President’s Message

This year is no different for my
family and me
Our lantern on the stern shines on
our place in NAELA’s family history,
Shines in our space of kindred spirits,
Guiding us on uncharted paths of
future dreams and direction.
The NAELA Family
The history of NAELA is a showcase
of those who lead the country in
elder law.
From starting the first certification
in elder law;
To legislative advocacy over OBRA
’93 and BBA ’97;
To litigation and amicus advocacy
for the rights of older Americans,
NAELA has labored in all areas of
elder law, providing support for its
members in sustaining and serving
their clients.
From ‘88 to ‘98, the history of
NAELA is an identity forged in the
aging frontier,
Molding the very essence of elder
law;
Defining the scope and the standards
by which elder law is practiced; and,
Creating a conduit through which
elder law attorneys have communicated.
Even more, the history of NAELA is a
continuing convocation of colleagues
Where members return year after year
to receive the invocation of kindred
spirits.
The Spirit
The intuitive notion is that we are
kindred spirits
Do you remember Vincent, Ira and me
The Italian, the Jew and the Arab -
Kindred spirits
In this life joined by magical, mystical,
heavenly spirits
Theresa and Justin
Spiritual intermediaries between our
families and God
Angels who because of faith and belief
Brought the Theresa Foundation to life

Brought you here
And guide you
On uncharted paths of future dreams
and direction.
Its the same spirit that embraced the
NAELA founders,
the same spirit that drove NAELA
presidents through the first decade of
NAELA’s leadership.
The same spirit that continues to drive
many of them long after their terms,
Along with Vincent and Ira, consider
Cindy Barrett’s undaunted commitment
to raise and enlighten elder law
attorneys to serve their clients on a
higher plane,
Consider Clifton Kruse’s pastoral,
but powerful admonitions to elder law
attorneys to serve their clients with
compassion ,
Consider Scott Severns’ tireless
charge to elder law attorneys to
advocate and litigate against those
who are abusing, neglecting and
injuring their clients
and consider Allan Bogutz’s practical
wisdom to instill in elder law
