us than He was, surely He would have spared His only begotten Son the<br />

infinite pain and anguish of dying the excruciating death on the cross.<br />

I trust that as we take a close look at the events that led up to our<br />

Lord’s death, we may gain a deeper appreciation of the mercies of God<br />

that Jesus revealed on the cross. And by appreciating the mercies of<br />

God, I trust that you may be deeply moved to “present your body a<br />

living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable<br />

service.”<br />

There are three wonderful things in the death of Jesus that must<br />

move you to consecrate your life to Him: The Shame of His<br />

Humiliation, The Greatness of His Love, and The Fulfillment of His<br />

Word.<br />

I. The Shame of His Humiliation<br />

The scene of the crucifixion begins in<br />

verse 17,<br />

And he bearing his cross went forth<br />

into a place called the place of a skull,<br />

which is called in the Hebrew<br />

Golgotha: Where they crucified him,<br />

and two other with him, on either side<br />

one, and Jesus in the midst. And Pilate<br />

wrote a title, and put it on the cross.<br />

And the writing was, JESUS OF<br />

NAZARETH THE KING OF THE<br />

JEWS.<br />

There is a very interesting but<br />

meaningful irony here. The title that was<br />

written on the placard attached to the cross<br />

above Jesus described Him as “The King<br />

of the Jews” and yet there He was, most<br />

unlike any king, not seated on a throne of<br />

glory, not dressed in royal robes, not being<br />

honoured and respected by crowds of<br />
