might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among<br />

them, and for my vesture they did cast lots.<br />

Here we see the soldiers tearing up and gambling for the only<br />

personal possessions He had left in this world. How can anyone treat the<br />

possessions of a king in such a terrible way?<br />

Let us try our best to imagine this scene as vividly as our minds can<br />

imagine, based on our passage in the Gospel of John. And to make the<br />

scene even more vivid, let us also add what the other Gospel writers<br />

describe about this same event. According to Matthew 27:39–44,<br />

And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads, And<br />

saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three<br />

days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from<br />

the cross. Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with<br />

the scribes and elders, said, He saved others; himself he cannot<br />

save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from<br />

the cross, and we will believe him. He trusted in God; let him<br />

deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son<br />

of God. The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast<br />

the same in his teeth.<br />

According to the Gospel of Luke, even the soldiers joined in to<br />

mock Him, saying, “If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself”<br />

(23:37). There seemed to be no one who did not have an unkind word to<br />

hurl at Him as He hung helplessly on the cross. The whole world was<br />

represented at the cross reviling and<br />

crucifying the Lord. But all of these<br />

verbal abuses that Jesus endured for<br />

six hours was nothing compared to<br />

the extreme anguish He experienced<br />

of being abandoned by the One who<br />

was dearest to Him: God the Father<br />

Himself. Both Matthew and Mark<br />

record that after those six hours<br />

when His sufferings reached the<br />

highest point and became most<br />

unbearable, Jesus shouted from the<br />
