DR. LAURA M. ENG
Dr. Laura Eng grew up in Peoria, Illinois, went to the University of Iowa for dental
hygiene and then the University of Minnesota School of Dentisry. There she met her
husband, Bob, now an orthodontist in Saint Paul. Just days before graduation,
she was very fortunate to meet Dr. Patrick Mascia, with whom she practiced for
25 years until his retirement.
Dr. Laura M. Eng
She started her involvement with the Saint Paul District as Chair of “Children’s
Dental Health Day at the Zoo” many years ago. Since then she has been enthusiastic
about what organized dentistry can do to enhance our practices and balance our lives.
She has worked to make membership valuable to all dentists at the SPDDS, MDA
and ADA levels. Laura has been the Chair of the SPDDS and MDA Membership
Committees and served on the ADA Council on Membership, along with other
membership-related activities. She was on SPDDS Executive Council and served
as President in 2005. During that time, she developed the “SPDDS 5:05 Clubs”,
where members can meet informally with other dentists who work near them.
Laura enjoys volunteering at her church, time at the cabin, biking, and traveling with
Bob to see their grown children, son David and daughter-in-law, Kristina who live in
Ann Arbor, and daughter Carolyn who is a biology graduate student at Harvard.
your life.
Lorraine launched her career in dentistry over
35 years ago. While successfully managing a
respected periodontal-implant pra ctice in upstate
New York, her husband’s career led them to the
Twin Cities in 1997. She continued her work in
dentistry through practice development and shortly
thereafter founded IDR, a Coaching and
Compliance Resource Company that provides
dental teams outsource management solutions by
analysis and program implementation to improve
workflow strategies. IDR has a proven reputation
for building success by bringing support and
Can’t turn your neck without pain? What about
that aching back yelling at you?? Most people have
or at some point develop aches and/or pains in
their neck, back, and other parts of their body due
to stress, poor posture and/or excess weight. You
will learn techniques you can use to help relieve
some of those aches and pains using a foam roller
or a free weight as well as stretches and exercises.
We will also be discussing different modalities of
massage that would be best suited for your needs.
Table #7
1 Fundamental
If you have ever watched a professional sporting
event and witnessed a traumatic dental injury, then
wondered, ‘who is treating this player and where is
the player getting treatment’? Then this breakfast
seminar is for you. Most professional organizations
have several medical personnel on staff to ensure
safety of the players and that the players remain at
their optimum performance level. The medical
team often includes a dentist. The dentist is usually
in attendance at every game, ready to treat players
that have suffered a dental injury on the field or on
the ice. As one of the team dentists for the NHL’s
Minnesota Wild, Dr. Pelke will discuss the trials
and tribulations that are involved with working
with professional athletes and their support staff.
This light discussion will also include an overview
of “Sports Dentistry” and why he believes all
dentists are, and should be considered sports
dentists. We will also discuss five pearls of wisdom
every dentist should know in treating traumatic
dental injuries.
Dr. Michael Pelke grew up a ‘quasi’ athlete. After
attending Drake University and playing football he
soon realized that sports and team dentistry are
great ways of being involved in the athletics you
love- without all the sweating! Dr. Pelke graduated
from the University Of Minnesota School of
Dentistry in 2002. He is an active member of the
Academy of Sports Dentistry, the NHL Team
Dentists Association, the ADA and the Saint Paul
District Dental Society. Dr. Pelke is a team dentist
for the MN Wild, MN Swarm, and the St. Paul
Saints. He resides and practices in Woodbury.
problem
Donald Nixdorf, DDS, MS
8:20-9:10 am
Great River II
1 Core: Diagnosis &
Treatment Planning
Peri-operative, meaning pre-, intra- and post-operative,
pain management has been a long-standing concern
for dentists. Emerging evidence suggests that the
underlying sensory status of your patients has a large
impact on how they experience peri-operative pain.
During this evidence-driven lecture, Dr. Nixdorf will
review data describing peri-operative pain, discuss ways
to identify patients thought to be at increased risk for
pain, and present a rational approach to manage these
patients when dental treatment is required.
Dr. Donald Nixdorf is an Assistant Professor at the
University of Minnesota in the Division of TMD &
Orofacial Pain with research interests in the diagnosis
and management of persistent orofacial pains.
Following dental school at the University of Alberta, he
completed a GPR (OSU), Anesthesia fellowship (Johns
Hopkins), Orofacial Pain fellowship (U Alberta), and
research fellowships (U Washington & Oxford). He is a
Diplomate of the National Dental Board of
Anesthesiology, past Chair of the Examination Council
the American Board of Orofacial Pain, and current
member of the Trigeminal Neuralgia Association’s
Medical Advisory Board.
Are Clenching
and Bruxing
Stress Induced?
Leesa Morrow,
Ph.D, JD, LP
8:20-9:10 am
Kellogg
1 Core: Diagnosis &
Treatment Planning
Is clenching and bruxing stress induced or stress
exacerbated? Why does it matter? Clenching and
bruxing are complex, quasi-automatic neuromuscular
parafunctional behaviors that are clinically related to
other movement disorders. Like most movement
disorders, certain psychological states can exacerbate
clenching and bruxing. This presentation is devoted
to a discussion of etiology, drug-induced clenching
and bruxing (both medical and iatrogenic) and the
role of behavioral treatment in oral parafunction.
Dr. Morrow completed a doctorate in Clinical
Health Psychology at the University of North Texas
and an internship in Clinical Psychology at Indiana
University School of Medicine. She has devoted her
career to a blend of clinical practice and teaching.
Dr. Morrow has expertise in the treatment of acute
and chronic pain, as well as stress exacerbated
systemic illnesses. She uses a variety of treatment
modalities including biofeedback, hypnosis and
cognitive-behavioral therapy. After many years
working as a clinical psychologist, she completed a
degree in law at Indiana University School of Law.
This additional education expanded Dr. Morrow’s
professional expertise with the understanding of
bioethics and medical malpractice.
Applications
of New 3D
Imaging
Technology
for General
Dentistry
Ernest Reeh, DDS, MS, PhD
9:35-10:25 am
Great River I
1 Fundamental
This lecture is designed for the whole dental team
with specific applications for the hygienist and the
dentist. Technology continues to advance in
dentistry at an ever increasing rate. One of the
most recent advances has been the next
generation of 3D imaging. The newest
technology is called “small field, high resolution,
cone beam, computed tomography” or CBCT for
short. We are now able to take views we have
always wanted and have never been able to
achieve before. The results have been dramatic
and exciting. We will first start with a brief
overview of 3D imaging and then spend the
majority of the lecture concentrating on specific
cases. Conventional digital radiography will be
held side by side with 3D imaging and the
resulting benefits will become clearly visible.
Both dentists and hygienists will see useful
applications of the technology. With the advent
of high resolution small field CBCT—3D
imaging is no longer just for placing implants.
Dr. Ernest Reeh received a BS in Chemistry and
DDS at the University of Alberta, his MS, PhD
and clinical specialty in Endodontics at the
University of Minnesota. He is a Diplomate of the
American Board of Endodontics. Dr. Reeh is in
private practice at River Valley Endodontics.
David Resch, DDS
9:35-10:25 am
Great River II
1 Core:
Infection Control
Since the early 1990’s Dr. Resch has trained Minnesota
private and group practices in OSHA regulations and
infection control in dentistry, presented at the
Minnesota “Star of the North” meeting and lectured for
the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry’s
continuing dental education programs. He is the
“OSHA Doctor” at a large group practice in St. Paul
with more than 60 dental health care workers. In 1994
his group practice experienced a random OSHA
inspection which resulted in no violations, no citations,
and no fines. He considers himself an “in the trenches”
wet finger dentist that can help his colleagues and their
staff really get a handle on and get organized with their
approach to OSHA regulations and infection control
procedures in dentistry. His almost 30 years in the field
of dentistry and the last 17 being intimately involved in
all facets of infection control and OSHA regulations
have given him an education and insight that many
others have not experienced.
Dr. Resch received his DDS degree from the University
of Minnesota in 1978 and has been an active
participant in his profession. In 1992 he was the
Minnesota representative to the ADA Task Force on
Infection Control and OSHA Regulations in Dentistry.
He is the past chairperson of the Minnesota Dental
Association Ad Hoc Committee on OSHA and Infection
Control. He is presently co-chair of the Minnesota
Dental Association’s Environment and Safety
Committee, and a former member of the sub-committee
on Bio-terrorism. In 2008 he became a member of the
Scientific Sessions Committee for the Minnesota Dental
Association. He is an active member in The
Organization for Safety & Asepsis Procedures (OSAP).
OSAP is an international organization, which promotes
science-based policies and practices for infection control,
health, and safety in dental healthcare settings
worldwide. He is also a past president of the St. Paul
1 Core: Diagnosis &
Treatment Planning
Loss of bone support following tooth extraction can have
a detrimental effect on the restorability of the site with an
implant restoration and diminish the esthetic potential of
even a pontic site. Site preservation by the general dentist
at the time of extraction can save the patient time,
money and esthetics by maintaining the alveolar bone
and soft tissue for implant or pontic placement.
Dr. Johnson will define and discuss various techniques
for flapless ridge preservation. These techniques can be
accomplished with minimally invasive procedures
following tooth extraction. Materials, techniques and
their rational will be presented. Selection criteria for the
various techniques will be reviewed and indications for
the selection of the various techniques will be presented.
Dr. Johnson received her DDS in 1981 from the
University of North Carolina. Immediately upon
graduating, she entered the U.S. Navy as a dental
officer. Dr Johnson completed an advanced clinical
program in exodontias while in the navy and she
completed her residency training in periodontics at the
Naval Postgraduate Dental School, Bethesda, MD in
2000. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of
Periodontology. She is currently a Clinical Associate
Professor in Periodontology at the University of
Minnesota School of Dentistry. In addition to teaching
full-time, Dr. Johnson participates in the faculty
practice at the University of Minnesota in a practice
limited to implant dentistry and periodontics.
OUTSTANDING
DENTAL HYGIENIST…
Louann Goodnough, RDH, BSDH
Louann graduated from the dental hygiene program at the
University of Minnesota in 2001 and has had the honor of
positively affecting the life of many patients. Her daily focus
has been individual patient care and helping patients
understand their dental needs and concerns. Louann has relied on many of her life
experiences to relate to her diverse patient needs and concerns.
Throughout her dental hygiene education and career, Louann has been involved with
the American Dental Hygiene Association. Without this association Louann does not
feel she would have the passion for her career which she now experiences. The
MnDHA has aided in the development of her career and helped in clinical situations,
networking, and continuing education. Louann has held many positions within the
MnDHA and is currently the ADHA District VII Trustee, a national position. As a
student, Louann was honored to be a delegate at the ADHA annual session where
she was inspired to participate, learn, and grow within the profession. Now when
mentoring students, Louann hopes she is able to give back the same level knowledge
and care that has been given to her.
Louann enjoys road trips and watching old movies with her husband and dogs.
She has also been a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity and has participated in
breast cancer and heart association walks. She feels fortunate to provide care for
her patients and to be associated with many wonderful colleagues.
OUTSTANDING
DENTAL ASSISTANT…
Barbara Seidel, LDA
Barb Seidel started her career in dental assisting at Century
College. After graduating, she has worked in a variety of
settings which included the offices of Drs. Franta and
Nelson, Dr. McCarter, Dr. Wilkes, and Dr. Anderson.
In these different settings, Barb has learned a variety of
techniques, many of which were not taught in a textbook. She recalls tapping gold
foil restorations and making hydrocolloid impressions, techniques that are not
commonly used now.
In 1984 Barb moved to the office of Dr. Bomberg in Highland Park and still
works there today. In the 26 years that she has worked there, Barb has taken on
many new responsibilities within the office. She enjoys continuing education
and staying current in the profession. She is also proud to serve in the dental
community and encourages all of her dental assisting colleagues to continue to
learn and to network with other dental assistants.
Barb and her husband have been married for 28 years and have four boys.
She loves sewing, traveling, and camping in her free time.
DENTAL
Excellence in care starts with a
strong patient relationship. At
HealthPartners Dental Group
& Clinics we encourage that
relationship and support our
staff by helping them stay current
on the constantly evolving practice
of dentistry.
Our strategy has been to forge a
new care model by developing
ways of constantly improving our
care process on the basis of clinical
research. Our adoption of an
evidence-based approach to care
means that we can identify persons
at risk of developing oral diseases
before the onset of disease.
The result of this approach is
world-class care that is consistently
recognized among the best in
the county.
With over 15 metro locations, we
have nearly 50 general dentists
and several specialists on staff.
Thanks to our Volunteers!
Union Gospel Mission extends gratitude to many devoted volunteers this
past year and looks to the future with new stategies for dental care at
Union Gospel Mission. We always need new dentists that are interested
in volenteering on Thursdays—dentists work in three operatories and
use the fourth as a triage or overflow room, which is much needed.
If you are interested in volunteering your time please contact
