DEVELOPMENT AND UNIVERSITY RELATIONS
THE DIVISION OF DEVELOPMENT and University Relations kicked off a number
of successful projects, beginning with the financing, groundbreaking and construction of
Aggie Suites student housing.
A&T became the first of the 16-member University of North Carolina (UNC) System to take
advantage of new legislation that allows foundations to work with financial authorities to secure
tax exempt bonds to fund capital building projects on state campuses. The $26 million project
was backed by North Carolina A&T University Foundation, Inc., which is aligned with the
Division. The Foundation also funded the purchase and refurbishment of an apartment facility
(Aggie Terrace) for married and graduate students, and it secured 44 real estate properties
through its Land Acquisition Program.
The Division spearheaded the first Piedmont Jazz Festival, one of the most exciting events to
hit the Greensboro/High Point/Winston-Salem Triad area in recent years that featured local,
national and internationally acclaimed performing artists. Headliners included Kenny Garrett,
Nneena Freelon, Ravi Coltrane, Eve Cornelius and Rachel Ferrell.
The Development Office raised nearly $20 million (100% more than the previous year) in
cash pledges and planned giving – a direct result of an increased staff, the creation of a Call
Center, and the implementation of a Financed Philanthropy Program.
In an effort to build relationships on and off campus, the Office of Alumni Affairs founded
the University’s first Student Alumni Association, co-hosted Family Weekend and coordinated
the first Aggie Cruise to Key West and Cozumel.
The University Relations Office coordinated a marketing program that successfully aided in
recruiting more students during the school year. Through the Office, the University continued
to gain local, national and international media coverage. In January, the University Relations
Office was moved to the Garrett House, which had been vacant since the 1990s. The new setting
provides better accessibility to the campus and community.
