GAME 5 – Oct. 9 Shuford Stadium, Salisbury, NC Brevard 21 CATAWBA 31 GAME 6 – Oct. 16 Shuford Stadium, Salisbury, NC Carson-Newman 42 CATAWBA 16 SALISBURY, NC – Catawba scored the final 18 points to rally past visiting Brevard for a 31-21 victory on Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium and Kirkland Field. Josh Wirght scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns, while the defense held the Tornados to 73 yards in the second half. Catawba fell behind 21-13 after a four-yard run by Derek Church with 4:57 left in the third quarter. That would be the last points for the Tornados as the Indian defense allowed just one first down over Brevard’s next three possessions to rally. Thomas Trexler converted the last of his three field goals on the day, a 46- yarder, late in the third quarter to pull the Tribe within 21-16. Wright would put Catawba on top for the first time in the game on a four-yard pass from Patrick Dennis with 4:27 remaining. Eric Morman added a two-point conversion on a reception from Dennis for a 24-21 lead. One play after a Jumal Rolle interception, Wright scampered 49 yards to give the Indians the 31-21 edge. Lakeem Perry iced the game with an interception in the final minute. Brevard took the opening kickoff and scored in 10 plays as Michael Crumbaker went over from a yard out to give the Tornados a 7-0 lead. Trexler kicked field goals of 40 and 36 yards to pull Catawba within a point, but Brevard struck in the final minute of the half to go up 14-6. Church broke a 19 yard run on 3rd-and-11 to the Brevard 43 and two plays later Crumbaker completed a 57-yard scoring pass to Eric Watts with just 17 seconds remaining before intermission. Catawba got a break on its first drive of the second half when Gerron Bryant caught a deflected pass for a 36-yard gain to the Brevard 32. After a 20-yard run from Wright, Brian Terwilliger ran in from 11 yards out to make the score 14-13. A kickoff return near midfield set up the final Tornado score. Brevard converted three times on third downs and once on fourth in its 12-play, 47-yard drive that was capped by Church. Catawba then put its final scores together to rally, holding Brevard to just 31 yards on 20 plays after the Church score. Wright eclipsed the 100-yard plateau for the first time in his career with 101 yards on 15 carries. Dennis completed 16-of-26 passes for 219 yards. Bryant was the top target with five catches for 86 yards. Church totaled 92 yards to lead Brevard. Crumbaker completed 2-of-10 passes for 64 yards. Kelvin Jeter, who entered as the SAC’s top rusher at 129 yards a contest, was held to just 17 yards on 11 carries. Jeb Bass recorded a career-high 12 tackles on defense for Catawba, while Perry added 11 stops and a forced fumble to his interception. Alex Hartsell and Brandon Weedon posted sacks. Prince Simunyu and Ryan Wannamaker had sacks for Brevard. SALISBURY, NC – Carson-Newman scored 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter, including a pair of interception returns in the waning minutes to post the win on Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium and Kirkland Field. Nate Inman ran for 165 yards and one score to lead the Eagles, who did not put the game away until just over two minutes remained. After Thomas Trexler pulled Catawba within 21-16 with 12:11 remaining, Carson-Newman marched 92 yards in 17 plays to go on top 28-16 with 2:39 left. During the final drive that took over nine minutes, the key play for the Eagles was a 12-yard run by Jamie Bennett on a fake punt at the Catawba 37 with five minutes to play. Carson-Newman later converted a third-andeight on a nine-yard run by Inman and capped the drive on Brandon Baker’s four-yard run. Jaycob Coleman erased any Catawba hopes of a rally as he intercepted a desperation fourth-down pass and returned it 62 yards for a score with 1:19 left. Oliver Davis added a 27- yard pick for a touchdown with just 27 seconds remaining. Catawba held the early lead as the Indians went on top with 6:59 left in the opening quarter on a 13-yard pass from Patrick Dennis to Gerron Bryant. The Eagles answered on an 11- yard run by Doug Belk. The Indians would take the lead right back on a two-yard run by Josh Wright with 12:25 to go in the second quarter, but Carson-Newman scored twice in the final three minutes of the half to take the momentum. Inman hit for a 60-yard run at the 2:29 mark and following on interception by Tarvin Jones, Baker threw a 32-yard halfback pass to Jason Brown with 1:06 left before the break. Baker added 74 yards on the ground for Carson-Newman and completed the one scoring pass. Belk ran for 57 yards and completed 1-of-6 passes for 10 yards. Wright led Catawba with a career-high 105 yards rushing. Dennis was 17-of-25 through the air for 165 yards, but was intercepted three times. Anthony McAlister posted nine tackles for Carson-Newman and was in on two sacks. Jones had two interceptions as he also ended a third-quarter Catawba drive with a pick in the end zone. GAME 7 – Oct. 23 Setzler Field, Newberry, SC CATAWBA 28 Newberry 25 NEWBERRY, SC – Catawba rallied from a 17-7 first-quarter deficit to claim a 28-25 win over host Newberry on Saturday afternoon at Setzler Field. Patrick Dennis threw for a careerhigh 384 yards and three scores as the Catawba Indians grabbed a share of the league lead. Dennis completed on 24-of-41 attempts and was intercepted once in posting his career best day. Six of the passes went to Gerron Bryant, who totaled 195 yards and a score. Brian Terwilliger ran for 98 yards. Catawba cashed in on the first miscue of the game as Newberry, who had kicked an early field goal, fumbled the Tribe’s initial punt of the afternoon at their own 20-yard line. Five plays later Dennis tossed an eight-yard scoring pass to Brandon Bunn to give the Indians a 7-3 edge. Newberry scored twice before the end of the first quarter. The first as they answered the Catawba score with a 15-yard run by Lyndon Ingram. Next, the Wolves forced a Catawba fumble and Ron Parker returned it 72 yards to give Newberry a 17-7 lead at the 5:07 mark of the opening quarter. Catawba had an interception deep in Newberry territory and missed a 44-yard field goal on its next two possessions, but pulled within 17-14 after Jumal Rolle forced the first of his two fumbles on the day inside the Indians 10-yard line. Terwilliger got the score as he ran in from 59 yards out with 4:28 left before the half. The Indians took the lead for good on their first possession of the second half with Dennis throwing a 43-yard pass to Eric Morman. Catawba failed to add points on its next drive inside the Newberry five when it did not get a field try off. Dennis responded next with a 29-yard strike to Bryant and a 28-17 lead at the end of the third quarter. Rolle stopped an early fourth-quarter drive by Newberry with an interception in the end zone and the Wolves followed with a missed field goal on their next possession. Newberry closed within a score with 4:21 remaining, converting a fourth-and-ten with a 40-yard touchdown pass from Parker Hite to David Pressley. Terrence Wilson’s two-point run trimmed the lead to 28-25. Catawba was able to run out the clock from there as Josh Wright and Terwilliger ran for first downs on two third-down conversions. Ingram totaled 133 yards on 13 carries to lead the Newberry ground game. Pressley caught 12 passes for 155 yards. Hite and Bryan Ehrlich combined to pass for 292 yards for the Wolves. Catawba amassed a season-high 513 yards of offense and overcame three turnovers. Newberry suffered four miscues and were only 4-of-13 on third downs. GAME 8 – Oct. 30 Mears Stadium, Mars Hill, NC CATAWBA 38 Mars Hill 28 MARS HILL, NC – Josh Wright ran for a career-high 152 yards and added three scores as Catawba knocked off Mars Hill 38-28 on Saturday at Meares Stadium. The Indians rallied from a double-digit deficit for the second straight week, scoring 28 straight points in the second half after falling behind 21-10. Catawba used a 35-yard kickoff return by Nate Charest to midfield to begin its comeback. A 21-yard run by Rashaun Gaither led to a two-yard run by Wright to cut the deficit to 21- 17. After a Lion fumble, Patrick Dennis threw a 60-yard strike to Gerron Bryant to put the Indians up 24-21 with 4:42 left in the third quarter. Penalties hurt the next Mars Hill drive which was ended when Jumal Rolle intercepted Richt at the Catawba 10-yard line. Wright burst through for a 58-yard run to get the Indians out of its own end, but the drive ended inside the Lion 10 on downs. A bad snap on a punt led to the next Catawba score with Gaither running for 22 and Wright taking it in from the three. Mars Hill failed to convert on a fourth-down try deep in its own end and Gaither salted the game away with a 22-yard scoring run. Gaither nearly reached 100 yards to join Wright, finishing with 97 yards on nine carries. Dennis completed 12-of-21 passes for 146 yards. Jonas Randolph led Mars Hill with 188 yards rushing and three scores. Catawba limited the league’s top rusher to 41 yards in the second half. Jon Richt was 17-of-27 through the air for 245 yards. P.J. Gore had six catches for 125 yards.Mars Hill fumbled the ball away on its first three possessions of the game and Catawba built a 10-0 lead early in the second quarter. Damein Lee forced two of the fumbles and finished with two sacks and three stops for losses. Wright got the first score after the Indians took over at the Lion five. A Thomas Trexler 31-yard field goal pushed the lead to 10-0 with 12:45 to go in the half. The Lions rallied back. Randolph scored on a 47-yard run to pull Mars Hill within 10-7 and added a three-yard following a Catawba fumble to put the Lions up 14-10 with 3:35 to go in the half. The Lions struck to start the second half as Richt threw an 81-yard pass to Gore to set up a short run by Randolph to give Mars Hill the 21-10 edge.
