been shortlisted to win up to
£1 million of Big Lottery
funding to deliver an ‘ecoplan’aimed
at helping local
people live and work more
sustainably.
The lottery bid, led by Reddish
Vale Co-operative Trust, Manchester
Environmental Education
Network, Stockport Council,
The Kindling Trust, Stockport
Homes and The Co-operative
Group, is one of 30 schemes shortlisted
for the big cash prize.
The Partnership has received
£10,000 from the Big Lottery
Fund to develop proposals and create
a three to five year programme
of activities to target residents in
Brinnington, Reddish and Heaton
Norris, and Lancashire Hill.
Jenny Campbell, Headteacher
of Reddish Vale Technology College,
said: “Being shortlisted
brings us one step closer to our
goal of helping our communities
tackle the impact of climate
change. We already use our
school grounds, Farm and Reddish
Vale Country Park to carry
out a range of activities from litter
picks to apprenticeship programmes,
helping us to create

new economic opportunities and

Councillor Shan Alexander,
Executive Member for the Environment,
added: “From making
local, seasonal school menus to volunteering
on the school farm, to
membership of a food co-op to a
car-sharing pool, the potential for
creating a greener more resilient
community is endless. We hope
that residents, local businesses
and other voluntary groups will
get involved and support the bid.”
Over the coming months the
bid partners will be consulting
the local community and identifying
projects before submitting
a detailed delivery plan by June
24th. The Big Lottery will
choose 10 ‘Communities Living
Sustainably’schemes with funding
up to £1m each.

the excitement of the Olympic
Torch Relay.
On the day there will plenty of fun

DURING the winter Stockport Council
invested in extra resources for street
lighting, providing a dedicated team to
work at night to find and fix faulty
streetlights. Between October and
February over 750 street lights have
been fixed throughout the borough.
STOCKPORT Council will be
showing its support for Earth Hour
by switching off the Town Hall’s
exterior lights for one hour. Earth
Hour 2012 will be held on 31st March,
between 8.30pm and 9.30pm. It has
been organised by the World Wildlife
Fund (WWF) who are asking
households and businesses all over
the world to turn off all non-essential
lights and appliances during this hour
to raise awareness of climate change.

Parents spend a day in classroom
IT was all in a day’s work for electronics
expert Andy Pilling who
talked to pupils at his twin’s school
about the new industrial revolution.
Greenbank Preparatory School in
Cheadle Hulme is making use of the
‘immense wealth of knowledge’ in its
parent body to teach young minds
about the world of work.
Mr Pilling, who is European Business
Development Manager with EBV Elektronik,
talked to livewire young minds
about the electronics revolution.
He said: “The electronics revolution
really started about 40 or 50
years with military applications,
and the pace of development accelerated
with the advent of home computer
about 30 years ago.
“I work in the aerospace industry
and there are ever more applications
within that sector and across so
many other industrial and commercial
sectors. It’s important that our
youngest minds understand just how
important electronics is in modern
life and how it used in anything and
everything around them.”

School said: “Many of my senior
teachers have worked in commerce and
industry and we therefore appreciate
how important it is for our pupils to learn
from those who are making the sort of
innovations we will learn about tomorrow.
We have a series of high flying professionals

IMPROVEMENT works have
begun to the Visitor Centre at
Reddish Vale Country Park.
Last year Stockport Council
consulted residents and
interested parties on how
best to invest £82,000 left to
Reddish Vale Country Park in
a Will. The projects
prioritised for investment at
the park included £10,000 to
be spent on improvements to
the Visitor Centre which will
be supplemented by match
funding from the Friends of
the Vale group. Other
projects that are receiving
funding at the park include
the creation of a Memorial
Trail, improvements to

Parker will earn his first England cap
when he plays in a four nation international
series over Easter.
The St Ambrose College stalwart
from Mentone Road, Heaton Moor,
has graduated from wearing the
North of England under 15 shirt last
year to the full red rose emblem this
year. Kieran, 16, who is over 17
stone and 6ft 2ins, had never played
rugby before joining the Catholic
grammar school in Hale Barns, but is
now aiming for a professional career
and ‘hopefully a full England cap.”
Kieran will line up against
under-16 sides from Wales, Scotland
and Canada.
BUDDING palaeontologist
Boris Lam came eye to eye
with the dinosaurs of his
dreams when he won the
Manchester Grammar School
Dino drawing competition.
Boris, 10, from Elderberry
Way, Wilmslow, and a pupil at
Greenbank School in Cheadle
Hulme, was among 300 pupils at
the annual MGS Beswycke lecture
given by dinosaur expert Dr
Phil Manning.
During the day they had to
draw their own dinosaur with
Boris winning the special prize
of a dinosaur book for the most
lifelike Tyrannosaurus Rex.
Boris, who has left his homeland
in Hong Kong to get the
best possible education, could
not speak English 18 months ago
when he first arrived, but said on
winning the competition:“I love
dinosaurs. There are remains in
and around Cheshire and in the
Peak District just as there are
fossils back in Hong Kong, and it
is amazing to think that they
dominated the Earth 65 million
years ago.”

Lowe said: “Boris is a very talented
and hard working child
and we are delighted his parents
chose Greenbank from all the

The three women will be
responsible for developing best
practice across Borough Care’s
12 care homes in Stockport,
which provide care for more
than 400 older people, the vast
majority with dementia.
Their aim is to ensure that
having dementia does not prevent
a positive, fruitful and
enjoyable life.

Alzheimer’s, Vascular
Dementia, Parkinson’s Disease
and many more. Each type has
different causes and different
symptoms and each individual
will be affected differently.”
Lisa Martin continued:
“That is why it so important to
treat every person as an individual;
to carefully assess their
condition in detail and create a
care plan geared to their needs,
and that reflects what they can
do rather than what they can’t
do.”
Diane Tarmey continued:
“First and foremost this means
not doing anything for the person
that they cannot do for
themselves, not taking away
their skills, but helping them
to retain their independence as
much as possible, even if the
only thing they can do is wash
their face with a flannel in the
morning, it is important not to
take that away.”

Joe is the 19-year-old Director

Film Festival which will be
held this year at the town’s
historic Art Deco Plaza Super
Cinema in October. He has
just been awarded Young Citizen
of the Year at the Proud
of Stockport Awards for his
work in establishing the
Screen Stockport film festival
that has raised the profile of
the town on a national and
international level.
He also gained the personal
support and sponsorship of Col
Needham, the Founder and
CEO of IMDb - the world’s
biggest movie database. Col
was brought up in nearby Denton
and developed his love of
the movies watching films in
Stockport which inspired the
idea for IMDb which is now one
of the biggest websites in the
world. As part of this year’s

Honours
for young
YOUNG people from Stockport
celebrated receiving The Duke of
Edinburgh’s Award at a presentation
evening at the Town Hall.
120 young people from Schools, Colleges,
the Open DofE Centre and voluntary
sector organisations received
Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards.
The presentation event was presided
over by the Mayor of Stockport, Councillor
Les Jones. The awards were presented
by Martin Heald a member of
the Great Britain Amputee Football
Team. Several of those receiving their
Awards also entertained the audience
with music and dance.
To gain a Duke of Edinburgh’s
Award, young people need to reach the
required standard in four sections: volunteering
(any activity that helps others),
skill (such as playing a musical
instrument), physical recreation (such
as Judo), a multi-day expedition, and
at Gold level a five day residential project.
Councillor Stuart Bodsworth, Stockport
Council’s Executive Member for
Children & Young People, said: “I
would like to congratulate all the
young people from Stockport on their
fantastic achievements in gaining
these awards. To have so many people
from Stockport gain these awards is
very impressive. I would encourage

IN a bid to freshen up
the end of season at
Edgeley Park Jim Gannon
has brought in three
new players, with two
moving on.
Lancaster City’s leading
scorer Danny Hattersley,
Sunderland goalkeeper
Lewis King and Telford
defender Sean Newton
have all joined the Hatters
whilst Martin Gritton and
Sean McConville have both
departed.
Hattersley has represented
England at ‘college’
level and comes from the
same Myerscough College
‘academy’ set up that the
Hatters signed Anthony
Pilkington from, and is due
to complete his full time
studies at Myerscough in
the summer.
The 19 year old 6’ 3” forward,
who has notched 23
goals in all competitions this
season for the ‘dolly blues’,
has signed a short term contract
with the Hatters who,
out of respect for the part
that Myerscough College
and Lancaster City FC have
played in the development of
the player, have agreed an
undisclosed financial package
with both parties.
County Director John
Fitzpatrick has generously
agreed on behalf of Help the
Hatters to provide the club
with the finances to secure
the signing of this exciting
young player.
Gannon said: “I am keen
to accelerate the rebuilding
process at the club by bringing
in young dynamic players,
and with the departure
of Martin Gritton in mind, it
makes good sense to bring in
one such player in Danny.”
King has joined on loan
until the end of the season,
initially as cover for the suspended
Ian Ormson with
defender Sean Newton also
joining on loan until the end
of the season from AFC
Telford United.
Newton has made more
than 30 appearances for the
Bucks this season, and has
been Telford’s regular
penalty taker, indeed he
scored from the spot against
County back in September
in a 1-1 draw.
The Liverpool-born leftback
began his career with

£15.62 per game next season,
which I am sure you
will agree is fantastic value.

May. If we do not reach our
target we revert back to the
normal season ticket prices.
We have set up this system
where we take details in
advance so that we do not put
the club at any form of financial
risk. If we launched this
and only sold £300,000 of
tickets, this would of course
leave a big hole financially.
So it is better for us to see the
actual demand first before
we move forward with it”.
