Dear Parents,
T
here
are some exciting activities going on
throughout the school that will be coming
to fruition as we move through the
remainder of the school year. Most obvious is the
structure that is rising above the current theater.
The new Creative Arts Center is moving forward
quickly and will be completed by the start of the
next school year. This facility is the culmination
of a significant planning process that involved all
members of the school community from the
board, administration, art faculty, to parents and
students who were involved in the master
planning process that took place four years ago.
This facility will provide a well thought-out
teaching area for the arts, a space that will house
all students and faculty for assemblies and special
activities, and a venue for special events for both
the school and the upcountry community. There
is still much to accomplish, but when it is
completed, we will be blessed with an amazing
facility.
There are also some significant changes being
made to the current May Day program. Although
it has been a traditional event, it has always been
difficult finding time to prepare for the
performance and create a day-long program that
reflects the mission of the school. With the
addition of Kumu Napua Makua as our instructor
of Hawaiian Studies and Language, we have
created a committee to review and redesign the
curriculum so it truly reflects its purpose: to
provide an education experience that allows
young people to better understand and appreciate
the gifts that we receive from the our Hawaiian
culture. Kumu Napua has solicited the assistance
of several kumu throughout the Maui community
to join her in working with the individual classes.
The focus of the event will be on a quality
experience for the students that provides a
meaningful presentation for our guests and for the
entire Seabury Hall community. The “May Day
Court” will no longer be part of the event,
because it truly does not reflect the Hawaiian
culture but will include hula, chant, and song.
The event will take place on Friday, April 28,
from 9:30 until 11:00 am. Students will then
feast on an authentic Hawaiian meal (we would
love to invite families, but we are not able serve
that many people). During the afternoon, students
will be treated to a concert by a well-known
Hawaiian musical group. School will end at the
normal time.
We are pleased with the increased number of
academic extra-curricular activities that are taking
place on campus. These activities are bringing
notoriety to the school by providing opportunities
for students to demonstrate their expertise in a
variety of academic areas. The Upper School
Math Team and Middle School Mathcounts
program, led by Middle School instructor Steve
Verno have been busy preparing for competitions.
The Middle School MathCounts team recently
(Continued on page 2)

(Continued from page 1)
won the Maui County tournament. The Upper School Science
department had several students to qualify to participate in the
International Science Fair on the mainland in the summer.
Students were also involved in the Ching Foundation’s “Inspired
in Hawaii” contest and won the statewide grand prize for a video
they produced. Students in both the Middle and Upper Schools
are also involved in a new program with PBS and will be
creating news and special interest stories that will be aired. We
are also looking at expanding our Robotics program into the
Upper School and are busy designing it in such a way that it is
offered through an elective class next year.
These types of activities are in line with 21 st century learning
skills because they provide a project-based venue and place
student in an experiential setting that requires them to participate
in a dynamic environment. We will continue developing these
types of programs in all disciplines within the school.
Paddling, Girls Paddling, Girls Soccer, and Boys Soccer. The
Boys’ Swim Team finished second in the MIL and was the top
Maui team at the State Championships finishing fourth. Renny
Richmond was a two event state champion. Also, sophomore
sensation runner, Dakota Grossman was named runner of the
year for the second straight year.
So, as we move through the remainder of the school year, we are
looking forward to celebrating the students’ successes in all
endeavors in which they participate. We are all very proud of
this fine school and its accomplishments. We pledge to never
become complacent and to ensure that we provide the finest
education possible for our students’ preparation for college and
for life.
Joseph J. Schmidt
Headmaster
Finally, we would like to congratulate the Athletic Department
for an outstanding winter season. Seabury Hall won the MIL
championship in Boys Basketball, Girls Basketball, Mixed
Students Are the Best
in Maui
The Seabury Hall Middle School math
team won the 2012 Maui County
MathCounts competition in early
February. Over 70 students from nine
Maui County middle schools competed for
the championship. The four students who
represented Seabury Hall for the team
score were eighth grader Bjorn Nelson,
seventh grader Jesse Doan, sixth graders
Shelby Ferrier and Melia Fong. Sixth
graders Nick Endo, Townsend Roland
and Darby Mulligan also performed at
the event. Jesse Doan took first place
individual honors as well as first place in
the Countdown Round, a game show style
head to head single elimination
competition. This is the third straight year
that Seabury Hall has won this prestigious
event.
This year’s math team also benefited
greatly from the wisdom and experience of
assistant coach Jasmine Doan, a ninth
grade Seabury Hall student and Middle
School alumni who has established herself
as one of the top math students in the
entire state. As Maui County champions
the team has earned the right to represent
Maui at the Hawaii State MathCounts
Championship on Oahu.
Grade
Reports
and
Signups
In the Upper School, as we approach
Spring Break, two very important
timetables are close to concluding. The
first, of course, is the third quarter, which
ends on March 8, the final day of school
before the break. Coinciding with the end
of the third quarter is the conclusion of the
sign-up process for next year's courses.
In the three weeks between Winterim and
Spring Break students work closely with
their advisors and grade-level deans to
complete their four-year plans and course
sign-up sheets for next year. Prior to the
break, your child should bring
home a completed course signup
sheet. Please take a
moment to compare your
child's current performance
with the offerings and
descriptions for courses
available in the fall. It is
important that we all work
together to create a schedule
that is appropriate for your
child's abilities and future
aspirations. Once you have reviewed your
child's course selections for the next
academic year, please sign the form and
have your student return it to his/her
advisor prior to Spring Break.
Planning for the future should be exciting.
It is a wonderful venue to discuss future
goals, likes and dislikes, and may be a
wonderful catalyst for those of you
embarking on college searches. In
addition, the process will hopefully remind
students of the importance of working
until the end of the year.
The beginning of the
fourth quarter is a
wonderful opportunity
to process teacher's
comments and apply
suggestions so that one
may end the semester
on a high note. With a
strong fourth quarter
students can
significantly improve their semester
averages. Students should seek out their
instructor's counsel on methods for
improving as well as advice for the best
methods of preparation for final exams or
year-end assessments.
Prom
Although the Seabury Hall Prom is still
over a month away on April 14, tickets
will be going on sale during the week
before Spring Break. The Prom is open to
all 10 th , 11 th , and 12 th graders, who are
welcome to invite guests. Prior to the
break, tickets will be $65, but the price
will go up ten dollars after the vacation.
Specific details will be provided closer to
the event.
Also please take a moment or two over the
Spring Break to appreciate being a
family. Often times our schedules lead us
in different directions and it is important
Tour de Trash
by Laura Mayron
In January the members of the AP Biology, AP
Environmental Science, Engineering, and
Environmental Biology classes got a look at
what happens to Maui’s trash during Maui
County’s “Tour de Trash..” Presented by the
Department of Environmental Management’s
Solid Waste Division, the Tour de Trash seeks
to show Maui’s students just what happens to
their waste—be it garbage, recyclables,
compost, and metals—and what they can do
to help keep Maui clean.
The first stop was the Central Maui landfill and
Maui Eco Systems compost section. One of
the highlights was a presentation by Pacific
Biodiesel, the first commercial biodiesel
business in the United States. Vice President
Kelly King spoke to students on the production
of various types of biodiesel and told them
how they could become involved.
Students were then taken to Hammerhead
Metals, a scrap metal facility that processes
metals from both the public and commercial
businesses. Students watched a derelict car
being crushed into a compact cube of twisted
metal and glass.
The tour continued on to Maui Disposal
Company to see bales of compacted paper,
glass, and aluminum, and hear how it is
shipped abroad and to the mainland. The tour
finished up at Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore,
that sells donated residential construction and
remodeling materials and also recycles
electronics.
Athletes of
the Month
If your child is a
member of a spring
team (Baseball, Boys
We were very excited to recognize two
young ladies who have been in the
basketball program for four years. This
year they overcame all obstacles to win the
MIL championship. Megan O’Malley
and Anna Rodgers have attended many
summer and off season camps to hone
their skills for their last year of high school
basketball. Their efforts paid dividends as
the team finished first in the MIL.
Volleyball, Golf, Softball,
Tennis or Track and Field)
please check with your
coach and find out when
practices, matches or games
are, so your child will be
second, and the basketball and soccer
teams won both of their league
championships.
In all, the winter sports competed in nine
different leagues and came away with 6
team championships. We’re very
fortunate to have such
wonderful youngsters
representing Seabury Hall.
A major reason for our success
was the support of the families
of all our athletes. Thank you
to all of you who supported
your child, or favorite team
this past winter.
We recognized three boys who contributed
mightily to the swim team this year. All
three scored points in the MIL where the
team finished second in the MIL. Alex
Armstrong has swum for four years.
Tristan Loesberg has been on the team
for three years while Cole Drake was able
to compete for the first time this year.
They have been tremendous models for the
younger swimmers this season.
Spring Break
Spring Break is always a difficult time for
our spring sports teams. Families go on
vacation or it is difficult for the younger
athletes to find transportation to practice.
Page 6
able to meet all of his/her commitments.
Great Winter
While many parts of the country were
under snow, or in a very cold space this
winter, our athletic teams were extremely
hot. The paddling teams began the assault
as both the girls and the mixed teams took
the MIL title. Not to be outdone, the
soccer teams both won their respective
league championships. The swim teams
both had outstanding efforts to finish

College Counseling News by Nancy Ulin
Juniors
Don’t forget to sign up for the SAT
Subject Tests if you are taking them
(formerly known as the SAT II’s)! The
May 5 test is ideal for taking any SAT
Subject Test as you will be taking AP
exams around the same time. Register for
the May 7 test by April 6th. Go to
www.collegeboard.com and log into your
account.
Don’t forget to sign up for the ACT April
14 exam (with writing) by March 9! Go
to www.act.org. We are not doing this in
class – you are expected to sign up on your
own.
I have scheduled family conferences with
the juniors and their parents. Please
remember, I need to have the Brag Letter
back by March 9.
