Heart of the Campus
A Fond
Farewell
On June 3rd, the SHS community gathered
to bid farewell to Dr. Joseph J.
Ciancaglini and Ms. Karen Eshoo (SJSH ‘83,
SHP ‘87), and wish them well in their new
adventures.
After seven years of dedicated service as
Director of Schools, Joe has moved to New
York City to serve as Head of the Sacred
Heart School at 91st Street. This opportunity
is a unique fit with Joe’s desire to return to the
east coast to be closer to friends and family,
stay within the Sacred Heart Network, and
live in a major city.
During Joe’s tenure, academics have grown
stronger than ever. Our sports teams have
enjoyed remarkable seasons. The fine and
performing arts have reached new heights of
excellence. Our seniors continue to be admitted
into colleges that best fit their needs. The
Oakwood community has grown in number
and in its involvement with the life of the
school. Our campus continues to be beautiful.
Our physical plant has grown to support the
many activities that take place here. We have
been blessed with professional, caring and
gifted teachers and staff. Our relationships
with our neighbors, the Town of Atherton,
and the Archdiocese of San Francisco have
grown even more strong, positive, and mutually
supportive. Our endowment has grown
significantly and the financial position of the
school is strong.
Karen has been a part of the SHS community
for 27 years— 15 years as a student from preschool through 12th grade,
5 years as a teacher at Sacred Heart Prep, and 7 years in administration at St.
Joseph’s School of the Sacred Heart. Most recently, she has served as SJSH Principal
for grades 1-8. During her tenure at SJSH, the faculty and students have grown
stronger than ever. She leaves the school ready for further growth and success in
academics, athletics, fine arts, spirituality, and community.
Karen has transitioned
into the role
of Assistant Head of
School at Lick-Wilmerding
High School in
San Francisco. This is
an opportunity for her
to continue her work in
administration, but to
do so at the high school
level and in an urban
setting.
San Francisco Murals
To learn more about Latino
art, SJSH and SHP
Spanish classes recently
journeyed to San Francisco
to view various murals.
The SJSH sixth graders, led
by Spanish teachers Ms.
Alison Trujillo and Ms.
Isolina Martinez, explored
the Mission District, taking
a guided bilingual tour
of Balmy Alley, located
near 24th Street. They saw
dozens of beautiful murals,
including La Virgen, I Give You a Song, and Native Struggle.
At the high school, after studying the art of Diego Rivera in class, Ms. Pati Galvin’s
and Mrs. Maggie Mera’s SHP Spanish 4 classes went to San Francisco to see three of
his murals, located at The City Club of SF, the SF Art Institute, and City College of
SF. Both groups enjoyed a rewarding and unforgettable day of learning.
