that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake
shall find it.”
These are very serious and sobering words to anyone. We cannot
take them lightly. Matters involving life and death are always of utmost
importance. To most people who live in this world today, thinking about
losing one’s life brings the greatest fear. What is it like to die? How
does it feel to breathe your last breath, and to close your eyes for the last
time? Death is one of the greatest causes for fear in this world. The fear
of losing one’s life is one of the greatest driving forces in life. And for
this reason, people will usually do anything to avoid death, or to
postpone it as far as they possibly can. Because life is precious, millions
of dollars are often spent on medicine, health care and nutritious food to
preserve life and prevent death.
And yet for you as a Christian, all of these considerations have to
be balanced against what your consecration demands. You must be
willing even to lose your life for the sake of the Lord. Now this does not
mean that you should purposely seek to have yourself killed. What it
means is that as you live out your Christian commitment in the place
where God has placed you, you must be willing to give anything to do
God’s will. And if it does comes to the point where you have no other
choice but death, in order to do the will of God, then so be it.
Now, our Lord knows that this is not an easy thing at all for us to
do. And that is why the Scriptures give so much encouragement to us to
help us to cope with situations like that. Let us turn to Revelation 12:9–
11,
And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the
Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was
cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come
salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the
power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast
down, which accused them before our God day and night. And
they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word
of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the
death.
