The <strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Meeting</strong> <strong>of</strong> the <strong>IAWA</strong> Board <strong>of</strong> Advisors was called to order at 9:30 AM by Donna<br />

Dunay, Chair/Director. She welcomed the Board <strong>and</strong> Visitors, reviewed the agendas <strong>and</strong><br />

explained the organization <strong>of</strong> both meetings, beginning with the <strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Meeting</strong>, which wraps<br />

up the business <strong>of</strong> the previous year, <strong>and</strong> the Inaugural <strong>Meeting</strong>, which begins the business <strong>of</strong><br />

the next year.<br />

1. Introduction <strong>of</strong> Board (Donna Dunay)<br />

a. Marcia Feuerstein was appointed secretary <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Meeting</strong>.<br />

b. Roll Call was taken with five (5) proxies held by Chair to establish a quorum. Donna<br />

Dunay discussed her meeting with advisors Solange d’Herbez de la Tour, Junko<br />

Matsukawa-Tsuchida, <strong>and</strong> Ute Westrom during the UIFA Bucharest meeting<br />

2. Approval <strong>of</strong> Agenda with Additions or Changes to Agenda:<br />

Kristine Fallon moved to approve the agenda without changes or additions, Marcia<br />

Feuerstein seconded the motion, no discussion, the motion was approved by the Board.<br />

3. Minutes <strong>of</strong> 21 st <strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Meeting</strong> <strong>of</strong> 2006:<br />

a. Approval<br />

Donna Dunay called for a motion to approve the minutes <strong>of</strong> the annual meeting.<br />

Kristine Fallon so moved, Marcia Feuerstein seconded, no discussion, the motion<br />

was approved.<br />

a. Minutes <strong>of</strong> 22 nd Inaugural <strong>Meeting</strong>, 2006:<br />

Kathleen C. Arceneaux asked for corrections – she was present at the meeting.<br />

Kristine Fallon Moved to approve the minutes <strong>of</strong> the 22 nd Inaugural <strong>Meeting</strong> with<br />

corrections, Kathleen C. Arceneaux seconded the motion, no discussion, the<br />

motion was approved.<br />

b. Minutes <strong>of</strong> the Executive Committee 2006-2007.<br />

Kristine Fallon moved that the Executive Committee minutes be approved, Marcia<br />

Feuerstein seconded the motion, no discussion, the minutes were approved.<br />

5. Report <strong>of</strong> the Chair. (attached)<br />

Donna Dunay thanked all, remembering, with sadness, the passing <strong>of</strong> honorary advisor<br />

Lorenz Moser, a distinguished architect <strong>and</strong> Virginia Tech Pr<strong>of</strong>essor.<br />

6. Treasurer's Report: (attached) Donna Dunay gave the treasurer's report for treasurer Kay<br />

Edge, who was unavailable. She indicated the amounts in <strong>IAWA</strong> Center CAUS accounts,<br />

which include the Milka Bliznakov Endowment Income account <strong>and</strong> the Women's Archives –<br />

<strong>Architecture</strong> account, describing income <strong>and</strong> revenues, along with expenses related to the<br />

previous year's annual meeting. The <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Architecture</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Urban</strong> <strong>Studies</strong> <strong>and</strong> the<br />

School <strong>of</strong> <strong>Architecture</strong> + Design supported production <strong>of</strong> <strong>IAWA</strong> Newsletter, <strong>Annual</strong> `meeting<br />

luncheon, <strong>IAWA</strong> GA support.<br />

7. Committee Reports<br />

a. Nomination <strong>and</strong> election report (Marcia Feuerstein): See attached “terms <strong>of</strong> service<br />

<strong>and</strong> positions” <strong>and</strong> “<strong>IAWA</strong> Stakeholders : Current Positions October 2007.” Marcia<br />

Feuerstein reported that all nominees were elected to 2007 – 2010 terms:<br />

Off Campus:<br />

Barbara Nadel re-elected;<br />

Jennifer Gunter King, who was an honorary advisor, was elected to replace<br />

outgoing advisor Gerri Schaad (2001 – 07). Ms King will no longer be an<br />

honorary advisor.<br />

On-Campus:<br />

Donna Dunay was re-elected;<br />

Lisa Tucker elected to replace outgoing advisor Marcia Feuerstein1(1998-07);<br />

Bill Galloway elected to fill a vacant seat on the Board.<br />

b. Newsletter (Kay Edge): Kay Edge was unable to attend the meeting.<br />

The cover <strong>of</strong> No. 19 (Fall 2007) with an article by advisor Ochipureviin Sarantsatsral,<br />

as well as completed newsletter No. 18 (Fall 2006) were made available to the Board<br />

c. Collection Development (Donna Dunay)<br />

Donna discussed the timeline map website as an on-going development tool, also<br />

discussed in the Saturday working meeting (see notes) developed with Kay Edge<br />

<strong>and</strong> others.<br />

d. Bliznakov Prize: (Donna Dunay) see attached announcement<br />

While a prize was not awarded, a commendation was given for research titled<br />

“Against all Odds: MIT’s Pioneering Women <strong>of</strong> L<strong>and</strong>scape <strong>Architecture</strong>,” to Eran<br />

Ben-Joseph, Holly D. Ben-Joseph, Anne C. Dodge.<br />

e. Anniversary Celebration/Exhibit<br />

Celebration <strong>of</strong> 3 decades <strong>of</strong> <strong>IAWA</strong>, suggestion by Dean Davis to open the<br />

celebration internationally through digital exhibitions <strong>and</strong> end in Washington DC,<br />

perhaps at National Building Museum. Discussed a need to coordinate with UIFA<br />

conference. Marcia Feuerstein suggested that the format <strong>and</strong> content developed for<br />

20 th anniversary be considered as a starting point. This was discussed in detail<br />

during the Saturday Working <strong>Meeting</strong>.<br />

8. Advisors Reports: past year’s activities<br />

a. Martha Thorne: In presentation to the Chicago Women in <strong>Architecture</strong> (CWA) she<br />

discussed the <strong>IAWA</strong>, which initiated the Natalie De Blois contribution. She also<br />

challenged women to save, protect <strong>and</strong> donate their work to the <strong>IAWA</strong>.<br />

b. Kristine Fallon: pursuing three collections<br />

i. Natalie DeBlois, 86, worked for SOM for 40 years – NYC <strong>and</strong> Chicago, Associate<br />

yet major work which was not recognized by recent book on SOM. Will come to<br />

<strong>IAWA</strong>.<br />

ii. Gunduz Dagdelen: Architect from Turkey, she studied sculpture, has 2<br />

architecture degrees in USA, <strong>and</strong> is in practice with her husb<strong>and</strong>. Hoping to<br />

obtain an un-built residential project which was based on meditation <strong>and</strong><br />

symbolic aspects <strong>of</strong> Islam.<br />

iii. Gerturde Lemp Kerbis, (mid 80s) Worked with Gropius, had an interest in long<br />

span structures, <strong>and</strong> became one <strong>of</strong> the first architect-developer<br />

c. Milka Bliznakov: Reminder <strong>of</strong> <strong>IAWA</strong> focus, personal contact important.<br />

Created a list <strong>of</strong> women architects which is available to the Board<br />

d. Bert Rodriguez: Distributed newsletter at various academic meetings. In contact<br />

with Cesar Ruiz Larrea, a Spanish Architect with an interest assisting <strong>IAWA</strong> identify<br />

<strong>and</strong> collect work from Spain.<br />

e. Lois Gottlieb: brought work from House <strong>and</strong> House architects. Asked Archivist to<br />

send a thank you note from the Library. Lois reiterated the importance <strong>of</strong> developing<br />

relationship early when architects are still healthy <strong>and</strong> able to make decisions<br />

regarding bequeathing or donating their work.<br />

f. Dean Hitchingham described the library’s process <strong>of</strong> accepting <strong>and</strong> contacting<br />

donors. The library creates a legal agreement regarding the transaction with the<br />

owners <strong>of</strong> the works donated when the papers are <strong>of</strong>ficially accepted. This legal<br />

document is sent to the owners <strong>of</strong> the work.<br />

g. Gerrianne Schaad: See Saturday notes<br />

h. Kathleen Arceneaux (KC): Member <strong>of</strong> executive committee, involved with legal<br />

challenges <strong>of</strong> year, webpage design, visibility, links.<br />

i. Ochirpureviin Saratsatsral: article on prizewinning Mongolian women architects for<br />

Fall 2007 newsletter<br />

j. Anna Sokolina: Ongoing collecting works <strong>of</strong> Russian Women Architects as well as<br />

establishing a sister branch <strong>IAWA</strong> in Moscow, <strong>and</strong> added her won work to <strong>IAWA</strong>.<br />

She is director <strong>of</strong> gallery at Miami University/Ohio, <strong>and</strong> will exhibit <strong>IAWA</strong> materials.<br />

She collected eight albums <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional documentation by Anna Shchetinina,<br />

head <strong>of</strong> the TERRA architecture studio in Moscow; as well as records <strong>and</strong> books<br />

from Pr<strong>of</strong>. Inessa Slyun’kova, Moscow architecture historian at the Russian<br />

Academic Research Institute <strong>of</strong> Art <strong>Studies</strong>. Also the Department <strong>of</strong> Contemporary<br />

<strong>Architecture</strong> <strong>of</strong> the Moscow Institute <strong>of</strong> <strong>Architecture</strong> (Pr<strong>of</strong>. Irina Cheredina) is<br />

interested in collaboration.<br />

k. Donna: collected from UIFA: Japanese book <strong>of</strong> childhood houses <strong>of</strong> female<br />

Japanese Architects, UIFA Japon newsletter, book on Romanian Architect Cristina<br />

Cociman,<br />

i. HABS project, identifying women architects from DC:<br />

ii. Suman Sorg <strong>and</strong> Wilhemina Boldt, a local architect who began a design school<br />

that is now part <strong>of</strong> Marymount University’s interior architecture program<br />

iii. Congressional Club joint architecture/urban planning historic preservation/reuse<br />

project. Only club created by act <strong>of</strong> congress for spouses <strong>of</strong> members <strong>of</strong><br />

congress, originally wives, it was a women’s social club, designed by George<br />

Oakley Totten. Copies <strong>of</strong> report, drawings, <strong>and</strong> findings will be donated to <strong>IAWA</strong>.<br />

iv.<br />

9. Report <strong>of</strong> Archivist (Gail McMillan) (see http://spec.lib.vt.edu/<strong>IAWA</strong>/Archivist/2007ar.pdf)<br />

a. $10,000 Beverly Willis matching with Dean Hitchingham for 1. <strong>IAWA</strong> website search<br />

engine, 2. Enhance Biographical Database.<br />

b. Publications: “Celebrate Research” by Association <strong>of</strong> Research Libraries includes<br />

article about VT’s Special Collections <strong>and</strong> the <strong>IAWA</strong> with illustrations from Susanna<br />

Torre’s work<br />

c. Publicized in online resources – Wikipedia <strong>and</strong> WAAND, an online directory –<br />

women artists, etc, <strong>and</strong> University publication, etc.<br />

d. Dr. Aaron Purcell will be the new head <strong>of</strong> Special Collections <strong>and</strong> new archivist; split<br />

from Digital Library <strong>and</strong> Archives. Gail will work with digital aspects, no longer as<br />

<strong>IAWA</strong> archivist.<br />

Dean Hitchingham discussed Dr. Purcell, who will be joining the Library in November.<br />

Recognized Gail McMillan’s 12 years <strong>of</strong> service to the <strong>IAWA</strong>.<br />

10. Report <strong>of</strong> Director <strong>of</strong> School <strong>of</strong> A + D, Scott Poole.<br />

Recognized Donna Dunay’s efforts in helping to clarify the language to <strong>of</strong>ficially establish<br />

the <strong>IAWA</strong> as an <strong>of</strong>ficial center from a de-facto center. Discussed women in Finnish<br />

architecture from the late 1800’s, including Aalto’s presence.<br />

11. Report <strong>of</strong> Deans,<br />

University Libraries (Eileen Hitchingham) see above.<br />

CAUS (Jack Davis):<br />

a. Encouraged each advisor to provide 3 web-links for the <strong>IAWA</strong> webpage.<br />

b. Fundraising:<br />

i. Sigrid Rupp Bequest: The University lost the bequest, he provided a copy <strong>of</strong><br />

the final dispensation by the California courts.<br />

ii. Discussed the Capitol Campaign with a 26 million dollar target, which will<br />

benefit <strong>IAWA</strong> with a number <strong>of</strong> endowments or fellowships. These will be<br />

sought, but are not guaranteed, including an endowed pr<strong>of</strong>essorship or<br />

fellowship dedicated to the <strong>IAWA</strong>. This requires a 1 million dollar<br />

(pr<strong>of</strong>essorship) or $750,000 (fellowship) endowment <strong>and</strong> an endowed<br />

operating fund. For instance, $100,000 would generate $5,000 a year for<br />

publication <strong>of</strong> the newsletter <strong>and</strong> a guest speaker. More would be better but<br />

those are the intentions;<br />

iii. “Women <strong>of</strong> CAUSe” a college publication summary <strong>of</strong> current women faculty;<br />

iv. Donna Dunay received the GT Ward Endowment.<br />

12. New Business will be added to the next meeting.<br />

13. Adjournment: Kristine Fallon moved to adjourn, Marcia Feuerstein seconded, discussion to<br />

change the agenda <strong>and</strong> move #12, new business, to the inaugural meeting.<br />

At 11:05 the Board voted to adjourn.<br />

NOTE: Following the <strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Meeting</strong>, Special Collections’ Reading Room was opened to the<br />

Board who reviewed a display <strong>of</strong> recent acquisitions prepared by Amy Vilelle <strong>and</strong> the newly<br />

acquired drawings by House + House Architects, delivered by Lois Gottlieb.<br />
