IAM (the Innovation Access Method) is a reliable,
high-performance disk file manager that can be used
in place of VSAM KSDS (and with AIX), RRDS or VSAM
ESDS datasets for batch, TSO and online processing.
IAM offers a level of performance and reduction in the use
of computer system resources which provides substantial
savings for applications that utilise VSAM datasets.
IAM drastically reduces DASD space requirements.
IAM utilises a sophisticated buffering mechanism, called
Real Time Tuning that responds quickly to the I/O demands
of application programs, resulting in substantial decreases
in physical I/O.
Typical Savings with IAM
on VSAM KSDS files:
• 40-80% Reduction in I/O’s (EXCP’s)
• 20-70% Reduction in CPU usage
• 30-50% Reduction in DASD space usage
• 20-80% Reduction in Batch Elapsed Times
• 50-80% Reduction in Online Response Times

You Can Improve VSAM Performance By:
Upgrading to a larger CPU or to faster DASD
Converting the files to use hardware
compression and VSAM extended format
Ongoing tuning to react to changes to how
the file is being used
Or…
IAM User Experiences:
Our Cards applications have had problems for a number
of years with a large Visionplus VSAM file that had grown
to over 35 GB and required frequent maintenance. The
conversion was performed in early August and reduced the
size of the dataset to 6 GB but more importantly reduced
the run time of the main batch job that processed the file by
between 3.5 to 5 hours, depending on the day of the week.
We use IAM extensively. We have bigger than 20+ GB
and are getting subsecond response time with one of
our annuity applications in CICS.
This report displays VSAM file usage (sorted by EXCPs) over a 30 day period.
We converted the files on MVSDEVL to IAM and the
batch execution time went from 40 minutes to 8 minutes.
We have 50% reduction in elapsed time and 20% reduction
in CPU time after using IAM on Certegy’s BASE2000 credit
card application.
With the IAMSMFVS analysis program,
it is easy to identify VSAM files that have the
most activity and the best candidates to convert
from VSAM to IAM.
Did you know…
Despite the universal acceptance of DB2, a
significant amount of VSAM datasets exist in
your data center with 3rd party products that
you use or with inhouse applications?
Get started by requesting your FREE copy of the IAMSMFVS analysis program and you will see how IAM can help you speed up
your daily processing without a CPU upgrade. Call Innovation at: +31-36-5341660 or E-mail to: nlsales@fdrinnovation.com
