Seton Catholic School 7Anna Seppe Wiley & Rudy Wiley Scholarships of ExcellenceChristina Passerelland Justin NicholasOne of many blessings to come to Seton last year was a visit from two Hudsonresidents looking to honor a friend through the establishment of two annualscholarship awards. At the end of the school year, Christina Passerell and Justin Nicholas were the firstrecipients of the Anna Seppe Wiley Scholarship for Excellence and the Rudy WileyScholarship for Excellence, respectively.Anna Seppe Wiley was the daughter of a Count and Countess in Italy whoimmigrated here sometime after WWII with her husband and small baby boy, Rudy. Her husband was a Chemical Engineer from the Czech Republic who had been promised a job in the UnitedStates. Upon arrival in New York City, they were informed that the job had been given to another person.Even though Mrs. Wiley was not formally educated, as her father did not believe in educating his daughters, she taught herself English, worked long hours as a seamstress, and earned enough to keep her familytogether. She raised her son, Rudy, to value education and supported him as he went on to earn multiple degrees.Mrs. Wiley’s was preceded in death by her husband (Charles) and son (Rudy). Mrs. Wiley passed away in2007. Upon her death, a sum of money was left to friends of many years. It was during this friendship thatAnna Seppe Wiley shared the story of her life. The friends felt that Anna’s wishes would be best served byusing the monies left for a scholarship at Seton Catholic School. They feel that her memory, and that of herson who died tragically of cancer, would be immortalized by providing two children yearly with a gift tofurther their education in a school that is academically excellent and Catholic. They also stressed that thechildren selected should exhibit an appreciation for his and her country or city, and show superiorcitizenship by their thoughts and actionsEach year, the Principal of Seton Catholic School and one representative teacher from both the sixth andseventh grades shall select a scholarship recipient for the following year. Scholarship recipients shall applyfor the scholarship by submitting an application which establishes eligibility using the criteria ofdemonstrated academic excellence coupled with a written essay on their appreciation of this country andthe opportunities afforded the residents of the United States of America.Congratulations to our 2011-12 recipients, Christina and Justin!Kulbago Family Science Olympiad FundEstablished this past year, the Kulbago Family Science Olympiad fund shall provide additional financialsupport via an annual stipend for the future leadership, management and organization all aspects of theScience Olympiad program. The faculty member should have a demonstrated expertise in one or more ofthe core science disciplines of biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, computers, or technology.Under Mrs. Kulbago’s leadership, the Seton Science Olympiad teams have won the St. IgnatiusInvitational four years in a row; advanced to the State Competition three years in a row; and placed 2 nd atthe Regional Tournament in 2011. While Mrs. Kulbago will remain director of the program as a volunteerfor the next few years, the family wants to ensure that proper time and attention is given to the programand a proper leader guides the program into the future. While programming may change over time, theintent of this fund is to support opportunities for excellence in science, technology, engineering and mathfor the students of Seton Catholic School.2010-11 Annual Report to the Community

8 Seton Catholic SchoolFund Your PassionThese are just some of the examples of how gifts to Seton Catholic School can be directed to areas of significantneed that are also of particularly keen interest to the generous donors. As an independent school operating withoutsupport from any parish or religious order, the prayerful consideration of our donors is what helps us maintain andcontinuously improve. Thank you for all gifts of time, talent and treasure!Bridging the “Gap”As with many private schools, the difference between the true cost of school operations and actual tuitioncharged falls to the responsibility of the Development Office and direct school fundraising initiatives. The “gap” infunding for the 2010-11 school year was $1,311 per student.High School Matriculation“As we turn and look back at our days here at Seton Catholic School,we will picture our teachers, staff and parents watching us.And knowing their confidence in us, we will take a deep breath, whisper a prayer and walk on.”From Commencement Mass Address of graduating eighth graders Zoe Leciejewski and Henry Stitzel (June 2, 2011)Archbishop Hoban High SchoolJennifer Guerriero Graham OndersJohn Reichard Henry StitzelBenedictine High SchoolMichael ReevesCuyahoga Valley Christian AcademyMatthew WallaceHudson High SchoolBilly FriendAlex KovalcheckSean McKeonMark PostonLiam SmithAlex KoberleinRyan McBrideBen MehelicKelsey RussoCatherina TubbsOur Lady of the ElmsAthena Androulakakis Kelsey FrewValerie NguyenSaint Ignatius High SchoolTommy WagnerWalsh Jesuit High SchoolRyan Feltner Hailey FilonKevin KolarChad RingSam Strebler Blake TownsendKatie ValenzianoWestern Reserve AcademyKatie Chlysta Michael D’AmatoZoe Leciejewski Anna McMurchyJoseph Mylott Patrick MylottConnor SempleSaint Elizabeth Ann Seton Society (as of 6/30/2011)The Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Society recognizes individuals, families, corporations and foundations who havegiven $50,000 or more since the establishment of Seton Catholic School.Anonymous Friend of SetonThe Burton D.
