pH, ION AND CONDUCTIVITY METERS
Precision tools for everyday
856 Conductivity Module
High-end conductivity meter
Designed to connect with the latest, most
modern 5-ring cells, the 856 Conductivity
Module provides for a high linearity without
platinisation of the cell. This guarantees
highest precision, and the cell constant, once
determined, remains unchanged over a wide
measuring range. The 5-ring electrode can
be immersed completely into the beaker. So
beakers with different filling heights are no
problem and in stirred solutions a rapid mixing
within the cell can occur. Last but not least, the
cell is easy to clean owing to its removable cap.
Ion Analysis
THE WHOLE WORLD OF ION CHROMATOGRAPHY
Compact intelligence for ion chromatography
Metrohm ion chromatography
For over 25 years Metrohm has provided
optimal solutions in ion chromatography
thanks to its innovative and creative approach.
Built-in intelligence
The 850 Professional IC is the first professional
ion chromatography system with intelligent
system components.
The 850 Professional IC guarantees excellent
results, gapless system monitoring, complete
traceability of all actions and the simple
operation of even complex procedures.
UV-Vis detection
The 887 Professional UV-Vis Detector enables reliable and
accurate quantification of substances that absorb light in the
ultraviolet or visible range.
Broad area of use
The flow path of Metrohm’s IC instruments is completely
metal-free. Thus, not only the standard anions and cations,
but also transition metal ions and various organic substances
can be detected without any problem. Even in complex
matrices, e.g. biological samples, good detection limits can be
achieved on the basis of the specific absorption properties of
many analytes.
Amperometric detection
The 896 Amperometric Detector is designed for direct
current (DC), amperometric (PAD), highly flexible
integrated pulsed amperometric (flexIPAD)
or cyclic voltammetry (CV) modes.
Typical applications include the determination of inorganic
anions, such as cyanide, sulphide, nitrite, sulphite or iodide;
carbohydrates, such as mono-, di- and polysaccharides,
amino-sugars, sugar alcohols and sugar acids; and
organic compounds, such as phenols or vitamins.
SEPARATION COLUMNS
Surpassing standards
Ion Analysis
The first intelligent ion chromatography
column generation in the world
Insert and start
When a Metrosep separation column is used in different
systems, it conveys all its information to the next IC system.
This results in complete traceability and GLP surveillance for
all the columns used, even on different IC instruments. This
greatly facilitates system validation.
Column selection for
standard test methods
Meeting global standards in IC is now easy.
Metrohm columns are built and developed to meet compliance
requirements. Metrohm application chemists remain at the
forefront of science and research where
new simplified and enhanced methods
are being developed.
• All column data is immediately available.
• Active monitoring of all important column functions
• Complete traceability of all column parameters
Chemical and sequential suppression
Ion chromatographic analysis uses chemical and sequential
suppression to reduce background conductivity and increase
sensitivity. Chemical suppression improves the sensitivity
by a factor of 2 to 5.
Sequential suppression combines chemical suppression with
Metrohm CO2 Suppression (MCS). Carbonate and CO2 are
removed, eliminating the carbonate peak completely. Additionally,
sequential suppression improves detection limits and produces
a remarkably smaller injection peak, which in turn improves the
determination of the fast-eluting ions such as fluoride.
Ion Analysis
TRACE ANALYSIS WITH VOLTAMMETRY
The versatile all-rounder for research, teaching and industry
797 VA Computrace
Analysis of heavy metals: total concentration…
For specific applications where the cost of AAS or
ICP is prohibitive, voltammetry can accomplish metal
analysis with equivalent or even higher sensitivities.
Only small quantities of reagents and pure pure
nitrogen are required.
…and speciation!
With voltammetry it is also possible to differentiate
between varying oxidation states of metal ions,
or between free and bound metal species. This
information can be used to assess biological availability
and toxicity of heavy metals, making voltammetry
an essential technique in environmental analysis.
High ion concentrations? No problem with VA!
Voltammetry is ideally suited for the analysis of:
• Water, waste water and sea water
• Salts and pure chemicals
• Electroplating baths
• Foodstuffs
Cyclic Voltammetry
Stripping (CVS)
Cyclic Voltammetry Stripping is
the most popular electrochemical
technique for determining
the concentrations of organic
additives in electroplating
baths.
Software supplied with the
797 VA Computrace implements
all the CVS methods
required for quantification of
suppressors, brighteners and
levellers in acid-copper and
other plating bath solutions.
STANDARDISED STABILITY MEASUREMENT
Easy and automatic
Oxidative stability of fats and oils
The determination of the oxidation stability of edible oils and
fats is the classical application for the 743 Rancimat. The
“induction time” that is measured characterises the resistance of
oils and fats to oxidation. The term Oil Stability Index (OSI) is also
commonly used.
The Rancimat method is incorporated in standards such as AOCS
Cd 12b-92 and ISO 6886. This technique replaces the previous,
complicated Active Oxygen Method.
Oxidation stability of edible oils at different
temperatures
The 743 Rancimat has an induction time vs temperature
extrapolation feature. This allows an estimation to be made of
the shelf-life of the oil or fat at various storage temperatures.
Oxidation stability is also an important quality criterion for
biodiesel and is required to be measured for blended fuels
containing biodiesel. With the Rancimat this determination can
be carried out simply and automatically.
MONITOR FOR AEROSOLS AND GASES IN AMBIENT AIR
Environmental surveillance
Process Analysis
MARGA for autonomous operation
With MARGA, gas and aerosol composition of ambient air can be
measured simultaneously and continuously.
The whole MARGA system runs autonomously, generating
aerosol and gas concentrations every hour, only requiring user
intervention once per week to supply new solutions.
The sensitivity of the ion chromatographs is sufficient to reach
detection limits below 0.1 μg/m 3 with an air sampling flow-rate
of 1 m 3 /h.
The MARGA is available with 1 or 2 sample boxes, the latter
allowing simultaneous sampling of two different aerosol sizes,
for example PM 2.5 and PM 10.
• Continuous monitoring with hourly results
• Results on the composition of gases and aerosols
• Remote access and data transfer
• One week unattended operation
• Smart software with security and validation levels
• Quality assurance of the measurement with internal standard ion
