My favorite part of the day is spent riding
my bike. I am a physician, and I see my cycling
as a form of preventive medicine. I’ve
noticed that cyclists eat more healthily and are
more relaxed than the rest of the population. I
never have the same stress on my bike as I do
commuting through Philadelphia traffic in my
car. I enjoy the beautiful scenery and feel my
worries lighten. It all dates back
to my riding a bike to St. Joseph’s every
day when I was young!
Now that I’m 72 years old and in perfect
health, I feel it is payback time. So each
week I visit three nursing homes to provide eye
care to those who cannot easily get to medical
offices. Then on Thursdays I work in the
emergency room at Wills Eye Hospital
teaching and training young physicians.
I think my Sacred Heart education instilled in
me the importance of corporal works of
mercy. I know that my Sacred Heart education
taught me how to respect people and helped
me develop a lifelong interest in learning. I
also learned to always ‘do the right thing.’
This mantra has become my life motto.
