IAM - Innovation Data Processing

IAM (the Innovation Access Method) is a reliable,
high-performance disk file manager that can be used
in place of VSAM KSDS (and with AIX), RRDS or VSAM
ESDS datasets for batch, TSO and online processing.
IAM offers a level of performance and reduction in the use
of computer system resources which provides substantial
savings for applications that utilise VSAM datasets.
IAM drastically reduces DASD space requirements.
IAM utilises a sophisticated buffering mechanism, called
Real Time Tuning that responds quickly to the I/O demands
of application programs, resulting in substantial decreases
in physical I/O.

IAM User Experiences:
Our Cards applications have had problems for a number
of years with a large Visionplus VSAM file that had grown
to over 35 GB and required frequent maintenance. The
conversion was performed in early August and reduced the
size of the dataset to 6 GB but more importantly reduced
the run time of the main batch job that processed the file by
between 3.5 to 5 hours, depending on the day of the week.
We use IAM extensively. We have bigger than 20+ GB
and are getting subsecond response time with one of
our annuity applications in CICS.

This report displays VSAM file usage (sorted by EXCPs) over a 30 day period.
We converted the files on MVSDEVL to IAM and the
batch execution time went from 40 minutes to 8 minutes.
We have 50% reduction in elapsed time and 20% reduction
in CPU time after using IAM on Certegy’s BASE2000 credit
card application.
