Cold, wind and heavy rain<br />

could not dampen the warm<br />

happy atmosphere at the<br />

welcoming ceremony for<br />

the arrival <strong>of</strong> the second <strong>of</strong><br />

three <strong>of</strong> the SA Navy's<br />

newly acquired submarines,<br />

viz the SAS CHARLOTTE<br />

MAXEKE (S102) in Simon's Town on<br />

26 April 2007.<br />

Escorted by a Navy tug, SAS<br />

CHARLOTTE MAXEKE was welcomed<br />

in the harbour with traditional<br />

pomp ceremony and a 19-gun<br />

salute, which was fired by the SAS<br />

AMATOLA.<br />

SAS CHARLOTTE MAXEKE is<br />

one <strong>of</strong> the latest versions <strong>of</strong> the conventional<br />

type 209 Class submarines<br />

acquired as part <strong>of</strong> the Strategic<br />

<strong>Defence</strong> Package from Germany.<br />

christened S102 on 4 May 2005 and<br />

named SAS CHARLOTTE MAXEKE<br />

by Mrs Mittah Seperepere on 14 May<br />

2007 after a teacher, missionary and<br />

social activist, Charlotte Maxeke.<br />

Addressing a crowd <strong>of</strong> more than<br />

500 guests and families <strong>of</strong> the crew<br />

members, the Minister <strong>of</strong> <strong>Defence</strong>, Mr<br />

Mosiuoa Lekota, stated that the arrival<br />

<strong>of</strong> the SAS CHARLOTTE MAXEKE<br />

was the realisation <strong>of</strong> a milestone in<br />

the process <strong>of</strong> re-equipping the<br />

SANDF. Mr Lekota said: "SAS CHAR-<br />

LOTTE MAXEKE and her sister submarines,<br />

SAS MANTHASI and SAS<br />

QUEEN MODJADJI will bring the<br />

region and the African continent a significant<br />

strategic deterrent capability.<br />

The submarines together with the<br />

recently acquired MEKO Class<br />

frigates will considerably strengthen<br />

the ability <strong>of</strong> the SA Navy to provide a<br />

maritime <strong>Defence</strong>. Furthermore, these<br />

vessels will contribute to our regional<br />

reach and the provision <strong>of</strong> security in<br />

the Southern African Development<br />

in the consolidation <strong>of</strong> democracy<br />

Mr Lekota emphasised the<br />

Government's commitment to the<br />

region and to the continent.<br />

He said: "Our South-<br />

South co-operation will<br />

result in an increasing<br />

number <strong>of</strong> obligations on<br />

the part <strong>of</strong> our sea, air and<br />

land forces. This will<br />

result in a higher demand<br />

for loyal, dedicated and<br />

competent people who are<br />

prepared to deploy for<br />

extended periods and<br />

who have visionary and<br />

committed leadership. In<br />

this context the development<br />

<strong>of</strong> technological<br />

expertise and the retention<br />

<strong>of</strong> scarce skills are not<br />

only important, but fundamental<br />
