August 12, 2011
Welcome to St. John Villa Academy.
This coming school year brings with it memories and remembrances
of 9/11 from Ground Zero. Ten years ago, the final act of many 9/11
victims was one of love. They reached out to their families, friends
and colleagues.
St. John Villa Academy has a strong tradition of reaching out to students, family members, faculty,
staff, administrators, and members of the local community in time of need with love and compassion.
On September 9th, 2011, we will celebrate the lives of the victims of 9/11: heroic first-responders, our
fire fighters, police officers, emergency service workers, Port Authority personnel, and innocent men
and women who were victims of the tragedy simply because their work or service brought them to the
site. This includes our alumnae/i who will be remembered at our Mass of Thanksgiving in their honor
and memory on September 9th - Adele Sessa from our High School and Salvatore Papasso from our
Elementary School.
As a Catholic Faith community, we encourage our students to comfort, console, and strengthen
others bringing hope and giving them wisdom to work tirelessly for a world where true peace and love
will reign in the hearts of all.
Let us together pray for the still grieving families and all who lost loved ones in this tragedy. May God
continue to bless and strengthen them bringing healing, peace, and the courage to live new lives.
May God’s blessings be upon you.
High School Highlights.......
Dear Friends,
The 2010/2011 academic year welcomed the 75th graduating class. The year was highlighted
by traditional senior activities including a special “75 days to graduation” celebration. It’s gratifying
that we were part of this historic event. Every time students graduate, it is bittersweet.
We are proud to see how much our students have grown intellectually, spiritually and personally
and we are grateful to have played a part in each student’s development. While this growth
is natural and expected, it is not any easier to see the young women we have grown fond of
graduate and leave us. We will miss the class of 2011, but are confident that the lessons and
values they have learned at Villa will serve them forever. Congratulations and best wishes to
these young women as they begin a new chapter in their life’s journey. May their futures be
filled with peace, happiness and success. It is our hope that as they continue to grow into
independent, confident women of faith, they will continue the mission they began here and will take time to serve all members
of our community with their gifts and talents.
This year we were saddened by the closing of St. Peter’s High School for Girls. All at Villa joined in a prayer that God
would grant the Peter’s community peace and solace. Recognizing that nearly 100 young women in our Catholic high
school community would no longer have a home, Villa girls expressed a desire to help. Realizing our mission, we held a
reception for the Peter’s girls and their families to introduce them to Villa. Monsignor Dorney and Mrs. Paula McKeown,
Principal of St. Peter’s, attended and have been very supportive. During the weeks that followed, we offered each Peter’s
girl an opportunity to apply for enrollment at Villa. The application/interview process was conducted in March. We are
pleased that a large number of the Peter’s girls who met our entrance requirements were accepted and have enrolled for
September. I am confident the warm welcome our Villa community has already extended to these girls and their families
will continue throughout the coming years. Many new members of our Villa family have expressed their desire to be active
members of our school and fully participate in all that we offer. We wish our new students, transfers or enrolling into
grade 9, an easy transition to their new Villa home. We hope our hospitality and spirit of family will make them love and
appreciate their new home as much as we do.
The young women of Villa accomplish much each year with this year no exception. Our Christian Service Program continues
to involve students above the minimum requirement in community outreach to foster a lifelong desire to serve others.
Our unique Major Course of Study Program, which challenges students to independently research and immerse themselves
into their own learning experience, continues to attract many students in all disciplines. Our successful, competitive
athletic programs continue to attract dedicated athletes who learn teamwork and sportsmanship. Our award-winning performing/fine
arts program continues to develop the talents of our artists and thespians. We continue to foster our students
altruistic desire to care for members of the local and worldwide communities by supporting their projects to raise money
and collect food.
Living our mission each day helps us envision a bright future for all at Villa. The new school year will open with exciting
new initiatives. We will initiate a new guidance system in September. The Naviance System is an academic, college
and career planning tool used by selective and competitive high schools. This technology system will enhance our guidance
counselors planning for each student and complement our already unique individual academic/personal counseling.
Another new technology advancement is the introduction of the Rediker student information system. This system is
widely used by many schools and includes features that will make communication between school and home much more
effective. Both of these technology advancements will be discussed with students during the first weeks of school and
with parents at our Curriculum Nights. Also, we will extend our collaboration with St. John’s University thru a joint venture
whereby St. John’s students, under the direction of their professors, will be on Villa’s campus to help mentor our students
with academic needs.
In closing, I would like to thank those people who have helped make this year a success. First, I thank God, with Whom
all things are possible. Thank you to the Sisters of St. John the Baptist for their support, prayers and guidance. I thank the
parents, past and present, for their cooperation and continued support and trust we will continue to work together to make
Villa a truly rewarding experience for all our students. Thank you to the Alumnae Association, the Mother’s Club, the
numerous volunteers, the coaching staff, and all who help in various capacities to add dimension to Villa. Thank you to the
dedicated and talented administrative staff, faculty and school staff. Finally, thank you to our students whose enthusiasm
and vitality for life inspire me each day. I look forward to working will all of you again in the 2011/12 academic year.
Together let us pray for each other during the coming months as we continue to pray for peace in our community and the
world. May God abundantly bless you and your family and keep you safe.
Dear Villa Parents and Friends:
Another successful school year, our 86th, has come and gone. I thank God for His never
ending love and generosity. I also want to thank the parents and friends who supported St.
John Villa Academy by either volunteering their time, talents and/or monetary donations.
It was a year filled with hard work, collaboration and dedication which resulted in an outstanding
and fun year for all our students and staff.
Congratulations to our 25, 8th grade 2011 graduates. They received scholarships to Catholic
High Schools totaling $152,000. Of these graduates, 3 were accepted into a specialized
program at S.I. and Brooklyn Technical High Schools. We also applaud 8 of our
new graduates who took the Integrated Algebra, Earth Science and U.S. History & Govt.
Regents Exams in June. This is the 5th year that select 8th graders took a 9th grade state
exam in Algebra and every year 100% passed. This is the 1st year that Earth Science and U.S. History & Govt. were offered
to select 8th graders. Both courses are 11th grade level and we are pleased that 100% passed both courses. These
students will get the Math, Earth Science and U.S. History and Govt. regent high school credits. We are very proud of them!
The year was filled with fun learning and creativity. We had our annual Christmas Fair combined with Christmas tree lighting
ceremony. We had two concerts and five successful productions: The Pilgrims (K-5th), Alice in Wonderland (5th-8th), Wizard
of Oz (3rd & 8th), Frog and Toad (K-5th) and Broadway Review (6th & 7th). Who could forget the 3rd grade-All Saints
Parade, the 2nd grade-First Communion, Villa’s Wax Museum, Father/Daughter Dance, Cotillion, Band recital. Our track
team was invited to cheer at the NYC Marathon for the 3rd time and NYC Road Runner races took place on our campus for
the first time. We congratulate all our teams for their effort in track, swimming, baseball and especially our basketball team
who placed 2nd in the Elementary League. We thank our dedicated student council who planned our charitable activities
throughout the year. The school year closed with a school wide “Spirit Day.” Everyone had FUN!
One of the many goals we had this past year was technology improvement. We are delighted to announce that in June, we
acquired 4 more SMART Boards. All classrooms at Villa Pre-K - 8th including the Science Lab, Computer Lab and Library
are now equipped with a SMART Board. This summer we will move the existing computer lab to a bigger location on the
2nd floor and add more wireless access points to each floor and the auditorium. This will make internet access possible for
classes and meetings that take place in these areas. We have purchased a set of 20 iPads for our 4th grade class. This
pilot program will begin in September. Integrating technology in the classroom is extremely beneficial for many reasons
including: student ability to research information quickly, read books, create blogs, take notes, conduct group/individual
projects, differentiated instruction and to take quizzes/tests. If positive results are demonstrated, then the iPads will be
introduced to two more classes the following year and the year after that. All of our faculty members have participated in
a professional development workshop on technology innovation, specifically in the use of SMART Boards. This August,
I personally took a two day workshop in the use of iPads in education. Teachers will be trained in this area as well. I am
confident that this program will be a success with everyone’s collaboration.
2011/2012 will bring a few changes to our curriculum and staff. We will be adding an Advanced Social Studies Course in
grade eight. All 8th graders who achieve an average of 85 and above in this subject will be given the opportunity to take the
U.S. History & Government Regent Exam at year end. This will challenge all the students in grade eight, not just a select
few. Since we received a grant of $8,000 from IACE (Italian American Committee on Education), we will be offering a 2nd
language to our students in grades 6-8. IACE is a NY based, non-profit organization founded in 1975 for the purpose of
promoting the study of the Italian language/culture within the tri-state area of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. So,
our students in grade 6 through 8 will have a chance to either take Italian or Spanish as a language starting in September.
At the end of the academic year we said good bye to Mrs. Christine Storch. Mrs. Storch left us this year after 6 years of
dedicated service to SJVA. Due to Mrs. Storch vision and love for SJVA, we have the best children’s drama program on
the Island. It was hard to say good-bye, but, we are glad that she will be spending more time with her growing family. We
thank her and will truly miss her at Villa. Mrs. Gaeta and I will be the co-moderators of the Student Council. Mrs. Gaeta will
be teaching Public Speaking (5-8) and Ms. Siuzdak will direct our after-school drama program (K-5).
As we reflect on the past, we are reminded that we have only done what we are supposed to do. Our main purpose is to
guide and inspire students: to love learning, to give service, and thus to give glory and honor to God. Thank you parents
for entrusting your children to our care and know that we deem it a privilege to share with you the spiritual, physical and
academic growth of your child. Here we are, facing another school year. If we can be certain of anything in this changing
world, it is that we will be facing many challenges during this coming year as in the past. But, working with individuals who
are talented, professional and dedicated, will go a long way as we work together to successfully meet the challenges that
the new school year will bring. God bless us all as we welcome our new school year with promise and excitement!
Greetings Villa Family,
The St. John Villa Academy financial reports for 2010-2011 show a very modest negative
balance for the year ending June 30th, 2011. Additional expenses were incurred as a result of our
restoration projects still underway. These projects were required as a direct result of the aging of our
buildings and for the safety of our students, staff and visitors to our campus.
Substantial effort on our part is expended to control expenses. Our Development income
(currently only 6% of the total) is significantly impacted by the amount of support we receive for fundraising
activities. The Academy continues to need your strong participation in our Annual Appeal and
fund-raising events.
*Scholarships and financial aid were supported in part from an unexpected bequest received and
included in our Development program.
