<strong>Nailsworth</strong> <strong>Primary</strong> is an inner Adelaide school with a February enrolment of 506. The<br />

school population comprises 1.3% Aborignal and Torres Strait Island (ATSI), 4.7% of<br />

students have specific learning needs and 12% of students attract <strong>School</strong> Card support. The<br />

school celebrates a diverse culture. 40% of students are of non English speaking<br />

background or have English as their second language Families are able to access on onsite<br />

Out of <strong>School</strong> Hours and Vacation Care program.<br />

Children are keen to learn and are well supported by parents. Support is<br />

offered through an Early Intervention Program. The school has a<br />

program for gifted students - Extended Methodologies. An Early Bird<br />

Reading Room has been established to support literacy skills. A<br />

Reading Intervention Program for year 4/5 students is in place. Middle<br />

<strong>School</strong> groups are organised to support senior students.<br />

Student management<br />

Behaviour Management is a successful partnership between school and<br />

community. The emphasis is on rewards for positive behaviour. The<br />

community fully supports the <strong>School</strong> Dress Code Policy.<br />

Student government<br />

SRC is supported by a class meeting structure. Representatives from<br />

Years 3 - 7 form the SRC. They also buddy with junior primary classes to<br />

assist with learning SRC processes. SRC reports at fortnightly<br />

assemblies and in the fortnightly newsletters. It has influence in the<br />

school's decision making. SRC is proactive in supporting charities.<br />

4. Curriculum<br />

Subject offerings:<br />

All eight areas of the curriculum are offered, NIT is provided in LOTE<br />

(Greek and Italian), Drama, Resource Based Learning and Physical<br />

Education. Each student receives LOTE and PE from specialist staff.<br />

The Australian National Curriculum is being implemented in Science,<br />

English, History and Mathematics.<br />

Special Programmes: Mother Tongue (Greek and Italian); ESL; Musical<br />

school promotes the Premier's Reading Challenge and the Premier's Be Active<br />

9. <strong>School</strong> Facilities<br />

Buildings and grounds<br />

Two storey stone building (inclusive), of Computer Suite,<br />

Administration, LOTE Room, Art, The Learning Cubby and Learning Loft (learning<br />

support areas) are also in the main building.<br />

The new two storey building has the Resource Centre, three classes.<br />

Computer Suite and an Art and cooking area.<br />

There are 7 classes in outside single storey buildings.<br />

There is a multipurpose hall which includes canteen and a stage area, a grassed<br />

area and an Out of <strong>School</strong> Hours Care building adjacent to Prospect Art<br />

Gallery/Library.<br />

Heating and cooling<br />

All teaching spaces have air conditioning and heating.<br />

Combined Hall and Performing Arts.<br />

Student facilities<br />

The students use the school's grass, asphalt and paved areas effectively. There is a<br />

modern, playground, volleyball court and a number of shaded areas. Equipment is<br />

available for lunch time borrowing. Internet access is available in all teaching areas.<br />

Interactive white boards are available in all classrooms. Many additional activities are<br />

presented for children during the lunch time break.<br />

The school has a modern staff room and Administration area. Teacher preparation<br />

areas have been established.<br />

The main two storey brick building is only accessible downstairs The outside<br />

classrooms and the new two storey building have access for students with<br />

disabilities. The Hall can easily be accessed by wheelchairs.<br />

Parking and traffic around the school is limited. A well established OSHC and<br />

Vacation program are on site. An Emu crossing Thomas Street is monitored by<br />

trained students mornings and afternoons. Students in years 5-7 are expected to be<br />

rostered for this duty.<br />

Decision making structures<br />

Committee structures exist for staff as well as community. Committees are<br />

used to report issues for full staff and or Governing Council approval. Democratic<br />

decision-making processes are an accepted feature of the school structure. SRC<br />

has influence in the school’s decision making.<br />

routinely used. Notices advertising special occasions are displayed around the<br />

of funds is from government grants, school fees and fundraising.<br />

The school relies on a number of very small grants and fundraising to enhance the<br />

program. Commonwealth and State grants have enabled upgrades in many aspects<br />

The suburb is compact. There is a strong demand for enrolment at the school. There is a<br />

close knit community with strong involvement in the school. Out of <strong>School</strong> Hours Care,<br />

Prospect Library, Gallery, Prospect Centre, Toy Library and Playgroup are all on the one<br />

site providing a genuine community facility.<br />
