College Profile
What is the College of Mount St. Joseph educational experience? It’s learning through action – serving
others, graduate-level research, paid co-op positions, and leadership development. It’s a Catholic liberal
arts education that helps you develop the knowledge to make a difference and the integrity to lead
others. Students with a liberal arts education seek to challenge, explore, and uncover. The Mount can
help you do just that.
The foundation of a Mount education comes from career-minded academic programs combined with
dedicated support service and a 12:1 student-to-faculty ratio. New on campus this year is a major in
neuroscience and a minor in Catholic studies.
At the Mount, you’re encouraged to take your lessons outside of the classroom, into the community.
Through the Service Learning program, students earn academic credit while volunteering to feed the
hungry, building homes for Habitat for Humanity, or comforting the elderly. The Cultural Immersion
program offers the chance to live, learn and work amidst other cultures. The Cooperative Education
program, available for all majors, is a way for students to gain valuable, paid career experience while
validating their choice of a major.
Student-athletes are among the Mount’s most active leaders on campus. Competing in the Heartland
Collegiate Athletic conference, the Mount fields more than 20 NCAA Division III sports teams. Students
also participate in 40 student-run clubs and organizations including Student Government Association and
Black Student Union.
The Mount is committed to working with students to explore all financial aid options, especially
eligibility for financial assistance including scholarships. In 2011-2012, 97% of undergraduate students
received some sort of gift aid; more than $12.5 million in grants and scholarships were received
by Mount students.
Cincinnati Spotlights
Students of the College of Mount St. Joseph greatly benefit from the
rich heritage and traditions of Cincinnati. While the College is situated
15 minutes west of downtown, employment, arts and entertainment
are never too far away.
Numerous Fortune 500 and Fortune 1000 companies are headquartered in
Cincinnati. Procter & Gamble, The Kroger Company, and Fifth Third Bank,
among others, contribute to Cincinnati’s foundation while Cincinnati
Children’s Hospital Medical Center is among the nations’ top children’s
hospitals. Mount Cooperative Education students are hired by more
than 100 hospitals, businesses and nonprofit organizations of
Greater Cincinnati.
Boasting a vibrant commitment to the arts, Cincinnatians enjoy
the Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati Art Museum, Aronoff Center,
Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Music Hall, and a varied supply of art
galleries. Mount students often incorporate Cincinnati’s art exhibits and
performances into their studies.
Cincinnati knows sports. The Cincinnati Reds, the Major League Baseball
team, and the Cincinnati Bengals, of the National Football League, provide
competition, entertainment and emotion for the city’s sports fans. Co-op
COLLEGE OF MOUNT ST. JOSEPH
Mission in Action
The College of Mount St. Joseph is a Catholic academic community
grounded in the spiritual values and vision of its founders, the Sisters
of Charity. At the heart of the Mount’s mission and heritage is an
emphasis on ethical leadership through service. Ethical leadership
celebrates the return of virtue, character and personal honor to their
rightful place as the foundation of education. This commitment inspires
the College’s interdisciplinary liberal arts and professional curricula, which
equips students to live with integrity, to promote justice, and to seek the
truth in their professions and communities.
Service opportunities complement academics and student life while
fostering a culture of learning informed by charity. In the Service Learning
Program, students apply classroom knowledge while volunteering in social
and environmental settings to feed the hungry, build homes for Habitat for
Humanity and comfort the elderly. The Cultural Immersion program offers
the chance to live, learn and work amidst other cultures. In serving others,
students cultivate a greater understanding of social problems, an appreciation
for the cultural diversity of other people, as well as a commitment to
volunteerism and an understanding of its connection to citizenship.
Campus Ministry infuses all aspects of faith into the Mount’s culture and
celebrates spiritual exploration. Faith sharing programs, Mass, retreats, and
other planned events help awaken and deepen an awareness of God’s love
and presence within the campus community. Inspired by Catholic social
teaching, Campus Ministry encourages students to identify their gifts and
to use them for the common good through activities such as Pizza and
Ponder, Homelessness Awareness Week, and 30-Hour Famine.

2012 Season Outlook
Leah Todd returns for her fourth season as the Head Coach of the
Lions’ women’s soccer team this fall and she and her team will try to
get back to the conference tournament after not getting there for the
first time since 2003. The team has set some lofty goals for the 2012
season.
“To quote most of the players, they said they’re goal this season
is to get a ring,’’ Todd exclaims. “In order to do that we have to win
the HCAC regular season and beyond that we have to win the HCAC
Tournament. To be in a position to win the HCAC we have to have
success in our non-conference play and then once we get into HCAC
play I would like to see us go 7-2 and then obviously go 2-0 in the
tournament.”
Todd is excited about the 2012 team and expects big things, but
knows that nothing will be given to them. Todd says all of the playing
spots will be earned in the pre-season, and no one is guaranteed a
starting position. This creates an environment where everyone has to
work hard, which in turn will make everyone better.
The 2011 team only had two seniors, but the 2012 team has six
seniors which Todd believes will help with leadership on the field.
Those seniors have been through lots of ups and downs, according to
Todd, and she feels that has made them a unified group ready to lead
on the field and in the locker room for their final season. Along with
the six senior returners, and other talented returning players, the Lions
have added ten new freshmen and multiple transfers.
“There are several players coming in that I am looking at to make an
immediate impact.’’ Todd says. “We also have several transfer players
that will be important to our success this year.”
After scoring less than one goal a game last year, Todd has changed
the team’s offensive formation, and along with improved play, the
Mount’s leader is expecting more goals to be scored this year. The
Lions return three of their top four scorer’s from last year in forward
Taylor Hudepohl (five goals last year), midfielder Brittany Bowman
(three goals last year), and forward Jessica Pykosz (two goals last
year). Bowman and Pykosz are seniors, while Hudepohl is a junior.
good defense. They allowed only 40 goals in 18 games last fall. The
Lions return 2011 First Team All-HCAC member Lauren Bishnow, a
junior, to anchor the defense. She is coming off a season where she
played in 16 of the 18 games. Also back for the Lions is Second Team
All-Conference goalkeeper Shelbi Benzinger. Benzinger is second alltime
in saves for the Lions, and looks to provide leadership in goal
this year. She will be pushed for playing time by returner sophomore
Madison Freeman and a freshman player.
Other seniors on this season’s team are: midfielder/forward Jenna
Shull, defender/midfielder Kayla Cornette, and defender Ann Marie
Middendorf. Six junior players also dot this season’s roster.
“The HCAC has become stronger this season and the top teams in
the conference aren’t separated by much,’’ Todd adds. “Every game will
be a challenge and any team can win any of them.’’
Senior Midfielder/Forward Jenna Shull competes for the ball in 2011 action as teammate Kelsey Carpenter looks on.
Mount in the HCAC
This season marks the Mount’s 15th season of action in the Heartland
Collegiate Athletic Conference. While a member of the conference, the
Lions have been an HCAC power, competing against Anderson University,
Bluffton University, Defiance College, Earlham College, Franklin College,
Hanover College, Manchester College, Rose-Hulman Institute of
Technology, and Transylvania University. Their overall record during their
time spent in the conference is 88-24-7. This mark includes six outright
conference titles and one shared HCAC title. The Lions hold a winning
record against seven of the nine conference opponents, including
undefeated marks against Anderson (18-0) and Franklin (16-0).
In 1998, the Lions first year in the HCAC, the Mount and Wilmington
were co-champions with a record of 5-1-1. There was not a conference
tournament that year, but many Mount players were recognized
for outstanding achievement. Three players were named First Team
AllConference, one player was named Second Team All-Conference, Mandy
Blazer was co-MVP of the conference, and Head Coach Sam Pogoni was
named Coach of the Year.
The Lions placed second in the regular season with a 5-1 record in
1999, falling just short to Wilmington, who compiled a 6-0 mark. In
the HCAC Tournament, the Mount went 3-0, defeating Wilmington by a
1-0 score, giving the Lions the tournament championship. Many Mount
players were acknowledge for their accomplishments in 1999 as three
players were named First Team All-Conference and one player received an
Honorable Mention award.
In 2000, the Lions swept the conference 6-0 and won the season end
tournament. They went 2-0 in the tournament defeating Anderson 5-0
in the championship. As in previous years, the Mount had a number of
players receive awards. Lisa Sutton was named Player of the Year. Sutton
and two other players were named First Team All-Conference and two
players were named Second Team All-Conference.
In 2001, the Mount placed second behind an undefeated Transylvania
team in regular season play with 5-1 record, but fought back to win the
conference championship to qualify for the NCAA Division III Regional
Tournament. The Lions again received many honors including three
All-Conference nominees. In addition, Lisa Sutton was also awarded
Academic All-Conference Academic AllDistrict, NSCAA All-Ohio, and
Conference Player of the Week twice. Jill Miller was also an HCAC Player
of the Week honoree and Sam Pogoni was named Coach of the Year.
The Lions won five of seven games in the conference in 2002 (with
one tie against defending regular season champion Transylvania).
The team’s lone setback in regular season play came by a 1-0 score at
Hanover College. The Mount avenged that loss by defeating the Panthers
2-0 in the conference championship game. Mount players, Erin Fox, Erin
Mallory and Lindsay Doll were named All-Conference. The Lions slipped a
bit in conference play during the 2003 season but still compiled a .500
record with a 3-3-1 record. That record left them in fifth place tie with
Defiance, as they missed qualifying to the post-season HCAC Tournament
for the first time ever. The Mount scored the second most goals in
conference-only games. Michele Philips was selected All-Conference
honors.
After a one-year absence from the HCAC Tournament, the Mount
returned to conference post-season competition in 2004, but dropped
a 1-0 double overtime game to eventual HCAC Tournament champion
Manchester. The Lions’ defense posted three shutouts in conference
play, and qualified to the HCAC Tournament by blanking Bluffton, 6-0,
collecting the third seed in the tournament. A conference-tying best
total of five players received All-Conference recognition: Margie Pfiester,
Jessey Spradlin, Lori Sullivan, Michele Phillips, and Sarah Lamping.
Over the course of the 2005 season, the Mount compiled a record of
13-6-2, including a 5-0-2 HCAC record, and steamed rolled to yet another
conference championship. Leading the way for the Lions in 2005 was
Jessey Spradlin, who tallied nine goals in conference games and was
named the HCAC Most Valuable Player. Other players receiving First Team
All-Conference recognition were Sandy Rack, Katie Henlein, Michele
Phillips, Kristi Poling, and Amanda Hauck. Hauck had an HCAC best four
shutouts in conference play. Head Coach Carrie Taylor was named HCAC
Coach of the Year.
The Lions recorded another stellar season of play in the HCAC during
the 2006 campaign, when they rolled to a 7-1 record, good for second
place in the conference. The Mount out-scored their opponents 41-5
in HCAC play. The Lions defeated Rose-Hulman in the first round of the
HCAC Tournament, 3-1 but fell in the conference championship game
to Transylvania by an identical score. Jessey Spradlin, who led the
conference in points per game, and goals, and was tied for second in
assists, was voted HCAC Most Valuable Player for the second straight
season. She also won three Conference Player of the Week awards. Mount
teammates Katie Henlein, Beth Schuermann and Sarah Thaxton were
among the offensive statistical leaders while Becky Thaxton was second
