Parents spend a day in classroom
IT was all in a day’s work for electronics
expert Andy Pilling who
talked to pupils at his twin’s school
about the new industrial revolution.
Greenbank Preparatory School in
Cheadle Hulme is making use of the
‘immense wealth of knowledge’ in its
parent body to teach young minds
about the world of work.
Mr Pilling, who is European Business
Development Manager with EBV Elektronik,
talked to livewire young minds
about the electronics revolution.
He said: “The electronics revolution
really started about 40 or 50
years with military applications,
and the pace of development accelerated
with the advent of home computer
“I work in the aerospace industry
and there are ever more applications
within that sector and across so
many other industrial and commercial
sectors. It’s important that our
youngest minds understand just how
important electronics is in modern
life and how it used in anything and
everything around them.”
Janet Lowe Headmistress at Greenbank
School said: “Many of my senior
teachers have worked in commerce and
industry and we therefore appreciate
how important it is for our pupils to learn
from those who are making the sort of
innovations we will learn about tomorrow.
We have a series of high flying professionals
working with us this term, all
of whom we met at the school gates.”
James for
England
POWERHOUSE prop forward Kieran
Parker will earn his first England cap
when he plays in a four nation international
series over Easter.
The St Ambrose College stalwart
from Mentone Road, Heaton Moor,
has graduated from wearing the
North of England under 15 shirt last
year to the full red rose emblem this
year. Kieran, 16, who is over 17
stone and 6ft 2ins, had never played
rugby before joining the Catholic
grammar school in Hale Barns, but is
now aiming for a professional career
and ‘hopefully a full England cap.”
Kieran will line up against
under-16 sides from Wales, Scotland
and Canada.
BUDDING palaeontologist
Boris Lam came eye to eye
with the dinosaurs of his
dreams when he won the
Manchester Grammar School
Dino drawing competition.
Boris, 10, from Elderberry
Way, Wilmslow, and a pupil at
Greenbank School in Cheadle
Hulme, was among 300 pupils at
the annual MGS Beswycke lecture
given by dinosaur expert Dr
Phil Manning.
During the day they had to
draw their own dinosaur with
Boris winning the special prize
of a dinosaur book for the most
lifelike Tyrannosaurus Rex.
Boris, who has left his homeland
in Hong Kong to get the
best possible education, could
not speak English 18 months ago
when he first arrived, but said on
winning the competition:“I love
dinosaurs. There are remains in
and around Cheshire and in the
Peak District just as there are
fossils back in Hong Kong, and it
is amazing to think that they
dominated the Earth 65 million
years ago.”
Greenbank Preparatory
School Headmistress Janet
Lowe said: “Boris is a very talented
and hard working child
and we are delighted his parents
chose Greenbank from all the
schools across the region.”
Mrs Lowe added: “It is the second
time a Greenbank pupil has
won the MGS Beswycke competition
in the last three years,
which is a magnificent achievement
considering how many
pupils attend the day.”
saw the Prop score the winning try in
Dementia Champions
Tarmey and Lisa Marti
STOCKPORT’S leading
provider of care for older
people Borough Care has
created three new Dementia
Champions.
The three women will be
responsible for developing best
practice across Borough Care’s
12 care homes in Stockport,
which provide care for more
than 400 older people, the vast
majority with dementia.
Their aim is to ensure that
having dementia does not prevent
a positive, fruitful and
enjoyable life.
Rosaleen Charles, from
Hyde manages Bryn Haven in
Brinnington; Diane Tarmey
from Brinnington manages
Carwood House in Brinnington
and Lisa Martin, from Dane
Bank manages Bruce Lodge in
Offerton.
Between them they have
over 70 years service in care
and have seen approaches to
dementia sufferers evolve dramatically
over the passing
decades.
Rosaleen said: “Dementia is
a blanket term which covers a
vast array of conditions including
Alzheimer’s, Vascular
Dementia, Parkinson’s Disease
and many more. Each type has
different causes and different
symptoms and each individual
will be affected differently.”
Lisa Martin continued:
“That is why it so important to
treat every person as an individual;
to carefully assess their
condition in detail and create a
care plan geared to their needs,
and that reflects what they can
do rather than what they can’t
do.”
Diane Tarmey continued:
“First and foremost this means
not doing anything for the person
that they cannot do for
themselves, not taking away
their skills, but helping them
to retain their independence as
much as possible, even if the
only thing they can do is wash
their face with a flannel in the
morning, it is important not to
take that away.”
CEO of IMDb - the world’s
biggest movie database. Col
and developed his love of
the movies watching films in
Stockport which inspired the
idea for IMDb which is now one
of the biggest websites in the
world. As part of this year’s
Screen Stockport events, Joe
has teamed up with his 17-
year-old brother Tom, an Art &
Design student at Aquinas College
in Stockport, to launch
The Teenage Market initiative
offering free stalls to young
Wonder of wood burners
WHO’D have thought that wood
burning stoves would actually
turn out to be the ‘sexy’ and
affordable part of the renewable
home energy package that
home-owners are happiest to
buy into.
That’s the verdict of The Stove
Yard’s Retail Manager Russell
Clarke after the company exhibited
at this year’s EcoBuild, Europe’s
biggest event for eco-friendly architects,
builders and developers.
“The benefits of wood burning
stoves are now centre-stage for
green-aware designers and developers
who have realised that not
only do stoves present a visually
attractive and practical proposition
that people love but that wood
fuel also comes with impeccable
environmental credentials, being
both sustainable and carbon neutral,”
says Russell. The Stove
Yard’s new showroom, based in
Holmes Chapel Business Park is
one of the biggest specialist wood
burning and multi fuel stove showrooms
in the country with over 100
stoves on display from top manufactures
including Morsø, Dan
Skan, Dunsley and Stovax.
“Our portfolio of stoves offers
something for everybody from traditional
cast iron wood burners at just
£409 right through to stunning precision
engineered contemporary
models which run automatically and
are almost works of art, starting at
£2000. At our open weekend on 27 –
29 April you’ll be able to save even
more money on our normal discounted
prices, plus we’ll be showing
the new state-of-the-art Nuro 160
heat storage stoves from Dan Skan,
hot from EcoBuild,” says Russell.
Kay is living proof of
the benefits of Muay
IF you want living proof
that at 51 years you can
still look great feel fit
and healthy and still do
the things that you want
to do in life, then take a
leaf out of Kay’s book.
She has been training in
Muay Thai-Thai Boxing
for 30 years.
Starting in her 20’s having
no knowledge of martial
art she wanted to find a
sport that was challenging
and fun but would also
build her confidence.
Introduced to Thai Boxing
and the world famous
Grand Master Sken she has
never looked back
She now runs the successful
Muay Thai-Thai Boxing
& Cross Training gym in
Stockport with her now
husband Grand Master
Sken.
Teaching for over 23 year
she passes her knowledge of
the sport on to women of all
ages who want to train for
fitness in the art of Muay
Thai.
Contrary to belief you
don’t have to be super fit
and look and train like a
man to participate in Thai
Boxin. It can be quite a surprise
when people see a
trainer like Kay who is a
feminine 5ft 5 female gracefully
showing all the different
techniques, expressing
a good degree skill and
understanding of what
Muay Thai is all about.
Having taught many people
she knows exactly how
important it is for women to
feel comfortable in what
they are doing and to be
able to achieve a training
routine that will fulfil all
the requirements wanted in
a workout.
Kay is very clear as to
why Muay Thai -Thai Boxing
works as a training routine.
“Many of my students say
that loosing weight and
looking great is often the
Advertorial
main reason that they start
going to the gym. However,
in my experience this does
not always mean that they
will stick to what they are
doing and achieve their
intended goals. I strongly
believe that if you really
want to get result you need
a trainer who really cares
about what you want to
achieve and who will give
you a disciplined routine
with that extra push and
motivation.
“Being encouraged to go
that bit further along side a
really interesting programme
that builds self
confidence and mental discipline
keeps you engaged
and focused for the full
hours training making sure
that you will want to keep
coming back for more”.
Kay makes sure that her
classes are taken in a
relaxed informal friendly
environment holding sessions
Tuesdays 6 pm and
Saturday 11 am. Free introductions
are available and
private lessons can be
booked in advance.
If you want to get results
and would like to talk to
Kay about what she can do
for you Please call 0161 429
9660. Or e mail kay@mastersken.com
Honours
for young
YOUNG people from Stockport
celebrated receiving The Duke of
Edinburgh’s Award at a presentation
evening at the Town Hall.
120 young people from Schools, Colleges,
the Open DofE Centre and voluntary
sector organisations received
Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards.
The presentation event was presided
over by the Mayor of Stockport, Councillor
Les Jones. The awards were presented
by Martin Heald a member of
the Great Britain Amputee Football
Team. Several of those receiving their
Awards also entertained the audience
with music and dance.
To gain a Duke of Edinburgh’s
Award, young people need to reach the
required standard in four sections: volunteering
(any activity that helps others),
skill (such as playing a musical
instrument), physical recreation (such
as Judo), a multi-day expedition, and
at Gold level a five day residential project.
Councillor Stuart Bodsworth, Stockport
Council’s Executive Member for
Children & Young People, said: “I
would like to congratulate all the
young people from Stockport on their
fantastic achievements in gaining
these awards. To have so many people
from Stockport gain these awards is
very impressive. I would encourage
young people who are interested in
participating to contact the Council to
find out more about The Duke of Edinburgh’s
Award.”
GANNON BRINGS IN
THREE NEW FACES
RADIO MADE IN
STOCKPORT
www.pureradio.org.uk
IN a bid to freshen up
the end of season at
Edgeley Park Jim Gannon
has brought in three
new players, with two
moving on.
Lancaster City’s leading
scorer Danny Hattersley,
Sunderland goalkeeper
Lewis King and Telford
defender Sean Newton
have all joined the Hatters
whilst Martin Gritton and
Sean McConville have both
departed.
Hattersley has represented
England at ‘college’
level and comes from the
same Myerscough College
‘academy’ set up that the
Hatters signed Anthony
Pilkington from, and is due
to complete his full time
studies at Myerscough in
the summer.
The 19 year old 6’ 3” forward,
who has notched 23
goals in all competitions this
season for the ‘dolly blues’,
has signed a short term contract
with the Hatters who,
out of respect for the part
that Myerscough College
and Lancaster City FC have
played in the development of
the player, have agreed an
undisclosed financial package
with both parties.
County Director John
Fitzpatrick has generously
agreed on behalf of Help the
Hatters to provide the club
with the finances to secure
the signing of this exciting
young player.
Gannon said: “I am keen
to accelerate the rebuilding
process at the club by bringing
in young dynamic players,
and with the departure
of Martin Gritton in mind, it
makes good sense to bring in
one such player in Danny.”
King has joined on loan
until the end of the season,
initially as cover for the suspended
Ian Ormson with
defender Sean Newton also
joining on loan until the end
of the season from AFC
Telford United.
Newton has made more
than 30 appearances for the
Bucks this season, and has
been Telford’s regular
penalty taker, indeed he
scored from the spot against
County back in September
in a 1-1 draw.
The Liverpool-born leftback
began his career with
Chester City, and had spells
SEASON TICKET
INCENTIVE
COUNTY have launched
a superb season ticket
initiative for the 2012/13
campaign.
With Adult season tickets
costing £100 +vat (£120) and
under 16's season tickets £50
+vat (£60) the club are looking
for the town's football
supporters to get wave the
Your Town Your Team banner
and get behind Jim Gannon
as he looks to get the
Hatters back in the Football
League.
With season ticket prices
set so low the club are hoping
to attract over 5,500 season
ticket holders for the forthcoming
campaign. And by
boasting one of the largest
home followings outside of
the Football League, Edgeley
Park will once again become
a fearsome place for visiting
teams to play at.
Added to the cut price offer
for seats the club have also
put together a selection of
impressive offers for 'corporate'
season tickets with
packages that include a
Directors Box Season Ticket
at £895 + VAT, an Executive
Box Season Ticket at £795 +
VAT and a Hospitality season
ticket at £690 + VAT.
All of the 'corporate' offers
include 3 course meals, seats
and programmes at every
home league game plus bar
access pre and post match.
County Director Spencer
Fearn, speaking about the
fantastic offer, said: “We are
offering some amazing season
ticket deals for the 12/13
campaign. For us to offer
these deals we need to raise
£550,000 + VAT, so £660,000,
which is the same amount as
what we have generated this
season”.
“The deal of £120 for an
adult and £60 for under 16’s
works out at £5.21 and
£2.60 for each game. So a
family of four (2 adults and
2 kids) can watch County for
£15.62 per game next season,
which I am sure you
will agree is fantastic value.
This offer applies to league
games only”.
“The offer expires on 10th
May. If we do not reach our
target we revert back to the
normal season ticket prices.
We have set up this system
where we take details in
advance so that we do not put
the club at any form of financial
risk. If we launched this
and only sold £300,000 of
tickets, this would of course
leave a big hole financially.
So it is better for us to see the
actual demand first before
we move forward with it”.
Full details of all of next
seasons ticket offers are
available on the club website
on loan at Southport and
Droylsden. After a brief spell
with Droylsden he joined
Telford in 2009, and has
made over 100 appearances
for the Bucks, and has also
appeared for the England C
side.
Gritton has left the club
by ‘mutual consent’ with
McConville joining Rochdale
on loan until the end of
the season.
Danny H attersley has joined County from Lancaster City
