85 Years of Memories....Bridging to Tomorrow: A great Villa year! 

85th Anniversary Gala honorees with Sr. Lois Darold, C.S.JB.,

The past year has been an exciting and spiritually fulfilling one for 

everyone associated with St. John Villa Academy. Villa recently concluded 

its 85th Anniversary Year recognizing the 85 years the Sisters 

have educated the students of Staten Island and Brooklyn. It was 

truly a tribute to all the Sisters, administration, lay staff, students and 

alumni of Villa who have preceded everyone currently at the Academy. 

Themed “85 Years of Memories...Bridging to Tomorrow”, many events 

were used to celebrate both a memorable past and promising future. 

The year kicked off with a special Liturgy in March, 2009 honoring 

the service of many long time Villa associates. A family carnival and 

other 85th year themed events took place in the Fall of 2009. After 

months of planning by a committee of 27 chaired by Frank Cafaro, 

Mary Amato and Susan Taliercio, St. John Villa Academy hosted an 

85th Anniversary Celebration Gala. The memorable event was held on 

March 20th, 2010 at Nicotra’s Ballroom at the Hilton Garden Inn, Staten 

Island, NY. Attended by 325 guests, this beautiful evening and the 

commemorative historic journal distributed at the event were financially successful due to the generosity and support of the 

many friends of Villa. Several individuals and community contributors were honored at the event for their collective support 

and dedication in helping St. John Villa Academy remain vibrant and focused on the future. 

Honored were Sister Placid Baglino, C.S.JB. - 1946 SJVA alumnae and former elementary faculty member, Boarder 

Directress and Academy Financial Bursar; Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Ferreri - both SJVA alumni, parents of alumnae and strong 

Villa advocates; Mrs. George (Brunett) Daddi - Class of 1948, President of the SJVA Alumnae Assoc. and the driving force 

behind recognition of the importance of Italian culture at SJVA; Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Ogno - Cathy is a current faculty member 

with 20 years service as high school Math teacher and department chairperson, together the Ogno’s organized and 

chaperoned over 20 SJVA trips; New York Fire Dept. Engine Co.161 and Ladder Co.81 - the South Beach companies who 

have diligently served St. John Villa Academy for most of the 85 years it has existed. 

To bring its 85th Anniversary celebrations to a formal close, Sr. Anita Gramer, 

C.S.JB., President of St. John Villa, invited his Eminence Edward Cardinal Egan, 

Archbishop Emeritus of New York, to celebrate a concluding Mass of Thanksgiving. 

This special liturgy was concelebrated by the Co-Vicar of Staten Island, Msgr. 

James Dorney and Rev. Michael T. Martine, Pastor of St. Joseph’s Church in Rosebank. 

In addition to Sisters, administration, faculty, staff, parents, alumni and students 

of St. John Villa Academy, welcomed at the Mass were several noteworthy guests. 

Attending were Dr. Timothy McNiff, Superintendent of Schools for New York City; 

Dr. Joseph Gerics, Asst. Superintendent of New York City Catholic High Schools; 

Sr. Mary Cecile Swanton, C.S.JB., Provincial Superior of the American Province of 

the Sisters of St. John the Baptist, and visiting from Rome, Italy, Sr. Rosaria Di Iorio, 

Superior General of the Sisters of St. John the Baptist, and Sr. Jesusita Cubilio, 

C.S.JB., General Councilor of the Sisters of St. John the Baptist. 

Following the Mass, His Eminence Edward Cardinal Egan, as well as, his brother 

priests, Sisters, and honored guests were invited to a reception in the SJVA Convent.

Ongoing SJVA campus renovation continued July 14th with the removal of 

the large tree situated on the hill near the Convent Building. Sadly, Kelly Tree 

Services had to remove the 190+ year-old CopperLeaf beech tree because it had 

been dying for several years, losing branches and was becoming a safety concern. 

The 3 day process of removing the tree required a crew of 6 men, a six foot 

chainsaw, crane and log hauler. Nylon ropes were wrapped around the tree trunk 

pieces, the trunk was cut through and a crane was used to hoist the trunk pieces 

over the convent They were then deposited into a log hauling truck for removal. 

This tree was one of only a few of its species remaining on Staten Island as 

the Beech is more native to areas further south. Based on the number of rings 

counted - 182 - and the five outside inches, Kelly Tree Services estimated the 

tree’s age to be approximately 196. Pieces of the tree trunk will be varnished 

and utilized in both schools for science projects; other pieces will be supplied to 

the local museums who have requested them. 

Director of Campus Operations, Richard A. Riccio, Jr. said “While we all hate 

to see this beautiful tree removed, be assured that new trees will be planted in 

the Fall to replace it. All tree materials will be composted and completely recycled 

as well.”

Dear Friends, 

High school highlights... 

It is hard to believe that the academic year has come to a close. It seems just recently everyone welcomed 

me back to Villa. Your prayers and support have helped to make this a very successful year 

for our entire school community. I am pleased to share with you some of the initiatives we have 

undertaken this year and some previews of our future plans. 

We are very proud of all our seniors who graduated this year. The day the 136 seniors marched for 

the last time to the gym was an emotional walk for many. Sr. Antonia graced us with an inspiring invocation 

speech. We are very grateful to Mr. Watkins who accepted our invitation to be our commencement 

speaker. A news anchor from channel 11 News, he gave a meaningful, encouraging commencement speech. Our accomplished 

graduates were an inspiration to watch as they walked across the stage for the last time to receive their diplomas and awards. We 

extend our sincerest congratulations and best wishes to these young women as they end one chapter of their lives only to begin a new 

exciting one. May their futures be filled with peace, happiness and many successes. It is our sincerest hope that they take with them all 

the values and lessons they have learned here at Villa to be independent, confident Christian women and faithfully serve our Church in 

the future. 

We have made strides this year to become more eco friendly by increasing the use of our web solutions for communications. This past 

year we have utilized our student information system “Home Logic” to communicate with students and parents. Posted on the web 

site throughout the year were homework assignments, homeroom announcements, progress reports, our monthly news notes and our 

monthly calendar eliminating the need for Xeroxing these communications. Teachers each day recorded attendance directly on the 

system eliminating the need for attendance books. In this way we have saved resources for our school and our planet. It is our plan to 

increase the use of this system to include report cards, locker assignments, and electronic grade books for the faculty. 

Technology has moved forward in other ways as well. Since the winter ice and snow storm destroyed sections of our computer lab in the 

Chapel building, we were faced with the prospect of repairing or relocating the lab. We opted for the latter solution and have brought the 

computer lab into the media center, adjacent to the Library. We have acquired five more Smart Boards and projectors for our classrooms. 

These were purchased with New York State grant monies. Our future plans include having every classroom equipped with a Smart 

Board and improving our wireless service connections that can support this project. This summer more routers will be placed in locations 

in the building as well as in Founder’s Hall and the Cafeteria. In this way, wireless communication connections will be possible in these 

areas for class sessions or general meetings. Every faculty member this year will be supplied with a laptop that will be used for class 

sessions and administrative duties. These laptops were purchased through existing grant money. The new equipment will aide in better 

connections for lessons and presentations throughout the buildings. Our future goal is to introduce a laptop program for all students. 

At the end of this academic year, we also said a sad good bye to our longtime Principal’s Secretary, Mrs. Joanne Grzelak as she begins 

her retirement. Mrs. Grzelak has been a part of our Villa family since 1996. She has been an invaluable resource for everyone who has 

worked with her. Mrs. Grzelak frequently attended many events for the school and students, always lending her support. The scholarship 

foundation she established in her husband’s name, F.D.N.Y. Chief, Joe Grzelak has helped many students from St. Roch, as well as 

Villa. We all wish Mrs. Grzelak a well deserved retirement and hope to see her often at our events as our welcomed guest. 

It is my habit to thank those people who have helped to make the year a success. First, I thank God for all His love which is evident 

in our Villa community. I thank the parents for their cooperation and continued support and trust we will continue to work together to 

help the young women entrusted in our care grow in wisdom, spirit and grace. Thank you to the Sisters of St. John the Baptist for their 

constant support, prayers and guidance this year. Thank you to our very dedicated and talented administrative staff, faculty and school 

staff. Finally, thank you to our students who inspire me each day with their enthusiasm. I wish you all a joy filled, safe relaxing summer. 

Together let us pray for each other during these summer months as we continue to pray for peace in our community and the world. 

Remember with God all things are possible.

Elementary school highlights... 

Dear Villa Parents and Friends: 

I am very pleased to inform you 

of one of the many academic 

accomplishments during the past 

school year. Congratulations 

to six of our Grade 8 students 

(newly graduated) who took 

the Integrated Algebra Regents 

Exam on June 18th. This is the 

fourth year that select eighth 

graders took a ninth grade state 

exam, and every year we had 

100% passing. These students 

will get the math regents exam 

requirement for ninth grade. We 

are very proud of them! 

At the close of our past school 

year, many students were able 

to participate in our popular Wax 

Museum Interdisciplinary program 

and Dance Cotillion. We 

hope that these unique learning 

opportunities engage students 

and help everyone appreciate 

that education can be enjoyable 

on many levels! 

This coming year will bring a few 

changes to both our curriculum 

and staff. We will be adding an 

Advanced Science Program - 

“Earth Science” - to our 8th grade 

curriculum . This will challenge 

our gifted students. These students 

will be taking this course at 

SJVA High School together with 

“The faculty and staff wish to 

welcome you to the 2010/11 

school year...” 

High School students. This is in 

addition to our already successful 

Advanced Math Program for 7th 

and 8th grade. Starting in September, 

our students in Junior 

High will also use our state-ofthe-art 

Science Lab as part of 

their schedule at least once a 

week. 

The faculty and staff wish to

A Welcome from the New Alumnae Association President... 

As I take the reins as President of the St. John Villa Alumnae Association, I want to 

thank Kathy Feola for the wonderful job she did this past year. Kathy has taken the 

Alumnae Association to a new level. Her leadership proved to be invaluable to all of 

us. We were able to increase the scholarships given to the young women of Villa and 

we added a new one - an award to an incoming Freshman from SJVA Elementary 

School. We are committed to continue these scholarships going forward and we hope 

to increase them if at all possible. 

We are each united in the unique “Sisterhood” of being a Villa Alumnae. We have all been richly rewarded by 

the education we were given at Villa and we carry it with us each and every day. We ask that you keep giving 

back to Villa with your support.

Greetings Villa Family, 

The SJVA financial reports for 2009-2010 show a very modest positive balance for the school 

year ending June, 2010. These funds will be placed in a reserve account to offset the current 

$2 million dollar restoration project. The critical restoration work underway will repair Academy 

buildings and help preserve our campus into the future.
