2
why you need
a dehumidifier
Whenever you take a bath or a shower, boil a kettle, use an
iron, wash the dishes or do laundry, you build up the moisture
levels in your home. Even something as simple as breathing
creates extra moisture.
If your home is well insulated, like most are, this excess
moisture can’t escape and will spread throughout your
home and settle in colder areas.
so what?
You might think that the worst that can happen is a little
condensation on your windows and a spot of mould on your
walls. Not true. Condensation in external walls will eventually
degrade wall ties and brickwork.
Even worse, your health could suffer. That’s because dust mites,
mould, bacteria and fungi also thrive in humid conditions,
causing serious problems for anyone with asthma, arthritis,
rheumatism, and allergies.
3
caused by
excess humidity...
1 condensation Excess moisture from cooking, washing, plants and even people can
create condensation in your home. In fact, 62% of all homes, including
modern and new buildings, are affected by condensation. Double glazing helps, but doesn’t
solve the completely as excess moisture is pushed into wall cavities instead of
collecting on windows. Left untreated, condensation can cause many, many problems.
2 damp There are several kinds of damp, from simple patches on walls and floors to
more serious cases of rising damp. Left untreated damp can cause many
structural to your home or even health problems.
internal damp This is usually caused by the occupants’ lifestyles, rather than a defect with
the property. Lack of ventilation, drying clothes, cooking and showering are the main causes.
penetrating damp Penetrating damp is caused by moisture which penetrates from
outside, through the roof or walls of your house.
rising damp Moisture from the ground rises by capillary action up the walls. Internal
decorations are stained and damaged, while plaster can de-bond and become loose.
mould Mould growth is only possible when moisture is prevalent. Mould can smell and
attach itself to almost any substance causing damage.
3 hidden damage Erosion is unknown to many people and is the hidden cost of
excess moisture in your home. Over the year’s changes to home
construction have made new homes, and modernised older homes, almost ‘air tight’, so the
excess moisture is forced into the walls and structures. Once there, it causes untold damage
which means it’s by far the most severe problem associated with excess humidity.
4+problems
dust mites
Too small to see without a microscope or strong magnifying glass,
dust mites quietly lurk under our beds, inside sofas and amongst the
fibres in our carpets. They feed on dead skin that falls from our bodies and live their whole
lives in dark corners: hatching, growing, eating, defecating, mating and laying eggs.
However, while you can find house dust mites virtually everywhere - a typical bed mattress
may contain anything from 100,000 to 2 million mites – they thrive in excess humidity.
5 arthritis There is a lot of evidence to show that people who suffer from arthritis feel
better and experience less discomfort in warm and dry conditions.
A home with lots of condensation and damp patches can often feel ‘chillier’, which could
potentially aggravate arthritis.
4
excess humidity
...and the solution!
a dehumidifier can:
1
prevent permanent damage to your home
from condensation, damp and mould
2
create a warmer, drier and healthier
environment for you and your family
3
ease the symptoms of arthritis and make sufferers feel
better by removing ‘chills’ from the air
4
improve the health of asthma and allergy sufferers by
reducing dust mites, bacteria and fungi
5
help you dry your laundry quicker than ever
6
save you money on your heating and fuel bills
5
choosing a dehumidifier
the independent view says…
noise levels
how do we measure up?
Noise is important. For example, if you leave your
dehumidifier running during the night, you may
hear it when you are trying to sleep. The higher the
performance of a dehumidifier the more noise it
will make. Some units can be run on low fan which
reduces noise levels, but also reduces water extraction.
We only use high quality components and
manufacturing processes to ensure our dehumidifiers
are amongst the quietest on the market at around
40Db, as quiet as a library.
price
Price is obviously a key factor. You need to ensure you
are only paying for the features you need and that the
running costs are at a reasonable level. A product that
costs less initially may cost substantially more to run
over its lifetime. Plus, lower cost products will not last
as long as higher quality products.
£
We have a range of products to suit every budget, and
our running costs are amongst the best in the industry.
product lifespan
Internal and external quality is important in a longlasting
product, so ensure you look at the finish
and quality of all the components, doors, water
containers of the product. This will give a good
indication to how durable and long lasting it will be.
Q
lasting product
quality components
We expect the lifespan of an Ebac dehumidifier
to be around 10 years as long as you take good
care of the product.
size and shape
When it comes to design, you would probably use a
different model in a hallway, than in an outside garage.
The size of your home matters, too, and, if you live in a
bungalow, we recommend that you purchase the next
model up – ie, choose a dehumidifier suitable for a 3
bedroom home if you have a 2 bedroom bungalow,
as this type of home tends to more susceptible to
moisture than 2 storey houses.
From sleek modern designs to a more traditional
look, and in a range of sizes to suit every home,
we have the best range on the market.
6
When it comes to choosing a dehumidifier, there are lots of options available to you.
So, here’s our guide to making sure you select the one that suits you and your home best.
the independent view says…
how do we measure up?
room temperature and humidity
Heating disguises moisture, it does not remove it.
Moisture hidden in warm air reappears when the
heating goes off or it moves to unheated spaces
where it creates an environment ideal for mould.
Unheated rooms are the best for extracting
excess moisture.
Many dehumidifiers are built for operation in heated
spaces, like your home in the winter. They are
designed to freeze internally when operating
normally, as this helps the water extraction process.
All dehumidifiers therefore need a defrost system
to ensure it continues to operate. A good defrost
system can significantly improve efficiency.
defrost
ease of use
Our dehumidifiers are designed to work at optimum
levels in the UK. For example, they are efficient at
extracting moisture from temperate rooms – such
as a room during a UK winter.
We’ve developed a patented intelligent defrost
system on smart models which constantly measures
the temperature of the refrigeration circuit
automatically adjusting the length and frequency of
defrost to maximise efficiency.
As technology advances, ease of use is a very
important consideration. Most dehumidifier buyers
want simple, easy to use products. However, most
dehumidifiers have to be operated manually
through the use of a humidistat which checks the
humidity level and switches on and off as required.
30 minutes
last 24hours
We have a new system called Smart Control that
removes the need for constant, manual operation.
Smart Control automatically records and
monitors humidity levels and regulates the
humidity based on these readings.
filters/other features
Some dehumidifiers have improved air filters to
help remove pollen and odours as well as general
dust. Some models also have a continuous fan/air
purifying mode, which means the fan can be
used even if the dehumidifier is not extracting
moisture. This provides a cooling effect and
air filtration during the summer.
customer service
We offer a range of filters including pollen,
tobacco and airborne bacteria filters.
Ensure you are able to contact customer service
should you have any questions or issues with your
product. Some manufacturers base their support
overseas, which makes it harder for their customers
to communicate with them.
Our customer support is 100% based in the UK.
smart control the unique way
to extract moisture
For any other dehumidifier to work efficiently, you would need to constantly re-adjust it
throughout the day. An Ebac dehumidifier with our innovative Smart Control does it all
for you.
The level of relative humidity in your home isn’t constant throughout any day or even
from day to day. It’s influenced by your lifestyle and by the weather conditions outside
your home. Both of these factors make it impossible to have an optimum relative
humidity throughout the day.
So, if you really wanted to get the most out of an ordinary dehumidifier, you would
need to adjust it several times a day to cope with all of these different levels of relative
humidity. And that’s not practical if you’re out at work, or busy with the kids all day.
But to get the most out of an Ebac dehumidifier with Smart Control, all you need to do is
switch it on – and forget about it. That’s because Smart Control automatically re-adjusts
itself every thirty minutes leaving you free to spend your time however you like.
how does smart control work?
last24hours
30 minutes
Every thirty minutes, Smart Control automatically
monitors, records and compares the level of
relative humidity in your home and stores all
measurements for 24 hours. So, if you normally
have a shower at 8am each morning, Smart
Control will know about it. If your home is
generally empty from 8.45 am until 6pm,
Smart Control can take care of it. If you always
have the heating on for three hours in the
evening, Smart Control can have that covered,
too. Even when these times, or the outside
weather changes it immediately re-adjusts and
you’ll never catch it out.
Smart Control learns about how you, your
family, your home and the weather all interact.
8
It only removes moisture from the air when it
needs to; making it much more efficient than an
ordinary dehumidifier, ensuring your home is never
too dry or too moist – whatever the conditions.
designed for the
great British climate
The weather outside your home has a huge effect on the relative
humidity inside.
And we all know, only too well, that the British weather can never
be described as ordinary.
In fact, our weather constantly changes from being fairly hot to
being reasonably cold – and from being quite dry, to being
exceptionally wet. What’s more, changes like this can often happen
in the space of a few days, or even just a few hours.
That’s why we don’t ‘just’ make dehumidifiers. Our products have
been designed to work at their best in our constantly changing
weather and at temperatures up to 30°C– unlike many other
dehumidifiers that are designed for the weather found in other
countries with different weather patterns and higher temperatures.
...by a great British company
Ebac are a British owned and based manufacturing company based in the North of England.
customer service.
Ebac’s principals are to provide high quality products with the latest technology at a fair price.
For over 30 years Ebac have been working towards this objective.
Quite simply, Ebac has to be considered as the dehumidifier experts in the European market.
for yourself!
try it free for 28 days –
you won’t believe the difference
We’re so sure that you, your family and your home will benefit from an Ebac
dehumidifier that we’ll let you try it absolutely free – and without obligation
– for 28 days. Here’s what most people discover during their trial period.
after a few days…
…you’ll be surprised at just how much excess moisture the unit removes
from inside your home. The average family can produce up to 20 pints a day
– just imagine how much damage that will cause through time.
If there’s anyone in your family who suffers from asthma or allergies, they’ll
start to notice a real difference. That’s because as soon as you reduce the
relative humidity there will be fewer irritating dust mites and fungi around
your home.
You’ll also realise how quiet your Ebac dehumidifier is. We recommend
placing it in your hallway, where it can access the air throughout the home.
after a week or two…
…you’ll find that your home feels drier and warmer. You could even try
turning your heating down – or simply have it on for a shorter period each
day, which could save you money on your fuel bills. In fact, setting your central
heating thermostat just 1ºC lower can reduce your heating costs by 10%.
If there are any arthritis or rheumatism sufferers in your family, this drier,
warmer environment will already be much more comfortable for them.
after 28 days…
…your home will now provide a healthier environment all round – and all
members of your family should be able to feel the difference. Mould growth is
prevented and musty smells in little-used rooms should have disappeared,
and you will notice that there is now little or no mildew in your bathroom.
