presence of the oil scrap metal corresponds to the location of explorations with highest
concentrations of SVOCs, aromatic VOCs (RF-HAB108-MW, RF-HA110-MW, RF-HA119,
RF-HA207-MW and RF-HA208-MW) as well as those with the most significant groundwater
impacts (RF-HAB108-MW).
Chlorinated pesticides were detected in shallow soil samples from a number of shallow test
borings at Rochford Field at concentrations below RSR criteria. The samples containing the
pesticide compounds were collected from depths of less than 2 ft below grade, generally within
earthen fill material or in shallow samples of industrial or miscellaneous fill immediately
underlying impacted earthen fill samples. The pesticides are likely the result of historic
maintenance of the field or were present when the material was originally brought to the site
and do not appear to be associated with the industrial waste, miscellaneous or domestic refuse
fill material.
Results of groundwater monitoring have detected compounds similar to those found in the fill
materials (Tables IIa and IIb). Considering the widespread and elevated concentrations of
SVOCs in the fill deposits, minimal detections of SVOCs have been noted in groundwater and
those detections have been limited to two wells (RF-HA108-MW and RF-HA123-MW).
Aromatic VOCs have been detected in some groundwater samples from the northern and
northwestern portion of the site but concentrations have not exceeded applicable RSR criteria.
Concentrations of arsenic, lead, copper, mercury, thallium and zinc have also been detected in
excess of RSR criteria at one or more sampling locations and sampling events. The source of
the groundwater impacts is likely the industrial and miscellaneous fill deposits, including slag,
cinders and scrap metal, encountered throughout the Rochford Field parcel.
