and MyMC training. The students love it; they
want to Jing Linda! They use it on their own discussion board. It’s in addition to the
discussion requirements of the class.
Question: Have you bought the Pro version? No, but Linda is going to.
John Coliton offered that even Faculty can use this!
Doug Griffith brought the latest version of Campus Technology that lists Jing as Web 2.0
tools. Clare Delaney will send out a link to the article.
Kathy Michaelian said that we could do a Technology of the month on Jing in the fall.
The Office of Distance Education will offer training. Vicki said that we need to make
sure that the helpdesk is brought up to speed first.
Question: Does Jing do captioning? Linda thinks there is something available. Ruth
said we would look at that if we use it on any of the public domains. The Pro version
probably has it.
Action Item: Clare Delaney will send the Committee a link to the Campus Technology
article about Web 2.0 tools.
Technology Previews/Technologies of the month for FY11
All
We need to plan now so that CPOD can arrange for training.
Technology Preview Ideas:
Ginger – It’s being used on a trial basis.
Lecture Capture – Sonic Foundry (we should talk about this further)
Jaws/Dragon Naturally Speaking – provides transcripts of podcasts
LTC Meeting Minutes 5/6/10 Page 3
Technology Preview Ideas (continued):
Inspiration – graphic organizing
IPads
Films on Demand
LibGuides
ITV offering podcast filming
Wikis – a practical approach
Clickers – perhaps a vendor would lend us a classroom test set
Technology of the Month Ideas:
Jing
Films on Demand
Wikis – Krista will find a month in the fall (maybe October) for just a WIKI class, not a
combined class
Podcasts
Clickers – we need to make sure we have enough available (they need to be standardized)
This may be a good time to revisit our Technology Fair idea. We could offer small
sessions on each campus – 2 hours – and have faculty demonstrating different
technologies. The key to successful demonstrations of technology is having faculty who
are using it show it.
We need a teaser to create awareness which we can work on over the summer. Perhaps
we can use a WIKI over the summer to make the arrangements. Ruth Gill will ask Kim
Emery to set one up. Matt Harchick asked if it would be possible to create a commercial
that could be posted on the website. Everyone liked that option. We can highlight
faculty using the technologies. Ed Palasynski envisions a 30 second piece made up of 5
second segments.
John Coliton talked about new projectors that are the size of a cigarette box. He will
show it to the committee when he gets one. You can run it from your I Phone.
Next Meeting
All
• Technology Preview: Second Life – Mike Mills, facilitator
• WIKI discussion
• Last meeting until September
Announcements
All
• Ben Turek will have a column in the RV newspaper
• Kathy announced that we have the funds for LeRoy Froom’s pilot. Ed Riggs will
submit a hardware request form. We need to establish the criteria for the pilot.
