<strong>The</strong> past year has been an exciting and spiritually fulfilling one for<br />
everyone associated with <strong>St</strong>. <strong>John</strong> <strong>Villa</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>. <strong>Villa</strong> recently concluded<br />
its 85th Anniversary Year recognizing the 85 years the Sisters<br />
have educated the students of <strong>St</strong>aten Island and Brooklyn. It was<br />
truly a tribute to all the Sisters, administration, lay staff, students and<br />
alumni of <strong>Villa</strong> who have preceded everyone currently at the <strong>Academy</strong>.<br />
<strong>The</strong>med “85 Years of Memories...Bridging to Tomorrow”, many events<br />
were used to celebrate both a memorable past and promising future.<br />
<strong>The</strong> year kicked off with a special Liturgy in March, 2009 honoring<br />
the service of many long time <strong>Villa</strong> associates. A family carnival and<br />
other 85th year themed events took place in the Fall of 2009. After<br />
months of planning by a committee of 27 chaired by Frank Cafaro,<br />
Mary Amato and Susan Taliercio, <strong>St</strong>. <strong>John</strong> <strong>Villa</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> hosted an<br />
85th Anniversary Celebration Gala. <strong>The</strong> memorable event was held on<br />
March 20th, 2010 at Nicotra’s Ballroom at the Hilton Garden Inn, <strong>St</strong>aten<br />
Island, NY. Attended by 325 guests, this beautiful evening and the<br />
commemorative historic journal distributed at the event were financially successful due to the generosity and support of the<br />
many friends of <strong>Villa</strong>. Several individuals and community contributors were honored at the event for their collective support<br />
and dedication in helping <strong>St</strong>. <strong>John</strong> <strong>Villa</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> remain vibrant and focused on the future.<br />
Honored were Sister Placid Baglino, C.S.JB. - 1946 SJVA alumnae and former elementary faculty member, Boarder<br />
Directress and <strong>Academy</strong> Financial Bursar; Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Ferreri - both SJVA alumni, parents of alumnae and strong<br />
<strong>Villa</strong> advocates; Mrs. George (Brunett) Daddi - Class of 1948, President of the SJVA Alumnae Assoc. and the driving force<br />
behind recognition of the importance of Italian culture at SJVA; Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Ogno - Cathy is a current faculty member<br />
with 20 years service as high school Math teacher and department chairperson, together the Ogno’s organized and<br />
chaperoned over 20 SJVA trips; New York Fire Dept. Engine Co.161 and Ladder Co.81 - the South Beach companies who<br />
have diligently served <strong>St</strong>. <strong>John</strong> <strong>Villa</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> for most of the 85 years it has existed.<br />
To bring its 85th Anniversary celebrations to a formal close, Sr. Anita Gramer,<br />
C.S.JB., President of <strong>St</strong>. <strong>John</strong> <strong>Villa</strong>, invited his Eminence Edward Cardinal Egan,<br />
Archbishop Emeritus of New York, to celebrate a concluding Mass of Thanksgiving.<br />
This special liturgy was concelebrated by the Co-Vicar of <strong>St</strong>aten Island, Msgr.<br />
James Dorney and Rev. Michael T. Martine, Pastor of <strong>St</strong>. Joseph’s Church in Rosebank.<br />
In addition to Sisters, administration, faculty, staff, parents, alumni and students<br />
of <strong>St</strong>. <strong>John</strong> <strong>Villa</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>, welcomed at the Mass were several noteworthy guests.<br />
Attending were Dr. Timothy McNiff, Superintendent of Schools for New York City;<br />
Dr. Joseph Gerics, Asst. Superintendent of New York City Catholic High Schools;<br />
Sr. Mary Cecile Swanton, C.S.JB., Provincial Superior of the American Province of<br />
the Sisters of <strong>St</strong>. <strong>John</strong> the Baptist, and visiting from Rome, Italy, Sr. Rosaria Di Iorio,<br />
Superior General of the Sisters of <strong>St</strong>. <strong>John</strong> the Baptist, and Sr. Jesusita Cubilio,<br />
C.S.JB., General Councilor of the Sisters of <strong>St</strong>. <strong>John</strong> the Baptist.<br />
Following the Mass, His Eminence Edward Cardinal Egan, as well as, his brother<br />
priests, Sisters, and honored guests were invited to a reception in the SJVA Convent.<br />

<strong>St</strong>. <strong>John</strong> <strong>Villa</strong> <strong>Academy</strong><br />
Ongoing SJVA campus renovation continued July 14th with the removal of<br />
the large tree situated on the hill near the Convent Building. Sadly, Kelly Tree<br />
Services had to remove the 190+ year-old CopperLeaf beech tree because it had<br />
been dying for several years, losing branches and was becoming a safety concern.<br />
<strong>The</strong> 3 day process of removing the tree required a crew of 6 men, a six foot<br />
chainsaw, crane and log hauler. Nylon ropes were wrapped around the tree trunk<br />
pieces, the trunk was cut through and a crane was used to hoist the trunk pieces<br />
over the convent <strong>The</strong>y were then deposited into a log hauling truck for removal.<br />
This tree was one of only a few of its species remaining on <strong>St</strong>aten Island as<br />
the Beech is more native to areas further south. Based on the number of rings<br />
counted - 182 - and the five outside inches, Kelly Tree Services estimated the<br />
tree’s age to be approximately 196. Pieces of the tree trunk will be varnished<br />
and utilized in both schools for science projects; other pieces will be supplied to<br />
the local museums who have requested them.<br />
Director of Campus Operations, Richard A. Riccio, Jr. said “While we all hate<br />
to see this beautiful tree removed, be assured that new trees will be planted in<br />
the Fall to replace it. All tree materials will be composted and completely recycled<br />
as well.”<br />

Dear Friends,<br />
High school highlights...<br />
It is hard to believe that the academic year has come to a close. It seems just recently everyone welcomed<br />
me back to <strong>Villa</strong>. Your prayers and support have helped to make this a very successful year<br />
for our entire school community. I am pleased to share with you some of the initiatives we have<br />
undertaken this year and some previews of our future plans.<br />
We are very proud of all our seniors who graduated this year. <strong>The</strong> day the 136 seniors marched for<br />
the last time to the gym was an emotional walk for many. Sr. Antonia graced us with an inspiring invocation<br />
speech. We are very grateful to Mr. Watkins who accepted our invitation to be our commencement<br />
speaker. A news anchor from channel 11 News, he gave a meaningful, encouraging commencement speech. Our accomplished<br />
graduates were an inspiration to watch as they walked across the stage for the last time to receive their diplomas and awards. We<br />
extend our sincerest congratulations and best wishes to these young women as they end one chapter of their lives only to begin a new<br />
exciting one. May their futures be filled with peace, happiness and many successes. It is our sincerest hope that they take with them all<br />
the values and lessons they have learned here at <strong>Villa</strong> to be independent, confident Christian women and faithfully serve our Church in<br />
the future.<br />
We have made strides this year to become more eco friendly by increasing the use of our web solutions for communications. This past<br />
year we have utilized our student information system “Home Logic” to communicate with students and parents. Posted on the web<br />
site throughout the year were homework assignments, homeroom announcements, progress reports, our monthly news notes and our<br />
monthly calendar eliminating the need for Xeroxing these communications. Teachers each day recorded attendance directly on the<br />
system eliminating the need for attendance books. In this way we have saved resources for our school and our planet. It is our plan to<br />
increase the use of this system to include report cards, locker assignments, and electronic grade books for the faculty.<br />
Technology has moved forward in other ways as well. Since the winter ice and snow storm destroyed sections of our computer lab in the<br />
Chapel building, we were faced with the prospect of repairing or relocating the lab. We opted for the latter solution and have brought the<br />
computer lab into the media center, adjacent to the Library. We have acquired five more Smart Boards and projectors for our classrooms.<br />
<strong>The</strong>se were purchased with New York <strong>St</strong>ate grant monies. Our future plans include having every classroom equipped with a Smart<br />
Board and improving our wireless service connections that can support this project. This summer more routers will be placed in locations<br />
in the building as well as in Founder’s Hall and the Cafeteria. In this way, wireless communication connections will be possible in these<br />
areas for class sessions or general meetings. Every faculty member this year will be supplied with a laptop that will be used for class<br />
sessions and administrative duties. <strong>The</strong>se laptops were purchased through existing grant money. <strong>The</strong> new equipment will aide in better<br />
connections for lessons and presentations throughout the buildings. Our future goal is to introduce a laptop program for all students.<br />
At the end of this academic year, we also said a sad good bye to our longtime Principal’s Secretary, Mrs. Joanne Grzelak as she begins<br />
her retirement. Mrs. Grzelak has been a part of our <strong>Villa</strong> family since 1996. She has been an invaluable resource for everyone who has<br />
worked with her. Mrs. Grzelak frequently attended many events for the school and students, always lending her support. <strong>The</strong> scholarship<br />
foundation she established in her husband’s name, F.D.N.Y. Chief, Joe Grzelak has helped many students from <strong>St</strong>. Roch, as well as<br />
<strong>Villa</strong>. We all wish Mrs. Grzelak a well deserved retirement and hope to see her often at our events as our welcomed guest.<br />
It is my habit to thank those people who have helped to make the year a success. First, I thank God for all His love which is evident<br />
in our <strong>Villa</strong> community. I thank the parents for their cooperation and continued support and trust we will continue to work together to<br />
help the young women entrusted in our care grow in wisdom, spirit and grace. Thank you to the Sisters of <strong>St</strong>. <strong>John</strong> the Baptist for their<br />
constant support, prayers and guidance this year. Thank you to our very dedicated and talented administrative staff, faculty and school<br />
staff. Finally, thank you to our students who inspire me each day with their enthusiasm. I wish you all a joy filled, safe relaxing summer.<br />
Together let us pray for each other during these summer months as we continue to pray for peace in our community and the world.<br />
Remember with God all things are possible.<br />

Elementary school highlights...<br />

I am very pleased to inform you<br />
of one of the many academic<br />
accomplishments during the past<br />
school year. Congratulations<br />
to six of our Grade 8 students<br />
(newly graduated) who took<br />
the Integrated Algebra Regents<br />
Exam on June 18th. This is the<br />
fourth year that select eighth<br />
graders took a ninth grade state<br />
exam, and every year we had<br />
100% passing. <strong>The</strong>se students<br />
will get the math regents exam<br />
requirement for ninth grade. We<br />
are very proud of them!<br />
At the close of our past school<br />
year, many students were able<br />
to participate in our popular Wax<br />
Museum Interdisciplinary program<br />
and Dance Cotillion. We<br />
hope that these unique learning<br />
opportunities engage students<br />
and help everyone appreciate<br />
that education can be enjoyable<br />
on many levels!<br />
This coming year will bring a few<br />
changes to both our curriculum<br />
and staff. We will be adding an<br />
Advanced Science Program -<br />
“Earth Science” - to our 8th grade<br />
curriculum . This will challenge<br />
our gifted students. <strong>The</strong>se students<br />
will be taking this course at<br />
SJVA High School together with<br />
“<strong>The</strong> faculty and staff wish to<br />
welcome you to the 2010/11<br />
school year...”<br />
High School students. This is in<br />
addition to our already successful<br />
Advanced Math Program for 7th<br />
and 8th grade. <strong>St</strong>arting in September,<br />
our students in Junior<br />
High will also use our state-ofthe-art<br />
Science Lab as part of<br />
their schedule at least once a<br />
week.<br />

A Welcome from the New Alumnae Association President...<br />
As I take the reins as President of the <strong>St</strong>. <strong>John</strong> <strong>Villa</strong> Alumnae Association, I want to<br />
thank Kathy Feola for the wonderful job she did this past year. Kathy has taken the<br />
Alumnae Association to a new level. Her leadership proved to be invaluable to all of<br />
us. We were able to increase the scholarships given to the young women of <strong>Villa</strong> and<br />
we added a new one - an award to an incoming Freshman from SJVA Elementary<br />
School. We are committed to continue these scholarships going forward and we hope<br />
to increase them if at all possible.<br />
We are each united in the unique “Sisterhood” of being a <strong>Villa</strong> Alumnae. We have all been richly rewarded by<br />
the education we were given at <strong>Villa</strong> and we carry it with us each and every day. We ask that you keep giving<br />

Greetings <strong>Villa</strong> Family,<br />
<strong>The</strong> SJVA financial reports for 2009-2010 show a very modest positive balance for the school<br />
year ending June, 2010. <strong>The</strong>se funds will be placed in a reserve account to offset the current<br />
$2 million dollar restoration project. <strong>The</strong> critical restoration work underway will repair <strong>Academy</strong><br />
buildings and help preserve our campus into the future.<br />
