Dear Parents,<br />

<strong>The</strong> 2012-2013 school year promises to be a wonderful year for your children and for <strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>School</strong>.<br />

You are your children’s most important teachers, and together we will help them grow in their commitment to<br />

the Gospel message. I am proud to lead our National Blue Ribbon <strong>School</strong> of Excellence which is rooted in<br />

faith, academic excellence, and service.<br />

In October, Pope Benedict XVI will proclaim 2012-2013 as the Year of Faith. Throughout the upcoming year,<br />

our school community will have numerous opportunities to explore, enrich, and proclaim our <strong>Catholic</strong><br />

faith…..truly sharing the Spirit of <strong>Seton</strong>! Thank you for your support and cooperation as we work together to<br />

provide for the spiritual, academic, social, and emotional needs of the students of <strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>School</strong>.<br />

To help and guide us in these efforts, the following handbook has been developed. It contains those policies,<br />

rules, guidelines and suggestions that we feel complement our mission and function as a <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>School</strong>. We<br />

believe the procedures and guidelines contained herein are responsible and appropriate, and we believe they will<br />

enhance the spiritual, educational and social experiences of our students.<br />

It is essential that you review the contents of this handbook and discuss it with your child/ren. Changes and<br />

additions to the 2012-2013 Handbook are noted in the Table of Contents. Please complete and sign the<br />

Educational and Conduct Contract verifying you have read and agree to abide by the contents of the 2012-2013<br />

<strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>School</strong> Family Handbook. Please return the form to school by Friday, August 24, 2012.<br />

Dear Parents,<br />

Each academic year at <strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>School</strong> a meaningful new theme is introduced that unifies and enriches<br />

our vibrant community. <strong>The</strong> Year of Faith is our 2012-13 theme and our national initiative: <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>School</strong>s<br />

Raise the Standards will not only be the hallmark of our <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>School</strong>s Week but also our guiding message.<br />

<strong>Seton</strong> has evolved into a school of size, stature, significance, and spirit. Mrs. Alestock, throughout her first year<br />

as Principal, has advanced that progress with noticeable improvements and we entrust another great year to her<br />

leadership. We welcome talented new members to our faculty and staff and look forward to a faith-filled<br />

experience.<br />

It is an honor to serve as Chairman of the <strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>School</strong> Board of Directors. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Seton</strong> Board is<br />

comprised of community leaders who have the spiritual and academic growth of your children as their top<br />

priority. This group of volunteers is intent on enhancing the learning experience at <strong>Seton</strong>. We achieve this by<br />

providing support to the administration. It is our responsibility to oversee the finances and facilities, and<br />

provide operational expertise. If you have questions about the function of the board, feel free to ask one of the<br />

members.<br />

I am pleased to present our 2012-13 Family Handbook. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Seton</strong> administration has made several updates that<br />

clarify policies and procedures. Our handbook aligns with the policy of the <strong>Catholic</strong> Diocese of Cleveland.<br />

Inspired by Saint Elizabeth Ann <strong>Seton</strong> and rooted in our <strong>Catholic</strong><br />

faith, <strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>School</strong> fosters spiritual development,<br />

academic excellence, responsibility to self, and service to others.<br />

ADMISSION AND REGISTRATION<br />

POLICY AND PROCEDURES<br />

<strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>School</strong> of Hudson recruits and admits students of any race, color,<br />

gender, or ethnic origin to all its rights, privileges, programs, and activities made<br />

available to all students.<br />

Children are eligible for admission to attend <strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>School</strong> according to the<br />

following criteria.<br />

1. All legacies, regardless of faith orientation, will be admitted unless there is<br />

some question, due to special needs, that would prohibit us serving them.<br />

2. Students who are Roman <strong>Catholic</strong> and are registered, participating<br />

parishioners of a <strong>Catholic</strong> Church.<br />

3. If we cannot accommodate all new Roman <strong>Catholic</strong> students, those<br />

students living in a community that does not have a <strong>Catholic</strong> elementary<br />

school will be considered over students residing in communities that have a<br />

<strong>Catholic</strong> elementary school.<br />

4. Non-<strong>Catholic</strong> applicants.<br />

In conformity with the State of Ohio standards, a child must be five (5) years old by<br />

September 30th to enter Kindergarten. Each Kindergarten applicant will be scheduled<br />

to attend a screening process which is not an “entrance exam,” but a tool to help the<br />

teachers better understand the child and to help guide the child’s readiness to start<br />

school. A family and principal meeting completes the admission process.<br />

Re-enrollment<br />

Re-enrollment for current <strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>School</strong> students (K-7) will be held at the<br />

beginning of the second semester for the next school year.<br />

Registration<br />

Registration of new students (K-8) for the 2013-14 school year will be held at the<br />

beginning of the second semester.<br />

<strong>The</strong> school is staffed by lay teachers and religious. All members of the staff have the<br />

proper training and certification to fulfill their roles as educators.<br />

ABSENCE<br />

According to state law, parents shall notify the school the morning of the day of a<br />

student’s absence. Parents who do not call in a child’s absence by 9:00 a.m. will be<br />

called by the school. Please notify the school nurse or health aide if the illness is<br />

contagious. If a contagious outbreak occurs in the school, you will be notified by letter.<br />

Acceptable reasons for absence include personal illness, medical and dental<br />

appointments, death in the family, quarantine, or other family emergencies. <strong>The</strong>se<br />

times away from school will be marked as absences. Students arriving at school after<br />

10:00 a.m. or leaving before 2:00 p.m. are considered absent for ½ day.<br />

In the case of an excessive number of absences (seven per quarter), a letter will be<br />

mailed home notifying parents. This notification serves as a reminder that the child<br />

may be considered for non-promotion due to the extreme number of absences. In<br />

order for a quality learning experience to take place, the child needs to be present in<br />

school.<br />

If your child is absent and you would like to request missed school work, please make<br />

this request at the time the absence call is placed. This will allow a reasonable amount<br />

of time for the teacher to gather books and assignments. Parents may pick up the<br />

school work between 3:30 and 4:00 p.m. in the school office.<br />

Students are responsible for making up all work missed because of absence. <strong>The</strong><br />

teacher will help, but it is the duty of the student to seek it and be willing to put in the<br />

extra time. A reasonable amount of time for make-up work is equal to the number of<br />

days absent.<br />

If at all possible, appointments with doctors and dentists should be made outside<br />

school hours. When necessary, students may be excused from classes at the written<br />

request of the parents.<br />

Parent/guardian must come to the office and sign the child in or out of school.<br />

TARDINESS<br />

Because tardiness interferes with the child’s progress in school and disrupts classroom<br />

teaching, parents are requested to help their children cultivate the habit of punctuality.<br />

<strong>The</strong> classroom bell rings at 8:10 a.m.; the warning bell at 8:20 a.m.; and the tardy bell<br />

at 8:25 a.m.<br />

Students who report to the classroom after 8:25 a.m. are considered tardy. Children<br />

who are tardy must report to the office for a “late slip.” After repeated tardiness (3 per<br />

quarter), the homeroom teacher will issue a morning detention. Morning detentions<br />

are held from 7:30 to 8:10 a.m.<br />

Students are not considered tardy if their school bus arrives late at school, or if they<br />

have been excused for a medical appointment or illness.<br />

BASIC CURRICULUM<br />

<strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>School</strong> follows the Graded Courses of Study prepared by the Cleveland<br />

Diocesan Office of <strong>Catholic</strong> Education. <strong>The</strong>se Courses of Study have the approval of<br />

the Ohio Department of Education. <strong>The</strong> following is a partial listing of the basic<br />

curriculum:<br />

Religion: God’s goodness, liturgy, commandments, sacraments, Old Testament, life<br />

of Christ, Beatitudes, Church history, the Creed, and prayer.<br />

English/Language Arts: Listening, oral expression/drama, poetry, story-telling, parts<br />

of speech, sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, usage, paragraph structure,<br />

dictionary skills, creative writing, reports, essays, handwriting, and spelling.<br />

Reading: Auditory, motor, and visual skills, phonics, decoding, comprehension,<br />

vocabulary, listening skills, library and study skills, reading in content areas,<br />

recreational reading, and study of the novel and short story.<br />

Social Studies: Communities; map/globe skills; U.S. history/geography; Latin and<br />

South American history/geography; history of civilization; countries of Europe and Asia;<br />

Ohio history/geography; and American history/government.<br />

Math: Basic operations, numeration, problem solving, measurement, graphs,<br />

probability, statistics, basic geometry, and fundamentals of algebra.<br />

Science/Health: General science, matter, energy, earth science, life science, physical<br />

science, lab activities, community and personal health, safety, drug education, and<br />

human sexuality.<br />

Physical Education: Coordination activities, fundamental body movement, elements<br />

of various sports, physical fitness, and games for leisure and health.<br />

Music: Singing, music appreciation, music theory, and opportunities for both<br />

instrumental and vocal performances.<br />

Art: Art theory, creative expression through various media, crafts, and art<br />

appreciation.<br />

Computer: Keyboarding literacy, computer-assisted instruction, integration of<br />

technology with core curriculum, responsible use of the Internet, Power Point<br />

presentations, and Robotics are among the topics covered.<br />

Spanish: Students learn to communicate proficiently in everyday situations. Cultural<br />

awareness of the world where Spanish is spoken as well as Spanish-speaking saints<br />

are integral components of the program. <strong>The</strong> national and state standards and the<br />

four language skills comprise the program.<br />

Library: Library location skills, on-line catalog and databases, effective and<br />

responsible research techniques, exploration of authors, genres and award winning<br />

books.<br />

CARE OF BOOKS & INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS<br />

Since books and other instructional materials are expensive both to purchase and to<br />

maintain from year to year, parents are urged to help their children be responsible for<br />

these materials. Children are financially responsible for the loss or damage of books<br />

or other instructional materials.<br />

CELEBRATIONS<br />

Birthday Celebrations<br />

A student may bring treats to school and dress out of uniform to celebrate his or her<br />

birthday. A student whose birthday falls during periods of vacation may select a day<br />

for celebration. Parents are to make arrangements with the teacher in advance.<br />

Classroom Parties<br />

Classroom parties may be scheduled for the following occasions: Halloween, Mardi<br />

Gras, Valentine’s Day, and St. Patrick’s Day.<br />

Personal Invitations<br />

Personal invitations to parties and/or gifts are not to be delivered or passed out at<br />

school.<br />

CELL PHONES/PERSONAL ELECTRONIC DEVICES<br />

Cell phones and other personal electronic devices may be brought to a school or class<br />

activity under the following conditions:<br />

1. Phones must be kept in the OFF position in the student’s locker or bookbag.<br />

2. No cell phones may be used for picture taking.<br />

3. No harassment or threatening of persons via the cell phone is permitted.<br />

4. Cell phones and personal electronic devices may not be used for game playing,<br />

Internet or email access, gambling, or making purchases of any kind.<br />

5. Personal electronic devices, including e-readers, may be used in the classroom with<br />

permission and under the supervision of the teacher.<br />

6. Personal electronic devices will not be permitted to access the school wireless<br />

network and are not permitted to connect to the Internet via any other connection.<br />

7. <strong>The</strong> student is solely responsible for the care and safety of any cell phones and/or<br />

personal electronic devices.<br />

<strong>The</strong> use of any electronic device must be in accordance with the Acceptable Use<br />

Policy.<br />

Those who violate any rules regarding cell phones and personal electronic devices<br />

may forfeit their privileges of bringing them to school. Devices will be taken and turned<br />

in to the principal. If warranted, disciplinary consequences will apply. Devices will be<br />

returned only to a parent or legal guardian. Contents of a cell phone may be searched<br />

if there exists a reasonable suspicion that it may have been used in an activity<br />

prohibited by the Code of Conduct.<br />

<strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>School</strong><br />

DRESS CODE 2012-2013<br />

<strong>The</strong> following dress code is effective for all students from the opening day to the<br />

closing day of the school year. <strong>School</strong>belles of Cleveland and Kids Kloset Uniforms<br />

handle uniforms for boys and girls. Orders may be placed by mail or online and sent<br />

directly to the student’s home.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Dress Code for Boys <strong>Is</strong> As Follows:<br />

1. Navy blue twill dress pants with plain pockets. A pleated front is permissible.<br />

Pants with designs on the pockets are unacceptable. All tags, labels, and<br />

trim must be removed from pants. A NAVY, BLACK, or BROWN BELT<br />

MUST BE WORN AT ALL TIMES.<br />

2. Light blue dress shirt, either oxford button-down or broadcloth, short or long<br />

sleeve or light blue pique knit short or long sleeve shirt with <strong>Seton</strong> logo.<br />

Shirts are to be plain and are to be tucked into slacks at all times.<br />

3. Light blue dress shirt either oxford button-down or broadcloth short or<br />

long sleeve with plain navy blue ties are required for scheduled Mass<br />

and dress up days. Boys in grades 6-8 may wear a green/navy pin<br />

striped tie.<br />

4. Optional navy sleeveless V-neck sweater vest, long sleeve navy cardigan,<br />

<strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>School</strong> logo fleece or <strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>School</strong> logo sweatshirt<br />

without hood.<br />

5. Hoodies are not part of the school uniform.<br />

6. Under-garments must not be visible.<br />

7. Navy, black, or brown shoes are to be loafers, saddles, deck/boat shoes or<br />

oxfords. No tennis, athletic brand/canvas, worker/construction type, or black<br />

low-cut shoes that have rubber bottoms. No boots/boot-type shoes that<br />

extend above the ankles. No backless or open toe shoes.<br />

8. Socks are to be worn and must be plain white or navy. Crew socks are<br />

acceptable.<br />

9. No rolling of slacks, shorts, or shirt sleeves.<br />

10. Hair is to be neat and well-groomed at all times. Hair is to be of a<br />

moderate length, above the eyebrows and shirt collar, and may not<br />

totally cover the ears. No fad haircuts - this includes no partially-shaven<br />

<strong>The</strong> Dress Code for Girls <strong>Is</strong> As Follows:<br />

1. Regulation plaid jumper or drop waist shift jumper (grades K-4); regulation plaid<br />

skirt or skort (grades 5-8).<br />

2. Optional navy pleated-front twill slacks. Pants with designs on the pockets are<br />

unacceptable. All tags, labels and trim must be removed from pants. A Navy or<br />

black belt MUST BE WORN AT ALL TIMES.<br />

3. Uniform blouse of solid white cotton material with a peter pan collar, an oxford<br />

button-down collar, or pointed collar, short or long sleeves. No ruffles, bows, or<br />

lace on blouses. Blouses are to be tucked into skirts or slacks at all times.<br />

<strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>School</strong> banded polo white or navy shirts may also be worn with<br />

the skirts, skorts or pants.<br />

4. Shoes are to be loafers, saddles, flats, deck/boat shoes, or oxfords. Shoes must<br />

be navy, black, or brown. Sandals, heels, tennis, athletic brand/canvas, or<br />

worker/construction type, or black low-cut shoes that have rubber bottoms are<br />

unacceptable. Boots/boot-type shoes that extend above the ankle are also<br />

unacceptable. No backless or open toe shoes.<br />

5. Socks or tights are to be worn and must be plain white or navy. Long pants<br />

worn under uniform skirts are to be removed after arrival at school.<br />

6. Under-garments must not be visible.<br />

3. If a student wears navy gym shorts November 1 st through March 30 th , navy<br />

<strong>The</strong> final decision regarding the appropriateness of clothing, hairstyles, and<br />

other dress code items will be at the discretion of the teacher and/or the<br />

EMERGENCY CLOSING PROCEDURE<br />

<strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>School</strong> will be closed for inclement weather whenever the following<br />

occurs: (1) Hudson City <strong>School</strong>s are closed and/or (2) Both Aurora and Streetsboro<br />

<strong>School</strong>s are closed. Information on school closings will be announced/listed on local<br />

radio and television stations. Do not call the school. Additionally, closing information<br />

will be placed on the opening page of <strong>Seton</strong>’s website, www.setoncatholicschool.org . If<br />

<strong>Seton</strong> needs to cancel classes for other reasons than weather, the notification will be<br />

broadcast on local radio and television stations, placed on our website and a Parent<br />

Broadcast will take place. When the Hudson City <strong>School</strong>s determine that an early<br />

dismissal is necessary due to road conditions or other emergencies, <strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong><br />

<strong>School</strong> will dismiss as well. <strong>The</strong> radio and news agencies will be notified. Once a<br />

decision has been made to close school because of weather - that decision will be in<br />

effect for the whole day.<br />

Retention<br />

A child will be retained at a given grade level only if it is presumed that he or she will<br />

profit from the experience. Retention must have the prior approval of the principal and<br />

be accepted in writing by the parents. If parents refuse to have a child retained, refusal<br />

should be in writing and will become a part of the child’s permanent record. <strong>The</strong><br />

principal will then decide if the school can continue to meet the educational needs of<br />

the child, or if another educational setting is necessary. Each case of retention is<br />

treated individually and thoroughly discussed by the teacher, principal, and parents.<br />

Parents will be notified by spring break.<br />

Standardized Testing Program<br />

<strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>School</strong> administers standardized tests to certain grade levels as<br />

follows:<br />

Dial-4 is designed to measure strengths and weaknesses in the various learning<br />

modalities (auditory, visual, kinesthetic) for the Kindergarten screening process.<br />

Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS): Primary Battery, grades 1 and 2; Regular Battery,<br />

grades 3,4,5,6,and 7 are designed to measure achievement in learning.<br />

Cognitive Abilities Test (CAT): grades 1,3,5, and 7 are designed to measure the<br />

ability to learn.<br />

State of Ohio Writing Proficiency Test: grades 3, 5, and 7 is designed to assess<br />

student performance on content, organization, language, and writing convention.<br />

EXTRA-CURRICULAR PROGRAMS<br />

<strong>The</strong> teachers/teaching assistants are responsible for the well being of all students. Our<br />

code of conduct will also be applicable to our “Extended Day” program, field trips, and<br />

other school related activities.<br />

Athletic Program<br />

All students who are part of <strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>School</strong> have many opportunities to<br />

participate in intramural sports and the CYO (<strong>Catholic</strong> Youth Organization) under the<br />

auspices of the SAA (<strong>Seton</strong> Athletic Association). <strong>The</strong> purpose of this program is to<br />

foster the development of physical skills and the development of the social and moral<br />

skills that come with being part of a sports team.<br />

Extended Day<br />

This program is available each day from 7:00 to 8:00 a.m. and from 3:15 to 6:00 p.m.<br />

Under the supervision of a responsible adult, the students will have an opportunity to do<br />

school work and participate in recreational and enrichment activities. A snack will be<br />

provided. Registration and fee information is available in the Extended Day booklet.<br />

Extended Day Emergency Use<br />

Between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., no child may be left unsupervised on <strong>Seton</strong><br />

property. If your child is not picked up after dismissal, they must report to this program<br />

where they will be safe and supervised. <strong>The</strong> normal and customary fees of the<br />

Extended Day program will apply.<br />

FAMILY VACATIONS<br />

Vacations taken during school time are discouraged. However, if vacations are taken,<br />

parents should give the principal and homeroom teacher written notification of the<br />

child’s impending absence. After the vacation the student should set up an<br />

appointment with the teacher to obtain all make-up work. Students are responsible for<br />

the mastery of material presented during their absence. Assignments will not be given<br />

prior to the vacation.<br />

FIELD TRIPS<br />

Field trips are a privilege and recognized as an important part of an educational<br />

program. <strong>The</strong>y can provide a valuable addition to the classroom curriculum.<br />

Notification of a field trip, fee, and parental permission slips will be sent prior to the field<br />

trip date. Permission slips must be signed by the parent or guardian and returned to<br />

the school in order for the student to participate in the activity.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Office of <strong>Catholic</strong> Education encourages schools to use commercial buses for day<br />

field trips and other such functions. Though this is an increased cost factor, the<br />

commercial buses provide professional drivers and carry liability coverage in event of<br />

an accident. If volunteer drivers are used, volunteer drivers shall complete a driver<br />

form, hold a valid Ohio driver’s license, and be advised that their personal auto<br />

insurance will be enjoined in event of an accident and claim.<br />

FINANCES<br />

Tuition and Fees<br />

Tuition for the 2012-2013 school year is as follows:<br />

First Child: $5,200<br />

Second Child: $4,940<br />

Third Child: $4,680<br />

Fourth & Over: $4,420<br />

A one-time application fee of $150 per student is required for all new students. A $250<br />

deposit is due from all students at the time of re-enrollment (or upon notification of<br />

acceptance for new students) which will be applied to the tuition balance. This<br />

deposit is non-refundable.<br />

<strong>The</strong> school offers a financial aid program through PSAS. Applications are available<br />

through the school website, or by confidentially contacting the Principal or Controller’s<br />

office. Submission of financial aid forms are the responsibility of the parent and must<br />

be sent directly to PSAS which will provide the school with financial aid results. A<br />

financial aid committee will review the results and award aid based upon PSAS<br />

recommendations. Forms are due to PSAS no later than April 1. Forms submitted<br />

after that date may not be considered. Notifications of financial aid awarded will be<br />

sent by the Controller’s office via mail during May.<br />

Four different options are available for payment of tuition. Payment may be paid in full<br />

by April 1 for a $100 discount per child. Payment may be made in three equal<br />

installments on April 1, June 1, and August 1 for a $50 discount per child. Payment<br />

may be made in full on August 1 with no discount given. All tuition must be paid in<br />

full by August 1 regardless of option chosen. Students will not be placed on<br />

classroom lists if tuition is not received by August 1. A $100 late fee will be assessed<br />

on all accounts overdue after five business days.<br />

Unpaid fees will result in student non-participation in school activities such as (but not<br />

limited to): all graduation activities (including Cedar Point trip); school awards<br />

assemblies; and end-of-year events. Records will not be transferred in the event that<br />

financial obligations are not met throughout the school year.<br />

HEALTH AND ACCIDENT PROCEDURES<br />

<strong>The</strong> school will have nursing services available.<br />

Contagious Diseases<br />

Parents are asked to contact the school nurse or health aide when their child has been<br />

diagnosed as being contagious. This includes strep and head lice.<br />

Dismissal Due to Illness<br />

When a child becomes ill or is injured during the school day and needs to go home, the<br />

child is sent by the teacher to the clinic to wait until a parent or another responsible<br />

party can be reached. Students cannot dismiss themselves by calling home.<br />

Medications<br />

<strong>The</strong> State of Ohio has passed legislation regulating the administration of medication in<br />

school. <strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>School</strong> discourages the practice of students bringing medicine<br />

to school. However, if the student must take medication during the school day, the<br />

following policy is to be followed:<br />

1. Written requests must be obtained from the physician and the parent before any<br />

medication may be administered by the school personnel. <strong>The</strong> request must<br />

include instruction as to the name of the medication, dosage, time and duration of<br />

medication, and possible side effects.<br />

2. Medication must be in the original container and have an affixed label<br />

including the student’s name, name of the medication, dosage, route of<br />

administration, and time of administration.<br />

3. <strong>The</strong> medication and the signed permission forms must be brought to the<br />

school by the parent. Medication will be stored in a locked cabinet.<br />

4. Medication request forms will be made available to parents at the beginning of<br />

school.<br />

5. New request forms are submitted each school year.<br />

6. <strong>The</strong> administration of any drug (prescription or over-the-counter) without<br />

the order of the physician and the permission of the parent could be<br />

interpreted as practicing medicine and is prohibited by law. <strong>The</strong>refore, we<br />

cannot give medication to your child until we receive both forms and the<br />

properly labeled container of medication.<br />

7. No child will be permitted to take medication on his/her own as we cannot<br />

assure the safety of such a method of administration.<br />

8. Injections of any type are not to be administered by educational staff with the<br />

following exception. A student who suffers allergic reactions and carries<br />

an EpiPen may receive assistance from a faculty/staff member IF the parent<br />

approves, the principal approves, and the faculty/staff member has been<br />

trained by an appropriate health professional. <strong>The</strong> child may administer the<br />

EpiPen to himself/herself as well.<br />

9. With parental permission, a student may carry their own inhaler. (Request<br />

the form “Self Medication for Asthma Inhalers.”)<br />

Strep Throat Cultures<br />

If a child has had a throat culture, he/she should be kept home until the result of the<br />

culture is known.<br />

HIGH SCHOOL VISITATION<br />

Eighth grade students are encouraged to visit the area high schools on scheduled<br />

visitation days or days when <strong>Seton</strong> is not in session. Each eighth grader will be<br />

permitted two excused days to shadow at high schools if necessary. <strong>The</strong>se days,<br />

though excused, will be marked as absences, and teachers should be notified prior to<br />

the absence.<br />

HOME and SCHOOL COMMUNICATIONS<br />

Communication between home and school is key to the success of each and every<br />

child. <strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>School</strong> will work toward achieving this common goal for our<br />

children. Effective communication is knowing to whom one goes when a concern must<br />

be addressed. Please use the following order:<br />

1. Student → Teacher → Principal → Board<br />

2. Parent → Teacher → Principal → Board<br />

If you need to communicate with a teacher, please send a note, e-mail the teacher, or<br />

leave a voice message on the teacher’s school phone extension. Teachers will<br />

respond to all parent communications in a prompt manner.<br />

Teachers and students will not be called to the telephone during school hours. In case<br />

of emergencies, you may leave a message with the office. Teachers are responsible<br />

for the safety of their students at the beginning and end of the school day. Please do<br />

not use this time to discuss school concerns with a teacher.<br />

Please communicate your plans for the day to your child(ren) before the school day<br />

begins. Notes regarding transportation changes are to be submitted to the teacher in<br />

written form. If something unforeseen occurs, please telephone the school office by<br />

Noon so that messages can be delivered. Each week parents will receive an email<br />

communication, <strong>Seton</strong> Notes, detailing important board, administration, school, PTO,<br />

and CYO/SAA information. Please read weekly <strong>Seton</strong> Notes and stay informed.<br />

At times during the year the Principal will send a phone broadcast through One Call<br />

Now to all families who have provided a home and/or cell phone number designated to<br />

be used for this system. Backpack delivery of school and classroom information and<br />

materials will be sent home via your child when necessary.<br />

It is recommended that all families check the <strong>Seton</strong> website,<br />

www.setoncatholicschool.org, on a daily basis. Calendar dates, events, documents,<br />

and teacher web pages change each day. Emergency notifications are highlighted by<br />

a banner on the homepage as in the event of our school closing due to weather.<br />

HOMEWORK<br />

Homework is meant to extend and enhance learning begun at school, promote<br />

independent study, encourage individual initiative, provide for the extra practice<br />

needed to perfect fundamental skills, make use of resources outside the school, and<br />

enrich learning. Students in grades 5-8 can access lists of assignments via Edline.<br />

Teachers in grades K-4 will post homework information on their classroom webpage.<br />

<strong>The</strong> length of homework assignments depends on the initiative and ability of the<br />

students and also on the type of assignment given. Long range assignments are often<br />

given to upper grade students to develop a sense of responsibility. Some type of<br />

homework should be done daily.<br />

Parents are to request make-up work and arrange for pick up when the student’s<br />

absence is reported. Absent work will be available in the school office after 3:30 p.m.<br />

<strong>The</strong> student will receive the same number of days to complete the work as the number<br />

of days he was absent.<br />

purchases. You can use the "MyPaymentsPlus" online service (below) to add money to<br />

their child’s account as well as check account balance and history of purchases.<br />

Service, which complies with the National <strong>School</strong> Lunch Program child nutrition<br />

standards.<br />

Two meal options are offered daily:<br />

1. A featured hot meal including a source of protein, carbohydrate, vegetable, and<br />

fruit which changes daily and includes milk.<br />

2. An express meal comprised of a rotating daily alternate along with sides and<br />

milk.<br />

<strong>The</strong> cost of the lunch is $2.65 for Grades K through 5 and $2.95 for Grades 6, 7, and 8.<br />

Milk is sold for $.50<br />

A resource www.mypaymentsplus.com is available for viewing your child’s lunch<br />

account balance, applying funds to your lunch account and also to sign up for<br />

automatic email notifications for your low account status. We HIGHLY recommend that<br />

you utilize this service to maintain the level of funds for your students’ desired<br />

participation in the program. This lunch service is provided as a prepayment service,<br />

funds must be on account for students to participate in the program. NO CHARGING<br />

IS ALLOWED.<br />

<strong>The</strong> identification of students for the lunch program is a biometric finger scan point of<br />

sale service. Accounts are unique to each students finger scan and can be prepaid by<br />

one of the following methods:<br />

1. Send a check or money order to the school office. Please use the pre-printed<br />

envelopes available in the school office. Please make the check payable to<br />

Hudson City <strong>School</strong>s Food Service. Include your student's ID number on your<br />

check or money order.<br />

2. Mail a check or money order to the food school office located at 2440 Hudson-<br />

Aurora Road, Hudson OH 44236. Please make the check payable to Hudson<br />

City <strong>School</strong>s Food Service.<br />

3. Make a credit card or ACH draft payments online through the Horizon's website<br />

(www.mypaymentsplus.com). You will need to create a parent account the first<br />

time you visit the site. You will also need your child's student ID number to list<br />

them under your account. <strong>The</strong>re is a transaction fee applied for these methods<br />

of payment.<br />

4. Cash payments can be accepted at the office. If you provide your student cash<br />

for lunch purchasing they must completely fill out a blue lunch envelope with their<br />

name, identification number, grade, and the amount enclosed at the time of<br />

deposit.<br />

Monies deposited will be posted within 24 hours for purchasing. Should you ever want<br />

to access your child’s account to verify his/her purchases you may sign up for<br />

www.mypaymentsplus.com.<br />

Please remember, we will not be accepting money during the lunch lines to decrease<br />

the amount of time students wait in line, and increase the amount of time they have to<br />

eat.<br />

Applications are available in the office for families that qualify for the Free and<br />

Reduced Lunch program.<br />

PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT<br />

<strong>The</strong> primary responsibility for the education of children belongs to parents. This<br />

responsibility is, however, shared with the school as a matter of practical necessity.<br />

<strong>The</strong> greatest single factor in building a child’s intellectual, cultural, and moral attitude is<br />

the example provided in the home.<br />

For a successful spiritual and educational experience at <strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>School</strong> we<br />

need your help in the following ways:<br />

1. Give a good example in the practice of your faith and sincere prayer life.<br />

2. Build religious celebrations and family prayer into your lifestyle by family attendance<br />

and participation in parish celebrations and activities.<br />

3. Encourage development of your children’s individual talents and interests. Expect<br />

your children to obey the principles and regulations of good behavior, noting their<br />

conduct and effort marks.<br />

4. Provide proper facilities and time for students to complete all homework<br />

assignments in a conscientious manner.<br />

5. Build positive relationships with teachers by contacting the teachers first when a<br />

problem or misunderstanding arises.<br />

6. Volunteer to help with PTO activities.<br />

7. Support Night to Remember and the Annual Fund to the best of your ability.<br />

8. Follow the policies and requests stated in the Family Handbook.<br />

<strong>School</strong> Records<br />

Please inform the school immediately if there is a change in address, marital status,<br />

telephone numbers (home, work, emergency), custody status, or any other important<br />

new or changed information. Student records will be released only with a signed<br />

“Release of Records”.<br />

Sending Money to <strong>School</strong><br />

Please do not send large amounts of cash with your children. Whenever possible,<br />

please pay by check. All checks are made payable to <strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>School</strong>. When<br />

money, cash or check, is sent to the office, the envelope should be carefully marked<br />

with the student’s name, grade, and reason for the money being sent. <strong>The</strong> school is<br />

not responsible for money lost by the student at school.<br />

Transfer Procedures<br />

Your child’s records can be sent only after parents present a request in writing to the<br />

school office stating the name and address of the student’s forwarding institution. A<br />

release form needs to be signed. <strong>The</strong> records will be mailed directly to the new school.<br />

Records cannot be given to the parents.<br />

Visitors to <strong>School</strong><br />

All parents/visitors are required to sign in at the school office and sign out upon<br />

leaving. All visitors should wear the identifying badge while in the building.<br />

Volunteers<br />

<strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>School</strong> encourages parents to get involved in the school. Volunteers<br />

are needed to help with the lunch program, playground, library, classroom, office, A<br />

Night to Remember, fundraising activities, and other school functions.<br />

PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES<br />

Parents are required to attend the conference for the first report card issued in<br />

November. Conferences may be requested by the teacher/parent at the time of the<br />

second scheduled conference date. Conferences can be arranged during the year by<br />

contacting the teacher. All conferences are by appointment only.<br />

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM<br />

<strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>School</strong> will provide a program whereby the <strong>Catholic</strong> faith is not only<br />

taught but also experienced in our daily lives. Participation in religious instruction and<br />

attendance at all liturgical and paraliturgical services are required of all students.<br />

Our program will include the following:<br />

Sacramental Preparation<br />

<strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>School</strong> will provide the preparation that is necessary to celebrate the<br />

Sacrament of Reconciliation and the Sacrament of Holy Eucharist. <strong>The</strong> religious<br />

curriculum taught during the school day includes the instruction needed to receive<br />

these sacraments.<br />

SAFETY AND WELL-BEING<br />

1. <strong>School</strong> doors are locked throughout the day.<br />

2. Visitors enter the building after announcing their names and intentions.<br />

3. Signs are posted on entrance doors, stating “Only authorized persons are<br />

permitted on premises. All visitors must report to the main office.”<br />

4. <strong>The</strong> teachers know our school emergency code name in the event that a stranger<br />

is seen in the building.<br />

5. <strong>The</strong> school has safety drills, such as fire, tornado, lock down, and evacuation.<br />

6. Backpacks and purses may not be carried from class to class. <strong>The</strong>y are emptied<br />

in the morning, and the students carry their books and supplies in their arms.<br />

7. <strong>The</strong> school has a child psychologist who is skilled in child development and is<br />

available to students upon parental request. A list of phone numbers of personnel<br />

and agencies for particular emergencies will be available.<br />

8. Teachers are available to listen to their students when they note student problems,<br />

restlessness, depression, or unusual behavior.<br />

9. Consequences for harassment, intimidation, and bullying are listed in our<br />

handbook.<br />

10. A copy of the complete <strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>School</strong> Safety Plan and Crisis Plan are<br />

available for viewing in the office.<br />

<strong>School</strong> supervision begins at 8:00 a.m. Please do not send children before this time<br />

unless they are being supervised in our morning Extended Day program. <strong>The</strong><br />

classroom bell rings at 8:10 a.m. and the warning bell rings at 8:20 a.m. <strong>The</strong> tardy bell<br />

rings at 8:25 a.m. Morning prayer and announcements will begin at 8:25 a.m.<br />

Any unsupervised child in grades K-8 remaining in the building after 3:30 p.m. will be<br />

sent to our afternoon Extended Day program and parents will be billed accordingly.<br />

SCHOOL LIBRARY<br />

Our library has a collection of over 10,000 items for student and teacher use. <strong>The</strong> library<br />

is open before, during and after school. Students in grades K-8 visit the library weekly as<br />

a class. In addition, students in all grades and classes can visit the library throughout the<br />

school day as needed. <strong>The</strong> library supports the classroom managed Accelerated Reader<br />

and Just Read programs and sponsors the Celebration Book Club, the Scholastic Book<br />

Fair and multiple author visits each year.<br />

STUDENT PHONE CALLS<br />

Students will not be permitted to make phone calls regarding forgotten gym clothes,<br />

books, homework, etc. In unusual circumstances, students may secure the permission<br />

of the Principal or Assistant Principal to use the phone. This allows the student to<br />

accept responsibility that is needed for success in life.<br />

STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT<br />

<strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>School</strong> is called to be a <strong>Catholic</strong> faith community based on the shared<br />

acceptance of the message and challenge of the Gospel. Growth in self-discipline, a<br />

healthy responsibility to <strong>Catholic</strong> moral values, and a loving respect for the rights of all<br />

persons are encouraged and nourished by the teachers and staff of <strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong><br />

<strong>School</strong>.<br />

A <strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>School</strong> student is …<br />

… reverent;<br />

… responsible for his/her education and actions;<br />

… respectful of peers, staff, guests, and competitors;<br />

… cognizant of school goals, policies, and mission.<br />

Teachers on each grade level shall establish specific guidelines for classroom<br />

behavior. <strong>The</strong>se guidelines are posted in the classroom, communicated by the<br />

teachers to the students, and communicated to the parents at Open House.<br />

If intervention is required, the classroom teachers will provide a structure to remind<br />

students of their expectations and to help students modify their behavior. Those<br />

students whose infractions exceed the limits of classroom policy, will be subject to the<br />

structured discipline policy that follows.<br />

Demerit/Detention System (enforced K-8)<br />

Demerits will be issued for actions that may include, but are not limited to:<br />

Repeated infractions of classroom policy<br />

Disrespectful response to an adult<br />

Disrespect to a peer<br />

Misbehavior during Mass, during morning and end of the day prayer, or at any<br />

liturgical service.<br />

Inappropriate use of the property of other students or adults<br />

Being away from an assigned area<br />

Throwing objects or any unsafe actions<br />

Dress code violations<br />

Gum chewing<br />

Unapproved use of cell phones, iPods, or other electronic devices<br />

Demerits must be signed by a parent and returned to school on the following day.<br />

Detentions are issued for more serious offenses or for multiple demerits. Actions that<br />

merit a detention may include, but are not limited to:<br />

Receiving three demerits (in a semester)<br />

Failure to cease disruptive behavior upon issuance of a demerit<br />

Defiant language, actions, or disrespect towards adults<br />

Using insulting or inappropriate spoken or written language<br />

Bullying<br />

Interfering with an individual’s personal boundaries (physical or emotional)<br />

Inappropriate physical contact with another student<br />

Vandalism<br />

Cheating<br />

Receiving a bus conduct slip (at principal’s discretion)<br />

Failure to serve a detention<br />

Detentions are served on Wednesday mornings, from 7:30-8:10 a.m. Alternatively,<br />

detentions may be served as scheduled by the principal.<br />

Suspensions - <strong>The</strong> principal has the right to suspend or expel a student from school<br />

for violation of school policies or for any single infraction. Suspension is the exclusion<br />

of a student from school or class for a specified time. <strong>The</strong> act of suspension also<br />

excludes the student from extracurricular activities until the suspension has been<br />

served.<br />

A suspension may be issued for infractions including, but not limited to:<br />

Receiving three detentions<br />

Egregiously disrespectful acts<br />

Physical or verbal harm to any student<br />

Vandalism, destroying property (restitution is required also)<br />

Smoking or possession of tobacco, matches, or lighter<br />

Possession of alcoholic beverages<br />

Possession of weapon, firearm, or explosives (refer to weapons policy)<br />

Leaving school premises without permission<br />

Following a first suspension, if a student earns another detention, he/she will receive a<br />

three-day suspension.<br />

In the event of a second suspension, a meeting will take place between the principal,<br />

the student, and his/her parents in order to plan the best course of action for that<br />

student. Possibilities include extended suspension and/or investigation into another<br />

school that will better suit the needs of that particular student.<br />

In some cases the principal may deem an action by a student so severe that it would<br />

result in immediate expulsion from school. This decision is the right and responsibility<br />

of the principal in collaboration with the board chairperson.<br />

Because of the seriousness of expulsions, the principal may decide to place the<br />

student on probation. <strong>The</strong> student is expected to improve. Record of academic<br />

progress and general behavior is kept by the administration and the faculty involved.<br />

Any student failing to remove himself/herself from probation will not be allowed to<br />

return to <strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>School</strong>.<br />

ANTI-HARASSMENT, INTIMIDATION, AND ANTI-BULLYING POLICY<br />

<strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>School</strong> teaches belief in the sanctity of human life and the inherent<br />

dignity of the human person. We believe that all students, school employees and<br />

volunteers have a right to a safe and healthy school environment. All members of the<br />

school community, in turn, have an obligation to promote mutual respect, tolerance,<br />

and acceptance.<br />

Harassment, intimidation, or bullying behavior by any student/school personnel in<br />

<strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>School</strong> is strictly prohibited, and such conduct may result in disciplinary<br />

action, including suspension and/or expulsion from school. “Harassment, intimidation,<br />

or bullying,” in accordance with House Bill 276, mean any intentional written, verbal,<br />

graphic or physical acts including electronically transmitted acts i.e., Internet, cell<br />

phone, personal digital assistant (PDA), or wireless hand-held device, either overt or<br />

covert, by a student or group of students toward other students/school personnel with<br />

the intent to harass, intimidate, injure, threaten, ridicule or humiliate. Such behaviors<br />

are prohibited on or immediately adjacent to school grounds, at any school-sponsored<br />

activity, on school-provided transportation or at any official school bus stop that a<br />

reasonable person under the circumstances should know will the effect of:<br />

1. Causing mental or physical harm to the other student/school personnel<br />

including placing an individual in reasonable fear of physical harm and/or<br />

damaging of students’/personal property; and<br />

2. <strong>Is</strong> sufficiently severe, persistent, or pervasive that it creates an intimidating,<br />

threatening, or abusive educational environment for the other student/school<br />

personnel.<br />

<strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>School</strong> will not tolerate behavior that infringes on the safety of any<br />

student, school employee, or volunteer. A student, school employee or volunteer shall<br />

not intimidate or harass another student, school employee or volunteer through words<br />

or actions whether in the classroom, on school property, to and from school or at<br />

school- sponsored events, or from any computer not on school property.<br />

Definition<br />

“Harassment, intimidation or bullying” means any intentional written, verbal, graphic, or<br />

physical act that a student or group of students, school employee or volunteer<br />

exhibited toward another particular student, school employee or volunteer more than<br />

once and the behavior both:<br />

1. Causes mental or physical harm to the other; and<br />

2. <strong>Is</strong> sufficiently severe, persistent or pervasive that it creates an intimidating,<br />

threatening or abusive educational environment for the other.<br />

Such behavior includes overt intent to ridicule, humiliate or intimidate another student,<br />

school employee or volunteer. Examples of conduct that could constitute prohibited<br />

behaviors include:<br />

1. Physical violence and/or attacks;<br />

2. Threats, taunts and intimidation through words and/or gestures;<br />

3. Extortion, damage or stealing of money and/or possessions;<br />

4. Exclusion from the peer group or spreading rumors; and<br />

5. Repetitive and hostile behavior with the intent to harm others<br />

through the use of information and communication technologies and other<br />

Web-based/online sites (also known as “cyberbullying”), such as the following:<br />

Posting slurs on Web sites where students congregate or on Web<br />

logs (personal online journals or diaries);<br />

Sending abusive or threatening instant messages;<br />

Using camera phones to take embarrassing photographs of students<br />

and posting them online; and,<br />

Using Web sites to circulate gossip and rumors to other students;<br />

Excluding others from an online group by falsely reporting them for<br />

inappropriate language to Internet service providers.<br />

Procedure for the Alleged Victim<br />

1. Communicate to the harasser that the individual expects the behavior to stop,<br />

2. If the harassment does not stop, or the individual does not feel comfortable<br />

confronting the harasser, the individual should:<br />

Tell a teacher, counselor or principal; and<br />

Write down exactly what happened, keep a copy and give another copy<br />

to the teacher, counselor or principal including:<br />

• What, when and where it happened;<br />

• Who was involved;<br />

• Exactly what was said or what the harasser did;<br />

• Witnesses to the harassment;<br />

• What the student said or did, either at the time or later;<br />

• How the student felt; and<br />

• How the harasser responded.<br />

Complaint Procedure<br />

<strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>School</strong> expects students and/or staff to<br />

immediately report incidents of bullying to the principal or his/her designee. Staff<br />

members are expected to immediately intervene when they see a bullying incident<br />

occur. “A school employee, student, or volunteer shall be individually immune from<br />

liability in a civil action for damages arising from reporting an incident in accordance<br />

with a policy if that person reports an incident of harassment, intimidation or bullying<br />

promptly in good faith and in compliance with the procedures specified in the policy.”<br />

(ODE Model Policy, Rev. 03, 05/14/07 #2.2.11.)<br />

<strong>The</strong> principal upon receiving a complaint will notify parents or guardians of any student<br />

involved in a prohibited incident and can provide access to any written reports<br />

pertaining to the prohibited incident within the spirit of the Ohio Revised Code<br />

3319.321 and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 as amended.<br />

(See attachments.)<br />

<strong>The</strong> principal may appoint an investigator. <strong>The</strong> complainant completes an Anti-<br />

Harassment/Bullying Complaint Form (see attachment). Any evidence of the<br />

harassment, including but not limited to letters, tapes and pictures should be turned<br />

over to the investigator. Each complaint of bullying should be promptly investigated.<br />

<strong>The</strong> investigator, with the approval of the principal, or the principal has the authority to<br />

initiate an investigation in the absence of a written complaint.<br />

Any witness to the event is encouraged to complete an Anti-Harassment/Bullying<br />

Witness Disclosure Form (see attachment). Information received during the<br />

investigation is kept confidential to the extent possible.<br />

<strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>School</strong> prohibits retaliatory behavior against any complainant, witness<br />

or any participant in the complaint process. Any person who engages in bullying may<br />

be subject to disciplinary action up to and including expulsion.<br />

Investigation Procedure<br />

It is imperative that harassment, intimidation, or bullying be identified only when the<br />

specific elements of the definition are met because the designation of such prohibited<br />

incidents carry special statutory obligations. However, misconduct by one student<br />

against another student, whether appropriately defined or not, will result in appropriate<br />

disciplinary consequences for the perpetrator.<br />

In evaluating whether conduct constitutes harassment, intimidation or bullying, special<br />

attention should be paid to the words chosen or the actions taken, whether such<br />

conduct occurred in front of others or was communicated to others, how the<br />

perpetrator interacted with the victim, and the motivation, either admitted or<br />

appropriately inferred.<br />

<strong>The</strong> investigator will reasonably and promptly commence the investigation upon receipt<br />

of the complaint. <strong>The</strong> investigator will interview the complainant and the alleged<br />

harasser. <strong>The</strong> alleged harasser may file a written statement in response to the<br />

complaint. <strong>The</strong> investigator may also interview witnesses as deemed appropriate.<br />

Upon completion of the investigation, the investigator will make written findings and<br />

conclusions as to each allegation of harassment and report the findings and<br />

conclusions to the principal. <strong>The</strong> investigator will provide a copy of the findings of the<br />

investigation to the principal.<br />

Resolution of the Complaint<br />

Following receipt of the investigator’s report, the principal may investigate further, if<br />

deemed necessary, and make a determination of any appropriate additional steps that<br />

may include discipline. Prior to the determination of the appropriate remedial action,<br />

the principal may, at the principal’s discretion, interview the complainant and the<br />

alleged harasser. <strong>The</strong> principal will file a written report closing the case and<br />

documenting any disciplinary action taken or any other action taken in response to the<br />

complaint. <strong>The</strong> complainant, the alleged harasser and the investigator will receive<br />

notice as to the conclusion of the investigation. <strong>The</strong> principal will maintain a log of<br />

information<br />

necessary to comply with Ohio Department of Education reporting procedures.<br />

Points to Remember in the Investigation<br />

• Evidence uncovered in the investigation is confidential.<br />

• Complaints must be taken seriously and investigated.<br />

• No retaliation will be taken against individuals involved in the investigation<br />

process.<br />

• Retaliators will be disciplined up to and including suspension and expulsion.<br />

Conflicts<br />

If the investigator is a witness to the incident, an alternate investigator shall be<br />

appointed to investigate.<br />

TRANPORTATION AND SAFETY<br />

Busing - <strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>School</strong> students riding buses must adhere to the following<br />

rules:<br />

1. Obey guidelines and rules about bus safety.<br />

2. Walk as you get on and off the bus. Don’t run.<br />

3. Keep the aisles clear of books and bags.<br />

4. Talk quietly.<br />

5. Keep your hands and head inside the windows and to yourself.<br />

6. Stay in your seat.<br />

7. Cross the street carefully when you get off the bus.<br />

AIDS POLICY REGARDING STUDENTS<br />

DIOCESAN LEGAL POLICIES<br />

Our school supports the AIDS policy as adopted by the Diocese of Cleveland.<br />

Children with Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) enrolled or seeking<br />

enrollment in Grades K thru 12 shall be permitted to attend school or parish religious<br />

education programs in a regular classroom setting provided:<br />

1. <strong>The</strong> health of a child, as documented by his/her physician, allows participation in<br />

regular academic activities.<br />

2. <strong>The</strong> child behaves acceptably; in a manner that would not cause the spread of<br />

the disease or in any way put others at risk.<br />

3. <strong>The</strong> child does not have open sores, skin eruptions, or any other condition which<br />

prevents his/her control of bodily secretions.<br />

4. <strong>The</strong>re are periodic evaluations of the child’s physical condition with written<br />

certification from his/her physician allowing continuing participation in regular<br />

academic school activities.<br />

At <strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>School</strong>, the executive board and principal will confer with the<br />

appropriate persons and consult with the regional superintendent before the executive<br />

board and principal make the final decision on each case in the school. Parents have<br />

the obligation to report to the school administration when any child has been<br />

diagnosed as having AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome), ARC (AIDS<br />

related complex), or other illnesses caused by HIV (human deficiency virus, the virus<br />

that causes AIDS, also known as HTLVIII or LAV).<br />

FAMILY CUSTODIAL SITUATIONS RELATIONSHIPS WITH THE SCHOOL<br />

Two Parent<br />

In two-parent families it is assumed that both parents are living at the same address<br />

unless we have been notified otherwise. <strong>School</strong> personnel will, therefore, send home<br />

notices and communication regarding the child and that information is shared by and<br />

between the parents. <strong>The</strong> information includes, but is not limited to, conference<br />

appointments, report cards, progress reports, discussion with school personnel, and<br />

tuition statements.<br />

Separation<br />

In families experiencing separation of parents or pending divorce, the above<br />

information will be sent home with the child to whichever parent currently has care of<br />

the child. It is assumed that this information is shared by and between the parents.<br />

Since this situation frequently impacts on a child’s achievements and interactions at<br />

school, parents are asked to inform both the principal and teacher of this fact so that<br />

appropriate support can be given to the child. <strong>School</strong> personnel cannot proceed on<br />

hearsay, rumors, or demands of a parent. Requests will be acted on only with the<br />

appropriate documentation.<br />

Custodial Parent<br />

In cases of an actual divorce decree involving clear custody by one parent, the<br />

principal is to be informed by the custodial parent of this fact. A copy of the first page<br />

of the decree bearing the case number, the pages referring to custody and the<br />

relationship to the school, and the final page bearing the judge’s signature are to be<br />

submitted to the principal.<br />

Unless the decree indicates otherwise, school communications will be sent home to<br />

the custodial parent. Custodial parents should understand, however, that unless the<br />

divorce decree specifically limits the non-custodial parent’s right to access the records,<br />

the non-custodial parent has a right to the same access as the custodial parent.<br />

<strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>School</strong> will, unless instructed by a court order, release such records<br />

upon request to the non-custodial parent. However, we ask the custodial parent to<br />

cooperate with the school and share information, correspondence, and conference<br />

appointments directly with the non-custodial parent. This avoids time-consuming<br />

duplication of services.<br />

Further, parents should realize that unless restricted by court order any non-custodial<br />

parent has the right to attend any school activity of the child including sports activities<br />

and class programs. Parents should keep each other informed as to these activities to<br />

avoid duplication of communication and to allow the school to better attend to the duty<br />

of teaching your children.<br />

Joint Custody<br />

In cases of “joint custody” entitling both parents access to school personnel and<br />

activities, it is assumed that one copy of communication and information will be sent<br />

home with the child and this will be shared by and between the parents.<br />

Regarding parent conferences in all custody situations, it is preferred and will be the<br />

general procedure that one conference appointment will be scheduled “jointly” if both<br />

parents wish to be present. It is assumed that parents are able to set aside differences<br />

and to come together on behalf of the child for this time. A joint conference further<br />

insures that both parents are given the same information at the same time, thereby<br />

avoiding misunderstanding and misinterpretations.<br />

In cases where joint conferences are clearly neither possible nor desirable by all<br />

parties involved, alternate arrangements may be discussed with the principal. Every<br />

effort will be made to keep communications open with both parents while at the same<br />

time avoiding duplication of services and excessive demands on the teacher’s time.<br />

Visitation should generally begin at the home of one of the parents and not at school.<br />

It is hoped that visitation arrangements would reflect the sensitivity of both parents to<br />

the consistency and routines that foster security in a child and allow for school<br />

responsibilities and homework to be taken care of during the school week.<br />

If there are questions concerning the restatement of procedure or circumstances that<br />

you feel necessitate other arrangements, please contact the principal personally.<br />

Separately Mailed Information to Non-Custodial or Joint Custody Parents<br />

If a non-custodial parent or a joint custodial parent wants progress reports, report<br />

cards, or a school calendar mailed to them, it is necessary for them to provide selfaddressed<br />

stamped business envelopes to the homeroom teacher of their child during<br />

the first full month of the new school year. Otherwise, it will be assumed that<br />

information is being shared as stated in the above policy of <strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>School</strong>.<br />

SEARCH AND SEIZURE<br />

Student lockers, desks, cabinets, and similar property are the property of <strong>Seton</strong><br />

<strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>School</strong> and provided to students as a convenience for their use. Lockers and<br />

other such property carry no expectation of privacy for the students who occupy them.<br />

<strong>School</strong> lockers, desks, cabinets, etc., and their contents are subject to search by<br />

school authorities at any time and without warning.<br />

SEXUAL HARASSMENT AND SEXUAL VIOLENCE POLICY<br />

<strong>The</strong> board, administration, and staff of <strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>School</strong> are firmly committed to<br />

providing a safe, positive learning and working environment for everyone in the school.<br />

For this reason, and in keeping with the goals and objectives of <strong>Catholic</strong> education,<br />

<strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>School</strong> expressly prohibits sexual harassment and sexual violence in<br />

the school environment. This policy reemphasizes the personal dignity of the<br />

individual and fosters positive sexual attitudes and respect for others.<br />

Sexual Harassment<br />

For the purposes of this policy, sexual harassment includes but is not limited to, the<br />

following specific instances: verbal sexual abuse; disseminating obscene or sexually<br />

explicit material, whether in the form of music, written lyrics, pornographic pictures, or<br />

other literature, or having such material in one’s possession in the school, on school<br />

grounds, or at school-sponsored activities; obscene or sexually explicit graffiti<br />

anywhere in the school or on the school grounds, continuing and unwanted written or<br />

oral communication directed to another of a sexual nature; spreading sexual<br />

rumors/innuendoes; obscene T-shirts, hats, or buttons; touching oneself sexually in<br />

front of others; obscene and/or sexually explicit gestures; and any other inappropriate<br />

behavior of a sexually explicit or obscene nature that demeans or offends the recipient.<br />

<strong>The</strong> above list is not meant to be all-inclusive, but is intended to provide guidance as to<br />

what may constitute sexual harassment.<br />

Allegations of sexual harassment are to be reported to the teacher and the principal.<br />

Parents of both the offender and the victim will be informed of the allegations. <strong>The</strong><br />

matter will be kept confidential by all parties involved, and every effort will be made to<br />

protect the alleged victim from retaliation. <strong>The</strong> parents of both the offender and the<br />

victim are obligated to cooperate in remedying the situation.<br />

If the allegations are substantiated, disciplinary action will be taken. <strong>The</strong>se will depend<br />

on the nature, frequency, and severity of the action, the ages of the offender and<br />

victim, the history of similar actions by this individual, and the circumstances in which<br />

the harassment occurred. Possible disciplinary actions may include, but are not limited<br />

to, any or all of the following:<br />

verbal warning/reprimand and apology to the victim,<br />

a parent/student/principal conference,<br />

written warning/reprimand and parent notification, entered in the student’s file,<br />

detention or removal from selected school activities and/or extracurricular<br />

activities,<br />

behavior/probation contracts, possibly requiring professional intervention,<br />

suspension,<br />

expulsion.<br />

STUDENT THREATS POLICY AND PROCEDURE<br />

A. Any and all student threats to inflict any harm to self or others must be taken<br />

seriously immediately.<br />

B. Whoever hears the threat should report it immediately to the principal, teacher, or<br />

staff person.<br />

C. Police should be notified immediately.<br />

D. <strong>The</strong> student should be kept in the principal’s office under supervision until the<br />

police arrive.<br />

E. <strong>The</strong> parent/guardian of the student who has made the threat shall be notified<br />

immediately.<br />

F. Any adult or the parent/guardian of any students who have been verbally<br />

mentioned as potential victims or listed in writing as potential victims shall be<br />

notified immediately.<br />

G. <strong>The</strong> student should be suspended and not be considered for readmission to school<br />

until a comprehensive mental health evaluation/risk assessment has been<br />

conducted by a psychiatrist/psychologist. If a psychiatrist performs the primary<br />

evaluation, he/she shall determine the necessity to utilize a psychologist for<br />

psychological consultation and/or testing. If a psychologist performs the primary<br />

evaluation, he/she shall determine the need for psychiatric consultation. <strong>The</strong><br />

evaluation shall comply with the provisions of ORC 2305.51.<br />

<strong>The</strong> principal shall provide the mental health care professional with all relevant<br />

facts, including but not limited to aggressive behavior, details of the threat as<br />

known to the principal, copies of any drawings or writings, disciplinary history of<br />

the student, behavioral concerns, and the names of any known victims or potential<br />

victims.<br />

<strong>The</strong> mental health care professional shall provide a follow-up assessment of the<br />

student within 30 days if the student is readmitted to school and shall provide the<br />

principal with a copy of the follow-up assessment and/or evaluation and shall<br />

inform the principal if therapy, counseling and/or treatment will be needed and/or<br />

provided.<br />

H. Counseling should be made available to children who are victims of the<br />

threatening behavior or who observed the threatening behavior if it is determined<br />

that such counseling is needed and parental permission is granted.<br />

I. Documentation from the mental health care professionals concerning any student<br />

are to be placed in a separate, confidential file and should not be a part of the<br />

student’s academic/disciplinary file with access only by the principal. This<br />

documentation may be kept for a period of one year beyond the time when the<br />

child leaves the school as a result of expulsion, withdrawal by parent/guardian,<br />

graduation or non-readmission before being destroyed.<br />

WEAPONS POLICY<br />

In furtherance of the overall philosophy, goals, and objectives of the <strong>Catholic</strong><br />

educational experience, <strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>School</strong> policy expressly prohibits the use,<br />

possession, sale, or discharge of any weapons or explosive devices in the school, on<br />

school grounds, or at school-sponsored activities. This policy shall apply to all<br />

students, participants in parish programs, teachers, administrators, and other<br />

personnel in the school.<br />

This policy includes, but is not limited to, any firearm, any dangerous object or object<br />

used as a weapon (look-alike weapon), knife, deadly weapon, or explosive or<br />

incendiary device. As defined by state law, a deadly weapon is “any instrument,<br />

device, or thing capable of inflicting death, and designed or specifically adapted for use<br />

as a weapon, or possessed, carried or used as a weapon” (O.R.C. 2923). Firearms<br />

shall include any loaded or unloaded gun of any caliber or type. This prohibition also<br />

includes any pistol, rifle, or other device that uses air or gas-propelled projectiles.<br />

Violations of this policy may warrant notification of the police, immediate suspension,<br />

and possible expulsion. If possession of a weapon is suspected, the principal or other<br />

administrator should immediately contact the police department. If it is determined that<br />

the policy has been violated, the parents of the offender shall be immediately<br />

contacted and must cooperate with the disciplinary process.<br />

A model disciplinary process should include immediate in- or out-of-school suspension,<br />

pending investigation and resolution. If the student’s infraction does not warrant<br />

immediate dismissal, then the parents may be required to sign a probation contract<br />

that includes all conditions of the student’s retention at the school. Possible terms of<br />

this probation agreement may include professional counseling, participation in a<br />

community program addressing youth violence, suspension from extracurricular<br />

activities, and any other conditions deemed appropriate by the administration of the<br />

school.<br />

YOUTH GANGS<br />

Youth gangs and gang-related activity are prohibited. A gang is defined as any nonschool<br />

sponsored group, usually secret and/or exclusive in membership, whose<br />

purpose or practices include unlawful or antisocial behavior or any actions that<br />

threatens the welfare of others. Gang activity includes: recruitment, initiation, a<br />

manner of grooming, hair style and/or wearing of clothing, jewelry, head coverings, or<br />

accessories which by virtue of color, arrangement, trademark, or other attributes<br />

denotes membership in a gang, displaying gang markings or slogans on school or<br />

personal property or clothing, having gang tattoos, possessing literature that indicates<br />

gang membership, fighting, assault, hazing, extortion, establishing turf, use of hand<br />

signals, gang vocabulary and nicknames, possession of beepers or cellular phones,<br />

possession of weapons or explosive materials, possession of alcohol, drugs, drug<br />

paraphernalia, attendance at functions sponsored by a gang or known gang members,<br />

exhibiting behavior fitting police profiles of gang-related drug dealing, being arrested or<br />

stopped by police with a known gang member, selling or distributing drugs for a known<br />

gang member, helping a known gang member commit a crime, or any other action<br />

directly resulting from membership or interest in a gang.<br />

In this the 21 st century, we are in a time of new and ever changing technologies. We at<br />

<strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>School</strong> believe using new technologies, electronic resources, and<br />

Internet access enhance student learning and provide a quality educational experience<br />

for all students. It is our privilege to be able to offer use of such technological<br />

resources to enhance the educational experience. However, despite these benefits,<br />

the Internet reflects the values of a global society and can provide access to sites that<br />

would be considered inappropriate. <strong>The</strong> purpose of this policy is to ensure the proper<br />

use of the technologies while enrolled at <strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>School</strong>.<br />

All users are expected to use the technology available at <strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>School</strong> in a<br />

manner that is consistent with the teachings and mission of the <strong>Catholic</strong> Church and<br />

the school’s academic programs. Technology includes, but is not limited to, cellular<br />

telephones, beepers, pagers, radios, CD/MP3/DVD players, video recorders, video<br />

games, personal data devices, computers, other hardware, electronic devices,<br />

software, Internet, e-mail and all other similar networks and devices. Users are<br />

expected to be responsible and use technology to which they have accessed<br />

appropriately. Obscene, pornographic, threatening, or other inappropriate use of<br />

technology, including, but not limited to, e-mail, instant messaging, web pages, and the<br />

use of hardware and/or software which disrupts or interferes with the safety and<br />

welfare of the school community, is prohibited, even if such uses take place after<br />

school hours or off school property (i.e., home, business, private property, etc.).<br />

Students must*:<br />

1. Respect and protect the privacy of others.<br />

a. Use only assigned accounts.<br />

b. Decline to view, use, or copy passwords, data, or networks to which they<br />

are not authorized.<br />

c. Avoid distribution of private information about others or themselves.<br />

2. Respect and protect the integrity, availability, and security of all electronic<br />

resources.<br />

a. Observe all network security practices as posted.<br />

b. Report security risks or violations to a school administrator, teacher or<br />

network administrator.<br />

c. Refrain from destroying or damaging data, networks, or other resources<br />

that do not belong to them without clear permission of the owner.<br />

d. Conserve, protect, and share these resources with other students and<br />

Internet users.<br />

e. Abstain from overriding the Internet content filtering system.<br />

3. Respect and protect the intellectual property of others.<br />

a. Refrain from copyright infringement (no making illegal copies of music,<br />

games, or movies).<br />

b. Avoid plagiarism.<br />

4. Respect and practice the principles of parish and school community.<br />

a. Communicate only in ways that are kind and respectful.<br />

b. Report threatening or discomforting materials to a school administrator,<br />

teacher or network administrator.<br />

c. Refuse to access, transmit, copy, or create material that violates the<br />

school's code of conduct (such as messages that are pornographic,<br />

threatening, rude, discriminatory, or meant to harass).<br />

d. Avoid accessing, transmitting, copying, or creating material that is illegal<br />

(such as obscenity, stolen materials, or illegal copies of copyrighted works).<br />

e. Abstain from using the resources to further other acts that are criminal or<br />

violate the school's code of conduct.<br />

f. Avoid sending spam, chain letters, or other mass unsolicited mailings.<br />

g. Refrain from buying, selling, advertising, or otherwise conducting business,<br />

unless approved as a school project.<br />

h. Avoid posting or disseminating any harassing, demeaning, threatening or<br />

immoral comment or visual injurious to the reputation of the school, the<br />

parish, the Church or an individual, whether the action occurs on school<br />

property or off grounds.<br />

* Numbers one through four are not an all-inclusive list of inappropriate uses<br />

and activities.<br />

Consequences for Violation: Violations of these rules may result in disciplinary<br />

action, including the loss of a student's privileges to use the school's information<br />

technology resources. Users have the responsibility to use technology resources in an<br />

appropriate manner. Consequences of misuse or abuse of these resources will be<br />

disciplined depending on the severity of the situation.<br />

Supervision and Monitoring: <strong>School</strong> and network administrators and their authorized<br />

employees periodically monitor the use of information technology resources to help<br />

ensure that uses are secure and in conformity with this policy. Students have no<br />

expectation of privacy with respect to the use of technology resources. Administrators<br />

reserve the right to examine, use, and disclose any data found on the school's<br />

information networks in order to further the health, safety, discipline, or security of any<br />

student or other person, or to protect property. <strong>The</strong> school administration has the right<br />

of access to any electronic devices brought onto school property. <strong>The</strong>y may also use<br />

this information in disciplinary actions and will furnish evidence of crime to law<br />

enforcement should one be committed.<br />

Agreement form: In order to ensure the proper use of technology resources, it is<br />

necessary that each user and parent/guardian annually sign the attached Student<br />

Acceptable Use Policy – User Agreement Form. <strong>The</strong> signed form must be on file at<br />

<strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>School</strong> before Internet and other technology access is permitted.<br />

Signing the form indicates that the user will abide by the rules governing Internet and<br />

other technology access as stated in this policy.<br />

<strong>The</strong> school reserves the right to issue additional or more detailed rules for the use of<br />

technology resources, and violations of such rules may be a cause for imposition of<br />

any of the penalties delineated above.<br />

<strong>The</strong> school reserves the right to seek financial restitution for any damage caused by a<br />

student.<br />
