State of the Heart Dear Alumni and Friends, I need to start my letter by thanking my predecessor, Dr. Joseph J. Ciancaglini, for his tireless efforts on behalf of the Schools over the past seven years. We have benefited enormously from his leadership, and the Schools are even stronger today in their commitment to educate the whole child. I am delighted that Joe is continuing his service in the Sacred Heart Network as Head of the Sacred Heart School in New York City (“91st Street”). Joe has been instrumental in the growth and success of the Schools, and I look forward to continuing that momentum. Our students continually demonstrate such tremendous excellence in academics, spirituality, service, and athletics. One only need stroll through the halls of SHP to find art students working on a ground-breaking exhibit on issues of immigration, science students creating their own robots, trivia masters preparing for their Quiz Kids matches, and the boys tennis team winning a national tournament. At SJSH, our middle school jazz band has been using their talents to spread joy in the community, while sixth-grade Spanish students have been studying murals in San Francisco’s Mission District and third graders have been exploring nature. Our preschoolers and kindergarteners have all made tremendous progress in their studies this year, learning about world cultures and becoming great artists and cooks. We ended our school year by welcoming 170 new graduates into our SHS Alumni Association — a truly outstanding class of 113 seniors from SHP, and 57 remarkable eighth graders from SJSH. These new alumni will join the ranks of thousands of children of the Sacred Heart who have gone on to share their values throughout the world. Take, for example, the community service efforts of Nicole Norton (SJSH ‘93, SHP ‘97) and Dr. Don Manley (SJSH ‘47), the sacrifices of dedicated parent Cristina Echevarria Moustirats (SHP ‘90), the artistic endeavors of Drue Kataoka (SHP ‘96), and the educational ministry of Sr. Kathleen Dolan (SH Greenwich ‘56). And it’s not just alumni who exemplify our Sacred Heart goals and criteria. In this issue of Heart of the Matter, we take a look at other members of our community — including parents, teachers, and administrators — who make our Schools vibrant through their daily efforts. I count myself blessed to have the opportunity to serve as the next Director of Schools and to watch as our students grow in their spirituality, their intellect, their character, their activities, and their wise freedom.
