why you need
a dehumidifier
Whenever you take a bath or a shower, boil a kettle, use an
iron, wash the dishes or do laundry, you build up the moisture
levels in your home. Even something as simple as breathing
creates extra moisture.
If your home is well insulated, like most are, this excess
moisture can’t escape and will spread throughout your
home and settle in colder areas.
so what?
You might think that the worst that can happen is a little
condensation on your windows and a spot of mould on your
walls. Not true. Condensation in external walls will eventually
degrade wall ties and brickwork.
Even worse, your health could suffer.That’s because dust mites,
mould, bacteria and fungi also thrive in humid conditions,
causing serious problems for anyone with asthma, arthritis,
rheumatism, and allergies.

1 condensation Excess moisture from cooking, washing, plants and even people can
create condensation in your home. In fact, 62% of all homes, including
modern and new buildings, are affected by condensation. Double glazing helps, but doesn’t
solve the completely as excess moisture is pushed into wall cavities instead of
collecting on windows. Left untreated, condensation can cause many, many problems.
2 damp There are several kinds of damp, from simple patches on walls and floors to
more serious cases of rising damp. Left untreated damp can cause many
structural to your home or even health problems.
internal damp This is usually caused by the occupants’ lifestyles, rather than a defect with
the property. Lack of ventilation, drying clothes, cooking and showering are the main causes.
penetrating damp Penetrating damp is caused by moisture which penetrates from
outside, through the roof or walls of your house.
rising damp Moisture from the ground rises by capillary action up the walls. Internal
decorations are stained and damaged, while plaster can de-bond and become loose.
mould Mould growth is only possible when moisture is prevalent. Mould can smell and
attach itself to almost any substance causing damage.
3 hidden damage Erosion is unknown to many people and is the hidden cost of
excess moisture in your home. Over the year’s changes to home
construction have made new homes, and modernised older homes, almost ‘air tight’, so the
excess moisture is forced into the walls and structures. Once there, it causes untold damage
which means it’s by far the most severe problem associated with excess humidity.

Too small to see without a microscope or strong magnifying glass,
dust mites quietly lurk under our beds, inside sofas and amongst the
fibres in our carpets.They feed on dead skin that falls from our bodies and live their whole
lives in dark corners: hatching, growing, eating, defecating, mating and laying eggs.
However, while you can find house dust mites virtually everywhere - a typical bed mattress
may contain anything from 100,000 to 2 million mites – they thrive in excess humidity.

how do we measure up?
Noise is important. For example, if you leave your
dehumidifier running during the night, you may
hear it when you are trying to sleep.The higher the
performance of a dehumidifier the more noise it
will make. Some units can be run on low fan which
reduces noise levels, but also reduces water extraction.

model up – ie, choose a dehumidifier suitable for a 3

Heating disguises moisture, it does not remove it.
Moisture hidden in warm air reappears when the
heating goes off or it moves to unheated spaces
where it creates an environment ideal for mould.
Unheated rooms are the best for extracting
excess moisture.
Many dehumidifiers are built for operation in heated
spaces, like your home in the winter.They are
designed to freeze internally when operating
normally, as this helps the water extraction process.
All dehumidifiers therefore need a defrost system
to ensure it continues to operate. A good defrost

The level of relative humidity in your home isn’t constant throughout any day or even
from day to day. It’s influenced by your lifestyle and by the weather conditions outside
your home. Both of these factors make it impossible to have an optimum relative
humidity throughout the day.
So, if you really wanted to get the most out of an ordinary dehumidifier, you would
need to adjust it several times a day to cope with all of these different levels of relative
humidity. And that’s not practical if you’re out at work, or busy with the kids all day.

measurements for 24 hours. So, if you normally
have a shower at 8am each morning, Smart
Control will know about it. If your home is
generally empty from 8.45 am until 6pm,
Smart Control can take care of it. If you always
have the heating on for three hours in the
evening, Smart Control can have that covered,
too. Even when these times, or the outside
weather changes it immediately re-adjusts and
you’ll never catch it out.
