The Roswell Chamber of Commerce hosted The 14th Annual Roswell, New Mexico, “Hike It! and Spike It!” 4-on-4 Charity Flag Football Tournament to benefit the United Way of Chaves County Friday, May 22nd, Saturday, May 23rd, and Sunday, May 24th, MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND 2009. A check in the amount of $5,000.00 was presented to Harvey Robertson from United Way of Chaves County at Opening Ceremonies Saturday, May 23rd. Additional money was raised on site throughout the “Hike It & Spike It” weekend. 465 teams (2,800+ players) from 17 states participated in the largest “HIKE IT & SPIKE IT” tournament in the world. An estimated crowd of over 32,000 people was on hand during the three day football extravaganza. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, Character Counts!/Sportsmanship and Down & Out Bowl awards were presented in all thirty two divisions - except the “SHOW ME THE MONEY” division. This division featured $15,000.00 in cash prizes! and maintained the traditional double elimination format. All teams in the regular divisions were guaranteed three games, provided individual player shirts and sponsor gratuities. Once again, the Character Counts! winning team in each division received a “FREE” entry into next year’s event. Selected by the Zebra (Field Monitor) teams were rewarded for their “FIRED UP” IN ROSWELL! outstanding sportsmanship and for “Pursuing Victory with Honor”. We are already actively pursuing sponsors for all levels of the tournament for next year. Sponsor plaques have been presented to all major sponsors. The Roswell GridIron Executive Committee is “FIRED UP!” for next year’s 15th Annual 2010 Roswell “Hike It & Spike It” 4-on-4 Charity Flag Football Tournament. 4
Character Counts! In Chaves County is concluding their various projects for the 2008/2009 school year. The Spring Athlete Recognition Program concluded in April as coaches from throughout the county recognized the athlete in his or her program who best exemplified the six pillars of character during the school year. Thank you to all our area Media for their outstanding support. The “Pursuing Victory With Honor” Coaches Recognition Program selected and honored the Spring Sports High School Coaches of the Year at the conclusion of the spring campaign. Character Counts! in Chaves County, PrimeSource Mortgage and The Roswell National Bank are proud to expand into the realm of identifying and honoring coaches of character throughout our county. This year’s Avon Wilson American Character Awards Program presented by the Roswell Sertoma Club and Character Counts! in Chaves County, was Tuesday, April 07, 2009, at the Roswell Convention and Civic Center. This year’s honorees were selected through the nomination process CHARACTER COUNTS! IN CHAVES COUNTY within the various school districts and mayors’ offices in Chaves County. We recognized over 120 people of character. The American Character Awards Program is designed to identify and honor people of: uncompromising integrity and courage demonstrated by a willingness to do the right thing despite social pressures or personal risk, generosity of spirit and a willingness for selfsacrifice in devotion to helping others, community service in working for the common good, and perseverance and inner strength enabling the individual to overcome physical, financial or other difficulties. We were proud to dedicate the event in memory of Avon Wilson, a community leader of outstanding character, one whose character counted throughout her life. As State Representative for District 59 from 2000 thru 2006, Avon was a champion for Character Counts! in Chaves County and through her sacrifice and commitment to fulfilling her responsibilities as a State Representative; she exemplified the pillar of good character citizenship. Her lifelong dedication to service of others in supporting thousands of adults in remedying deficits in their education and her dedication and commitment to Character Counts! in Chaves County, served as an inspiration to us all. With the ongoing support of everyone we know Character Counts! In Chaves County will continue to establish and encourage those values which are recognized by all; Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship. For further information please contact the Character Counts! office 623-5695 Ex. 20 or visit us online at: CCCCNM.org BILLY THE KID OUTLAW GANG Billy the Kid Outlaw Gang (BTKOG) is a non-profit New Mexico Historical Society; its purpose is to preserve and promote the history of Billy the Kid Bonney and Pat Garrett in New Mexico. Annual dues are $25 individuals and $30 for couples or families. Membership is open to all who are interested in 1880’s era history, not just residents of New Mexico. Members are from many countries besides USA. Every year in July the group holds a campout. This year it is July 16 through July 20. Friday and Saturday are the primary days, with campfire meals, guest speakers, a nearby field trip and games for kids; the first and last days are dedicated to setting up and taking down camp.
