Abrasive Cutting Troubleshooting Guide
Problem Possible Cause Suggested Remedy
Burning (bluish Overheated specimen Increase coolant flow rate; reduce cutting pressure; select a wheel
discoloration)
with softer bonding (faster breakdown)
Rapid wheel wear Wheel bonding breaks down too rapidly Select a wheel with harder bonding; reduce cutting pressure
Sectioning
Frequent wheel Uneven coolant distribution; loose specimen Adjust coolant flow to be even on both sides of the wheel;
breakage fixturing; abrupt contact with specimen clamp the specimen more securely; start cut contact carefully
Wheel breakage Wheel was previously cracked Handle carefully, contact Buehler
at start up
Resistance to Slow wheel bond breakdown Select a wheel with softer bonding; use a “pulse” cutting mode;
cutting
use cutter with oscillating motion or with minimum area of contact
cutting* ability
Stalled wheels Inadequate cutter capacity; pinched Use cutter with greater horsepower; tighten the clamp on one
blade due to movement of specimen
side less than on the other side; reduce pressure or feed rate;
use a with cutter oscillating motion or with MACC ability
Precision Cutting Tips, Tricks & Techniques:
For the best performance and longer life from your blades:
■ Always tightly clamp your samples
■ Use double saddle chuck for long parts, such as rods
■ DO NOT hand dress
■ Encapsulate spheres, unusual shapes, friable materials
■ Use appropriate flange size
■ Soft materials can build up during cut and can cause blade
breakage, do not cut such materials unattended. For extremely
gummy materials dress during cut
■ Wash machine out frequently
Tip
Dressing of PetroThin® blades is best done by attaching a portion of the dressing stick (15-6190) to a glass slide and sectioning the
dressing stick as if it were a sample. Attaching the dressing stick to the slide can be done quickly using Crystalbond wax. Because of the
vacuum chuck positioning relative to the blade there is no need to attach a portion of the stick thicker than about 4√” . This thickness is
sufficient to make two passes through the stick. New blades should be dressed with two passes through the 1” x 1” cross-section of this
stick slowly, taking a few minutes for each pass. Subsequent dressing will typically require only one pass through the stick.
Compression Mounting Compounds
Tips, Tricks & Techniques:
For best performance of your mounting press and media:
■ Do not compression mount soft, low melting point alloys, wood,
plastic or very friable materials. Castable mounting media will
provide better results.
■ Apply Release Agent 20-8185-002 to mold for easy removal.
■ To permanently label specimens when using opaque mount
media, fill most of the mold cylinder with mount media before
adding a thin layer of TransOptic media. Place a typed label
over the TransOptic powder, then cover it with a second layer of
TransOptic powder. When cured, this preserves the label in a
clear layer of media for easy sample identification.
■ To eliminate ”cotton balls” in TransOptic mounts, increase cool
time and/or reduce molding temperature for improved mount
clarity.
■ Reheating TransOptic mounts to 110 °C for 15 – 30 minutes will
allow for the removal of the sample. Wearing heat-resistant
gloves, apply pressure to the media near the sample with
pliers. This should flex the mount, allowing the media to break
away from the sample with increasing pressure.
■ Mounting samples off-center for EBSD evaluation facilitates
beam positioning.
Troubleshooting:
■ Mount media that appears frosted or unfused from the
mounting press is often a sign of insufficient molding
temperatures. Check to ensure the temperature setting on
the mounting press is 150 °C or higher and that the heating
element is tightened on the mold cylinder. For the SimpliMet®
1000 and 3000 Mounting Presses, this is done by turning
the cylinder locking screw counter-clockwise until the screw
is loose.
■ Uncured mounts can be caused by too much moisture in
the media. Ensure that containers are properly closed
between uses.
■ Ensure that enough mounting media is placed into mold to
sufficiently cover the sample. If not enough mount media is
used, the mounting media may not be compressed enough to
cure properly and could cause damage to the mold cylinders
and ram assembly.
■ Radial splitting of cured mounts is often caused by samples
with sharp corners or those that are too large for the mold size.
Reducing sample size and/or grinding off sharp corners is
recommended.
■ Excessive shrinkage is related to the thermal expansion
coefficient of the media and can be minimized by fully cooling
specimens under pressure in the mounting press. To minimize
shrinkage, the specimen should be cooled to room
temperature before removal from the mounting press.
Castable Mounting Compounds
Tips, Tricks & Techniques:
For best results using epoxy systems:
■ Mix using accurate resin to hardener ratios
■ Mix thoroughly: using a 3 cup mixing technique, mixing is
more thorough
■ Post cure heating for 2 hours at 50° C (122 °F) can increase
hardness
■ Preheating unmixed systems reduces viscosity
■ Heat mixed epoxy except EpoKwick, to decrease cure time;
every increase of 10° C (50 °F) reduces gel time by 50%.
■ Mix 25-90ml of epoxy in a single batch; mixing more than
90ml at a time can cause over-exotherming even when poured
into smaller mounts
■ Use EpoHeat® for very large mounts in single pours
■ Clean up any spills or drips with paper towel and ethanol
■ Wear gloves
■ Prepare sample under a fume hood, if possible
■ Use Cast’N Vac or Cast’N Vac 1000
■ Better to use the EPDM molds, reduces leakage
■ Use release agent to coat mold for easy removal of sample
■ For a video demonstration on measuring and mixing go to
www.buehler.com/epoheat.htm
What you should know:
■ Do not use disposable plastic castable mounting cups with
high exotherm systems.
■ Do not use Conductive Filler with EpoHeat® because of the low
viscosity; the filler will sink to the bottom so the entire mount
will NOT be conductive. Best to sputter coat the sample if it
needs to be conductive. Conductive Filler works with any other
Buehler Epoxy or Acrylic system.
■ EpoHeat® systems may crystallize, due to the chemical purity of
the product, ranging from gelled to rock hard consistency
inside the container. To relieve this condition, the entire
container should be placed in an oven up to 50 °C (122 °F) for
approximately two hours. If product is still crystallized after two
hours, extend the time in the oven until the crystallization is
relieved.
Castable Accessories:
Release Agent – Used for coating the mounting cup for easy
release. Use every time with EPDM mounting cups. See pg 21 for a
list of part numbers.
SamplKlip®, SamplKlip® 1, Specimen Support Clips, UniClips®
– Good for supporting sample orientation in the mounting cup.
See pg 20 for a list of part numbers.
Reusable EPDM Mounting Cups -Can use with any Castable or
Compression Mounting System. See page 19 for a list of part
numbers.
Conductive Filler - If you need conductive castable mounts for
SEM, EDS, and WDS, use Conductive Filler. See page 22 for a list of
part numbers.
Castable Mounting Accessories
Buehler SamplKlips®, Specimen Support Clips and UniClips® are intended for use in supporting specimens during mounting for
metallographic preparation. The choice of clip will depend on the mounting method and specimen geometry. All of these products are
compatible with all Buehler castable media types (epoxy and acrylic). Specimen support clips are not recommended for compression
mounting. The SamplKlip® is compatible with compression mounting, however the UniClip® is perhaps best suited to compressionmounting,
though the UniClip® must be oriented with the “legs” upward to prevent collapse during mounting.
The weight and relative hardness of the clips should be considered when choosing a clip. The stainless steel SamplKlip® is the heaviest
clip, but may be too hard for use when preparing a soft material. The UniClip® is the next heaviest clip and is softer, making it more
compatible with soft materials. For metallic specimens that are to be etched after preparation, one of the polymer clips (SamplKlip® I,
Specimen Support Clip, or UniClip®) is best to prevent interference with etching due to a stainless steel clip in contact with the
specimen.
Specimen thickness will influence choice of clip type as follows:
Clip Type
Approximate Compatible Specimen Thickness
Spec Support Clip, UniClip®
0.0035” to 0.090” (0.9mm to 2.3mm)
SamplKlip®, SamplKlip® I (large and small) up to 0.200” (5mm)
Use the product dimensions listed below to ensure compatibility of these products with specimens.
Conductive Filler and Pigments for Castable Mounts
Conductive Filler
Blue, Red and Black Pigments
Conductive Filler - If you need conductive castable mounts for
SEM, EDS, or WDS work, then you need Buehler's
Conductive Filler. Adding this nickel based filler to Buehler's
epoxies or acrylics makes your mounts conductive.
Castable Mount Pigments allow you to enhance the contrast
between your specimen and any of our epoxy or acrylic mounting
compounds.
While these pigments color code and enhance contrast, they do
not infiltrate pores and cannot be used as a substitute for
Grinding/Polishing Technical Information & Metal Bonded Grinding Discs
Tips, Tricks & Techniques:
■ In selecting a grinding surface, choose the finest abrasive that will efficiently achieve planarity
■ To choose which type of grinding surfaces consider:
- CarbiMet® 2 if you process many types of materials. Use 1-2 minutes.
- Apex® DGD or DGD Color for very hard materials, fewer grinding steps, controlled material removal and less change over.
If material or mount media is gummy, dress.
- FibrMet® or UltraPrep® Lapping Films for small fragile specimens, electronics and fiber optics
■ Polishing cloths typically last 20 cycles
■ Diamond suspensions contain enough lubricant that they do not require an extender
■ Diamond pastes should be used with MetaDi® Fluid or another extender
Apex® CGD (Coarse Grinding Disc)
Apex® CGD: aggressive metal bonded diamond discs designed for continuous use and high material
removal rates on hard to grind materials. Excellent results with: tool steels, tungsten carbide, hard ceramics
and titanium. Apex® CGD is a consumable of choice for Zaxis controlled material removal.
MetaDi® Supreme Diamond Suspensions & Pastes
MetaDi® Supreme Suspensions (left) are non-toxic,
non- combustible, and environmentally safe polycrystalline diamond
suspensions which have a greater number of cutting facets than
monocrystalline diamond and higher removal rates. These provide
reduced subsurface deformation and are ideal when working with
samples composed of different materials or hardnesses.
MetaDi® Supreme Diamond Pastes (right) offer the same benefits
as our MetaDi® Supreme Suspensions in paste form. This product is
Diamond Polishing Suspensions & Pastes
MetaDi® Diamond Suspensions & Pastes
MetaDi® Diamond Suspension
MetaDi® II Diamond Paste
MetaDi® Diamond Polishing Compounds are the standard of the
industry for critical sample preparation processes. The unique
formulation of MetaDi® compounds makes them the best for use in
metallographic, petrographic, and ceramographic polishing
applications. MetaDi® diamond compounds are a premium product
that utilize natural (in MetaDi® Paste formula) and synthetic (in
MetaDi® Suspension and MetaDi® II Paste formula) diamond graded
for particle size as well as shape. The diamond carrier is formulated
to keep the diamond from loading up and to maintain its cutting
efficiency through the life of the polishing surface. Water based
suspensions are recommended for most applications. Oil based
suspensions are recommended only for materials that are water
sensitive or where more lubrication is necessary.
Effective 2011 51

Buehler Education Schedule
CALCE (Center for Advanced Life Cycle Engineering - University of Maryland) / Buehler
Failure Analysis of Electronic Components
CALCE / BUEHLER FAILURE
ANALYSIS OF ELECTRONIC
COMPONENTS
Failure analysis is an important tool in the
effort to ensure reliability of electronic
products and systems throughout their
product lifecycle. Significant
improvements in the reliability of
electronics can be achieved by retrieving
products and examining them to
determine the root cause of any failures
and the extent of degradation which has
occurred over time. Root cause failure
analysis employs a sequence of
non-destructive and destructive
analytical techniques to characterize the
modes by which failure is manifested, the
sites where failure is localized, the
fundamental mechanical, electrical,
chemical and electrochemical
mechanisms by which failure has
occurred, and the factors which
precipitated the activation of those
mechanisms.
Unfortunately, failure analysis is often
performed incorrectly or incompletely,
leading to a poor understanding of failure
mechanisms and causes, and loss of
money, customers, and possibly lives due
to recurrence of failures. The first half of
the short course will present a
methodology for identifying potential
failure mechanisms in electronic
components based on the failure history.
Systematic approaches to root cause
analysis will be provided. Failure analysis
techniques geared towards various failure
mechanisms will be discussed, with an
emphasis on cross-sectioning techniques
and analysis.
Cross-sectional analysis is a valuable tool
for failure analysis of electronic devices
along with quality evaluation, research
and process monitoring. Successful use of
this technique is often complicated by the
highly dissimilar properties of the
component materials under investigation
and their susceptibility to damage.
Emphasis will be placed on how to deal
with these differences through an
understanding of the component
materials to be prepared and the basic
principles of abrasive grinding and
polishing. Techniques for low-damage
sectioning and the procedures required to
prevent preparation induced damage are
discussed.
The second half of this short course
provides guidance on how to choose
preparation sequences depending on the
materials, the configuration of the
specimens and the ultimate purpose of
the investigation. The short course stresses
the need to understand the basic
principles rather than simply following
'“recipes". The goal of specimen
preparation is to produce a damage-free
surface that can be imaged and analyzed
through the use of microscopy. Methods
for capturing images and quantifying
features through the use of image analysis
will be discussed and demonstrated. This
course is recommended for persons who
wish to conduct failure analysis on
electronic products such as PWBs, wafers,
solid state devices and components.
This course will be taught jointly by Center
