2010 Season in Review
GAME 1 – Sept. 4
Shuford Stadium, Salisbury, NC
St. Augustine’s 20
CATAWBA 17
SALISBURY, NC – St. Augustine’s quarterback Joaquin Green threw for 202 yards and a pair
of touchdowns to lead the Falcons to a 20-17 win over host Catawba in the opener for both
teams. Green threw his first scoring strike with 4:49 left in the first half, covering 10 yards to
Jone’ Harris. The score came one play after Catawba was flagged for having 12 men on the field
as St. Augustine’s was setting up for a field goal. A bad snap on the extra point left the Falcons
with a 6-0 edge.
Catawba answered that score from the Falcons, driving 81 yards in eight plays. Patrick
Dennis went 5-for-7 in the drive for 68 yards. He connected with Gerron Bryant for a 21 yards
score with 1:15 to go in the half. Catawba had a chance to
add to its lead after a Brandon Bunn 18-yard punt return and
a Falcon personal foul, but a 33-yard field goal by Thomas
Trexler hit the upright.
Trexler did connect from 43 yards out four minutes into
the second half to give Catawba a 14-10 lead. The Falcons
answered with a drive to take the lead for good. Deonte
Toliver opened the drive with a 36-yard run to the Catawba
39. Three plays later, Green connected with Jamain Smith
from 25 yards with 9:05 left in the third quarter. A two-point
run by Brian Richards put the Falcons up 14-10.
Catawba was stopped twice on downs just outside the
Falcon 30 on its next two drives before St. Augustine’s
scored with just over two minutes left. On fourth down,
Walter Sanders ran in from 23 yards to give the Falcons a 20-
10 edge. Dennis led the Indians for one final score on a nineyard
pass to Bunn with 13 seconds remaining, but the
Falcons recovered the ensuing on-side kick to end the contest.
Sanders led the Falcons on the ground with 60 yards on 17 carries. Harris made five catches
for 87 yards. Dennis finished with 267 yards passing for Catawba, connecting on 24-of-40
passes and two scores. He also led the Indians with 44 yards rushing. Josh Wright added 40
yards on the ground.
Brandon Bunn set up the next Catawba score with a 47-yard punt return inside the Blue
