What is the Waste-Free Lunch Challenge?

COMPLETING THE CHALLENGE
During the Waste-Free Lunch Challenge week, your classroom or
school will try to go waste-free for the entire week. Please note
that conducting two waste audits (1 before the challenge and 1
during the challenge) are the only compulsory activities for
classrooms/schools entering the Challenge. As a result, schools
can either plan the date for the second waste audit or make it a
surprise. Students try to go waste-free all week long.
Classrooms or schools can conduct visual scans to engage
students in the monitoring process. To conduct a visual scan,
simply layout all bags of material, ask your students to observe
and assess their contents. On the day of your “waste-free”

found on page 38 (classroom audit) and page 40 (school audit). As with the normal day audit, you may
want to take photos of your students.
Optional - You may also like to hold your own in-school contest to see which classroom generates the
least amount of garbage or which class had the most students participating. A student certificate is
available on page 55.

Analyzing the results
As part of the competition, complete the waste audit on a normal day and then each day during the week-long
Challenge. To analyze results:
1. Download the Waste Audit Worksheet Tool from the Teachers Resources page of the WFLC website.
2. Enter your results into the appropriate sheets and follow the detailed instruction on page 43.
