ural health issue: A 26-year old male is rushed by ambulance to a local rural hospital in the middle of the night following a vehicle rollover crash. The on-call <strong>medical</strong> staff orders x-rays to determine the extent of possible head and neck injuries, but… physician diagnosis and <strong>medical</strong> treatment are delayed due to lack of an on-site radiologist. The patient must be sent to a larger healthcare facility over an hour away in order to have the x-rays read. solution: The extended wait for an x-ray report has been eliminated due to the placement of computed radiography equipment in the rural healthcare facility. -16-
ENSURING THE FUTURE OF RURAL HEALTHCARE The scenario described on the opposite page depicts the experience of First Care Health Center in Park River, ND, a community of 1,400 people in Walsh County about 50 miles from Grand Forks, ND. First Care Health Center was founded by the Presentation Sisters 55 years ago. In 2005, they launched a successful $7 million building and renovation project which was completed in October 2007. They are positioning themselves to continue to provide access to high quality healthcare in their rural region. To keep pace with rapidly changing healthcare technology, installation of computed radiography equipment was critical. First Care Health Center applied for and received a $20,000 DMF match grant for the equipment. With additional funding from Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota’s rural technology grant program, in July 2007 they purchased and installed the equipment. This equipment allows x-rays to be taken on-site, digitized, and sent via a T-line to an off-site radiologist. A diagnosis is returned within an hour, or within 15 minutes in an emergency. DMF’s match grant encouraged well over 100 local donors to support the project by matching their donations, dollar-for-dollar. Not only did this address the Health Center’s immediate technology needs, the fundraising effort has galvanized a solid base of donors who will help sustain the organization for the long term. Access to computed radiography not only improves patient outcomes, but decreases the need for volunteer ambulance crews to transport patients to larger hospitals for emergency x-ray readings. Frustration of patients, physicians and staff due to delayed x-ray reports has been eliminated, as well as the cost of film, postage and staff time to package and file x-ray films -17-
