ACADEMICS FIRST
At Coleman, academics are first! It is imperative that we prepare our students for their future and that means
teaching them to be responsible for completing their assignments. We are continuing to raise the bar on student
achievement, by continuing our Academics First student list which continues to have a positive impact on our
students. The Academics First list targets students who continue to earn F‟s due to incomplete or missing
homework. These students will not be allowed to participate in any other extracurricular Coleman activities, either
as a participant or as a spectator until they receive a progress report with no F‟s.
In order to help our students get off this list or improve their current grades, we offer Cougar Time during the After
School Program (ASP) for 45 minutes of homework completion and school-wide tutoring during the school day, so
that students can get assignments turned in before the teacher‟s due date. Students may also be required to
attend Mandatory Tutoring during their lunch and recess times.
ACTIVITIES/ATHLETICS
After School Program
The After School Program (ASP) is open to all Coleman students. Parents may enroll their student in ASP by
obtaining an application during enrollment or in the E-hall office. A completed application must be on file for
students to participate. Students involved in ASP are engaged in supervised activities Monday through Thursday
from 3:15pm-5:00pm. A snack is provided for participants. A late bus is available to certain locations. Parents
must pick up their students by 5:00 pm. Late pick-ups are not allowed.
Some activities include but are not limited to:
Tutoring
Computers/technology
YMCA sponsored events
Intramurals
Recreation activities
Athletics
(7 th and 8 th graders only)
Fall
Cross Country (Boys and Girls)
Volleyball (Girls only)
Winter Basketball (Boys and Girls)
Spring Track and Field (Boys and Girls)
Academic eligibility is established by KSHSAA (Kansas State High School Activities Association).
A student must have passed 5 classes of unit weight the previous semester in order to participate.
A current sports physical must be on file before a student is allowed to practice.
A new physical must be obtained for every school year.
Physicals must be done after May 1.
Spectators who display inappropriate behavior at games will be excluded from future athletic contests.
Spectators who are not picked up promptly at the end of the event will be excluded from future athletic
contests.
Keep in mind that all USD 259 Wichita Public Schools and school events are tobacco free zones.
No pets allowed on school property or at school events.
Students with an excused or unexcused absence more than half of the school day are not permitted to
participate in extracurricular activities scheduled for that date.
ATTENDANCE
Attendance: It’s the Law
The state attendance laws are explicit in the definition of valid excuses for absence from school. A student is
expected to be punctual and regular in attendance to school. The parent is charged with the duty of keeping the
student‟s attendance regular.
Notification of an absence
Parents of students absent from school are to call the attendance line, 973-6604, by 8:30am the day of the
absence. Please leave the following information on voice mail:
- Identify yourself
- Student‟s name
- Date(s) of absence
- Reason for absence (please be specific i.e. dr. appt., illness, out of town, etc…)
4
An absence may also be excused by sending a written excuse from the parent to the office upon the student‟s
return. Parents are required to contact the attendance office to request excused absences within 72 hours of the
absence. Failure to contact the attendance office within 72 hours will result in the absence remaining
unexcused. If a phone is not available for parents to call, we will accept a note upon their return. Students are to
bring notes to the attendance office.
Reminder: Students arriving to class after half the class has been in session will be counted absent for that class.
Ex: A student must be seated in class within the first 20 minutes of a 40 minute class period.
A student must be seated in class within the first 40 minutes of an 80 minute block class.
Students MUST attend at least ½ school day minimum to attend or participate in
ANY afterschool activity or event.
Leaving During the School Day
When a student needs to leave school during the day, the parent is to call or send a note with the student to be
taken to the E-Hall office before school. The student will be issued an excuse slip, which indicates the time
she/he is to check out of school. The student must present the excuse slip to the teacher and sign the checkout
sheet in the E-hall office when leaving and again upon returning to school. Leaving for lunch is discouraged.
Excused Absences
Absences will only be excused for the following reasons:
illness
doctor‟s or dentist‟s appointments
a family death or serious illness
court/judicial duty
school sponsored activities
Excessive absences will result in a doctor‟s memo being required.
Homebound Referral/Extended Illness
A parent needs to call the attendance clerk (973-6604) if a student will be absent for an extended illness. When it
is determined that, because of a physical or mental health problem, a student shall be absent for three weeks or
more, the parent shall contact the counselor at 973-6600 for a homebound referral.
Request for Absence
All other absences (other than those absences listed above) are unexcused unless approved by a principal prior
to the absence. A Request for Absence form should be completed, signed by the parent and returned to school
for approval for absences concerning out of town trips, weddings, family vacation, etc., one week in advance.
We will only allow 5 days of prior/principal approved absences for the school year for a student in good academic
standing.
Unexcused Absences
Upon reaching 20 hours of unexcused absences, it will be required that the student and the parent meet with a
school official to discuss the absenteeism.
Upon reaching 35 hours of unexcused absences (3 consecutive days anytime during the school year, 5 days in a
semester, or 7 days in a school year), or 96 hours of excused absences, the student and parents will be referred
to either Social Rehabilitation Services Truancy Unit or the District Attorney‟s office.
Make-Up Work Policy
If a student is absent two or more days, the parent may call the office and request assignments. Teachers must
have 24 hours notice to gather assignments. Assignments to be picked up are kept in the E-office.
It is the responsibility of the student to make up assignments that were missed due to absences (BOE P1472).
The student needs to ask the teacher for work missed upon returning to class. Although individual teacher
policies may vary, students have the time they were absent, plus one additional day to turn in make-up work.
Tardy to School
All Wichita middle school students are expected to arrive at school on time each day. Students who are not in
class after the final bell has rung are considered tardy and expected to report to E-Hall Office to sign in and
receive a class admit slip. Students will be given excused admit slips for late arrival for the following reasons: late
buses, medical appointments, or required appearances in court. Documentation must be provided in order to
receive and excused admit slip.
5
Students who arrive late to school for any of the reasons not listed above will be given an unexcused admit slip
and will be issued a lunch detention. We do understand that things outside of our control do occasionally happen
so, each student is allowed one “free” tardy per quarter before consequences will be given. Unexcused tardies
include oversleeping, work issues, flat tires, traffic, stopped by train, car trouble, missed bus, etc.
Tardy/Late Admittance to Class
A student is tardy to class if she/he has not entered the room (crossed the threshold) before the bell starts to ring.
The teacher will issue a lunch/recess detention. If teachers hold a student in his or her room after class, the
teacher must provide a signed pass in the Student Agenda/Handbook. Tardies present a significant disruption to
the school day. A student who is tardy to class most frequently is tardy because she/he chose to visit and "hang"
in the halls rather than go on to class. When the student walks in tardy, teaching is disrupted because the
teacher must address the tardy. We ask that the parent/guardian take serious steps at home in support of the
student being on time to all classes. Random hall sweeps are conducted to ensure all students are in class on
time
BICYCLES, SKATEBOARDS, ROLLERBLADES
Students need to lock their bicycles in the bike racks on the north side of the building by E-hall.
The school is not responsible for missing or damaged bicycles.
Students who ride skateboards or roller blades to school may keep them in their locker.
Skateboards, roller blades, and bicycles may NOT be ridden in school, in the parking lot or on school
grounds.
BUSES/TRANSPORTATION TO SCHOOL
Buses
Transportation to Coleman is available to students who live two and a half miles or more from school.
All students who ride the bus are provided with bus rules prior to the start of the school year.
Riding a school bus is a privilege that can be suspended or revoked.
Bus riders must present a bus card when requested by the driver or bus supervisor.
Failure to present a bus card in the afternoon will result in the student having to call for a ride from parent or
guardian.
The first bus card is given to the students free of charge. Replacement cards cost .50 cents.
Request for a Temporary Ride on another student‟s bus must be submitted no later than 10 am the day of the
ride. Administrative approval is contingent upon a phone call or personal contact with parents of both the rider
and the guest.
Cars
Circle drive is for drop off and pick up only
Do not block the bus loading/unloading zones
Do not block the entrances to the circle drive and parking lots as this is a drop-off area for buses, mini-busses
and emergency vehicle parking
Do not use the far North entrance by the fence as this is for buses only.
CAFETERIA/RECESS EXPECTATIONS
Breakfast
Breakfast is served in the cafeteria starting at 7:35 am. Students going to breakfast must enter through the main
north entrance and go directly to the cafeteria. Students must remain in the cafeteria until the 7:50 am bell. Food
must be eaten in the cafeteria. No food is sold after 7:55 am unless students arrive on a late bus. Students must
be in class by 8:00 a.m. The cost of breakfast is $1.30
Lunch
Lunch is closed. Students must eat lunch at school in the cafeteria. Students are required to report to the
cafeteria or recess before the tardy bell according to their assigned lunch/recess group.
The student I.D. is the student’s lunch card. Students that do not have their I.D. will report to designated
tables and will be given permission to join a lunch line by administration or lunch supervisor.
Food and drink must be consumed during the allotted lunch time in the cafeteria, the detention room, or teacher
supervised area. Students are to clean their lunch area and stack their styrofoam trays. Students are to remain
seated until a lunchroom supervisor dismisses them. All students are to follow the directions of the lunch
supervisors. Students failing to report to their assigned lunch/recess group will face disciplinary action. The cost of
each lunch is $2.15.
6
Recess
Students must have their student ID card to participate in recess
Student recess is east of the cafeteria or in cases of inclement weather the gym.
1 st recess students will exit the southeast building door and re-enter the cafeteria door.
Students must stay within the boundary lines on the grass.
The east half of the recess area is for soccer and football only.
When the whistle signal is sounded, students are to line up quickly in their appropriate lines on the basketball
court and wait to be sent in to the cafeteria.
Second recess students are to stay off the basketball court until 1 st recess students have been sent in.
When the whistle signal is sounded to end 2 nd recess, students are to line up quickly in their appropriate lines
on the basketball court and wait for dismissal. They will enter the southeast building doors when dismissed to
return to classes.
Students that don‟t stop playing with equipment after the signal or don‟t stay in their lines face disciplinary
action.
Lunch/Recess Detention Procedures
Students assigned a lunch/recess detention are to report directly to the detention room before the tardy bell.
Students failing to report on their own are subject to additional detentions. The detention list will be displayed in
designated areas. Students who have a detention will eat in the detention room.
CELL PHONES, ELECTRONICS, ETC.
According to BOE Policy 1464, “The use of Personal Electronic Devices (PED‟s) by pupils during the school day
is prohibited. These devices must be kept out of sight and powered off during the school day. The school day is
defined by each school site. PED‟s include, but are not limited to, pagers, cellular phones, MP3 players, and other
personal communication devices that have the potential to be disruptive to the educational process. Items
intended to look like or simulate such devices are also prohibited during the school day.”
Any PED will be confiscated by any school personnel who find them. The items will be given to the office for
safekeeping. They will only be released to the parent of the student who owns the device and/or brought the
device to school. Coleman Middle School accepts no responsibility for these devices. Keep them at home!
Students are to relinquish their electronic equipment upon request of any staff member should you be using one
of them at school. Refusal to do so will constitute open defiance and result in more severe disciplinary
consequences.
Students who violate this policy and the associated regulations shall be deemed to have created a
disruption to the instructional environment and are subject to appropriate disciplinary actions.
Students shall be personally and solely responsible for the security of their cellular telephones and other
PEDs. The Wichita Board of Education shall not assume responsibility or liability for the theft, loss, or
damage to a cellular phone or other PED, nor does it assume responsibility for the unauthorized use of
any device.
Consequences for using/displaying electronic devices include:
1 st Offense Confiscate and parent picks up
2 nd Offense Confiscate, parent picks up, and student receives ASD
3 rd Offense Confiscate, parent picks up, and student receives ISS
4 th Offense Confiscate, parent picks up, disciplinary action subject to administrative discretion
COLEMAN PARENT COMMUNICATION
COUNSELOR
Students who need to see the counselor need to sign the request log in the E-hall or A-hall office during passing
period or have a pass. The counselor will send for the student as soon as possible. The counselor helps
students with personal problems, scheduling, conflicts and career information.
7
CRIME STOPPERS/SPEAK UP
Crime Stoppers is a program designed to allow individuals to exercise good citizenship by reporting information
regarding crimes or for those who have been the victim of a possible crime. At Coleman, any student or staff
member may anonymously report information leading to the apprehension of parties responsible for criminal
activities by coming to the A-hall office and filling out a Crime Stoppers report. Tips may also be given by texting
„SPEAKUP‟ plus your tip information to CRIMES (274637) or go to the Coleman website. Rewards are given for
information that proves to be helpful. No one ever learns your name when you make a Crime Stopper Report or
Speak Up tip.
CONFERENCES/REPORT CARDS/PROGRESS REPORTS
The easiest and best way for parents to monitor their students‟ academic performance/progress is to utilize the
Parent Assist Program. Report cards are issued each nine-week period. Parent-Teacher-Student conferences
will be held twice a school year, once each semester. See your school calendar for dates. Parents may also
schedule to meet with teachers during team time. Progress reports will be sent home with students at the midpoint
of each nine-week grading period. This will give an approximate grade and indicate student strengths and
areas to work on for the students.
DISASTER DRILLS
Students and staff must be prepared to meet an emergency at all times. School staff and substitute personnel will
be familiar with emergency drill procedures (fire, severe weather, and shelter-in-place). Emergency drills must be
taken seriously. Instruction for the students‟ safety may be given at any time during the drill.
DRINK/VENDING MACHINES
Drink and vending machines will be available before 8:00a.m. and after school, 3:10 p.m. Any abuse of these
machines or any cans or bottles littering our property will result in the machines being pulled from student use.
The office will not give change or refunds for any reason (drinks, bus, field trips, etc.). Students purchasing items
from the machines in violation of this policy will have their items confiscated and be subject to further disciplinary
action. Use all vending machines at your own risk.
DISCIPLINE
Discipline Policy
The goal of disciplining students is to modify student behavior so they can be successful in school. All after
school detentions (ASD), in-school suspensions (ISS), out-of-school suspensions (OSS), and/or expulsions will
be initiated by an administrator.
The teacher is in charge of the classroom and is responsible for normal classroom discipline. Students will
comply with the established classroom behavioral expectations. The teacher may contact the parent, assign a
detention, rotate a student to another classroom, and/or refer the student to the team in order to change the
disruptive behavior. Teachers can assign their own detentions and students are expected to serve those
detentions in the teacher‟s room or in the team detention room.
Behavior identified as extreme and disruptive will be referred to the administration. An administrator will resolve
the problem with a conference with the student, team action, lunch detention, parent conference, student behavior
logs or contracts ,ASD, ISS, OSS, and/or expulsion.
Some students may have behavior plans that guide their discipline procedures.
Expectations for Behavior at School
The types of behavior that occur in the halls establish the climate of the school. Passing period is the time to go
from one room to the next, to use the restroom and go to the students‟ locker.
The following behavior is not acceptable in any part of the building:
Running
Yelling
Pushing/shoving
Loitering
Disrespectful language
Horseplay or similar types of behavior
Personal contact or display of affection
Profane language
Fighting
Lack of respect to staff and students
Walking in groups
Blocking the hallway
8
Team Conference Concerning Student Behavior
Teams may conduct team-student-parent conferences as one of the steps to correct inappropriate chronic
behavior or excessive rotations from classes. In an effort to correct student behavior teams may:
restrict student passing periods
self-contain the student for one or more days
restrict the student from team activities
The team leader is responsible for informing the appropriate assistant principal and contacting the parent about
the conference.
Detentions/Detention Room
The detention room is for office assigned detentions, tardies, loitering, hallway misbehavior and dress code
violations. Students are issued a pink copy of the detention slip and are expected to share the slip with their
parents. When a student is assigned a detention, she/he will report to the detention room before he/she goes to
the cafeteria for lunch. Students in the detention room will eat lunch in the detention room. In the detention room
there is no talking. Students must follow the detention room rules or more serious consequences will be
assigned.
After School Detention (ASD)
After school detention is assigned after 10 lunch/recess detentions have been issued in a semester. After school
detention is held on designated days after school from 3:15 – 4:45 pm. Students who are assigned an after
school detention will be notified at least 24 hours in advance via notification sent home with student.
Failure to serve an after school detention will result in more serious consequences such as In School Suspension.
In School Suspension (ISS)
ISS will be used as a consequence after other intervention strategies have been tried and the student has failed
to correct the behavior, and for serious infractions. Students assigned to ISS are to report to the cafeteria and wait
for the ISS supervisor to pick them up. They will need to follow ISS rules and serve respectfully. Failure to serve
successfully will result in more serious consequences.
Certain actions by students are subject to out of school suspension. These include but are not limited to:
Fighting during school, on a bus or at a bus stop
Student Photo ID Cards
Student safety is of primary importance. We use photo ID cards at Coleman Middle School to help us identify
students. In addition to identification, student ID cards are used as library cards and lunch cards. Expectations
regarding the use of and care for these cards is listed below:
Student ID cards must be displayed at all times during the school day. The ID must be displayed on a lanyard
around the neck or on a clip attached to the shirt collar.
Students are responsible for keeping track of and securing their own ID card.
ID cards must never be written on, marked on, scratched, defaced, cut, or mutilated in any way. This applies
to both the front and back of the ID card.
ID cards that have been written on, marked on, scratched, defaced, cut, or mutilated must be given to
administration and a new one purchased the next school day.
Lost ID cards must be replaced with the purchase of a new one the next school day.
Students must never have in their possession another student‟s ID card. Found ID cards must be promptly
submitted to a staff member.
Replacement ID cards and lanyards may be purchased in E Office daily: ID cards cost $2.50 and lanyards cost
$2.50.
11
Temporary Student ID Cards
Students without their ID card must promptly report to A Office for a temporary ID card and lanyard. Each
issuance of a temporary ID results in a lunch/recess detention. Expectations regarding the use of and care for
these cards is the same as stated above. These temporary ID cards and lanyards are picked up from students
during the last period of the day. If a student does not have his/her temporary ID and lanyard picked up, it is
his/her responsibility to return it to A Office before exiting the building that day.
Failure to adhere to these expectations will result in administrative disciplinary action.
HALLWAY BEHAVIOR
Hallway Expectations
A safe and orderly environment in any school is of primary importance. During each of Coleman‟s many passing
periods in a day, over 600 students are moving from one class to the next. Students that walk at a respectful
pace, remain in motion with a focus on arriving to class on time, and use quiet voices contribute to orderly passing
periods. However, students that run, congregate with others, stop to visit, pass notes, shout, push and shove, and
engage in horseplay can quickly contribute to a chaotic environment. We at Coleman are committed to providing
all students with safe and orderly passing periods. Therefore, any student failing to meet hallway expectations will
be firmly addressed.
Those who disregard these expectations are subject to in-school or out-of-school suspension.
We will not tolerate a willful violation of these rules at any time, for any reason.
Specifically, students are expected to:
‣ Use quiet, respectful voices
‣ Walk at a respectful pace
‣ Remain in motion. Do not stop to visit or congregate with others.
‣ Never engage in horseplay.
‣ Keep hands and feet to themselves.
Hall Passes
A student should NEVER be in the hall without a properly displayed ID badge and his/her student Planner opened
to the signed pass page. If students are released late from a class, they MUST obtain a pass from that teacher in
order to avoid being counted tardy to the next class. It is the student‟s responsibility to obtain a pass if they leave
a classroom.
Hall Sweeps
Hall sweeps will be conducted by the administration and teachers to reinforce the importance of students being in
class on time. Students in halls without a pass during a "sweep" will be given a lunch detention. If a student is
chronically tardy to class, other disciplinary action including a parent conference and /or self-containment in a
classroom will occur.
HEALTH SERVICES
If a student becomes ill in school, he should request a pass from the teacher to see the nurse. Students who are
ill MUST call home from the nurse’s office. Students should not leave the building without authorization from
the nurse. If the nurse is not in, students are to report to the E-hall office.
Policy restricts school personnel from giving students any medication, including aspirin. Prescribed medication is
given at school only upon a written request from both the parent/guardian and the student‟s attending physician.
These written requests are required before administration of either short term or maintenance medication is
allowed. Students must have received one dose of medication without an adverse reaction prior to any doses
given at school. We also ask that parents notify the school nurse if there are health conditions that may require
attention, such as asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, etc…
Immunizations must be current.
LOCKERS
Sharing lockers or locker combinations is not permitted. Students should never have belongings of another
student in his/her locker. Students caught sharing lockers or locker combinations will be subject to administrative
disciplinary action. Lockers must be locked at all times. Students may use their lockers only during locker
allowance times.
LOST AND FOUND
Items that have been found are kept in the A-hall office for a period of time. If you have lost an item, come to the
A-hall office to retrieve that item. Items not claimed are donated to charity at the end of the school year.
12
PUPIL INFORMATION
It is the parent‟s responsibility to inform the school immediately if there is a change in address, telephone number,
place of employment, or emergency telephone number. This information is critical in times of emergency. We
will only release a student to a person listed on the Pupil Information Form.
STUDENT BULLETIN
The bulletin is read each morning via the intercom. Students are expected to listen to the morning bulletin to gain
information about the day, important information and activities.
STUDENT LEADERSHIP
A number of opportunities exist for students to become involved in leadership responsibilities at Coleman Middle
School. Below is a list of some of the leadership activities that students can participate in. For more information
call the school and ask for the sponsor of the program(s) you are interested in.
Student Council (STUCO)
Student Mentors
Cougar Delegates
TELEPHONE USE
The office telephone is a business phone and should not be used by students except for important matters during
the school day. Students who become ill may ask permission to see the nurse and may use the phone in the
nurse‟s office if necessary. Students are not allowed to use cellular phones at school.
TEXTBOOKS
Textbooks are furnished by the school district and are rented at the beginning of the year. A student who loses or
damages a book while it is checked out to him/her will be expected to pay for it within one week of the loss. A
replacement will be issued after payment has been made. It is the responsibility of the student to identify
upon issuance any damage to the textbook; otherwise, the student assumes responsibility for that
damage at the end of the year when books are returned.
The student‟s name and the teacher‟s name who issued the textbook MUST be inside the front of the book in the
designated area. This will facilitate return of lost or misplaced books.
VISITORS
Parents, guests, and visitors are to report to the E hall office when they enter the building. If they sign in to visit a
classroom, they will be given a visitors badge. Former students will not be allowed to visit school during the
school day. Students may not have a sibling or a student from another school visit or attend school with them.
WITHDRAWAL FROM SCHOOL
If a student is withdrawing from school, a parent should notify the office prior to the student‟s last day of
attendance. The student will carry a withdrawal (exit) card and check out with each teacher, the bookkeeper, and
the librarian. The student will need to return books to the appropriate teachers or to the office.
