Phalaena pygarga Hufnaoel, 1766 (Berl. Mag. 3: 408, by present designation.)<br />

Frons smooth without prominences; labial palpus upturned, <strong>its</strong> tip reaching<br />

to vertex <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> 2nd fringed with scales in front; antenna ventrally minutely<br />

ciliated in male, <strong>and</strong> more sparsely <strong>and</strong> shorter ciliated in female. The<br />

number<strong>of</strong>dorsal crests <strong>of</strong>abdomen varied <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> basal one to four amongeach<br />

species. Fore wing with rounded apex; termen excurved at vein 4; 9 <strong>and</strong> 10<br />

anastomosing with 8 formingan areole. Hind wing with veins3 <strong>and</strong> 4 not stalked<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>from</strong> lower angle <strong>of</strong> cell; 5 well developed <strong>and</strong> <strong>from</strong> below middle <strong>of</strong> discocellulars.<br />

Wing pattern various <strong>from</strong> typical noctudis form to much modified<br />

one.
