International Symposium on<br />

Female Calligraphers<br />

symposium was devoted to “Female Calligraphers”: through 4-6<br />

A June 2010, <strong>IRCICA</strong>, the Metropolitan Municipality of Istanbul and<br />

the Turkish Prime Ministry’s Promotion Fund organised different events<br />

it comprised. The Prime Minister of Turkey H.E. Mr. Recep Tayyip<br />

Erdoğan gave his patronage to it and the opening address.<br />

The contributions of female calligraphers to the development of this art,<br />

their status in art circles and society, their works in the past and at present<br />

and at different places, were among the subjects discussed during the<br />

plenary by specialists, teachers, and artists. Another component of the<br />

symposium was a ceremony whereby a group of teachers of calligraphy,<br />

namely Ayten Tiryaki, Fevzi Günüç, Hasan Çelebi, Hüseyin Kutlu and<br />

Hüseyin Öksüz gave Ijazas to twenty-four calligraphers they had trained.<br />

Plaques of gratitude were presented to teachers having trained a number<br />

of female calligraphers: Ali Rıza Özcan, Ayten Tiryaki, Betül Kırkan,<br />

Davut Bektaş, Efdalüddin Kılıç, Erol Dönmez, Fevzi Günüç, Feyza<br />

Kırkan, Fuat Başar, Hasan Çelebi, Hüseyin Kutlu and Hüseyin Öksüz<br />

received plaques. Talks were given by: Ms. Ayten Tiryaki (Turkey), on<br />

“Women’s Place in Calligraphy Art in Turkey”; Ms. Elaheh Khatami<br />

(Iran), on “Works of Female Calligraphers in Iran”; Ms. Soraya Syed<br />

Sanders (UK), “Calligraphy Education in Europe”; Ms. Nuria Garcia<br />

Masip (Spain), on “Female Calligraphers in the World”; Ms. Zübeyde<br />

Cihan Özsayıner (Turkey), on “Female Calligraphers of the Ottoman<br />

Period”; Ms. Rachida Dimassi (Tunisia), on “Female Calligraphers in the<br />

Arab World”. Calligraphy workshops were conducted by Iranian, European and Turkish calligraphers.<br />

An exhibition was organized by <strong>IRCICA</strong> presenting a total of 160 works of 62 female calligraphers from Iran, Iraq, Spain, Syria,<br />

Turkey, UAE, UK. <strong>IRCICA</strong> also published and distributed the catalogue of the exhibition. The latter was on display for two<br />

weeks.<br />
