FROM THE PRINCIPAL
NAPLAN TESTS
It has been a very busy week for our Year 7 and 9
students who sat for the NAPLAN tests in Literacy
and Numeracy over the three days Tuesday through
to Thursday. I spoke with each year group prior to
the tests and emphasised the importance of doing
well both for their sense of achieving their personal
best and so that our school staff can use their results
to diagnose areas for future development and
improvement. I would like to pass on my thanks to all
students for the way that they cooperated with staff
during the tests. I look forward to analysing results
when they are released mid-way through the year.
SYDNEY UNIVERSITY RESEARCH STUDY
On Friday, some of our Year 7, 8 and 9 students
participated in a survey being conducted by Sydney
University as part of a research study into student
well-being and academic aspirations. The researchers
have identified that intellectual ability is an
important predictor of academic achievement, but
that other factors also have a significant impact on
this success. We aim, at Manly Selective Campus, to
not only challenge our students academically but to
provide an environment where students have the
opportunity to participate in a wide range of
curriculum enrichment activities to extend their
boundaries even further. We look forward to seeing
the results of this survey to determine if there are
any other factors that both the researchers and our
students identify as areas in which we as a school can
develop to provide an even better learning
environment for students.
UNITED NATIONS DELEGATE
It was with great pride that Year 11 student Imogen
D’Souza informed me that she has been selected as a
delegate to participate in the United Nations Youth
Australia Pacific Project 2013. Imogen is one of 10
delegates from across Australia who will travel to
East Timor in July. While in East Timor, Imogen will
gain experience in international issues facing the
Pacific region by meeting with the UN, the Australian
Ambassador and other government officials in Dili.
She will also work on local development projects,
teach English classes and establish relationships and
youth networks with
organisations from
across the Pacific
region. We
congratulate Imogen
on her selection and
look forward to
hearing of her
experiences upon her
return.
IMPROVEMENTS TO GROUNDS
Students will begin to see some significant
improvements to the grounds thanks to the
contributions of our P&C Association. Mr David Nord
has played a major role in the development of plans
and the sourcing of materials and equipment to
facilitate these improvements. In the very near
future, the aging basketball towers will be replaced
with new ones. Picnic style tables have already been
delivered to the school to be positioned in the main
quadrangle area, replacing the existing circular tables
and allowing for more students to sit together during
lunch and recess breaks. Landscaping of the grassed
area between the basketball courts and canteen will
enhance that space, as will the tidying up of the
garden near the TAS block steps. Finally, the path
down from the covered area to the gate on Harbord
Road will be edged to provide a barrier for the bark
chip and stop it from washing over the pathway
during rain. These improvements are very much
appreciated and without the support of the P&C
would certainly not have come to fruition in such a
speedy time frame.
ART59 NEXT WEEK
I have been fortunate to have had some sneak
previews of some of the artworks being delivered to
the school for sale at our P&C major fund raising
event for the year, ART59. These pieces will be on
display in the school hall from Wednesday of next
week with the event culminating with the Cocktail
Party and results of the silent auction of artworks on
Friday evening. I encourage all of our school
community to view the works on Wednesday or
Thursday and then purchase tickets for the Cocktail
Party on Friday. Of course, while viewing the works,
why not place a bid for that piece that really takes
your eye. In addition, helpers are still required to
assist with the setting up of the show and we would
certainly welcome further donations for prizes and
auctions to be held on the Friday evening. If you can
assist in any way, please contact the school and we
will pass on details of the organising team.
Congratulations to Tom Butler
Two weeks ago I mentioned how well Tom Butler,
Year 9, had done in the Australian Geographic
Competition and that he was in the running for
membership of the Australian team to the National
Geographic World Championship. After another one
hour exam and a phone quiz, I am happy to report
that Tom is part of a three member team which will
compete in the World Championships in St
Petersburg in Russia in late July. Congratulations
Tom.
R Dean
Tom had to answer the following questions as part of
the telephone quiz. How would you have gone?
1. Where is the Sulu Sea?
2. What is the loss of water soluble nutrients
from the soil due to rain called?
3. Where is the Three Gorges Dam?
4. Which South American country is currently
suffering from overfishing of its anchovy
stocks?
5. Name the volcano that erupted in in 1883,
generating a tsunami that killed 36000
people.
PROJECT PENGUIN 2013
Project Penguin involves NBSC students working with
Taronga Zoo and students from local primary schools
on a joint project to help conserve the Little Penguin
colonies of Sydney Harbour.
Thirty of our students set off for the zoo at 8 am on
Thursday 19 May, their first step towards becoming
Little Penguin advocates.
After a full day of learning about the Little Penguins
and their habitat (this included bush regeneration
and field activities as well as lectures and mentor
training) they had one more presentation from
experts and a simultaneous presentation from the
penguins themselves, inside the Manly Sealife
Sanctuary. At 4.30pm the eager but tired students
headed home with new knowledge and, unluckily,
the odd tick.
particular we are pleased to be able to complete a
number of outstanding projects in the grounds now
that we have done the rounds of design, specs and
quotes (thanks here to David Nord who has done all
the heavy lifting). Specifically:
• 8 new seats have been delivered to replace
those in the quad. These will be installed
over the coming weeks and the old ones
hopefully recycled where appropriate
elsewhere in the grounds.
• Repairs to the wall near the bus shelter as
well as an improved entrance near the bus
stop have now go the go ahead.
• The plan to upgrade the wall in front of the
canteen and add a seat on the top for
students will also be started as soon as
possible.
• The four old basketball towers will be
replaced with new ones to match the
remaining 2. This will be done with some
urgency as one of the older towers has
recently broken and become unusable.
• An improved edge using pine log posts,
sleepers and rock wall for the garden
between the TAS block and the basketball
court.
• Improvements to the driveway borders for
the entrance on Harbord Rd.
Most of these will be done by professional builders,
but some of the work will also be completed at the
next working bee. With a very full calendar this term,
we are looking at holding this early next term.
In addition:
• We have re-affiliated with the Northern
District Council of P&Cs which has recently
restructured to reflect the changes in the
Dept. of Education. If you would like to know
more about what the Council does the links
are on our website.
• We heard from the Canteen which continues
to provide a great service and will again be in
a position to contribute to P&C funds. They
are also looking to trial a new supply of
drinking water which will do away with the
sales of bottled water. This has been at the
request of the Student Environment
Committee who are keen to eliminate the
plastic bottle from the school.
• Maria Romeo provided an update on Art 59
and highlighted a number of areas where
help would be especially appreciated. Every
family would have received an email about
this on Thursday. In particular silent auction
items are still very much being sought and
assistance to help set up next Wednesday
would be greatly appreciated. Most
particularly, make sure you put the event on
the diary and bring your family and friends.
The cocktail evening and auction on Friday
24 th is a wonderful event; lots of fun, great
art work, Manly spirit and fundraising.
• Tony Rudd also demonstrated the new,
integrated school management system which
will clearly be a great productivity tool for
the staff and will ultimately provide an
excellent communication platform between
the school and the students and families.
A big thank you for all the hard work put in by so
many people to make all these things (and so much
more) happen around our school. See on Friday at
CHICAGO
Sunday Rehearsal Times
All cast: 9am – 4pm
Orchestra: 12 noon – 4pm
Everyone: Please note there will be an ALL DAY
dress rehearsal on Thursday
13 June, 9am-3.20pm.
Chicago is set in the 1920s; The jazz Age.
You might like to read this excerpt from an article
that was printed in the New Republic in September
1925. It was titled ‘Flapper Jane’, written by Bruce
Bliven. Apparently, parents’ puzzlement of their
teenagers’ dress and decorum is nothing new.
Jane's a flapper. That is a quaint, old-fashioned term.
This Jane, being 19, is a flapper, though she urgently
denies that she is a member of the younger
generation, which, she will tell you, is aged 15 to 17;
and she professes to be decidedly shocked at the
things they do and say. That is a fact which would
interest her minister, for he regards Jane as a
perfectly horrible example of wild youth--paint,
cigarettes, cocktails, petting parties--oooh!
Let’s look as she strolls across the lawn of her
parents' suburban home, having just put the car
away after driving sixty miles in two hours. She is, for
one thing, a very pretty girl. Beauty is the fashion in
1925. She is heavily made up, not to imitate nature,
but for an altogether artificial effect--pallor mortis,
poisonously scarlet lips, richly ringed eyes--the latter
looking not so much debauched (which is the
intention) as diabetic. Her walk duplicates the
swagger supposed by innocent America to go with
the female half of a Paris Apache dance. And there
are, finally, her clothes.
These were estimated the other day by some
statistician to weigh two pounds. Probably a libel; I
doubt they come within half a pound of such bulk.
Jane isn't wearing much, this summer. If you'd like to
know exactly, it is: one dress, one step-in, two
stockings, two shoes.
Her dress, as you can't possibly help knowing, is also
brief. It is cut low where it might be high, and vice
versa. The skirt comes just an inch below her knees.
The idea is that when she walks in a bit of a breeze,
you shall now and then observe the knee (which is
not rouged--that's just newspaper talk).
Jane's haircut is also abbreviated. She wears the very
newest thing in bobs, even closer than last year's
shingle. It leaves her just about no hair at all in the
back, and 20 percent more than that in the front--
about as much as is being worn this season by a
cellist (male); less than a pianist; and much, much
less than a violinist. Because of this new style, one
can confirm a rumor heard last year: Jane has ears.
The corset is as dead as the dodo, and the petticoat
is even more defunct. The brassiere has been
abandoned since 1924. While stockings are usually
worn, in hot weather Jane reserves the right to
discard them, just as all the chorus girls did in 1923.
"The Flapper," Life magazine cover, 1922
Where will it all end? Apologetically I reply that no
one can say. Nudity has been the custom of many
countries and over long periods of time. No one who
has read history can be very firm in saying that It
Never Can Happen Again. We may of course feebly
hope that our climate is not propitious.
The recent history of the Great Disrobing Movement
can be checked by looking at bathing costumes.
There are still a few beaches near New York City
which insist on more clothes than anyone can safely
swim in, and thereby help to drown several young
women each year. But in most places - universally in
the West--a girl is now compelled to wear no more
than is a man.
That fact is, as Jane says, that women to-day are
shaking off the shreds and patches of their age-old
servitude. "Feminism" has won a victory so nearly
complete that we have even forgotten the fierce
challenge which once inhered in the very word.
Women have highly resolved that they are just as
good as men, and intend to be treated so. They don't
mean to have any more unwanted children. They
don't intend to be debarred from any profession or
occupation which they choose to enter. They clearly
mean (even though not all of them yet realize it) that
in the great game of sexual selection they shall no
longer be forced to play the role, simulated or real,
of helpless quarry. If they want to wear their heads
shaven, as a symbol of defiance against the former
fate which for three millennia forced them to dress
their heavy locks according to male decrees, they will
have their way. If they should elect to go naked
nothing is more certain than that naked they will go,
while from the sidelines to which he has been
relegated mere man is vouchsafed permission only to
pipe a feeble Hurrah!
"Jane," say I, "I am a reporter representing American
inquisitiveness. Why do all of you dress the way you
do?"
"I don't know," says Jane. This reply means nothing:
it is just the device by which the younger generation
gains time to think. Almost at once she adds: "In a
way," says Jane, "it's just honesty. Women have
come down off the pedestal lately. They are tired of
this mysterious-feminine-charm stuff. Maybe it goes
with independence, earning your own living and
voting and all that. Women still want to be loved,
but they want it on a 50-50 basis, which includes
being admired for the qualities they really possess.
1920s ad for necklaces
Nowadays, lots of girls prefer to earn their own living
and omit the home-and-baby act. Well, anyhow,
postpone it years and years. They think a bachelor
girl can and should do everything a bachelor man
does."
Attempts to link the new freedom with prohibition,
with the automobile, the decline of Fundamentalism,
are certainly without foundation. These may be
accessory, and indeed almost certainly are, but only
after the fact.

NORTHERN BEACHES SECONDARY COLLEGE
BALGOWLAH BOYS • CROMER • FRESHWATER SENIOR • MACKELLAR GIRLS • MANLY SELECTIVE
Teaching and learning have again been high priorities for the
Term 1 cooperative college programs.
Last term saw exceptional learning from our Year 7 Gifted
and Talented students as they made group multimedia
presentations to conclude their week long project based learning
on stainability. At the same time, there has been outstanding
feedback regarding the leadership of technology based learning
provided by Year 9 and 10 mentors from various campuses
working with local primary schools on the Design Make Innovate
program.
The Australian Curriculum is high on the agenda for teachers of
Year 7-10 students. Consequently, during the latter part of Term
1, groups of head teacher were organised to coordinate faculty
based curriculum planning action groups. So, Term 2 began with
most of the core subject teachers meeting to collegially train
and development new curriculum responses for our students
in 2014. Some exciting and engaging innovations appear to be
possible and these will now be developed at each individual
campus.
Freshwater Senior Campus Music students performed at On
Show 2013.
Further to teaching and learning, planning is well underway for
the Term 3 College Development Day. In 2013, the theme for
the day will be Differentiated Learning and teachers will explore
effective and engaging ways to cater for the learning needs of all
students. All teachers stand to benefit as we come together to
share innovations and successes across NBSC.
Principals in the Northern Beaches also are embarking on some
learning. Recently the Northern Beaches Learning Alliance
(i.e. primary and secondary principals of all Northern Beaches
schools), successfully applied for a grant to further train
principals to assist future educational leaders in our schools.
Details of the program will be finalised soon, but it promises to
be an exciting opportunity for all of the schools involved.
Northern Beaches Secondary College continues to provide
students with broad learning experiences in a wide range of
activities
Year 7 students from Cromer, Balgowlah Boys and Mackellar Girls
came together for the final presentation held at Freshwater Senior
Campus for ‘Will the Bubble Burst?’
In March, for the first time ever, NBSC Balgowlah Boys Campus
hosted the annual OnShow showcase of performing arts talent
across NBSC. It was an incredibly encouraging to see around 250
dance, music and drama students from all of the campuses come
together for such a positive experience. The outstanding efforts
of the Show Director Hasan Shamal and Production Manager
Joshua Coombes, ably assisted by the campus coordinators and
teachers, created a new standard of production this year at the
Balgowlah venue.
In 2013 we have more students than ever involved in the NBSC
Duke of Edinburgh Awards Scheme. So Term 1 began with large
groups of new students signing up and beginning their qualifying
walks. Since then, students are busily taking on new skills and
training and recording their progress as part of the overall
program. Potentially this could be our largest group of gold
awardees to date!
Finally, our college winter sports program gets busy this term
with many NBSC teams competing in knockout competitions
and events. We are hopeful that some of the teams can make
a significant mark in their respective competitions, but the
opportunity to collectively compete as a college team continues
to bring great rewards for the students involved.
Project Penguin
Taronga Zoo and Northern Beaches Learning Alliance will again be
working together on Project Penguin. This year four Campuses,
Manly Selective, Balgowlah Boys, Mackellar Girls and Cromer,
will be working with local primary schools; Beacon Hill, Harbord,
Manly Village, Manly West and Curl Curl North.
Students will develop a display which will be launched at the Zoo
on Thursday 27th June. Their aim will be to provide resources
which will promote understanding of the plight of the Little
Penguin. The project incorporates a wide range of activities and
workshops for all the students and will encourage teamwork and
provide leadership experience for the College students.
This year the projects will also be displayed throughout the Manly
CBD in shops, cafes and businesses.
Manly Selective Campus students enjoying their expedition.
encouraged to finalise the details of their Award to receive
their certificate and badge. This may involve finishing hours,
asking assessors to sign off each component and letting your
coordinator (Mrs Yorston) know that you are ready to complete
your award.
The Silver pack and paddle practice expedition is set for
Friday 24th May – Sunday 26th May 2013 (with the qualifying
expedition being Friday 8th November – Sunday 10th November
2013).
Gold students are heading out on numerous expeditions
throughout the year with Somerset Outdoor Learning Centre
and Outdoor Education Group. A hike from Patonga to Somersby
(Great North Walk) was held in the holidays 22-25 April for 17
students from the College.
Mackellar Girls Campus students on their Habitat Day Mentor
Training.
Duke of Edinburgh
This year we have seen 150 students from all campuses
sign up for Bronze and complete their Preparation and Training
and Practice Adventurous Journey with Somerset Outdoor
Learning Centre. The students braved tough (hot!) conditions
to complete a 2 day hike and camp. The participants found
the journey challenging but fun, and it was great to see new
friendships forged across campuses. Congratulations to all
involved!
Your next Qualifying Adventurous Journey will be held in
Term 4:
Saturday 19th October – Sunday 20th October 2013
OR Saturday 26th October – Sunday 27th October 2013
OR year 9 Camp (Manly students only).
All Duke of Ed students are working hard across the year to
commit to regular activity (at least one hour a week) in three
components: Skill, Fitness and Volunteering. Students have
chosen a range of goals to achieve, including cooking for their
family each week, learning bike maintenance skills, volunteering
with Bush Care, caring for the elderly and the young, dancing,
yoga and karate. Such activities stretch students beyond their
comfort zone, demand organisational skills and dedication.
