The Annual Meeting of the IAWA Board of Advisors was called to order at 9:30 AM by Donna
Dunay, Chair/Director. She welcomed the Board and Visitors, reviewed the agendas and
explained the organization of both meetings, beginning with the Annual Meeting, which wraps
up the business of the previous year, and the Inaugural Meeting, which begins the business of
the next year.
1. Introduction of Board (Donna Dunay)
a. Marcia Feuerstein was appointed secretary of the Annual Meeting.
b. Roll Call was taken with five (5) proxies held by Chair to establish a quorum. Donna
Dunay discussed her meeting with advisors Solange d’Herbez de la Tour, Junko
Matsukawa-Tsuchida, and Ute Westrom during the UIFA Bucharest meeting
2. Approval of Agenda with Additions or Changes to Agenda:
Kristine Fallon moved to approve the agenda without changes or additions, Marcia
Feuerstein seconded the motion, no discussion, the motion was approved by the Board.
3. Minutes of 21 st Annual Meeting of 2006:
a. Approval
Donna Dunay called for a motion to approve the minutes of the annual meeting.
Kristine Fallon so moved, Marcia Feuerstein seconded, no discussion, the motion
was approved.
b. Business arising from the Minutes
There was no business arising from the Minutes.

4. Minutes of the Board of Advisors and Executive Committee 2006-2007.
a. Minutes of 22 nd Inaugural Meeting, 2006:
Kathleen C. Arceneaux asked for corrections – she was present at the meeting.
Kristine Fallon Moved to approve the minutes of the 22 nd Inaugural Meeting with
corrections, Kathleen C. Arceneaux seconded the motion, no discussion, the
motion was approved.
b. Minutes of the Executive Committee 2006-2007.
Kristine Fallon moved that the Executive Committee minutes be approved, Marcia
Feuerstein seconded the motion, no discussion, the minutes were approved.
5. Report of the Chair. (attached)
Donna Dunay thanked all, remembering, with sadness, the passing of honorary advisor
Lorenz Moser, a distinguished architect and Virginia Tech Professor.
6. Treasurer's Report: (attached) Donna Dunay gave the treasurer's report for treasurer Kay
Edge, who was unavailable. She indicated the amounts in IAWA Center CAUS accounts,
which include the Milka Bliznakov Endowment Income account and the Women's Archives –
Architecture account, describing income and revenues, along with expenses related to the
previous year's annual meeting. The College of Architecture and Urban Studies and the
School of Architecture + Design supported production of IAWA Newsletter, Annual `meeting
luncheon, IAWA GA support.
7. Committee Reports
a. Nomination and election report (Marcia Feuerstein): See attached “terms of service
and positions” and “IAWA Stakeholders : Current Positions October 2007.” Marcia
Feuerstein reported that all nominees were elected to 2007 – 2010 terms:
Off Campus:
Barbara Nadel re-elected;
Jennifer Gunter King, who was an honorary advisor, was elected to replace
outgoing advisor Gerri Schaad (2001 – 07). Ms King will no longer be an
honorary advisor.
On-Campus:
Donna Dunay was re-elected;
Lisa Tucker elected to replace outgoing advisor Marcia Feuerstein1(1998-07);
Bill Galloway elected to fill a vacant seat on the Board.
b. Newsletter (Kay Edge): Kay Edge was unable to attend the meeting.
The cover of No. 19 (Fall 2007) with an article by advisor Ochipureviin Sarantsatsral,
as well as completed newsletter No. 18 (Fall 2006) were made available to the Board
c. Collection Development (Donna Dunay)
Donna discussed the timeline map website as an on-going development tool, also
discussed in the Saturday working meeting (see notes) developed with Kay Edge
and others.
d. Bliznakov Prize: (Donna Dunay) see attached announcement
While a prize was not awarded, a commendation was given for research titled
“Against all Odds: MIT’s Pioneering Women of Landscape Architecture,” to Eran
Ben-Joseph, Holly D. Ben-Joseph, Anne C. Dodge.
e. Anniversary Celebration/Exhibit
Celebration of 3 decades of IAWA, suggestion by Dean Davis to open the
celebration internationally through digital exhibitions and end in Washington DC,

perhaps at National Building Museum. Discussed a need to coordinate with UIFA
conference. Marcia Feuerstein suggested that the format and content developed for
20 th anniversary be considered as a starting point. This was discussed in detail
during the Saturday Working Meeting.
8. Advisors Reports: past year’s activities
a. Martha Thorne: In presentation to the Chicago Women in Architecture (CWA) she
discussed the IAWA, which initiated the Natalie De Blois contribution. She also
challenged women to save, protect and donate their work to the IAWA.
b. Kristine Fallon: pursuing three collections
i. Natalie DeBlois, 86, worked for SOM for 40 years – NYC and Chicago, Associate
yet major work which was not recognized by recent book on SOM. Will come to
IAWA.
ii. Gunduz Dagdelen: Architect from Turkey, she studied sculpture, has 2
architecture degrees in USA, and is in practice with her husband. Hoping to
obtain an un-built residential project which was based on meditation and
symbolic aspects of Islam.
iii. Gerturde Lemp Kerbis, (mid 80s) Worked with Gropius, had an interest in long
span structures, and became one of the first architect-developer
c. Milka Bliznakov: Reminder of IAWA focus, personal contact important.
Created a list of women architects which is available to the Board
d. Bert Rodriguez: Distributed newsletter at various academic meetings. In contact
with Cesar Ruiz Larrea, a Spanish Architect with an interest assisting IAWA identify
and collect work from Spain.
e. Lois Gottlieb: brought work from House and House architects. Asked Archivist to
send a thank you note from the Library. Lois reiterated the importance of developing
relationship early when architects are still healthy and able to make decisions
regarding bequeathing or donating their work.
f. Dean Hitchingham described the library’s process of accepting and contacting
donors. The library creates a legal agreement regarding the transaction with the
owners of the works donated when the papers are officially accepted. This legal
document is sent to the owners of the work.
g. Gerrianne Schaad: See Saturday notes
h. Kathleen Arceneaux (KC): Member of executive committee, involved with legal
challenges of year, webpage design, visibility, links.
i. Ochirpureviin Saratsatsral: article on prizewinning Mongolian women architects for
Fall 2007 newsletter
j. Anna Sokolina: Ongoing collecting works of Russian Women Architects as well as
establishing a sister branch IAWA in Moscow, and added her won work to IAWA.
She is director of gallery at Miami University/Ohio, and will exhibit IAWA materials.
She collected eight albums of professional documentation by Anna Shchetinina,
head of the TERRA architecture studio in Moscow; as well as records and books
from Prof. Inessa Slyun’kova, Moscow architecture historian at the Russian
Academic Research Institute of Art Studies. Also the Department of Contemporary
Architecture of the Moscow Institute of Architecture (Prof. Irina Cheredina) is
interested in collaboration.
k. Donna: collected from UIFA: Japanese book of childhood houses of female
Japanese Architects, UIFA Japon newsletter, book on Romanian Architect Cristina

l. Marcia Feuerstein: Discussed
i. HABS project, identifying women architects from DC:
ii. Suman Sorg and Wilhemina Boldt, a local architect who began a design school
that is now part of Marymount University’s interior architecture program
iii. Congressional Club joint architecture/urban planning historic preservation/reuse
project. Only club created by act of congress for spouses of members of
congress, originally wives, it was a women’s social club, designed by George
Oakley Totten. Copies of report, drawings, and findings will be donated to IAWA.
iv.
9. Report of Archivist (Gail McMillan) (see http://spec.lib.vt.edu/IAWA/Archivist/2007ar.pdf)
a. $10,000 Beverly Willis matching with Dean Hitchingham for 1. IAWA website search
engine, 2. Enhance Biographical Database.
b. Publications: “Celebrate Research” by Association of Research Libraries includes
article about VT’s Special Collections and the IAWA with illustrations from Susanna
Torre’s work
c. Publicized in online resources – Wikipedia and WAAND, an online directory –
women artists, etc, and University publication, etc.
d. Dr. Aaron Purcell will be the new head of Special Collections and new archivist; split
from Digital Library and Archives. Gail will work with digital aspects, no longer as
IAWA archivist.
Dean Hitchingham discussed Dr. Purcell, who will be joining the Library in November.
Recognized Gail McMillan’s 12 years of service to the IAWA.
10. Report of Director of School of A + D, Scott Poole.
Recognized Donna Dunay’s efforts in helping to clarify the language to officially establish
the IAWA as an official center from a de-facto center. Discussed women in Finnish
architecture from the late 1800’s, including Aalto’s presence.
11. Report of Deans,
University Libraries (Eileen Hitchingham) see above.
CAUS (Jack Davis):
a. Encouraged each advisor to provide 3 web-links for the IAWA webpage.
b. Fundraising:
i. Sigrid Rupp Bequest: The University lost the bequest, he provided a copy of
the final dispensation by the California courts.
ii. Discussed the Capitol Campaign with a 26 million dollar target, which will
benefit IAWA with a number of endowments or fellowships. These will be
sought, but are not guaranteed, including an endowed professorship or
fellowship dedicated to the IAWA. This requires a 1 million dollar
(professorship) or $750,000 (fellowship) endowment and an endowed
operating fund. For instance, $100,000 would generate $5,000 a year for
publication of the newsletter and a guest speaker. More would be better but
those are the intentions;
iii. “Women of CAUSe” a college publication summary of current women faculty;
iv. Donna Dunay received the GT Ward Endowment.
12. New Business will be added to the next meeting.

13. Adjournment: Kristine Fallon moved to adjourn, Marcia Feuerstein seconded, discussion to
change the agenda and move #12, new business, to the inaugural meeting.
At 11:05 the Board voted to adjourn.
NOTE: Following the Annual Meeting, Special Collections’ Reading Room was opened to the
Board who reviewed a display of recent acquisitions prepared by Amy Vilelle and the newly
acquired drawings by House + House Architects, delivered by Lois Gottlieb.
