demo
with these fine organizations!
The Foundation is proud of the strong
partnerships it has developed with nonprofit
organizations in this region. To-date, 60 nonprofits
have participated in Impact Foundation’s Institute for
Innovation and Effectiveness (Institute) fundraising
training, made possible by support from DMF.
Additionally, 32 nonprofits have completed a formal
strategic planning process funded through DMF
grants to the Institute.
In the Institute fundraising training, nonprofits are
learning how to secure major individual donor gifts
to support their mission over the long term. In 2005,
DMF commissioned a study of North Dakota’s
wealth transfer which revealed that from 2001-2055,
North Dakota households will make total charitable
contributions of $67.2 billion. Alarmingly, over this
same time frame, North Dakotans are also projected
to transfer $55 billion to the federal government in
the form of estate taxes. With the help of Institute
training, nonprofits in our region are now positioning
themselves to assist donors and their advisors in
making a greater societal impact through more tax
efficient, effective charitable planning.
The overall impact of the fundraising and strategic
planning programs will take several years to fully
measure, but organizations are already starting to
build a solid base of committed donors and new
major gifts that will sustain their mission for many
years to come.
In July 2007, Impact Foundation launched the
GiveBack website, www.impactgiveback.org, a project
funded by DMF to connect donors of time, talent and
treasure to high-performing nonprofit organizations.
Through the website, donors can learn about nonprofit
organizations in our region, make online
donations and explore volunteer opportunities that
match their charitable interests. Our goal over the
next year is to have 100% of DMF’s 300 nonprofit
grant partners listed on the GiveBack website, as well
as about 1,500 other regional nonprofit organizations.
Significant marketing of the website is also planned
for 2008, including individual campaigns implemented
by each nonprofit partner.
Another tool that leverages our nonprofit partners’
ability to raise funds is the DMF Match Grant
Program. In fiscal year 2007, DMF invested $1.1
million in 23 of our nonprofit partners through the
match initiative. The match program provides
nonprofits with the leverage they need to “kick-start”
their fundraising programs and further develop a
committed base of donors.
The sound adage of “teaching people to fish” is being
successfully demonstrated by our nonprofit partners
who will continue to provide valuable health services
to our communities for the long term. We are proud
to partner with these fine organizations!
THE COURAGE OF AN “ANGEL”
What happens when you’re 28 years old
and you hear the diagnosis…“it’s cancer”? If you
are Carly Nelson, you start dreaming about how
you can help others who are experiencing a similar
health challenge.
At age 18, Carly began struggling with a series of
health issues and was eventually diagnosed with
lupus. Several years later, she faced a cancer diagnosis.
That diagnosis transformed Carly, now 33 and a
two-time cancer survivor, into a woman on a mission!
Her mission is to build a retreat center, Angels of
Courage Retreats, where people facing terminal
illness, chronic disease or other life challenges can
seek peace, guidance and support. Carly has been
blessed with the help of another cancer survivor,
Don Goering, who has donated 11 acres of beautiful
land in the Cormorant Lakes area to be used as the
building site for the center.
A friend’s referral led Carly to DMF and the
Impact Foundation. Last spring, DMF funded and
coordinated the establishment of the organization’s
501(c)(3) status and provided strategic planning and
fundraising training consulting services to ensure
a solid start for the organization. In addition,
$100,000 in DMF match funds are leveraging their
fundraising efforts.
DMF’s support motivated Carly to devote more of
her time to developing the retreat center. Carly’s
employer, Microsoft, supported her efforts by
enabling her to move to a four-day work week and
dedicate the remaining day to Angels of Courage.
At Microsoft’s worldwide Woman’s Leadership and
Development Conference this past fall, Carly was one
of the top three nominees for the Community Service
award which recognizes a woman who has dedicated
time and energy toward improving her community
and has made a significant contribution to the quality
of the community through such actions.
A successful August 2007 fundraising event raised
$67,000 for Angels of Courage Retreats. As a result,
last fall they held their first retreat for adult cancer
survivors at Fair Hills Resort in rural Detroit Lakes,
MN. They are planning a second retreat in spring ‘08.
They are currently seeking financial resources to hire
a full-time coordinator to further develop the
organization.
Although Carly is a humble person who tends
to deflect the spotlight away from herself, we believe
she is a true “angel of courage” who is embarking
on a tremendous journey that will help people better
cope with the life-threatening health challenges they
are facing. We are proud to be her partner!
To learn more about the Angels of Courage Retreats
and how you can help, contact Carly Nelson at
contact@angelsofcourage.org or at 701-371-3025.
Match donation checks of $100 or more may be
written to DMF and sent to Angels of Courage
Retreats, P.O. Box 512, West Fargo, ND 58078.
THE FULL CIRCLE OF HOPE
In 2001, DMF received an emotion-filled,
heartfelt thank-you note from grateful parent, Adair
Grommesh, whose 11-month old son, Garrett, had
just participated in the Hope, Inc. Magic Mobility
Camp sponsored by DMF. “Thank you, DMF, for
letting my son experience ‘walking’ for the first time”,
the note said – with a picture of an adorable smiling
little boy trialing a piece of mobility equipment.
Garrett was born with spina bifida. The Camp
provides assessment and mobility equipment trials
for up to 50 children with physical disabilities each
summer. Access to mobility equipment helps the
children improve their circulation and muscle
development, decrease leg contractures, improve
digestion and heart and lung function and increase
self-esteem and socialization skills.
An amazing result of that initial experience is that,
in 2006, the grateful mom became Hope, Inc.’s
executive director! Adair tells “the rest of the story”:
“In June 2001, our world was permanently
changed for the positive! We were invited by
Garrett’s therapist to attend a mobility camp in
Moorhead. At this camp, a whole new world was
opened to Garrett through the trial of various
mobility equipment that enabled him to stand
and move around on his own. If not for DMF’s
support, this camp may not have existed.
When invited to serve as Hope, Inc.’s executive
director, I felt confident that my enthusiasm,
passion and actual life experiences could enable
Hope, Inc. to do even more. Children with
disabilities need more than just one week to
socialize with other children experiencing similar
issues. So, with the help of others, we started a
weekly sports and monthly recreational program
to allow the kids to be a part of a team and
experience the social interaction and recreation
that able-bodied children enjoy.”
Garrett is now seven years old and has experienced
13 surgeries. He maneuvers his wheelchair like a
Nascar driver on the track! His positive attitude and
radiant smile brighten the days of everyone who
comes in contact with him. The boundaries of his
potential are not a part of his mind or body, but
rather that of society.
“Throughout the years, DMF has helped our
organization with grants and trainings. But
most importantly, the DMF staff and board
believe in what our organization stands for
and the potential it has to impact the lives of so
many. On behalf of all of the children we serve,
thank you DMF for your support! You have
allowed our family to come ‘full circle’ and
made dreams come true for so many!”
To learn more about Hope, Inc. and how you can help,
contact Adair Grommesh at adair@hopeinconline.com,
agrommesh@cableone.net or at 701-866-9002. Match
donation checks of $50 or more may be written to
DMF and sent to Hope, Inc., 803 22nd Ave. So.,
ural health issue:
A 26-year old male is rushed
by ambulance to a local rural
hospital in the middle of the
night following a vehicle
rollover crash. The on-call
medical staff orders x-rays
to determine the extent of
possible head and neck
injuries, but… physician
diagnosis and medical
treatment are delayed due to
lack of an on-site radiologist.
The patient must be sent to a
larger healthcare facility over
an hour away in order to have
the x-rays read.
solution:
The extended wait for an x-ray
report has been eliminated
due to the placement of
computed radiography
equipment in the rural
healthcare facility.
ENSURING THE FUTURE OF RURAL HEALTHCARE
The scenario described on the opposite
page depicts the experience of First Care Health
Center in Park River, ND, a community of 1,400
people in Walsh County about 50 miles from Grand
Forks, ND. First Care Health Center was founded by
the Presentation Sisters 55 years ago. In 2005, they
launched a successful $7 million building and
renovation project which was completed in October
2007. They are positioning themselves to continue to
provide access to high quality healthcare in their
rural region.
To keep pace with rapidly changing healthcare
technology, installation of computed radiography
equipment was critical. First Care Health Center
applied for and received a $20,000 DMF match grant
for the equipment. With additional funding from
Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota’s rural
technology grant program, in July 2007 they
purchased and installed the equipment. This
equipment allows x-rays to be taken on-site,
digitized, and sent via a T-line to an off-site
radiologist. A diagnosis is returned within an
hour, or within 15 minutes in an emergency.
DMF’s match grant encouraged well over 100 local
donors to support the project by matching their
donations, dollar-for-dollar. Not only did this address
the Health Center’s immediate technology needs, the
fundraising effort has galvanized a solid base of
donors who will help sustain the organization for the
long term.
To learn more about First Care Health Center and
how you can help, contact Louise Dryburgh, CEO, at
louise.dryburgh@1stcarehc.com or 701-284-7500 or
see www.firstcarehc.com. Match donation checks of
$100 or more may be written to DMF and sent to
First Care Health Center, 115 Vivian St., Park River,
ND 58270.
Access to computed radiography not only improves
patient outcomes, but decreases the need for
volunteer ambulance crews to transport patients to
larger hospitals for emergency x-ray readings.
Frustration of patients, physicians and staff due to
delayed x-ray reports has been eliminated, as well as
the cost of film, postage and staff time to package and
file x-ray films
DMF Donor Advised Funds
Donor Advised Funds allow the donor to
establish a fund or account at the Foundation
and recommend grants from their fund
to qualified charitable organizations. The
recommendations are non-binding; however,
the Foundation gives each recommendation
full consideration, provided that the
suggested recipient is eligible to receive
such a grant. The Foundation oversees
administration of the fund, allowing the
donor to focus on designing and implementing
a charitable strategy that will produce a
more substantial societal impact. A Donor
Advised Fund can be established with a taxdeductible,
irrevocable contribution of
$10,000 or more. At this time, it is the
Foundation’s practice not to charge expenses
to administer these types of funds other than
the direct costs of external investment
management services.
These funds support programs and initiatives
designed to make a significant impact in
improving health and access to healthcare
services within DMF’s service area.
health-related fields. These funds are often
established in memory or in honor of an
individual to commemorate that person’s
life, achievements, or dedication to a
particular cause. The Foundation generally
works with institutions of higher education
to administer scholarship grant funds. The
donor may select institutions to administer
the scholarship grant funds as well as
develop criteria for the scholarship award.
DMF does not charge a fee to manage
these funds.
ANNUAL INVESTMENT MARKET REPORT
The Foundation’s cash and investment portfolio
increased its overall market value during the last
twelve months to $118,950,631 from $110,654,271
even with expenditures totaling $5,067,362. The
Foundation’s investment strategy has resulted in a
10.7% return for the year, up from the prior year’s
7.6%. On recommendations by our financial advisors,
the Foundation has implemented a Board-approved
target asset allocation during 2007 that reflects
a more long-term focus and diversification
commensurate with other similar foundations
and public institutional investors. The new target
allocation strategy of 55% equities, 35% fixed
income, and 10% alternative investments will allow
the portfolio to grow over the long-term taking
advantage of future market conditions to improve
the portfolio returns at acceptable risk levels. The
Foundation continues with a manager-of-managers
approach to the management of its investment
portfolio, as recommended by our financial advisors.
This strategy provides the DMF portfolio with a
broad diversification of multiple investment
managers, styles, and securities.
