Attachment 13: Fun activities to go with a waste audit Track your garbage - optional Create a map or diagram with students of what happens to the items in their lunch that they recycle, compost or if throw it away as garbage. This can be used as the basis for a discussion on the environmental impacts of waste disposal and local issues around landfills or recycling facilities. Pledge your commitment - optional Have students fill out a personal pledge to bring a waste-free lunch and attach the pledges to a large drawing of a lunch box or waste-free lunch poster prominently displayed in the classroom. Remind students the day before to make sure they bring a waste-free lunch and that you will be measuring all of the waste produced after lunch that day. Tote-your-own-trash - optional Students and staff attach a plastic bag to their belt for the day. All their recycling or garbage (with the exception of bathroom waste) goes in the bag; students do a personal audit at the day’s end and formulate a plan to reduce or reuse personal garbage. 42
Attachment 14: Waste Audit Tool (EXCEL version available online) The Waste Audit Tool will help to calculate your waste reduction results. The Excel tool is available for download online. Once you download the tool, you will see that there are four tabs. The first tab is called “Live Audit Tool”. This is where you would enter your results, and the tool will calculate the amount of waste you diverted from landfill and your annualized results. Please note that you can only enter information into cells that are associated with waste audit results and your classroom information. The rest of the tool is locked. The second tab is labelled “Sample Version”. This provides an overview of a complete form. The third tab, labelled “Do the Calculations Yourself”, provides the necessary equations to calculate the results with your students. Each cell has a number attached to it (A, B, C).
