is this tour for me?
This comprehensive journey through Peru, is a collision of ancient historical tradition and
unrivalled natural beauty. This epic trek explores the best this country has to offer, from
the coastal Ballestas to the centre of Peruvian beliefs at Lake Titicaca. Experience some
of the world’s most breathtaking mountain scenery, along with some of the Inca’s finest
archaeological sites. The mysterious Nazca Lines, Colca Canyon’s condors, the Inca Trail
to the lost city of Machu Picchu; see the top spots of Peru’s many impressive highlights.
Trip overview
Retrace ancient footsteps by hitting the four day Inca Trail en route to the lost city of
Machu Picchu, hidden under a blanket of jungle and growth, Hiram Binham brought the
Inca city to the world’s attention having rediscovered it in 1911. The magnificent ‘lost city’
stands on a high saddle, dominated by the jungle-clad peak of Wayna Picchu. Seeing this
iconic site will surely be a highlight. Soak in the hot springs at Aguas Calientes and return
to explore early morning and beat the crowds.
Watch sea lions, penguins, sea birds and the mysterious Candelabrum at the Ballestas Islands
Nature Reserve before opting to soar high above the desert for a bird’s eye view of the Nazca
Lines. There’s time in the Sacred Valley for optional rafting, biking and horse riding.
A bus journey takes you through the Andes to Cusco, the old Inca capital. Nearby you’ll
explore the vast, ruined fortress of Sacsayhuaman and Pisac’s bustling and colourful market.
Cusco is a pleasant place to explore at your leisure and was the site of the historic capital of
the Inca Empire and was declared a World Heritage Site in 1983 by UNESCO.
Travel to 5,000 meters to watch condors soar at Colca Canyon, before arriving to Puno and
the shores of Lake Titicaca, where a boat will take you to the floating Uros Islands to visit
the Indian villages. The tortora reed which grows here is used to make their islands, houses
and boats, constantly being rejuvenated and built on top of as the bottom layer rots.
This tour is suitable for all travellers after an adventure with culture, epic walking trails and
those wanting to scratch beneath the surface of such a magnificent country.
Highlights:
Trek the ancient Inca Trail to Machu Picchu
Swim in hot springs and hit the dunes on your sand board
Itinerary & Details
Day 1 - Arrival day in Lima - Arrive into Lima and transfer (not
included) to our gateway hotel and explore the city at your leisure. You
meet your tour leader at approximately 18:00hrs tonight at the hotel.
Accommodation: Hotel included | Meals: Paid locally
Day 2 - Paracas - Embark on your journey south along Peru’s Pacific
desert coast. Visit the coastal ruins of Pachacamacto, and continue on
to the fishing village of Paracas.
Accommodation: Hotel included | Meals: Paid locally
Day 3 - Huacachina - Enjoy a scenic boat cruise to the Ballestas
Island to view thousands of sea birds circling overhead along with sea
lions basking in the sun. This nature reserve is a wonderful way to
view wildlife up close with minimal impact as no boats are permitted
to disembark. You will penguins, sea lions coming close to the boat
and thousands of marine birds who nest on the island rocks. You will
also view the mysterious Candelabrum whose origin and purpose is
still unknown.
Options: Walking in Paracas reserve, Ica museum, wine tasting, dune
buggies, sandboarding
Accommodation: Hotel included | Meals: Paid locally
Day 4 - Nazca - Next, try sand boarding or visit the baffling effigies
known as the Nazca Lines on a flight overhead and contemplate their
arcane meaning as archaeologists have been doing for centuries.
The Nazca lines are geoglyphs and geometric line clearings, made by
the Nazca people in the Peruvian desert. Dark red surface stones and
soil have been cleared away, exposing the lighter-coloured subsoil,
creating the “lines”. There is no sand in this desert and the Nazca
lines are not visible here. In fact a road was built through the lines
at a time when their existence was not known. However, from the
air, the “lines” include not only lines and geometric shapes, but also
depictions of animals and plants in stylized forms. Some of the forms,
including images of humans, grace the steep hillsides at the edge of
the desert.
Options: Nazca aqueducts
Accommodation: Hotels included | Meals paid locally
Day 5/6 - Arequipa - Continuing down the increasingly rugged coast,
we climb to panoramas over the ocean and arrive to the colonial city
of Arequipa, Peru’s second-largest city. Choose to visit the Santa
Catalina Convent or view the ice mummies at the Museum of Andean
Sanctuaries.
Options: Ice Mummies museum
Accommodation: Hotels included | Meals paid locally
Day 7/8 - Colca Canyon - Drive over a spectacular 5,000 metre pass
to Colca Canyon, where we will walk to the rim of the upper canyon
watching for condors, before soaking in local thermal springs. The
Colca Canyon is reportedly the deepest in the world, rumoured
to be twice as deep as Arizona’s Grand Canyon. Unlike most of the
Grand Canyon, portions of the Colca canyon are habitable, with pre-
Colombian terraced fields still supporting agriculture and human
life. Of course what brings increasingly more visitors each year, in
addition to the awesome sights, are the Andean condors. The condor
population of South America is unfortunately dwindling, but here in
Colca Canyon, visitors can see them at fairly close range as they float
on the rising thermals and scan for carrion far below them.
Accommodation: Hotels included | Meals paid locally
Day 9-11 - Puno, Lake Titicaca - Fully in the Andes now, we make
our way to Puno and Lake Titicaca. Here we navigate the lake via the
floating reed-islands of the Uros Indians and stay the night on tranquil
Amantani Island in a rustic village home.
The life of the Uros revolves around the Totora Reed, which grows
in the lake and is used to construct houses and boats, thereby
fostering the theory which led to Thor Heyerdahl’s Pacific journey
with Ra. They continually build up the reeds to keep themselves
afloat as the bottom reeds rot. It is said that the Uros began their
floating existence by constructing the islands to isolate themselves
from the infiltrating Inca tribes. You will notice the islands are no
longer as secluded and isolated as they once were however, still
quite a remarkable sight to see.
Accommodation: Hotels & basic homestay included | Meals paid
locally.
Day 12/13 - Cusco - Next, we embark for Cusco and the Sacred
Valley. We follow the pass over La Raya past the Inca ruins of Racchi
and Pucara. Alternatively you can choose to take the train from Puno
to Cusco in the Orient Express carriages off the Andean Explorer
travelling through the Andean plains and mountains, a rail journey
voted one of the world’s most beautiful. The train needs to be booked
before your trip so please request at the time of booking.
Cusco is alive itself, with a bustling nightlife, thriving indigenous
population and aesthetic ruins and architecture, it is easily one of the
most memorable and exciting cities in the Andes and the gateway to
the Sacred Valley and the Inca Trail. Enjoy a half day walking tour with
the guide.
Accommodation: Hotels included | Meals paid locally
Day 14/15 - Sacred Valley - Take time to relax and acclimatise for
the challenge that lies ahead. Yucay offers an abundance of optional
activities, including white-water rafting and mountain biking.
Options: Salt mines, white water rafting, mountain biking
Accommodation: Hotels included | Meals paid locally
Day 16 - Inca Trail - Llactapata - We wake early and make our way
by bus to Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley. This traditional Inca
village is overlooked by the magnificent fortress of Ollantay, the only
Inca stronghold ever to have resisted persistent Spanish attacks.
After visiting the impressive ruins we set off to the trailhead at Chilca,
where the gorge narrows, and meet our guide and crew for the start
the trek. Stretching our legs we follow the Urubamba riverbank below
the snow-capped peak of Mt Veronica. After lunch we head away from
the river and a gentle climb soon brings us to our pleasant campsite
at Llactapata (2850m).
Hiking Options: Approximately 4/5 hours easy walking today.
Accommodation: Camping included | Meals: All included
Day 17 - Inca Trail - Llulluchupampa - We are woken with a hot drink
of coca leaves delivered to our tents, to help ease the effects of the high
altitude, before beginning the day’s trek. Getting into a good walking
rhythm, we follow the course of the Cusichaca River, ascending a
broad valley to the village of Wayllabamba (‘Grassy Plain’ - 3000m),
the last human habitation on the trail. Here we can have a glass of
fortifying Chicha or maize beer to help us up the hill.
Our porters will go ahead and prepare lunch while we pause to rest
before climbing steadily and steeply to Llulluchupampa (3680m) - a
beautiful flat area of pasture.
Hiking Options: Approximately 5/6 hours moderate uphill walking.
Accommodation: Camping included | Meals: All included
Day 18: Inca Trail - Phuyopatamarka - The tough day! An initial steep
climb takes us across the highest point on the trail at Warmiwañusca
(Dead Woman’s Pass - 4200m); the views back along the valley
certainly make the climb worthwhile. We descend to the Pacamayo
River and a second ascent leads to Runkuracay Pass (3998m); from
here on the trail is largely downhill and we encounter the first long
stretches of original Inca paving which makes for easier going. After a
final easy ascent, with spectacular views over the Urubamba Valley far
below, we emerge above the Phuyupatamarca ruins.
Hiking Options: Approximately 7/8 hours moderate and demanding
walking.
Accommodation: Camping included | Meals: All included
Day 19 - Inca Trail - Machu Picchu - We awake to a spectacular vista
and set off this morning on one of the most beautiful parts of the trail. A
steep downhill section of some 2000 Inca steps brings us to our lunch
stop at the picturesque ruins of Winay Wayna; meaning ‘forever young’.
Excitement mounts as we conquer a steep flight of steps and arrive
at Inti Punku, the Sun Gate. The toil of the day is forgotten instantly
as we are treated to a spectacular view of Machu Picchu below. After
lingering to admire the panorama, we walk through the site and catch
a bus down the narrow access road to re-join the Urubamba River in
the village of Aguas Calientes where we can enjoy a well-earned long
shower.
Hiking Options: Approximately 4/5 hours walking today, mostly
downhill.
Accommodation: Hotel included | Meals: All included
Day 20 - Machu Picchu & Cusco - Rising early this morning we have
Machu Picchu ruins largely to ourselves before the train brings in the
first day visitors from Cusco. The magnificent lost city, discovered by
American archaeologist Hiram Bingham in 1911, stands on a high
saddle dominated by the jungle-clad peak of Wayna Picchu. We have
time to make the vertiginous climb to its summit for dramatic views of
the city spread out below or simply just wander the myriad of steps and
stairways of the site, revealing as they do a vast complex of immense
structural, historical and archaeological worth.
Later in the day we take the dreamy train ride back to Cusco for one
more day to explore the city, shop in the eclectic markets and meet
people from all over the Andes at your leisure.
Accommodation: Hotels included | Meals paid locally
Day 21 - Cusco - Enjoy a final day in Cusco to end the tour.
This tour ends at our gateway hotel at approximately 14:00 hrs. We can
book your post-tour accommodation at our gateway hotel if required.
covers you for the activities involved - be aware that some policies
do not include, or restrict, coverage for this type of travel. There
may be cheaper policies available, but this does not mean it may
be better value - we strongly advise you check fully what will and
won’t be covered. Any claims concerning matters for which you are
insured must be directed to your insurers.
HEALTH REQUIREMENTS
If you have any medical condition such as diabetes, epilepsy or
asthma, take prescribed medicines, or have a condition that will
affect your participation in the tour, you must tell us or your travel
agent at the time of booking. Please be aware we may require a
doctor’s note prior to travel for some conditions. This information
is essential in case of emergency. All of our vehicles carry a basic
first-aid kit, but for everyday use you should bring your own medical
supplies, such as pain relievers, antibiotic cream and upset stomach
relievers, in addition to sunscreen and insect repellent.
VACCINATIONS
Recommended vaccinations for Latin America include Hepatitis A
& B, Typhoid, Rabies, Yellow Fever and Dengue but please consult
your doctor or vaccination centre for up-to-date information. We
recommend that you contact a physician or travel medicine clinic
at least two months before travel in order to allow enough time
for any immunisations that may be required to be completed. This
is especially true for those planning travel to tropical areas or
developing countries. A health professional will be able to assess
your individual need for immunisations or preventative medication
depending on your health situation, previous immunisation history
and your travel itinerary. Information prior to your consultation
with a doctor can be obtained from the ‘Fit for Travel’ website
http://www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk/. There are malarial regions in Latin
America and it is recommended to consult your GP vaccination
centre for the most up to date information.
What you need for your tour
SPENDING MONEY
We recommend you take at least USD$55 dollars per person per
day to cover local expenses, but it’s better to bring more than you
need rather than run short on tour. Your spending money needs to
cover meals and drinks, optional activities, personal expenses such
as laundry, souvenirs and snacks along the way. ATM/Cash points
are widely available in all major cities and small towns, but may be
limited in some off the beaten track destinations, so we suggest you
have USD$200 with you in cash. Please ensure that your credit or
debit cards have international access and a PIN number to access
your funds at the start of the tour.
PRE-PAID CURRENCY CARDS
It is personal preference as to how you take your money and it’s
recommended to take some cash with you to be prepared when you
arrive, but Grand American Adventures is pleased to endorse FairFX
prepaid currency cards. Please ask one of our sales consultants or
click on the link www.fairfx.com/trekamerica to find out how to
receive a FREE currency card, worth a retail value of £9.95.
TIPPING
Although it may not be customary in your country, it is normal and
expected in Latin America to tip local service providers or any type
of guide. Service workers are paid a low wage and depend upon
their tips for their livelihood. A minimum of 10% is standard in
restaurants. Your tour leader also works long and hard for you, so
if the leader’s performance meets or exceeds your expectations, we
recommend you consider a tip of USD$5-7 per person, per day, in
appreciation of the service you receive.
LUGGAGE ALLOWANCE
Each passenger will be allowed one bag, backpack or suitcase (20kg
maximum). A small daypack and camera may also be carried in our
vehicle.
SLEEPING BAGS
Our camping tours require you to take a warm, three season sleeping
bag. We will supply a sleeping pad. For added comfort you may wish
to take a small camping style pillow or Thermarest. For the Inca Trail
a sleeping bag can be hired at US$30. This should be requested from
your tour leader at the beginning of your trip.
PACKING TIPS
Clothing
Please keep in mind that our dress tends to be informal. It is advised
that you take a practical selection of clothes for both warm and
cool climates to suit the season. Please see the temperature guide
showing the highs and lows that can be expected in key locations
that your tour visits. However please remember that this is just a
guide and you may encounter a wide variety of temperatures en
best to be prepared!
Besides your essential clothing, here’s a checklist of other items
you should take:
• Waterproof jacket
• Warm sweater / fleece
• Casual ‘evening out’ clothes
• Pillowcase / Sleeping bag liner
• Hiking shoes / boots
• Comfortable day shoes
• Sandals or flip-flops
good ankle support will make all walking more enjoyable. If you do
not own a pair, then trainers/sneakers will suffice.
CLOTHES WASHING
You will have the opportunity to wash your clothes whilst you are on
tour, and this can often be done at the hotel or in a local town. Ask
your tour leader for local information.
BATTERY CHARGING
Many of our travellers bring mobile phones, music devices and
cameras that require frequent battery charging during a tour.
For hotel tours your hotel room will have an electrical outlet (just
remember your international adaptor!) You may want to consider
bringing extra batteries to avoid missing out on that amazing
photograph. Please note there is nowhere to charge your batteries
whilst on the Inca Trail.
Keeping in touch
Please check with your network provider as to whether your
mobile phone will work in Latin America. Grand American
Adventures has partnered with e-kit to provide some of the
cheapest ways to keep in touch with family and friends while on
tour. E-kit can provide international calling cards, pre-paid SIMs
or international mobile handsets. All Grand American Adventures
about our tours
Transportation
All of our private vehicles are designed to ensure your safety, comfort
and enjoyment of the tour. We use vehicles which are smaller in size
and allow us to reach the more remote destinations not accessible
to larger vehicles. All our vehicles are equipped with stereo systems
health and safety standards.
basis (two people per room) unless you are travelling as a couple.
There are no single supplements on our tours, however if you’d like
your own space, you can request a single room for an additional fee
when booking your tour. At times in the more remote areas we will
choose the most preferable accommodation option available which
can be of a more basic nature. This will always be made clear in the
daily itinerary.
SECURITY
No matter where you find yourself in the world, you need to look
after your valuables. In general, the safest place for items such as
passports, flight tickets and cash is on your person or in a hotel safe
where available, and do not leave valuables in the vehicle. When in
doubt consult your tour leader.
We would like to remind you that you are ultimately responsible for
your safety and well-being. Whether you are taking public transport,
going for a hike or taking part in an optional activity, we request that
you carry yourself in a mature and responsible manner - not only
for your own personal safety, but for that of the group and other
travellers.
MEALS
On camping tours, all of the meals are included whilst camping.
Your tour leader will coordinate local shopping and assist the
group in preparing healthy, hearty breakfasts, picnic lunches and
delicious dinners.
Whilst in hotels you will usually eat out in local restaurants. To
help you budget for your meals on average hotel breakfasts cost
from USD$6-$12, lunches from USD$8-$15 and dinners from
USD$13-$30; this does not include alcoholic beverages. Wine
costs approximately USD$5 per glass and beer USD$4 per bottle.
These prices were correct at the time this information was created.
Please also be aware that a tip of approximately 10% is generally
expected throughout Latin America.
Your Tour Leader
Your tour leader will also take care of all the planning and organisation
throughout your tour, they will drive the van taking you from A to B
and make sure everything runs smoothly. Your tour leaders are there
to make sure you get the most out of your tour; organising activities,
providing information and answering any questions you may have as
well as sorting out any queries or problems you may encounter. If you
have any particular interests or things you would like to do on your
tour, then please let your tour leaders know at the beginning of the
tour and they will do their best to help you.
On our walking tours you will be accompanied by local leaders, who
will offer additional support to ensure everyone gets the most out of
their trek. As interests and capabilities vary, our leaders will typically
guide according to group’s needs and the difficulty of particular
hikes. Our leaders enjoy spending as much time as possible on the
trail with their groups however please bear in mind that it will not
always be possible for a tour leader to accompany every hiker due
to varying fitness levels.
CAMP DUTIES
An essential part of a camping tour is helping out with the day to day
camp duties and everyone will assist with the setting up and packing
up of the campsite. Your tour leader will provide guidance on what to
do, and typically it will only take 15 minutes to set up or break down
the tents and camp kitchen. Before you know it you’ll be enjoying
‘home sweet home’ in the Great Outdoors.
Your tour leader will also co-ordinate and assist the group with
food shopping, preparing meals and cleaning up. Sharing the camp
duties is a great way to bond with your fellow travellers and the
group camaraderie is all part of the experience.
things in common with your fellow travellers, including a passion
for discovery and a strong interest in exploring the National Parks.
Grand American Adventures tours are designed for adults over 18
years old. While most passengers are aged 25-55, every year we
get many people both above and below this age range. All travellers
over the age of 70 will be requested to complete a self-declaration
of fitness form prior to travel.
Our tours are a unique holiday experience and much of your
enjoyment will come from the team spirit of your group and the fun
you’ll have together, as well as from the local setting. We cannot
stress strongly enough the importance of bringing a positive
attitude with you on tour; a sure guarantee to enjoying each and
every moment, even in the adversity of the odd rainstorm!
RESPONSIBLE and sustainable TRAVEL
We are committed to offering low impact tours that benefit both
the places and communities we visit as well as our travellers. It is
important for us all to be aware of the delicate balance that exists
in the variety of natural wonders you will visit. National Parks and
monuments, archaeological sites and other sensitive areas should
and must be treated with respect.
We have created a ‘Travellers’ Code of Conduct’ to help prepare and
inform our groups of the various positive or negative effects they
could have on a destination. The code includes tips on everything from
handling wildlife encounters to how you can help to conserve precious
natural resources. Our tour leaders will explain this code of conduct
during the first night’s orientation talk and encourage you to follow it
throughout the tour.
This code includes following the ‘Leave No Trace’ ethic, this is an
international campaign that is designed to help us minimise the
impact on the National Parks and other wilderness areas that we
visit. Some key guidelines we follow include keeping to existing trails,
staying in official campgrounds and disposing of all waste responsibly
and recycling whatever we can.
We are proud supporters of the American Hiking Society, which
champions conservation issues in the United States and represents
millions of hikers committed to preserving America’s vast network of
hiking trails and their surrounding ecosystems.
Whenever possible, we use local accommodation and activity
providers. We also shop locally for groceries, eat in small family-run
restaurants and visit local shops whenever possible. This all brings
economic benefit to the local communities that we visit.
Responsible Tourism on Classic Peru...
This tour visits and overnights in the UNESCO World Heritage
Sites of Lima, Cusco, Arequipa, Nazca Lines and Machu Picchu
with investment into local businesses and services providers in
each of these places.
The tour is led by one of our fully trained local guides to ensure
money is reinvested back into the economy and provides
training and jobs for younger people.
When this tour is not camping, we overnight in locally owned
hotels and lodges. We also endeavour to eat our meals in
locally owned, family-run restaurants, which let passengers
experience local flavour. Throughout the trip we utilize
established local suppliers for activities that help support local
business and keep money in the community. There are also
opportunities for clients to support local communities at local
markets and shops.
Whilst on the Inca Trail we only use local and experienced
Peruvians porters to assist with luggage, camping equipment
and food. This money helps feed into the pockets of local
families and communities.
We visit the floating reed islands of the Uros Indians and the
island of Taquile. The life of the Uros revolves around the Totora
Reed which grows in the lake and is used to construct houses
and boats. Life hasn’t changed much and it is this visit that which
allows you to experience their customs and culture, purchase
hand-made crafts to learn more about the importance, and
further preserve these artisan skills for generations to come.
Your local tour leader will be able to direct you to local eateries
throughout the trip, helping you discover real local fare at real
local prices (and probably helping you learn some Spanish at
the same time). All travellers are encouraged to explore with
the group and on their own, learn a few words of the language
and interact with the locals as much as possible.
Local guides are employed to help explain as much as possible
about the cultural differences and the historically significant
places that we visit. This also allows us to appreciate the
importance of preserving and respecting these sites and to help
us minimise the impact of our visits.
There are plenty of opportunities to support local merchants
in the markets and stalls that we pass along the way. We can
purchase traditional handicrafts from local artisans and learn
more about the importance of preserving these crafts.
